Endangering Science Fiction Film explores the ways in which science fiction film is a dangerous and endangering genre. The collection argues that science fiction's cinematic power rests in its ability to imagine ‘Other’ worlds that challenge and disturb the lived conditions of the ‘real’ world, as it is presently known to us. From classic films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris to modern blockbusters including World War Z and Gravity, and directors from David Cronenberg to Alfonso Cuarón, contributors comment on the way science fiction film engages with dangerous encounters, liminal experiences, sublime aesthetics, and untethers space and time to question the very nature of human existence. With the analysis of a diverse range of films from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Endangering Science Fiction Film offers a uniquely interdisciplinary view of the evolving and dangerous sentiments and sensibility of this genre.

Review

"At a time when SF cinema has become ‘dangerous’ once more for its cultural relevance and its ontological, epistemological, and aesthetic exploration of grand ideas and problems, it has also become ‘endangered’―primarily by superheroes and the genre of fantasy. Redmond and Marvell's collection is thus a welcome reminder of the power of SF film to provoke us to thought and action in the real world in which we live. Bringing together strong essays from an international mix of media and cultural studies scholars who write on a variety of important topics and films, Endangering Science Fiction Film would also work well in the classroom." ―Vivian Sobchack, University of California, Los Angeles

"Between cognition and commodification, revolution and reaction, affect and effect, between the sublime and the ridiculous, SF is perilous and imperilling. It can dislocate any sense of space and time, unsettle any exceptionalism, destabilise any prejudice, or it can hew to privilege and reaffirm power. Either way, as this collection shows, SF is a threat." ―Mark Bould, University of the West of England

"Dangerously taboo, progressive, conservative; provocative; Endangering Science Fiction Film, an exciting collection of insightful and rigorously researched essays, shatters our comfortable preconceptions about SF film and the present and future worlds that they explore. A must-read for the SF student and scholar." ―Stacey Abbott, University of Roehampton

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fine collection of scholarly essays about a range of science fiction films By K. Bunker Behind the awkward wording of this book's title is an excellent volume of scholarly critiques and analyses of a host of science fiction films. Regarding that (in my opinion) ill-advised title, what it means is "Science Fiction Film Which is Endangering," with "Endangering" in turn being used to mean challenging, thought-provoking, and just plain interesting. In the two editors' various section-introductions through the book they keep awkwardly shoehorning the word "[en]danger[ing]" into their text, to the point that I wanted to quote The Princes Bride at them: "You keep using that word..."Moving on to the content of the book, it's a collection of articles by various authors, most of them professors of film studies or related fields. As with all such books, I found some of the articles more rewarding than others, but overall I was impressed with the quality of the volume. A few of the chapters were a bit too thick with scholarly jargon for my pedestrian education to keep up with, and there were others that tried to make points that I didn't find convincing or well-argued, or were on topics I didn't find interesting. But all of these flaws were the exception rather than the rule, to my eye.Among my favorites were Alan Woolfolk's chapter (whose intimidatingly jargonistic title I won't repeat). Among other interesting points, Woolfolk compares the initial efforts to aid the alien "prawns" depicted in District 9 with "the official humanitarian efforts that have become all too familiar in the contemporary world in which such efforts begin with good intentions and end with moral exhaustion and disgust." He goes on to draw some thought-provoking parallels between District 9 and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Hannah Arendt's classic study of Nazism, Eichmann in Jerusalem.Other excellent articles include Sherryl Vint's compare-and-contrast of the movies World War Z and Monsters, in which she discusses the sharply divergent political subtexts of the two films, and a piece by Scott Wilson that takes an incisive look at the recurring themes in David Cronenberg's films. There were many other fine articles out of the book's 19 chapters, covering a broad range of topics and quite a few (mostly recent) SF films.A point of interest one often finds in books like this one is that scholarly skills don't always coincide with nerd skills. Thus, for example, no less than two of this volume's articles manage to misquote Roy Batty's "Tears in rain" speech from Blade Runner. One simply flubs the wording, while another mistakenly uses a version of the monologue that appeared only in a leaked shooting script. This may seem like a mind-boggling goof to those of us who have a nerdily detailed knowledge of SF films, but really it isn't. Again, scholarly skills don't always coincide with nerd skills, and there's a difference between being able to extract interesting insights and depths of meaning from a film and being able to spot trivial errors in quoted passages. For my money, the former expertise is far more worthwhile. If you have an interest in science fiction film that goes beyond surface-level entertainment, and if you want to take a look at the sorts of thoughts and insights that have been gleaned from such films by some leading scholars, I think you'll find this book a deeply interesting, educational, and rewarding read.Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book in return for a review.

