Bill Spradley is back with a second collection of quirky and captivating short stories. Like his previous collection, Interludes & Lunch, COLD TRAIL includes wry humor and touching sadness, wicked twists and unexpected tangents. In this second volume of short stories, the Nebraska native also touches the darker side with tales of life in the Sandhills and pioneers on the sod house frontier. “Spradley has an ear for dialogue and clever phrasing." -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Sixteen-year-old Joe Hawkins is the anti-hero’s anti-hero. His life is ruled by clothes, beer, football and above all violence – violence against hippies, authority, racial minorities and anyone else unfortunate enough to get in his way.

Joe is a London skinhead – a member of a uniquely British subculture which arose rapidly in the late 1960’s. While other skins were driven mainly by music, fashion and working-class pride, Joe and his mob use their formidable street style as a badge of aggressive rage, even while Joe dreams of making a better life for himself.

Lacerating in its depiction of violence and sex, often shocking by today’s standards, Skinhead is also a provocative cross-section of urban British society. It doesn’t spare the hypocrisy, corruption or excessive permissiveness which, the author believed, allowed the extremist wing of skinhead culture to flourish.

Skinhead, first published in 1970 and a huge cult bestseller, is now available for the first time in ebook form, with a new introduction by Andrew Stevens. Nearly fifty years on, it remains one of the most potent artefacts of British popular culture ever committed to print.

“I did happen to read the book when it came out and I was quite interested in the whole Richard Allen cult... suedeheads and skinheads and smoothies were very much part of daily life. There was a tremendous air of intensity... something interesting grabbed me about the whole thing.” Morrissey

“(Richard Allen’s) work shouldn't require a theoretical summing up, once enough of those to whom it appeals understand its attraction we will have superceded this society.” Stewart Home

Skinhead, by Richard Allen

About the Author

Richard Allen was the pen-name of James Moffat, born in Canada in 1922.

Moffat was prolific, though one repeated claim that he was the author of “at least 290 novels in several genres under at least 45 pseudonyms” still requires independent verification. It is known that Moffat contributed to an early draft of the novel Somewhere in The Night, which was later completed (or entirely rewritten – sources differ) by Michael Moorcock and published under the pseudonym Bill Barclay in 1966.

However it was Moffat’s gritty youthsploitation novels, published in the 1970’s and early 1980’s under the name Richard Allen, that form the bulk of his legacy today. The Joe Hawkins story began in Skinhead (1970) and was continued in Suedehead (1971). Later there were further instalments in Joe Hawkins’ story, as well as novels focussing on other youth movements such as Smoothies (1973), Punk Rock (1977) and the final Allen novel Mod Rule (1980). Altogether there were eighteen novels under the Richard Allen brand.

