A colorful tapestry of emotions and motivations By Beate Boeker Candida Martinelli has skillfully woven a colorful tapestry of emotions and motivations in these 3 short stories, where each combines light and darkness in human nature.In HIGH SEASON, the student Lisa tries to help a naive tourist, Ms. McCarthy, to avoid the criminal pitfalls in Florence, but Ms. McCarthy doesn't appreciate the help. This story was made special because the hotel manager Lorenzo and the investigating officer Simon, two men who love Lisa like a father, stand behind her whenever she needs help.In LEAVES AND BEANS CAFÉ, two women develop a special friendship . . . and the last paragraphs give the story a totally unexpected spin.OUT OF THE DARKNESS is a romance which also ends in an unexpected way, but it leaves the reader hopeful that a happy end will come about in the future.Well written and edited, Ms. Martinelli masterfully portrays human weaknesses and feelings in this short story collection.

Thoughtful, well crafted short stories By Jonna Turek These three very different short stories share something besides the Italian settings, they are unpredictable. They also could provide the seeds of full-length novels, as the first and third stories leave the reader wondering what happens next and in the second, the characters could be expanded and their lives explored in greater depth in a novel. My favorite of the three is High Season. I would enjoy a series built around these likable, believable characters.Candida Martinelli shares her love of Italy in her writing and makes the reader feel at home there.

By Amazon Customer Perfect book you can take and read while waiting for an appointment or just to fill your evening. The stories are different and entertaining in a subtle kind of way. No need to be Italian to enjoy, but you may wish you were anyway. I liked the first story most, wasn't ready to see it end.