By Charles Loridans Created by Jim Beard, six rollicking and rocking yarns by himself and five other writers, Nathan Meyer, M. H. Norris, Rocko Jerome, Sam Gafford and Joseph Amere, each delivering a solid tale of the Lemon Herberts.A fictional band, created from Beard's imagination but with elements of real bands and musicians from that era, the writers seem to have had a blast with these stories, and that fun is infectious to the reader.I couldn't help but be reminded of Saturday morning cartoons like The Hardy Boys, Josie and the Pussy Cats, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids and the Chan Clan. Rock Stars who had adventures and solved mysteries. Some of the tales are light and fun, others are a little dark and somewhat trippy.I highly recommend this book! Hoping for a follow up!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Lemon Herberts By James Bojaciuk This book wasn't quite what I was expecting. For whatever reason, probably through the fault of my misfiring synapses, I expected something more in tune with The Monkees--insane, bonkers, living cartoons centered around madcap action-adventure plots. Most of the stories are much, much more realistic; even when they begin to narrow in on Monkees style madness (particularly in Jim Beard's story), there's still a gulf between my expectations and reality.I'm prefixing the review with this to warn anyone else who might've stumbled into the wrong idea of what this collection is about. Because as much as I expected The Monkees, this is its own creature. It's nostalgic for a time that never was, and pushes hard for the hopes and dreams of young people and youth culture (though as a youth myself...let's say that's not a theme I'm built to enjoy). It's its own, unique creation. It stands firmly on its own legs, triumphant in everything it wanted to accomplish. If it appeals to you, you're the person this collection was made for.THE STORIES:I'm going to be going very in-depth into what I feel works, and what I feel doesn't. It might be a bit much for someone trying to decide if they want to buy the book (you should), but I feel if an author doesn't learn something from the review, it's not a very good review.Jim Beard's "Call to Arms" (four stars)A solid start to the collection. Plenty of humor, plenty of action, and it has the best forward-drive of all the stories. Even if the editor *hadn't* written this story, it's the ideal thing to launch into on page one. This story comes nearest to The Monkees in tone. It's well written, and it's a great introduction to (most) of the characters. But as much as I dug the humor, I couldn't get into the Cold War spy-show satire. I think my problem, personally, was that the agencies' plans didn't make sense in the mostly-"realistic" world the rest of the stories built. I also couldn't dig into how Her Majesty was used, in the end, resolving the plot because she's sexy. It's a shame that most of this mini-review is griping; it's a fine story, but marred by the above. It's a great start for the collection.Nathan Meyer's "The Night Travelin' Hard Landing Blues" (three stars)This story dragged a bit. But once the two secret societies enter the picture things picked up. It ended up being a fun little peek into the secret history of Lemon Herberts universe. If there's a second volume, I'd love to see another author pick up on Key Masons. This story has some fun dialogue, and it's really Ally's time to shine.I wish this story had skipped the mystery, which dragged on a little, to jump right to the occult conspiracy. It feels like that was the reason this story exists, and it was a great deal of fun. In this story Her Majesty has a nickname, "Queenie." No-one mentions it in any of the other stories. I wish Beard had edited this out; it's a weird artifact of the creative process. I dislike that "Her Majesty is sexy" is used as a plot resolution for the second time in a row, this time distracting cultist guards instead of secret agents.M.H. Norris' "Puzzle Pieces." (four stars)Another strong contender. This is the story where the characters came alive, to me, and was by far the best story for Her Majesty and Hawks. They shine, and they shine bright, in a story that really enthrones the intelligence and detective skills of our leads.Tone problems continue, though. This story is completely realistic; providing someone is mad enough to give the villain's plan a shot, you could use it to sabotage any pop sensation's concert. I don't have any issues with this story, particularly, though I think Norris would've done well to focus less on the fans and more on the investigation.Rocko Jerome's "Dragon Lady Island." (two stars)I couldn't get into this one.Everyone feels out of character. On the plus side, it's absurdly cartoonish.Sam Gafford's "A Song of Spring" (four stars)I've followed Mr. Gafford's work on William Hope Hodgson for a few years now, so I was surprised to encounter him here. A solid, well-told story. The "secret origin" for Bollywood is cute. Some of the dialogue made me break down laughing.Hawks feels badly out of character, unfortunately. He's the kind of Englishman you expect from The Monkees, instead of the mysterious, noble man the rest of the stories built. But, then, I suspect Mr. Gafford was writing for something closer to my initial expectations. Then again, this story has more of the "Young people can save the world" philosophy than most of the other stories. It's hard to say. Her Majesty plays damsel in distress, but it feels earned. I wish her real name had been set up better, though, either in this story or somewhere else in the collection. I also wish the Bollywood connection had been built on, and "redeemed" by heroic characters. It's the one real false note that Bollywood is left as a villain's plan.Joseph Lamere's "Contact High" (four stars)A fascinating sort of post-mortem on the book, looking back on it as a series of conspiracy whispers. This is the most fascinating story in the book, and to say more would ruin it. It's equal parts ghost story, conspiracy thriller, sci-fi, and everything else that went into this book.I wish the author had included more objective description. Scenes had a tendency to float about, without being nailed in time and space. But, reading this story, I'm not sure that wasn't intentional and a carefully laid part of the story.CONCLUSIONThis is a good collection, and more than worth your time and money. Despite the tone crashing about all over the place, despite the wildly varying characterizations, and despite whatever other issues I might have had, this is a fun book. The love the authors had for it shines through, and that's rare enough.Pick it up, if you're into sem-serious musical adventures. You won't be disappointed.I'm wishing for a second volume (possibly an annual series). The authors all did a great job, and I'd love to see what they could do with a more consistent tone and background. Here's hoping.