James Moffat spent most of his final decade in obscurity, though he lived to see the reissue of the Richard Allen novels in the early 1990’s. He died in July of 1993, while living in a nursing home in Newton Abbot.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hahahaha Joe Hawkins, what a plum! By Karl Wiggins I truly can’t work out whether this book is a cult classic or a comedy, and I’m going to have to place some spoilers in here to demonstrate, so there’s a warning for anybody who didn’t first read Richard Allen’s ‘Skinhead’ 40-odd years ago.So what have we got? Joe Hawkins, an East End skinhead whose life is ruled by violence, and we certainly read a lot about his reputation and anyone “unfortunate enough to get in his way.” In just the first few pages there’s the suggestion that Roy Hawkins, Joe’s father, gets Joe to sort out a docklands trade union leader who’s got it in for Roy. “I wouldn’t annoy Roy unless you want to meet up with his son, Joe ….. I wouldn’t annoy Joe Hawkins. Not ever!”Ed Black has apparently taken care of himself in some weird corners of the globe and he hardly goes anywhere without four of his special cronies who act as bodyguards and who he can count on to protect him, yet “the mention of Joe Hawkins sends a shiver of fear down his spine.”Gosh! Well Joe Hawkins must certainly be a hard-nut if just the mention of his name can strike fear into such a man. I found myself in a cold sweat over the idea of just turning the page, but felt obligated to brave it, praying that simply reading the book wouldn’t agitate this fictional character. Can East End skinhead, Joe Hawkins, really be this tough?Er, well, not really, I’m afraid. We meet Joe on Saturday and follow him to the pub where admittedly he makes two huge black men back down because they’d heard about his reputation. What reputation? Unless I’m missing some kind of hidden message here, it seems to me that he’s got a reputation for getting a spanking in just about every scrap he gets into.First of all him and his mates pick on a guy on the District Line. This fellow’s outnumbered and they’re tooled up but he fights back, withstanding everything they’ve got and still fighting back. All in all it’s a bit of an embarrassment for Joe.West Ham are playing away at Stamford Bridge, and Joe and his mates - believing in their own ‘reputation’ it seems - get into the Shed End and kick off. Now it’s their turn to be outnumbered, but I’m sorry to say they don’t give such a good account of themselves as the guy on the train. Joe gets stabbed and a jagged broken bottle is pushed into his face with savage force. Now say what you like, but that would be enough for me. I’d be off home to nurse my wounds. But Joe’s not finished getting beaten up yet. Back to the pub to find it full of dockers and other assorted heavies, men who weren’t going to back down to anyone “not even with Joe Hawkins’ reputation.” And they certainly don’t. Joe and his mates kick off and – yes, you guessed it - get punched all around the pub, kicked all over the floor and he ends up with three darts in his backside.I shouldn’t think that the docklands trade union leader’s got much to worry about, would you? So far, on the first day we meet him Joe’s been punched, stabbed, bottled, kicked all round a pub and ended up with three darts sticking out of his backside! Not a great day for anyone of his ‘reputation.’Sunday is the day of rest, so Joe and his mates take a vacation from being beaten up in order to head down to Brighton and bash up some Hippies and rape their girlfriend. They only ever seem to win against soft targets, you see, those who won’t fight back. It’s just that not being born too bright and completely lacking in those special survival skills common to most kids brought up on the streets, they seem to always take the ill-advised option of picking on the wrong people.A case in hand would be the church youth club they attack on Monday night. Joe managed to not get beaten up at all on Sunday, and also for most of Monday, so the church youth club provides a target for him to re-establish his much-valued reputation. Him and his mates stroll in the door, pushing people about, grabbing hold of girls and getting into a fight with one lad who doesn’t like bullies and decides to stand up for himself. He absolutely thrashes Joe, landing several punches to the face – which must surely have opened fresh wounds from Saturday’s bottling – and only stopping when a police offer saves Joe any further distress. So in the last 48 hours Joe Hawkins – he of the fearsome