Noir that's new By tom larsen Take a stolen overcoat, a porn eating pedophile, two arsonist, and a killed killer and and you're in Tony Knighton's city of brotherly love. Add a hit and runner, a psycho and his shrink, and a Christmas surprise and it's pulp fiction at it's finest. Throw in an ivory poacher for good measure and you've got Happy Hour and other Philadelphia Cruelties, Knighton's stellar short story collection. Knighton serves up the seamy side like an old school master and his inner city slant is wide ranging and brutally authentic. Knighton captures the mean street essence of Philadelphia in a way that will dazzle those familiar and enlighten those who aren't. Not since David Goodis has the city seen a bare knuckled writer of this calliber. Knighton's characters resonate with the sort of hard luck and desperation that only the good ones can conjure. Rich in atmosphere and real world dialogue, Knighton spins stories that stick with you. His breakneck pace and quick twist endings will leave you breathless.

I was particularly interested in Chapter 3: on the level of risk. Compared to other commercial real estate investing books on the market at the moment, I found this one to be most helpful with my commercial property ventures! If you are just starting out though, I'd recommend starting off with residential real estate investing books.

About the Author Igor Ponochevnyi was born on October 15, 1967 in Penza, accidentally. In 1971 he transferred to Leningrad, today's St. Petersburg, where he was learning the craft of drawing since childhood. Graduated from Serov Art School.In 2014, the next day after the Crimea occupation, he gave birth to a 7-year-old boy named Alesha Stupin from Reutovo, now infamous for his patriotic drawings. Then he quit his day job, started a blog and began publishing short stories on acute issues: political satire, love and romance, and fantasy of the absurd.He has authored two books of short stories, a novella and an Alesha Stupin's art album. He also writes a regular column for the Israeli magazine Beseder, with illustrations. Currently, he is hiding from the Russian authorities in San Francisco of the USA

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. pure delight By Svetlana Igor Ponochevnyi has a very rare ability to see the funny in something dead serious and the serious in something funny. With two very successful books published in Russian, Ponochenvyi is often compared to famous Russian writers of the absurd, such as Zoschenko, Kharms and even Platonov. This is the first collection of short stories by Ponochevnyi in English, and those English speakers who will read it for the first time are in for a great journey. The stories will make one laugh and cry, many times in turns and sometimes at the same time. They will make one discover or rethink the modern Russian reality as it is seen through the eyes of Jesus, who lives in today's St. Petersburg. In this sense, the last story stands out as an exception and an ode to Love that will make the reader cry and want to read the stories from the very beginning again.

By John Martin This book of little stories is full of ironies that only contemporary Russia could create, and humor that makes you laugh until you think through how sad all this is. The translation captures what can only be a Russian Jesus, with his quirky language and earthy directness. My only quibblr is that it went too quickly - not too many stories. Really fun to read.

They all enjoy it tremendously. The English translation is excellent and renders the original meaning very well. And it is such a great idea - to publish books in two languages, so that those who study both can compare and learn. Thank you for this little gem!
