By Mr. Richard Lw Bunning Here we have an interesting montage of short stories, which actually are 'just the ticket' to set the dreams rolling as one lays down one's head. Well, a couple of the stories may cause nightmares, but at least one won't be worrying about the unfilled tax return, or how about how to get to work and the kids to school. We are all different, so do bear in mind that horror does creep from the page to the dark.I really enjoyed the way the words are put together as much as the stories themselves. Johnson writes very easy prose. The writing often has the grace and effortless flow of swans on water, with the sometimes surprising and unsettling flurries of that species. Swans have their warning hiss, and sudden explosions of power. As the cover says, there is certainly mystery and fantasy in these stories, though perhaps suspense is rather over egging the content. These are short stories, some of which have strong impact, but suspense usually conjures up rather longer drawn out tensions. It wouldn't be right for the cover wording to attract someone expecting the tension that it is hard to generate outside of a novel, for them to then be unjustifiably critical because of unsatisfied expectation. I'm sure I will revisit one or two of the stories that particularly grabbed my uniquely raised attention, these being the ones with a more speculative, metaphysical bent to them. This is a short book of short stories that really are best read one at a time, as each one deserves some time for reflection. I decided I was doing both Johnson and most definitely myself a disservice by reading the book in one sitting. So I actually re-visited to read most of the stories again, one at a time. The whole book is short, not just each story. I hope that you will agree with me that twenty six stories would have been better than thirteen. I'm not thinking in terms of cost in coin. The stories finish with the now rarely used word Cockaigne- a suitable name for a land of nod. SweetBerry dreams!

A Simple and Stunning Success By Veritas Vincit The perfect mixture of surrealism and prophetic fiction is hard to find, but in Johnson's collection of bizarre short stories, he manages to strike a fine balance between the two, often within the same story. This is not only a grouping of odds and ends; One Before Bedtime is a carefully curated mix of societal fears and personal fantasies, discussing the things that scare us as often as the things that should scare us, but are easily ignored. I like that throughout the course of any given story, you were never quite sure what was going to jump out from around the proverbial corner: paranormal, psychological, philosophical? It was a pretty impressive gamut of topics and musings from the author, and to compact them into easily digestible stories that could be read in a single sitting....well, I think it's a success. I enjoy a bit of light reading before bed, and although some of these stories did get the wheels churning in my head, it was a pleasant way to finish a day. The strength of the characters carries each story, and the author isn't afraid to slow down the pace of writing in order to exorcise every detail in certain parts, revealing a confidence and a love of storytelling that is refreshing to come across.

Staughton This was a clever and concise collection of stories that were just the right size to grab me, pique my interest, thrill me, and then let me go. I liked how even the most mysterious and wondrous things in the world can be summed up in bite-size pieces, and I didn't feel like the tales were rushed or abbreviated either. Johnson has a wonderful talent for creating a rapid story arc within a short story and letting it play out organically. A master draftsman, clearly, these stories thrilled and delighted, frightened, amused, and even provoked some interesting dreams. This is truly a collection of the weird and wonderful on display, and for lovers of every genre from horror to slapstick comedy writing, there is something in here for you. It's amazing that a range of skill can be displayed in only 13 stories; Johnson puts on a subtle, impressively well-written show in these pages, and it's well worth a purchase.