I felt like a kid again, watching fun and clever cartoons and old mystery films in my basement on a Saturday morning. A delightful and well-written romp that I hope to see in many sequels in the future!

Fearful Odds is a no holds barred narrative told in three parts. It is the true story of a young Army officer, groomed for command and assigned to lead a platoon on a reconnaissance mission in the A Shau Valley, Vietnam in 1968. An otherwise routine mission is complicated by the contradiction of an inept chain of command. The resulting casualties devastate the platoon and the graphic images and memories of the action and the grueling months that follow, lead Chuck Newhall to a lifetime of severe trauma, guilt, grief and anger.

Returning home, Newhall embarks on an extraordinary entrepreneurial career bringing great wealth, prestige and security, despite severe episodes of depression and anxiety which would hobble others from achieving such levels of success. And yet a few years later, and seemingly without warning, the family that he had worked so hard to create and support is suddenly ripped apart by tragedy intensifying an emotional upheaval that revisits the pain and anguish he first felt during his time in Vietnam.

After decades of experience in managing the long-term effects of trauma and with the support of his family, Chuck Newhall has successfully come to terms with his past and the effects of PTSD. Fearful Odds offers hope, inspiration and valuable coping tools for anyone, or their families, who has been affected by post-traumatic stress, depression, mild traumatic brain disorder or the suicide of a loved one.

Fearful Odds is a story of perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds and will offer a guiding hand to others who are facing challenges on the battlefield, boardroom or back at home.

"Chuck Newhall's compelling narrative account of combat action in Vietnam takes you to one of the darkest hellholes on earth -- the A Shau Valley in 1968. Just when you thought that the war was over, Fearful Odds packs a punch in the gut you will be feeling for a long time." Joseph L. Galloway, author of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young

"If you care about America's warriors, and about how we as a society can help them come home after war, then you should read this book." Nathaniel Fick, author of One Bullet Away

"The illuminating depictions of sessions with your phychiatrist Dr. Kaiser can be regarded as almost a manual for understanding PTSD and learning how to overcome it. However, unlike the majority of books on the subject, you explain how PTSD can be addressed via depictions of how your own efforts have succeeded to varying extents. Readers will learn far more from your book, which is "real life," than from others." Solomon H. Snyder, M.D. Distinguished Service Professor of Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University

“Everyone knows someone who came back from Vietnam and never talks about it. In his brave and unflinching memoir, Chuck Newhall talks about it like no one else ever has. We see combat and its consequences, exploding years later like emotional time bombs when people are safely at home. This is a unique book, written in the ground-level tradition of Paul Casey and Timothy O'Brien but all its own about the war that never ends in real lives. This is the best book I have read about Vietnam as it was lived and as it still plays out in the lives of real people.”  Landon Y. (Lanny) Jones, former managing editor People and Money magazines and the author of William Clark and the Shaping of the West