reputation – has been stabbed, bottled, kicked all round a pub by Dockers, had three darts stuck in his bum and he’s now been knocked about by choirboy.HahahahahahaThe copper, no doubt fearing he’s the only person in the whole of East London who hasn’t taken a pop at Joe in the last two days, chops him in the throat for good measure. Joe finishes the night he’d hoped to re-establish his reputation as the most fearsome street fighter in East London by puking his guts up on the pavement outside a church. You’d think that would be enough for Joe, wouldn’t you? I mean, he can’t even beat up a choirboy!Have you ever met one of those people, always bigging themselves up, who get into a fight every Saturday night, but who never win? They get a spanking from a different person every Saturday night! Well that’s Joe Hawkins, and by this time I couldn’t wait to read on. Who was going to knock him about next? Was he going to target a lunch club for Age UK, and were a couple of old ladies going to hammer him over the tea and biscuits?Well Joe’s a coalman and he’s always threatening the pensioners he delivers to after he’s altered the bill in his favour. Somehow news of this never gets back to the coal board, but that’s just one of several inconsistencies in the story. Anyway, much as I’d like to report that a pensioner kicks him all around his front yard, it’s an old couple’s son who Joe comes up against, on leave from the Army. He’s trained in unarmed combat and when Joe aims a kick at him he finds himself on his back in a pile of coal after receiving a punch to the jaw, a chop to the throat – possibly in exactly the same place as the copper chopped him the night before – and a kick in the balls.I’d give it up, Joe, if I were you. Let’s face it; it’s just not your week mate, is it?But this soldier’s made Joe feel inferior. Personally I’d have thought that taking a battering from a lad in a church youth club would have made him feel inferior, but then what do I know?East London is famous for producing hardened street fighting men, but when all’s said and done Joe Hawkins isn’t one of them. He does get revenge on the soldier, but he does it in the dark, without warning and with a gang of about 15 skinheads all armed with bottles, iron bars and an assortment of other weapons. So although Joe is reputed to have a ‘fearsome reputation’ we’re hardly likely to see him standing toe-to-toe ‘on the cobbles’ taking on Gypsy bare-knuckle fighters in a fair scrap, which traditionally is how East London brawlers earned their reputation. There’s trouble in a youth club in Ilford, a lad gets shot, and Joe’s involved. When the police come around to talk to him Roy Hawkins is so fed up with his antics that he takes his son upstairs and punches him all around his bedroom. OUCH! Joe’s face, after his disaster of a week must be absolutely black and blue from being punched all over a pub by dockers, punched all around a youth club by a choirboy and being bottled in the face by Chelsea supporters. Not to mention a few cracked ribs at least. As his dad lays into him, no doubt opening fresh wounds, bruising his already-bruised face even darker shades of black, blue and purple, he must have found himself thinking, “Wasn’t there somewhere else I should have been this week?”There are a plethora of inconsistencies in the book. We’re told that his idea of a slap-up meal consists of chips with everything, and a couple of pages later he orders steak with boiled potatoes. He comes up against a Hell’s Angel in a leather jacket. Since when did Hell’s Angels wear leather? I thought it was part of their ethos never to wear leather. He goes to a pop concert. A skinhead going to listen to bubblegum pop! Skinheads listened to early reggae, blue beat, rock-steady and ska, not pop. And finally on the way to the concert he feels safe from the law because “his was a face that did not conflict with those around him.”WHAT!After all the hammerings he’s taken that week (from dockers, choirboys, his dad and Chelsea supporters) he must looked like he’s just done 12 rounds with Mike Tyson, been run over by a concrete wagon and had a bear chew on his head for a while. Hardly a face to blend in!All in all, this book is a load of tosh and not the paperback-nasty I remember from my youth. I can’t realistically offer it any more than two stars.Mind you, I’m still a little nervous of Joe Hawkins. Supposing I got into a fight with him on a Saturday night and by some miraculous feat he beat me!!! Can you imagine how embarrassing that would be? I’d never live it down!

