By Doug Nordman I've been retired for over 13 years (since the age of 41), and I wish this book had been published a couple of decades ago!Ms. Birken's an experienced personal-finance writer. She guides you through the entire retirement process, but first she helps you figure out your personal perspective on money. Your childhood will influence your financial attitudes of avoidance, status, worship, or vigilance.Once you understand how your money scripts will help (or hinder) your retirement, she shows you how to brainstorm five steps that you'd take for a fantasy big-dream retirement. You'll also think through your bare-bones "Plan B" retirement and meld it all into a goal that matches your values. You'll base your plan on your projected expenses and then figure out how much to invest-- as well as how to tap your funds after you stop working. Her checklists and worksheets make sure that you cover all the details, and she includes plenty of references to help you check your planning.She debunks the most popular myths about your retirement and then takes you through the lifestyle considerations: family, downsizing, inflation, healthcare, retiring early, moving, travel, living overseas, part-time jobs, and even returning to school.You'll finish the book with a much clearer vision of how to get to your retirement!(I read a galley provided by the publisher/author. By JMGgamer I picked this up wanting to have a better understanding of what I'll need to start prepping for retirement. I'm self-employed now and while I always felt secure in retirement that was only because I threw a bunch of money at deferred comp and figured I was good to go. I'm 34 now, and realized that the earlier I make sure I know what I need to do the better. I read this cover to cover and took notes (which if you ask me is the only way you should read a book like this). Having finished, I can say that I truly understand what I need to do to retire and now have a plan of what retirement looks like to me. I feel a million times better having a plan and getting to have a peek into my future, especially with having a plan to back it up and make sure it happens. Great buy!

By Annette I am 53 years old, and while I'm not all that close to retirement, I can see the prospect hoovering on the horizon. I've started to pay attention to what other people say about retirement in the news and on financial websites and blogs. And what other people say about retirement is often terribly confusing. Enter Emily Guy Birken and her book "Choose Your Own Retirement: Find the Right Path to Your New Adventure." Ms. Birken deftly cuts through all the confusion, and finally, some of the process starts to make sense.The first part of this book asks you to take a hard look at how you think about money, and this is valuable, because how you think about money plays a role in how you invest and how you spend when you retire. Ms. Birken also helps debunk all the popular retirement myths that seem to be the staple advice offered by other experts. And then she gives you tools to analyze your own finances to see what works best for you.However, my favorite section of the book is the one that asks you to really think about what you want to do in retirement. Do you want to travel? Then you may have to put away more funds in order to retire, travel, and be happy. I love the fact that the author suggests you think about your typical retirement day, for both you and your spouse. I think, too often, people just assume they'll enjoy living in Florida, but the reality of it--of having no close family, no close friends, no community ties--is much different than they expect.This resource has some of expected "Let's crunch the numbers" chapters, but they are written it readable text that was not intimidating. Ms. Birken also offers insightful chapters on retiring early and on working part-time during retirement. She truly covers all the bases here. If you are looking for a good retirement planning resource to start the process, then this is the book for you.