"Grabs you with the opening words and never lets go. Powerful and compelling." Steve Huntley, former Editor and Columnist Chicago Sun Times

Fearful Odds: A Memoir of Vietnam and Its Aftermath, by Charles W. Newhall

Review "Chuck Newhall's Fearful Odds deserves to be read as a harrowing account of combat in Vietnam. But it demands to be read as a vivid, timeless portrayal of the trials of homecoming. If you care about America's warriors, and about how we as a society can help them come home after war, then you should read this book." Nathaniel Fick, author of One Bullet Away "There have been many books written on PTSD. They are largely "how to" manuals incorporating prescriptive "lessons" on what to do about one or another type of emotional stress. Too often, these volumes render problems in black-and-white with comparably simple-minded remedies. Your volume is far better than the great majority of PTSD books." -Solomon H. Snyder, M.D., Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Service Professor of Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University "Chuck Newhall's compelling narrative account of combat action in Vietnam takes you to one of the darkest hellholes on earth-the A Shau Valley in 1968. Just when you thought that the war was over, Fearful Odds packs a punch in the gut you will be feeling for a long time." -Joseph L. Galloway, author of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I Could Not Put It Down By Ellen This book would be a great present for a woman and a wonderful choice for a book club. Only relatively recently have women recognized that the trauma they have experienced from date rapes and domestic abuse is, in fact, PTSD, and that a real debt is owed to men like the author who are willing to speak freely about what they have endured. One of the protagonists is the author's grandmother, a woman steeped in military tradition by both heritage and marriage; another is the author's then wife, whose struggle with her own demons would lead her, as still a young mother, to take her own life. The book raises many thought-provoking issues; this reviewer was taken by the understandable, but almost unbearable, rage that erupts at the lethal carelessness of those for whom one is morally and professionally obligated to jeopardize one's life, even to the point of sacrifice. Many Vietnam vets have not had the successful post-Vietnam life that this author has had, and he readily acknowledges his good fortune at being able to afford extensive counseling. Another major element in his healing was his relationship with art and the cultural milieu that gave rise to each object he has collected. Another factor in his survival and post-Vietnam success as a venture capitalist he admits to owing to a perhaps inborn talent of looking ahead to the several directions in which a situation might lead - while always looking behind as well. Women of this reviewer's generation witnessed many friends preparing to join their boyfriends or husbands for R and R in Hong Kong or Hawaii. We shared in our friends' self-absorption as they mindlessly fretted over what to pack, utterly oblivious to the almost unendurable transition that would see these men, within just a few hours, transported from the Vietnam jungles to a luxury hotel - and then, even worse, back again. So vividly does the author recreate those moments that the reader feels lasting remorse that almost all of these Vietnam warriors were deprived of even a basic informed comprehension of what they faced. The reader takes away immense empathy for all sufferers of PTSD - and admiration for the courage it takes to admit, to address, and to communicate.

It is honest, graphic, and really opens readers up for discussion of the events in Vietnam. I've watched many Vietnam war documentaries, movies, have read other books and spoken to Vietnam war vets however this book is so unique from everything else in that it offers the realistic personal tale of Mr. Newhall. Here you get a glimpse into his deepest thoughts and he exposes many things that actually happened in Vietnam that is scarcely found in other texts possibly because it was far from pleasant. He is fearless and you feel like you get to know the person as if he were right there. It has the feel of a novel in that it is captivating and enchanting but it is also very informative, he goes through dates, lists, figures. There is also the underlying message of hope his story especially for many veterans or others suffering from PTSD. This is a book I recommend. It is an easy read, a lot to get through but never dragging.

Much much more than: A Memoir of Vietnam and Its Aftermath By DeeBujalski This book should be required reading for every Senator and Congressman.....before a War vote. And during and after a war vote. Mr. Newhall is an honorable man beyond all else. His willingness to share "it all" will be a blessing to many who can benefit from his real life Viet Nam horrors, PTSD, depression and all that follows. Thank you, Mr. Newhall, a gentleman and a scholar.