A Glove of Their Own (Morgan James Kids), by Deborah Moldovan, Keri Conkling, Lisa Funari-Willever

About the Author Debbie and Keri met as parents volunteering in their children’s kindergarten classroom in Basking Ridge, NJ. Together they discovered their mutual love of writing and teaching children. They coached local kids in community programs and later expanded on their love of baseball by volunteering for a charity called Pitch in for Baseball. This love to help others was inspired by Moldovan’s son Tyler. In lieu of gifts for his ninth birthday, he asked friends to bring used or new baseball equipment. Those items were donated to Pitch in for Baseball. Tyler has an ongoing collection drive and has donated thousands of pieces of equipment to this charity over the past nine years. This was the inspiration for the story and both Moldovan and Conkling support this wonderful organization.

Best PDF Ebook The Young Outlaw; or, Adrift in the Streets, by Jr., Horatio Alger

"The Young Outlaw" is the sixth volume of the Tattered Tom Series, and the twelfth of the stories which are wholly or mainly devoted to street-life in New York. The story carries its moral with it, and the writer has little fear that the Young Outlaw will be selected as a model by the boys who may read his adventures, and be amused by the scrapes into which he manages to fall. In previous volumes he has endeavored to show that even a street-boy, by enterprise, industry and integrity, may hope to become a useful and respected citizen. In the present narration he aims to exhibit the opposite side of the picture, and point out the natural consequences of the lack of these qualities. This may be a proper occasion to express gratitude for the very remarkable favor with which these stories of humble life have been received throughout the country. The writer is glad to believe that they have done something to draw attention to a neglected class of children, whom it is important to elevate and redeem. NEW YORK, March 25, 1875.

John Philips introduces the Marquis de Sade's highly original and thoroughly subversive depiction of human sexuality and the philosophical and political thinking that underpins it. He shows how, though Sade's work continues to shock, it can also be seen as the logical conclusion of eighteenth-century materialism. As the only writer of his time who dared to put the body at the centre of philosophy, Sade has a unique place in the history of modern thought. Extracts are taken form the whole range of Sade's writings, including The 120 Days of Sodom, Philosophy in the Boudoir, Juliette and his Last Will and Testament.

4 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Why read Sade? By T. E. Ditzler This is a very short book in a series of short books which attempts to assist in dissimilating textual patterns of the subjective authors. In the case of Sade, there are many assumptions which the audience tends to bring to the reading. The importance of Sade lies in how the text is referenced. Sade has been revisited several times in the last century and interest is currently still flaring. Why? This is yet another attempt to explain the phenomenon of validating Sade. Several good points--its hard to stay aloof when reading Sade. Do try to balance this material with a few other essays on the subject before "diving" into Sade, however. This book is the beginnings of a compass--but it will not bring you back!

They say that one good turn deserves another, but what about the opposite kind? From the author of psychological thrillers The Artist and Sleep No More, One Good Turn is an electrifying collection of three separate but interlinked short stories, all set in London on the same fateful night. You’ve Got a Friend Mark is on nightshift duty on the You’ve Got a Friend Helpline. Unfortunately for the callers, his idea of help is very different to theirs. One Good Turn Two young tourists in London find themselves on the last train out of the city, and begin to wonder if they’ll ever get to their hotel… Fare Game An illegal cab driver picks up an old, confused man and offers him a lift home. It’ll be a journey they both may regret. “In any given city, lives will intersect. In both good ways and bad.” ---------- (Very) Quick Author Q and A What inspired you to write this story? I’ve always loved reading psychological thriller novels, as well as behavioural science and criminal psychology books.(You might be able to guess that I’ve always had an interest in the darker side of human nature...)After writing my second novel I had loads of ideas that weren’t quite right for full-length novels, but which I thought would work well together as a short story mystery collection. I decided it would be interesting to write three linked short stories all set in the city of London and featuring people with malicious intentions. Who will enjoy this book? Anybody that likes forensic psychology fiction, suspenseful books, and sinister tales. Oh, and anybody with psychotic tendencies who has ever worked on a helpline…

Thank you, Mr. Marcos, for sharing your work with me!This is an excellent collection of short stories. I was lucky enough to read them on a gloomy day with roiling black clouds and occasional flashes of lightning accompanied by rumbling thunder and was pleasantly scared silly. Thank you, Angelo Marcos, for sharing your great imagination with us. I would recommend this work to everyone.

Michael Davies shows how Fr. Annibale Bugnini--before his dismissal by Pope Paul VI under suspicion of being a Freemason--was able to "reform" the Catholic Mass into the constantly evolving liturgy. Quoting Bishops and Cardinals as well as liberal "experts" and Protestant observers, he exposes the "time bombs" which were built into the Second Vatican Council's document on the liturgy by a few revolutionaries in order to be exploited later--and which have been detonating ever since. "I am convinced that the crisis in the Church that we are experiencing is to a large extent due to the disintegration of the liturgy."--Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), 1998.

