Thomas J. Rice was born in rural Ireland. At thirteen he dropped out of school and immigrated to the United States, graduating from Cornell University. He received a PhD in sociology and spent twenty years in academe.
Rice’s academic life included serving as professor of sociology at Georgetown University, a research associate position at Harvard, and a stint as an NEH Fellow at Berkeley. He is the coauthor of four books and over fifty articles and essays in refereed academic journals and editorial pages.
Turning to full-time writing in 2007, Rice’s first novella Hard Truths was selected by Otto Penzler and Robert Crais for inclusion in The Best American Mystery Stories of 2012. Far from the Land: An Irish Memoir was published in 2010. His short stories, “All Souls’ Day,” and “The Night of the Arabian,” were published in 2013 and 2014, respectively. . Rice is currently writing Finding Nora, a novel set in Ireland, about a woman’s search for her birth mother.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved his first book By David H. Green Author Thomas Rice has just hit another home run with his short novella Carby's Fate. I loved his first book, Far From the Land (highly recommend it!) and in a different way love this story of a disputed estate in a small Irish town. Told through the eyes and voice of the all-knowing bartender, this little drama is packed full of interesting characters and wonderful dialogue. Carby, the central character is initially isolated and anti-social. When the inheritance he expected is challenged by unusual circumstances, he transforms into a rallying point for the local patrons of the pub. At issue is the tradition of primogeniture and how that is now being questioned by modernity.Thomas Rice employs his talents as a great storyteller to reveal the "soul" of the individuals and the collective. The story he tells is very Irish and local in nature, but like his other novel, evokes the universal condition we all find ourselves in. Of course there is a romantic angle in the story (lovely Molly) which keeps it light at times and fun to read. The ending is well-written and surprising. This story is just a little more than 100 pages. I enjoyed being able to read it in just a few sittings. Perfect for vacation reading, plane rides or the beach! I would write more but I don't want to spoil your enjoyment by revealing too much.

By Peter Gibb CARBY'S FATE is a beautifully written, tension packed drama, in which characters who could be right off the boat from Ireland, seem to invade the reader's living room. Carby is a grouchy, unlikeable character, fighting a lost cause. But we come to accept him, at first grudgingly, but as we get swept up in the dynamics of the town, we come to accept him. The drama is laced with great dialogue, lovely lyric language, and descriptions of the Irish countryside that make you thirst to be there. Thomas Rice is a master story teller at work. He shows a deep understanding and love for his native land, and an appreciation for its history, and yet he can laugh at the foibles of character.

By daniel martin Carby’s Fate is the story of a family dispute over inherited property, though perhaps it is more accurately the story of a community struggle over land and its deep meaning for a long-time colonized people, in the spirit of John B Keane’s play, The Field.It is a great story but, more important, it is a story that is well told. For it is clear that the author knows these country people of Ireland intimately: their lives, their thinking and their habits of interaction. It is also clear that he loves them by the ways in which he goes to the trouble of presenting much more than the drama but also the deeper hopes and fears that drive it.His narrator reflects this love in the way he describes the characters, particularly the main character of the drama who does little to endear himself to anyone. You get the sense that there is more to this rather crude and unattractive person, which emerges finally as the story comes to a climax. You can certainly feel the pain he has endured since childhood and continues to endure from the scornful attitude of his neighbors. At the same time, lest he appear as simply a victim, the author also lets us see into the hearts of these neighbors who contribute to his pain even as they support his cause.However, he has little sympathy for the character who proves to be the catalyst that brings the entire process to a head – perhaps because he is an outsider with no sense of the family dynamic that is at play – though he holds back from biasing us too much until the very end when the tragedy has run its course and it no longer matters.I was deeply moved by the denouement which is really an unraveling that still leaves enough threads for a promising new tapestry. Not unlike the story of Ireland itself. In fact, this wonderful little vignette is a true microcosm and even a symbol of an Irish culture that the modern world is in the process of breaking into and breaking down.Daniel Martin
