About the Author Napoleon Higgins is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist whose focus is in treating mental health disorders. He is in private practice in the Houston area. He has started and developed many businesses. His private practice has grown from 1 physician being himself and his mother as his office manager. In the short period of 9 years, he has grown from his private practice to one of the largest group practices in the 4th largest city in the United States. His company, Bay Pointe Behavioral Health Service, Inc. now employs multiple clinicians including psychiatrists, physician extenders, therapists, and supporting staff. He believes that the lack of business acumen is greatly affecting the practice and delivery of health care around the country. It is his hope that the following book will help to alleviate the gap between clinical knowledge and business knowledge that is greatly lacking in the medical field.

By Tara Choobineh Transition 2 Practice is a practical, concise read, in the spirit of Fisher and Ury’s book Negotiating To Win, but geared especially towards physicians and those soon to be. Physicians, in spite of having the privilege (and responsibility) of innumerable years of education, are nearly universally woefully trained in concepts of business. This book lays the foundation for a more educated perspective on the non-medical aspects of the practice of medicine. The author, who boasts one of the largest group practices in the fourth largest city in the United States, imparts his invaluable wisdom and knowledge, in a most palatable, to-the-point format, regarding the business of medicine. This book is applicable to physicians in any stage of practice, with a recurring theme of the importance of negotiation skills. The author emphasizes the necessity of self-reflection, the fact (which is perspective-shifting for most people) that the only winning situation is when both parties win, and perhaps of utmost importance, that time is the quintessential currency. This book also advises concretely on intuition, interviewing, and specific subpopulations, such as gender and minority issues and physicians in various stages of their careers. I would recommend this book to every medical student and resident in particular, but also any physician without a business degree or extensive reading in the subject. After a minimum quarter century of education, physicians deserve appropriate compensation for the blood, sweat, and tears (quite literally) invested in their careers, and this book helps to achieve that.