66 of 69 people found the following review helpful. Davies pulls no punches By Alcuin Reid The liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council is very much a live issue. Michael Davies, for whom this issue was a cause, is a straight-shooter. His numerous works on the liturgical reform that followed it are relentless in their exposition of the nature and causes dissolution that the Roman rite experienced since 1964.This book is timely for the "question" of the Liturgy is very much under consideration at the present. The fundamental message of the book is contained in its title: the Conciliar Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy contained elements that would later explode and wreak havoc; or, in the words of Aidan Nichols, it "carried within it, encased in the innocuous language of pastoral welfare, some seeds of its own destruction."In demonstrating how such a grave state of affairs could come to be, Davies looks briefly at the twentieth century Liturgical Movement. Rightly, Davies states that the it sought "liturgical renewal within the Roman rite, but a renewal within the correct sense of the term, using the existing Liturgy to its fullest potential." And Davies correctly asserts that the ground for erroneous liturgical reform was laid by the didacticism of some later Movement enthusiasts, and by the consequent reformism which they espoused, which had far too much in common with the Enlightenment liturgical reforms condemned by Pius VI in 1794 and deprecated by Pius XII in 1947 in Mediator Dei.Archbishop Bugnini looms large early in the ascendancy of the reformists. Davies clashed personally with Bugnini over the question of the prelate's alleged masonic affiliation, and here Davies' presents clear arguments in support of his claim. I have to confess to always having wondered whether the question of who was or was not a mason amongst the curia is not a distraction from the critical assessment of the liturgical reforms? Surely the reforms themselves are what must be judged, not the moral probity of their advocates? But Davies is right to point the finger at Bugnini, for he pushed for ritual reforms that served his view that a didactic and radically simplified Liturgy was what modern man required well before the Second Vatican Council. And, given Bugnini's appointment as Secretary to the Council's Preparatory Commission, there is no doubt that he was ideally placed to see to the preference of his ideas. However, as Davies makes clear, Bugnini was not named Secretary of the Liturgical Commission during the Council itself, and was sacked from his Roman teaching post at the same time. Under the new Pope Paul VI, however, he was named Secretary of the post-conciliar Consilium and resumed his `interrupted' work.It is important to note that the Fathers of the Council did not draft the schema on the Sacred Liturgy which they were called upon to debate; this was done under Bugnini's co-ordination, who for more than a decade prior to the Council had been pushing for a reform along the lines of questionable principles. Thus, Davies asserts, some proposals, moderate enough when read with a traditional mindset, were inserted which were later to prove capable of exploitation in a most radical manner. It is also important to note that hardly any of the Council Fathers, for whom radical liturgical reform cannot be said to have been a burning issue, could have been expected to foresee such consequences. For the "time bombs" which Davies identifies were considered by the more than 2,000 bishops as merely proposals for a moderate reform--indeed an organic development--of the traditional Liturgy. Paragraph 23 itself honours this principle and declares that "there must be no innovations unless the good of the Church genuinely and certainly requires them." And the call for active participation was merely repeating that of Pius X made in 1903. Archbishop Lefebvre, who would later write "let us then admit without hesitation that some liturgical reforms were necessary," himself signed Sacrosanctum Concilium. The Fathers of the Council did not suspect the presence of such time bombs. One question Davies does not discuss merits some examination: were these time bombs maliciously planted with a view to the destruction of the Liturgy, or were they proposals for moderate reforms which were later exploited well beyond the bounds of their original intent and meaning? There is not enough hard evidence to gain a conviction on a conspiracy charge, however much suspicion abounds. On the available evidence, it seems that we can only say that the death of some key personages, the election of a new Pope and his rehabilitation of Bugnini--with whom Paul VI maintained extraordinarily frequent contact--and the spirit of the age, all combined to give to Bugnini and his allies the opportunity to explode the time bombs even if they had not originally been placed in the schema with conspiratorial intent. And explode them he did, rapidly. To take but one by way of example, Sacrosanctum Concilium's permission for the introduction of some vernacular into the Liturgy was, within six months, being interpreted as a licence for the progressive application of the vernacular into the Liturgy. Of course, we know that this is precisely what has happened. In the words of Bugnini; "It cannot be denied that the principle, approved by the Council, of using the vernaculars was given a broad interpretation." And the same may be said about the other principles or permissions for moderate reform.Davies catalogues various aspects of the consequent downward spiral of the Roman rite, not hesitating to attribute to it the pastoral disaster and massive loss of faith that first world countries have experienced since the Council. There is much by way of qualification and discussion one may wish to introduce into such an assessment, but again, this is a brief book, and one cannot escape the fact that the Liturgy and attitudes to it are utterly central to the practice of the Faith. Tampering with it is risky. To revolutionise it is to court disaster. In an appendix "The Fruits of the Liturgical Reforms," Davies cites some pretty hard and up-to-date statistical evidence--if evidence be needed--that we are suffering from such a disaster. Those who speak of the unfettered "renewal" supposedly experienced since the Council must face these facts. They also need to appreciate the causal link between the state of the Church today and the liturgical reforms enacted in the name of the Council. Other appendices provide some significant material demonstrating the protestant influence in the preparation of the new liturgical rites, and evidence that no formal permission is necessary for the celebration of the traditional rites.Davies' claims are as striking as they are serious. He pulls no punches, and for that we may be thankful, for the crisis in the Church does not permit of ostrich-like obfuscation. Whilst there is much more study and discussion to be done, there is perhaps an even greater need for concerted and immediate action to stop the haemorrhaging of the very fountain of life-blood of the Church that is her Sacred Liturgy. For stating this clearly and succinctly we remain grateful to the late Michael Davies.

