What do you do when you're a sidekick with no powers apprenticed to Larry, The Universal Hero who is really just a big giant jerk? That's the central question being asked here. Larry's juvenile behavior and his accidental powers make him a hero, but he's not guided by a very strong moral compass. As a sidekick with a stronger moral fiber than Larry and the ability to think on his feet, Jesse yearns to have powers of his own but will he ever get them? When opportunity strikes, what will he do with it and what price must he pay to attain it? Filled with many hilarious moments lampooning popular super-heroes, the tale progresses into more serious territory as the story adroitly evolves into an impressive and profound deconstruction of what it truly means to be a hero, whether you have powers or not.I originally read this short story when it was published in the The Powers That Be: A Superhero Collection, an anthology filled with other great superhero stories just like this one. =)

In a world where superpowers are bestowed on a few lucky individuals, Jesse strives to get his own, but the more he tries, the more he ends up in the hospital, injured and disappointed. His boss is a superhero that never searched for his destiny, and his personality is not even remotely inspiring or charismatic. But when Jesse is given the choice of a lifetime something truly surprising happens. What makes a true hero? Read this beautiful story to find out.
