“EARLY STAGE PROFESSIONAL: getting it right” is designed to help the very smart, but professionally unsophisticated group of employees who are in the workplace: those in their first five years following graduation. The book provides Early Stage Professionals ("ESP's") with everything that they need to meet their goals as they move from early stage through to more sophisticated, Growth Stage Professionals. Everything means charting out the basics (when to get into the office, how to take vacation, have effective one-to-ones with their manager) through to the more difficult topics such as the appropriate expectations of managers, dealing with workplace conflict, how to avoid office politics and everything in between. This is a battlefield- (ok workplace-) tested guide to being successful as an ESP. This is not a “if you do this you will be Mark Zuckerberg” work of fiction (although if it leads to that, then great!). Instead this is a realistic guide for everyone who wants to succeed in their first five years and ensure that they can meet their personal goals over a 45+ year career (skilled individual contributor, first level manager and then onto something even more lofty and maybe even CEO). It is not a get rich scheme! It is "real". Being "real" is important. As I say above there are books out there that set recent graduates up to fail primarily by setting sky high expectations (CEO by 29, founder of multi-billion dollar business by 30 etc) which can make Early Stage Professionals feel like failures and so trip them up by making poor decisions either in the workplace (misplaced ideas on how to get ahead that cause more harm than good). In addition to setting ESP’s up to be disappointed they do not provide good advice on how to achieve in their early years in the work place as well as help define what success really is. All this is a recipe if not for disaster, then certainly sadness and confusion! Move over Helicopter Parents (or maybe “Buy this for your ESP Helicopter Parents”!), this is a truly invaluable guide for “Professionals in the Making” and compared to the $100,000+ cost of college education is a bargain!

About the Author Fergus Mellon is an experienced manager and Digital Media executive who has worked in a variety of businesses in the United States and the United Kingdom for approximately 15 years. Fergus is currently Head of Creative Services for The Americas at Criteo a fast growth, $3 billion digital media company listed on Nasdaq with offices throughout the world and headquartered in Paris, France. He manages a team responsible for $100m+ in annual advertising revenue from offices in New York City and Sao Paulo. In addition to leading the Creative Services team he is also Head of CRM & Offline Attribution, a strategic initiative that he is spearheading in the North American market. As such he is a true left/right brain manager able to work with and develop the huge variety of talents and skills that all businesses contain. He has managed early stage talent at companies of all shapes and sizes, from venture backed businesses (Meebo, acquired by Google and Federated Media, founded by John Battelle), large established US businesses (Gannett and AOL) and global "rapid growth" companies (Criteo). Fergus has had a successful career (but not outrageously so!) and was a Senior Vice President at Gannett, then a multi-billion dollar business listed on the New York Stock Exchange, by the age of 36. At the time Fergus worked at Gannett it was the largest newspaper company in the US. While successful in his career, Fergus does not write from a gold (or silicon!) plated executive tower, but instead from the perspec-tive of a manager who still has to turn up to work every day and save for his retirement (ideally in 2040!). He knows the day-to-day issues and the professional lives of the ESP that he is looking to help and coach through "Early Stage Professional: starting off right". Prior to his move into Digital, Fergus worked in the Financial Services industry in London where he worked in Financial PR/Investor Relations (Buchanan Communications) and Consumer Banking (Abbey National, now Bank Santander). He has experience of working globally across Europe, North America and Latin America. A dual British / American citizen who moved to Washington DC in 2003, Fergus currently lives in New York City with his wife, Sabeen. Fergus is a graduate of Georgetown University (MBA), The University of Warwick (BA Politics) and The University of Durham (MA Management). Contact: fergus@whattheferg.com

This book as an easy and entertaining read By Sarah Jenkins Very readable, light-hearted and honest look at the world of early stage professionals, a demographic which is often forgotten in business literature. This book as an easy and entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to any college grad about to enter the workforce!

By Jerome Wong This book presents a great balance between managing your own expectations and understanding the expectations of your manager. Both need to be aligned in order for young professionals to succeed and move up the corporate ladder. There is a lot of pragmatic advice for both day-to-day situations as well as planning long-term strategic decisions. Definitely worth reading to gain the perspective of the people who will be making important decisions in your professional career - it's like getting a copy of the exam before taking it!Jerome WongPresidentwww.realworldexperts.com

A fast easy read filled with an arsenal of best practices to start your career right and punctuated with earnest illustrations straight from the author’s own experience. It’s also a great read for “mid/late” stage professionals; it is just as much a refresher on management do’s and don’ts as it can fill some of the gaps for those who didn’t get a chance to be mentored early on in their careers. It’s never too late. "We do have 45+ years of career that we have to deal with."