Michael Davies was a terrific writer and a careful one. He has credible sources and is very calm in his approach to the book.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Sad but True By ROBERT Mr. Davies tells the tale of the dismantling of the Traditional Latin Mass with clarity and vigor. He cites his sources and gives ample evidence of his opinions. Interestingly, another reviewer who panned Mr. Davies' book cited Father Reid as a more reliable source, the same Father Reid who endorses Mr. Davies! Let me add my own meager endorsement to Father Reid's whose scholarship includes not only the books noted by the reviewer below, but also the excellent updating of Fortescue and O'Connell's, Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described.

“One of the world’s great explainers of the financial crisis and its aftermath.”―Michael Lewis

To those who don’t speak it, the language of money can seem impenetrable and its ideas too complex to grasp. In How to Speak Money, John Lanchester―author of the New York Times best-selling book on the financial crisis, I.O.U.―bridges the gap between the money people and the rest of us.

With characteristic wit and candor, Lanchester reveals how the world of finance really works: from the terms and conditions of your personal checking account to the evasions of bankers appearing in front of Congress. As Lanchester writes, we need to understand what the money people are talking about so that those who speak the language don’t just write the rules for themselves.

Lanchester explains more than 300 words and phrases from “AAA rating” and “amortization” to “yield curve” and “zombie bank.” He covers things we say or hear every day―such as GDP, the IMF, credit, debt, equity, and inflation―and explains how hedge funds work, what the World Bank does, and why the language of money has gotten so complicated. Along the way he draws on everything from John Maynard Keynes to the Wu-Tang Clan, Friedrich Hayek to Thomas Piketty, The Wealth of Nations to Game of Thrones.

A primer, a polemic, and a reference book, How to Speak Money makes economics understandable to anyone. After all, “money,” as Lanchester writes, “is a lot like babies, and once you know the language, the rule is the same as that put forward by Dr. Spock: ‘Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.’”