DS has a unique writing style that allows you to loose yourself in his words from the first paragraph.I was eager to find out what had happened to DL and some of the other characters. Why was he broken? What made him turn away from who he truly was?As the story progressed I loved the addition of his poetry, giving the reader a further insight into his mind and emotions.I am waiting for the release of part 2, and am looking forward to it. I still have questions unanswered and more questions that need answering. Reborn Part 1, has laid the foundations for a story that will be full of twists and adventure. I am interested in seeing how the relationship between DL and Elsa unfolds. No doubt, there will be things that will not be expected!!!Well done DS!!! A fantastic way to start the New DL Saga!!! xxx

Live Victoriously Over The Most Deadly Spiritual Threat Of This Hour  Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’   Matthew 7:21-23, NKJV   Could some Christian leaders who pastor large churches, heal the sick, prophesy, and preach the Gospel one day hear God speak directly to them: “Depart from me you who practice lawlessness”? Sadly, yes.   In How Can These Things Be, prophetic pioneer and apostolic leader Bill Hamon helps you live triumphantly in an age of compromise—as he exposes some of the most shocking and controversial issues in the church.   Become equipped to stand strong as you learn:

  • the “10 M’s” that help you tell the difference between true Gospel ministers and false teachers.
  • why sin is so deadly—and how professing Christians and leaders can live silently in sin’s bondage.
  • how people can operate in signs and wonders—while living secret lives, committing major sins like sexual immorality and fraud.
  • practical keys to living with Biblical integrity—escaping deception as they pursue the authentic power of God.
In these last days, the danger of deception is close to your front door—in pews, pulpits and pop culture.  Learn to identify false messages and messengers and escape their deadly threat!

