9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Not sure why this was on the Best Seller's List? By Amazon Customer This was disappointing, having seen it on the Best Seller's List. I did not care for the characters, and by the time the plot unfolded, I no longer cared who did what to whom. It was not particular well written, seemed repetitive in parts, and took me a month to actually finish the book. Certainly not a compelling read.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Slow start but suspenseful. By BJVG I always get hung up on details that tend to make the story less realistic. For example, except for Evie, the baby, the characters exist on alcohol, coffee and tea. Nobody eats, yet Rachel is overweight. Also, I don't think any psychiatrist in the United States (or in Britain) would make a house call, though it was necessary for Rachel to see him at Megan's house. I realize the author had to shift the point-of-view of each character's story in order to have the novel end the way it does, but she could have done with fewer shifts. In fact the book could have been about 50 pages shorter. However the suspense was great, though there were too many close calls for Rachel, and I wasn't prepared for Anna to suddenly realize that Tom would never trust her, that she would be in danger, so that she would believe Rachel's story. She seemed more shallow than that. But anyway, the author makes Rachel and her battle with alcohol realistic. The description of Scott's deterioration and the details of his dirty house were excellent.

Executive summary without the fluff By Adam Stevens Familiar with reading executive summaries, leaving out all of the fluff, and hitting on only the important facts and highlights all at the same time, I found this short read concise and to the point. At one point I thought the girl on the train was just a drunk, and dreamed the entire sequence, but as the plot details twisted and turned like a high speed steel rollercoaster, I was shocked when the murder mystery seemed solved. I enjoyed this summary of plot points, while letting my own imagination fill in the gaps. The chronological journal breakdown by chapter was easy to read, easy to understand. I do not think the full version of the book would have held my interest or attention span with as much suspense as this summary suggests. I am happy that I can say that through this experience, I understand the story, and its meaning. I hope to read more summaries like this in the future.