[with] a touch of Ambrose Bierce’s Devil’s Dictionary about it.” (Jim Higgins - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)“An idiosyncratic collection of short, sharp essays translating the jargon of finance with admirable concision and wit.” (Peter Sokolowski - New York Times Book Review)“Insightful and often funny… An invaluable primer.” (Ian Critchley - Sunday Times)“A hugely enjoyable book… Lanchester is a kind of brainy Everyman, a brilliant communicator.” (Melanie Reid - The Times)“An entertaining and informative read… Witty, provocative and engaging.” (Evening Standard)“How to Speak Money is a wonderful and enlightening book. Refreshingly clear, sharp, and funny, it’ll help you understand not only what the language of finance means but also why it matters.” (James Surowiecki, best-selling author of The Wisdom of Crowds)“Reading this book is like meeting an easy-going guy at a cocktail party who can explain everything that’s always mystified you about high finance―‘inverted yield curve,’ anyone?―with sparkle, wit, and crystal clarity. Demystification of finance By Contrarian Great book that explains banking and finance in understandable terms. If you want an idea of what this book is about, you can search for the author's recent New Yorker article "The Danger of Financial Jargon"The book has clear explanations and examples of how jargon can be used to confuse and intimidate people -- both individuals engaging in financial transactions and regulators trying to oversee the banks. The book is well-written, intelligent and entertaining. The core of the both is a lexicon explaining clearly the meaning of terms such as "Securitization", "QE2", "CDO" or "Credit Default Swaps" that you may have heard in the financial press but never understood. Until 2008, you could make a case that you could just ignore all of this. But since millions of people have been thrown out of their jobs or lost their homes as a result of the financial crisis -- not to mention the enormous amount the government lent to bail out the banks -- all of us should have some understanding of finance that has become so important to the way the economy works. This is a good place to start.Another benefit of reading this is that you may feel less intimidated by the small print in a mortgage or credit card agreement.

Hopkins I expected to skim John Lanchester’s book titled, How to Speak Money: What the Money People Say--And What It Really Means. I’ve been involved in finance for four decades and know the terminology that Lanchester explains in clear prose in this finely written book. Instead of skimming, I read the book from cover to cover, including the complete lexicon that comprises two-thirds of the text. Thanks to Lanchester’s fine writing, I was delighted by his lighthearted and accurate presentation of the terms used by those in finance. I was amused by how many terms he defines as “another way of saying ‘sacking people’.” When I came to “onions,” I laughed out loud. Lanchester wrote this book to provide tools to non-finance people to understand the arcane terms used with ease by those in finance. Non-finance readers should love this book, and insiders may also find a lot both to learn and to enjoy from this finely written book.Rating: Four-star (I like it)

Great book for people who act like they already know it all By WDE I bought this book for my college-age son who plans to major in business or economics at UC Berkeley. I had heard John Lanchester interviewed by Michael Lewis ("Moneyball") and a strong point that Mr. Lanchester made in that interview was that he wrote this book for the many people who don't understand money terms and sometimes pretend like they do. When I gave it to my son he thanked me profusely and started reading it right away. He thinks it's very useful for him right now and will continue to help him in his future career.

By Elizabeth Shaw "Being deeply loved by someone makes you strong, and in turn, loving someone gives you courage."So I will be the first to admit that I am not a big fan of the serial short story books, but the synopsis of this story caught my attention. Let me first start off by saying that I loved that Ivy was not what you typically think of when you think of an escort. Let’s all admit it, when we hear escort, we think sex is involved. However, right off the bat we find out that Ivy is a companion and no sex is involved which why I was intrigued by this book and wanted to know if Jax was going to be the guy that makes her break the rule. What I also enjoyed about this book was that Jax and Ivy has a previous connection so there isn’t the long build up in the story and Ms. Devereux does a great job flashing back to their childhood to give us history to their relationship.Where the story fell flat for me was the sex scenes. They were lackluster and some of the phrases and statements were cliché to me and had me cringing at times. I wished the scenes were as beautifully written as the rest of the story. My only hope is that they get better throughout the series. This story does end on a cliffhanger, and while the sex was lackluster for me, I am intrigued enough that I will probably read the next book in the series.