Good Points Mixed With Weird Personal Opinions By AvidReader This book is an interesting scriptural study on how important it is for us to judge ourselves and understand that even the most popular, successful, and gifted Christian leaders can still go astray. If you've ever wondered how a Christian leader can preach the Bible on Sunday and spend the rest of the week in sin, then this book answers that question, by showing how no one really gets away with anything. Dr. Hamon includes some excellent advice on how to evaluate ministers-----not by their success or popularity but by their actions as Jesus taught us. The ten Ms of ministry is a really good checklist that we can all apply to our own lives as well.Dr. Hamon also includes some really good advice for pastor’s wives. Writing from experience in overseeing leaders, he points out that when a pastor falls into serious sin, the wife has a responsibility to confront him in love and set appropriate boundaries instead of hoping and praying that he will change like many pastor’s wives do. This advice is really needed. One of the best parts of the book is the prophecy by Stanley Frodsham warning us about the importance of discerning truth from error in the end times. He makes a lot of important points in this prophecy such as that false teachers will start out teaching truth before they mix in error so that people will accept what they say. "The deceivers speak first the truth and then error to cover their own sins which they love......therefore study the scriptures relating to seducing spirits for this is one of the greatest dangers for the Church in these last days. I desire you to be firmly established in My Word not in the personalities or the ministries of men."Now we all respect Dr. Hamon for teaching people how to activate their prophetic gifts but even good ministers like Dr. Hamon can add some personal opinions to their sermons that just don't make any sense. Since the Bible tells us to test all doctrine (1Thess 5:21) lets take a closer look at this.In this book Dr. Hamon writes:"The average tongues talking Christian uses less than 10% of the purposes and power of their spirit."That's really discouraging! Where did he get that statistic?Dr Hamon continues;"This is why I wrote the book: Seventy Reasons for Speaking In Tongues. I minister these truths to help Christians to increase their % of benefits from 10% to 30, 60, possibly 90% of God's purposes for gifting believers with their own spirit language."Uh, can we just pray in tongues without worrying about what our percentages are or trying to keep track of other people's percentages?Dr. Hamon continues with this theory:"satan's first step in developing the Judas spirit in people is to convince them that the leadership they have been serving and to whom they have been related and accountable is not living up to the promises they have made to them...the Judas spirit starts in seed form with the feeling that we must be rewarded immediately for every service rendered and given recognition or a higher position for time and money spent to participate in and propagate the ministry. The people who are disappointed in this way typically make a private and wrong interpretation and application of the leader's promises or prophetic statements which causes them to conclude that the leaders have not fulfilled their word......they leave the fellowship and refuse to allow their overseer to have input into their lives..."How do we know what was going through Judas' head? How does that prove a "Judas spirit?" This is Dr. Hamon's personal opinion---and it just seems to go way beyond what the Bible actually says. It also leaves no room for people to lovingly and gently confront their leaders when the leaders make mistakes----why didn’t Dr. Hamon include a chapter on that in this book? There's lots of theories about why Judas did what he did----that’s exactly what they are----theories and opinions, not scripture. Personally we think that Judas had seen Jesus perform so many miracles and escape from being arrested by the Pharisees so many times that he thought that Jesus could not be arrested. He was expecting a miracle. It must have really devastated him to see Jesus be arrested.Dr. Hamon also includes an example of a Christian falling into serious sin. In the list of sins that will send you to hell, he includes “criticizing the church.” Wait, if that’s a sin then what was Martin Luther doing during the Reformation? We have a real problem in the church today with Pastors who expect to give correction to their congregations without receiving any correction in return from the members who have proven their loyalty and faithfulness. The moment one person speaks up in love, suggesting that the pastor made a mistake, the rest of the congregation evaluates that one person without evaluating the pastor. And we wonder why people are leaving churches in droves. Dr. Hamon says that people leave churches for selfish reasons such as they feel they aren’t getting enough promotion in return for their service. That doctrine actually keeps the blame on the church members without holding the pastors accountable. It fails to acknowledge the legitimate concerns of loyal, hard-working church members, simply because they speak up. This theory of the “Judas spirit” puts all the blame and responsibility on the church members, making them feel like questioning the leadership is sinful.Dr Hamon continues:"The Apostle Paul declared there would come a falling away.....the dark ages fulfilled these scriptures in a general way...."Uh----where is the evidence that the Dark Ages was the fulfillment of "great falling away?""Nine major restoration movements over the next 500 years to restore back into the church all that the church had manifested in the book of Acts. In 2008, the Third and Final Church Reformation began and will continue until all prophetic Scriptures are fulfilled."Reading that made us curious enough to Google Dr. Hamon’s doctrine. He teaches that the church lost the office of the Apostles and Prophets during the Dark Ages but it was restored in a major move of God in the 1900’s and that it will continue to be restored from 2008 forward.Hang on a second. Throughout the last two thousand years of church history there are countless examples of people moving in the five fold gifts. Did God stop giving out those giftings during the Dark Ages? Of course not! While church doctrine had some major errors in that time, when has church doctrine ever been perfect? Look at history and you’ll see John Wycliffe (1380-1384) operating in the gifting of an Apostle. He translated the Bible into English and sent out a team of people to teach it to the peasants. Joan of Arc moved in a powerful prophetic anointing. St. Patrick was an evangelist. Madam Guyon was locked up in prison because her teaching ministry was having such a powerful impact. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. God has never stopped raising up people with the five fold anointing. Now we are just seeing greater numbers of people activated into their giftings. Now moving right along, here Dr Hamon makes a really good point and then adds something discouraging to it:"It's God's will that His people prosper and be in good health......but we can never assume that simply because we have cars and boats and houses and lands those things are a sign of God's approval on our lives."That's a really good point----so why does he add this?"We must realize that if we pray for wealth we are praying for temptations, snares, and heartaches. The higher we go up the mountain of financial success the less the vegetation grows the harder the wind blows and the lonelier it is. I've seen very few ministers who became wealthy and yet were still able to maintain integrity."Ok, let's examine this point----the first woman in American history to become a multi-millionaire was a single mother struggling to make a living washing clothes for people back just after the Civil War when washing machines didn't exist. This lady cried out to God for help, because it was such a hard life. God heard her prayer and gave her a prophetic dream on how to invent a hair care product. Through her simple faith in God, Madam CJ Walker would pioneer the cosmetic industry, create jobs for thousands of other people and inspire a whole new generation of female entrepreneurs.Yet even when she was able to buy a home in Rockefeller's neighborhood, she was just as strong of a Christian as when she had been struggling to make a living. How could it be wrong for her to simply want a better life for her and her daughter? Dr. Hamon is discouraging people's faith in God----which could leave them feeling hopeless in dead end jobs instead of realizing that God has something better for them.

