It gives an inside look at the political machinations of congress, business and lobbying influence. It is written as a thriller, but at the same time carries the message that more needs to be done to protect the earth against meteor and asteroid strikes. There are a host of characters and it would have been helpful to have a list in the beginning of who they were. Cohen does explain some of the background of the main character, Sean Falcone, who was in his previous book, ‘Blink of an Eye”. There are good explanations for his motivations and the psyche of Falcone. This plot also deals with a powerful business man and foreign powers. Cohen is of course familiar with DC politics and the city itself. However, he does make one mistake; he places the Albert Einstein Planetarium on the 1st floor of the Air and Space museum when it is on the 2nd floor. The plot at first seems complicated and there are all sorts of political and international implications, but it basically boils down to a private firm wanting to mine an asteroid and the fear of some that that might impact its course to hit earth. There are many arguments contained in the storyline regarding the need for an improved space treaty and budgetary increases for NASA. There is also the ever present mood that there is a loss of quality everywhere, bridges and roads falling apart, people never charged for breaking rules, and a disappearing middle class. The book is filled with legal, political and even senate hearing technicalities, but they make the plot more realistic and in a way can be a learning experience for the reader. The novel itself is a thriller that could become all too real in the near future. Those who enjoy political thrillers would like this book.

The villains are a little too bad and the conspiracies a little too complex By Robert R Holmes With an expertise in national security and government Cohen has credibility with the plot and the threats that he invents. His previous effort concerning a nuclear explosion within the US was gripping and believable, even though the conclusion was some what of a letdown. This newer book follows the pattern. The villains are a little too bad and the conspiracies a little too complex. Nevertheless the story is credible enough to hold your interest and the threats real enough to be frightening. This book is clearly the first of a pair which makes the story incomplete and the ending unsatisfying.