I loved the name and hoped that I would enjoy the book as well, and I did!In this first installment we meet, Ivy(Ivory) and Jax(Jaxon). By the way I love the name Jaxon and as I digress... They both knew each other from their past and met up again far in the future.I liked the flash backs, they were cute and helped build a better understanding to how Jax and Ivory's friendship worked. Jax was a sweet friend to her back then with her family drama and now, he seems just as sweet. Nothing seems to have changed to how he views Ivy, years later.I liked Ivy and Jax, they seemed cute together. You could tell that Jax would want more from Ivy from their past, that the author slowly reveals to us and I can't help but to root for them. Ivy has her baggage and I understand from what she went through, to just 'let go', that would be tough. But then again, from the little flash backs of them as kids, I feel like Jax will do good by her.The author did a good job at writing this novella. I got instant connections with the characters and fell in love with Jaxon. I can't wait to read the 2nd installment.* I received this book in an exchange for an honest review

The Wealthy Health Copywriter: How to Earn $13,000 For Every Sales Letter You Write, by Nick Daniel

Review "I was very impressed when Nick beat a long-running control of ours. He's great to work with and comes up with some excellent copy..."- Jesse Cannone, co-founder, Healthy Back Institute

About the Author Nick is a full-time author, copywriter, journalist and publisher. He was born in Canada, educated in the U.K., and worked in 15 different countries before settling (at least for a while) in California.Nick has had the travel-bug since he was nine, when a teacher told him stories about his 2,000-mile trek across Europe.Since then, Nick has walked across Peru (north to south), traveled by bus across China, climbed in the Himalayas, and ridden a motorbike half way across Vietnam. But by 2010 he was ready for a complete lifestyle change. He wanted to work from home, keep his own hours and dictate how much he earned. So he moved to California and started a direct mail copywriting business.Today he's writing direct mail sales copy for some of the biggest health clients in the world, including Agora Publishing, Dr. Sears (Primal Force) and the Healthy Back Institute. Clients like these are giving him repeat business for one reason - because his copy is beating their controls, and selling more product. Here's what Jesse Cannone, co-founder of the Healthy Back Institute, had to say:"Finding strong copywriters is a huge challenge...and often even the seasoned pros can't beat your control. So I was VERY impressed when Nick beat a long-running control of ours. He's great to work with and comes up with some excellent copy. I highly recommend him." Nick lives in Oakland, CA, with his wife Cecilia and their two dogs - Kafka and Borges. Nick's other passions are for off-road biking, hiking and running. When he's not outdoors (or 'working') he's probably reading a book, sitting on the balcony in the California sunshine. His favorite authors are Murakami, Sabato and Julio Cortazar.

By L Fleetwood The chapter titles alone piqued my interest as soon I opened Nick Daniel's book, The Wealthy Health Copywriter. For me, as a fiction and memoir writer and for any writer - 'Getting Ahead of the Competition' and '27 Secrets to Writing Stunning Headlines' are only Chapter 1 & 2, and there are many more informative details to help copywriters and any writer make their copywriting, writing or headlines stand out. It is a great book for health copywriters who wish to triple their income and has a step-by-step process for them to follow and implement in what is a huge industry - health copywriting - as well as a free Action Plan for all purchasers. So, whether you're writing copy, a novel or a blog don't we all want hints and tips for extraordinary headlines using words that as Nick puts it, 'grip, persuade and entertain you reader from start to finish'. A book for the health copywriter who wants to nail their sales letter and get ahead, but I also found a wealth of knowledge for me as well. I will definitely be using many of Nick Daniel's tips, and have made pages of notes already! Great book!