Blake Bishop Bill Hamon helps the reader answer the question “How Can These Things Be? – A Preacher and a Miracle Worker but Denied Heaven” in his book by this same title. He begins by clarifying some important keys to understanding basic Christian theology: God’s purpose in creating man, the doctrine of sin, the prophecies of Jesus Christ, His plan for the Church, and the importance of the bodily resurrection. He goes on to expose some of the most controversial issues facing the church today by identifying true and false ministers, prophets, and ministries. He uses specific examples in light of Scriptural teaching to warn the reader of the danger of deception and helps them recognize strange doctrine and the spirit of error.Bishop Hamon’s work is well organized, solid in content, presented in a reader friendly format, and written in layman’s terms for easier understanding. I personally enjoyed his use of topical headings within the chapters, his frequent use of alliteration, and his use of lists, for example: “The Ten M s for Maturing and Maintaining ministry,” and “Eight Major Reasons God Created Man.”Bishop Hamon is an anointed Bible teacher, a natural communicator, and a gifted prophetic minister. “How Can These Things Be? A Preacher and a Miracle Worker but Denied Heaven” is a Clarian call to Christians today to avoid false teachers, deceptive doctrine, and to discern truth, a timely and important message.A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

I would've given it five stars if he had not misinterpreted "Preterism" and explain that there is the heresy of "full" Preterism ( that is only about 150 years old and denies the future resurrection) and then there is orthodox "partial" Preterism that embraces orthodoxy fully and has a rich tradition in the Protestant church today and historically. I was shocked that he would not make this distinction, very disappointed.

Review Praise for The British Lion: “Schumacher has done his historical research about Nazis, their sympathizers, and the Holocaust. He mixes those facts into a riveting story, creating an alternate history that will have readers trembling with the realistic possibilities. This is a must-read.” (Blackfive.net)“Within this foggy moral atmosphere . . . Schumacher creates a believable yet depressing occupied England, frozen and snow-covered. . . . Believable alternate history laced with multiple gunfights, turncoat duplicity, and an ending sure to propel the British Lion back into action.” (Kirkus Reviews)“The British Lion is . . . very good. . . . [It] definitely does both the thriller and alternate history genre proud. . . . Tony Schumacher is writing award-winning level fiction here and I would love to see him continue to do it for a long time.” (Amazingstoriesmag.com)

I didn't want to blink. Some authors excel at creating characters, others at plot. Tony Schumacher excels at both. Pinpointing what I loved most is impossible, because I loved every aspect, every little nuance, of this story.Let's start with the plot. This is historical fiction, based on an alternate version of WWII. Here, the Nazis have won the war and taken over Britain. The US is supporting Hitler. While this might sound crazy on the surface, Schumacher shows us just how easily this could have occurred. We see how one little turn of events creates a landslide in an entirely different direction. Schumacher clearly knows his history and he mixes those facts throughout, using the reality of WWII as a backdrop to his alternate world. The result is a plot so realistic that I found myself shuddering against the possibilities. While the plot kept me on edge and happily uncomfortable (an oxymoron, I know!), the characters held the power. They are real and flawed and oh so human. My emotions were all wrapped up in theirs. The intensity left me breathless. This book is the sequel to The Darkest Hour. While you could essentially read this one as a stand-alone, I highly recommend starting with the first book. The experience is unforgettable, and will leaving you asking, "What if?"*A massive thank you to the publisher for allowing me an early read!*

With the fall of Moscow and Britain, the US never entered the war and now does business with the victors. We get some possible politics of this situation, based on characters of the day.Rossett, the policeman who was severely injured while aiding the escape of a Jewish boy, returns; his SS boss Koehler decides to cover up the matter and allow Rossett to return to work as a London policeman. But the abduction of the SS man's wife and daughter brings the two to work together again, not much more trustful than they had been. American spies and the attempt to construct an atom bomb lead the tale to Cambridge, where Rossett has to choose whether to help a Jewish scientist, Ruth, who wants to take her secrets with her out of the country.More than anything this 1947 tale is wintry, a winter of the heart and spirit as much as bitter cold. I admire the work that has gone into creating the alternate timeline and events and characters consistent with the day. I did catch one phrase that seemed too modern - a man says he lives off the grid. I don't know how old the phrase is but I've never seen it in 1940s works. There's strong language, violence, deaths and a continuous undercurrent of menace. After all, the Nazis are in power, and they are using the excuse of a continued war with Russia to justify destroying populations. Too much violence for me but some readers won't mind and will rate it more highly. Read The British Lion for a dark, fast-paced thriller and take it as an allegory for modern conflicts.

By jackie This a terrific read and one that will keep you wanting to find out what happens next, at the end of every chapter! Just when you think you have established what path the characters will follow, there is a twist and often I gasped aloud to discover something different. The Britsh Lion will not disappoint any reader. Once you have this in your possession, you will not want to put it down. Forget any plans you have and immerse yourself in the world of The Britsh Lion.

