The blurred lines between reality, imagination and the ethereal can be very fine. These six short stories test the limits. A disturbing letter, an extreme phobia, a calculating psychopath, a woodland hunt, a lonely hotel, and a search for family all feature in this dark compilation.

It dates back to when it was made famous in Lovecraft’s work, and if done well it feels deeply personal and genuinely horrific. If done poorly, however, it feels very lazy and unstructured. It’s so easy to write a poor descent into madness, creating little more than a single sharp moment that sends a character tumbling into pointless random raving and babbled nonsense. As a reader of horror, we’ve all become quick to notice when this is done poorly. This collection of stories tends to vary quite drastically in how it attempts to do this, but in general each story skirts on the positive. There is a good range of variety between each of the stories that Huggins gives us, each attempting to grasp its own different theme and striving to set its own unique mood. One of the biggest stumbling blocks with short stories focused around insanity tends to be in pacing, but the author manages to keep the stories moving in a brisk and energetic pace that leaves the audience eager to keep up.The largest flaws encountered here are in terms of characterisation. Each character struggles to establish themselves as a separate, unique person, and that’s part of the trouble when you are writing in such a focused, introspective manner. The collection also has a slight problem in that it does not lead with one of the stronger stories, in fact the second story feels significantly more polished and engaging than the first, and many readers will have lost interest before they get the chance to enjoy this particular gem. “Crowded out” and “The Hanging Garden” are by far the strongest and best of the tales contained herein, the latter of which is genuinely gripping and a real joy to experience.Don’t let this put you off, though. ‘Disordered Minds’ is a lovely collection of very involving and often quite chilling short stories, all of which are definitely on the upper crust of insanity horror. If this is your bag, you could do far worse than to enjoy this excellent collection from a very skilled author.

His book, Disordered Minds surely illustrates Noel Coward’s famous stanza:“Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun,The Japanese don't care to, the Chinese wouldn’t dare to,Hindus and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to oneBut Englishmen detest-a siesta. “And sleep you won’t. In fact, after reading Mr. Huggins, you may find sleep comes hardly at all, despite the visage he paints of quaint village squares and lush English gardens. Horror is in his genes. My only criticism? Mr. Huggins? It was way too short. I’m sure people want more. I know I do.

What a wonderful collection of short scary imaginative stories By lisa bryan I read this book after reading another of Paul's called zombies, ghosts a psycho and a fight. What a wonderful collection of short scary imaginative stories. I even suggested a few could become main books because I didn't want them to end. Recommended reading.
