With over 1/6th of the world's population, building a Golden India is not just critical for India and its people, it is just as important for the world. With 20-26 million children born each year in India, it is also an urgent issue. If education is the key to unleashing people’s potential, then higher education, which sits at a critical junction of the society and nation, is the master key. Higher education system includes universities, colleges, and vocational schools. An eye-opener on the state of education in India By Rishabh Jain This is a very thorough, well-organized book on the current state of education in India and how it can be transformed to enable "the building of a Golden India." India's current state in terms of its education infrastructure and capability is despondent and alarming. For a country of its size, cultural legacy and current standing in the league of nations, India's education infrastructure needs an enormous revamp to enable even basic opportunities for the millions of kids who will need higher education in the coming decades. Something that stands out is the minute nature of analysis and collection of statistics throughout the book which makes the author's case on the enormity of the challenges very compelling. Consider these:"470 million people, accounting for 39 percent of India's population are under the age of 18." That's more than 1.5 times the entire population of the US. However, "only 50% aged 8-11 enrolled in government schools were able to read a simple paragraph with three sentences (India human development survey 04-05)". This sad statistic is one of many which illustrates the quality of education available in India today. Clearly, there is a lot to do.After a careful analysis of the existing challenges to India's education system, the book then explores successful models of education across time - from India's ancient Nalanda University to top US universities today. The author convincingly argues that India perhaps need to borrow ideas from its own past glory and its democratic ally USA and develop a hybrid model for the India of tomorrow - something that blends the free-thinking, multi-disciplinary spirit of ancient Nalanda with the entrepreneurial and technological vibrancy of the current US system. The author's own past administrative experience in top US universities helps him bring forth deep insights into what makes them tick.Differing from the "broken window syndrome" that afflicts armchair critics, the author proposes a comprehensive roadmap for recovery for India's education infrastructure, arguing for a bold vision with an emphasis on excellence and meritocracy. I particularly liked the clear targets and plans proposed in the book for this seemingly impossible endeavor. The book finishes on an optimistic note hoping to have jolted the audience into some degree of urgency to contribute in whatever way they can.India forms one-fifth of humanity today. Its progress is not just the imperative of a nation but a vast swathe of humanity. Transforming India's education sector will change the world. Hopefully, the book will interest not just Indians and Indophiles but everybody who wants to see a better world which has access to universal education. This book is a tome of statistics for those of us with an analytical bent of mind and a trove of views, experiences and anecdotes for the raconteurs among us. It is a well-researched roadmap for action for policy makers and stakeholders in India's education system. It is a glimpse into a large nation's challenge to transform itself. Go buy it today.