Each of the seven stories in this anthology will capture your heart, and each is just the right length to read when time is precious. All the authors are seasoned writers and know how to tug on your emotions, make you laugh, and maybe make you shed a tear. The Longest Way Home by Lorrie Farrelly touched my heart. The hero, the heroine, and little Maddie all yearned for a home, and the telling of the tale is well done.Winner Takes All by Meg Mims made me laugh through much of the story. Meg has a comical way of telling a love story--I loved it. And was so pleased by the ending. For the Love of Grace by Julia Daniels was different in that one character is a sweet mentally handicapped sister. When you read this story, you'll fall in love with not only the heroine Poppy and the hero Reed Ridgeley, but you'll love Poppy's sister, as well.Brighter Tomorrows by Beverly Wells tells about two people with injured hearts--one filled with guilt and one filled with bitterness and shame. In this case, both the hero and the heroine fear opening up to love once again. A perfect romance.Second Chance at Love by Agnes Alexander is a warm-hearted story about a doctor, his nurse, and her young son. The hero is generous and fair, and the heroine benefits from his kindness. They not only work together, they soon find love, too.Never Had a Chance by Angela Raines. A wounded man, a soft-spoken woman, and a deadly trick. This story will keep you turning the pages.Forged by Fire by Linda Carroll-Bradd is memorable because of the hero. He will break your heart. But one sweet woman sees beyond his huge size and shyness and both find love in an unexpected way.NOTE: Added Bonus: This anthology contains recipes you do not want to miss!~~*~~Five StarsRising Star Reviews

The Longest Way Home was the first short story and I absolutely loved it. Ms. Farrelly does such a good job of writing about a little adopted girl whose father was believed killed in the Civil War and making me smile when everything was put to rights. That's an old phrase but it works for how this entire book made me feel. Each author did a great job in writing about the Fourth of July and celebrations in small farms, large ranches, little towns and community churches. I was not disappointed in any of the stories and enjoyed each one which brought smiles and enjoyment.

Although Cora's only twenty years old, she's worried about being a spinster. She doesn't possess the physical charms of the town beauty, and might not always turn out a perfect meal, but she yearns for love and marriage along with every other girl her age. She offers an apple pie for auction, hoping it will fetch the top price this year...and perhaps improve her chances with the local gents. Of course, the auction doesn't proceed as planned, but Mims finds a way of delivering sweet consolation to the heroine. As a bonus, Mims includes Cora's Mile High Apple Pie recipe in the back of the anthology! Well done.

There are many opinions and subsequent interpretations on the Book of Genesis. What did the author of Genesis intend and how can we possibly know, or is the important thing only what the Bible “means to you”? In this book, Dr. Jason Lisle answers questions such as: - What are the most common mistakes people make in trying to understand Genesis? - What are the necessary rules of biblical interpretation, and what is the proper role of science in understanding the Bible? - How does one identify the various types of biblical literature, and how do the rules of interpretation handle each type – poetic, prophetic, historical, etc.? Is there one correct interpretation of the Bible, or are there many? Discover why alternative positions are rationally impossible. Unlock a powerful understanding of God’s Word and equip yourself with a reasoned defense against those who distort the Word of God.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Thank you Dr. Lisle for another biblical and objective ... By Amazon Customer Thank you Dr. Lisle for another biblical and objective view of Scripture. I have just begun reading this book, but already I can say that it is a pleasure to see how you present the backdrop from which many individuals in today's culture determine truth: in a relativistic fashion.I have valued your understanding of philosophical concepts as well as your expertise in scientific matters for many years. I continue to rely upon your work to get the clear truthful message. When I finish the book I will write a more complete review. But I do want to thank you for your steadfast, biblical, and truthful stance. Praying more Christians and non-believers will read such works as yours.Thank you.Christian M. Shepard

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Must Have! By Chris C A book I will make much use of. This is a must have for all Christians. Dr. Lisle does an excellent job at explaining the correct way (as well as the incorrect way) to interpret scripture, and how we can know biblically. He goes over proper hermeneutical principles, faulty methods of hermeneutics, the different types of genres in the Bible and how we can identify them. The book is educational and very easy to understand. Dr. Lisle is a master at using analogies to help. I truly believe anyone who reads this book will benefit greatly from it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent book written by Dr. Jason Lisle!
