Entrepreneur to Oil Baron By Lynn Lyon I have collaborated with part of the Hess team with their admirable work to use natural gas that would be flared to fuel operations in the Bakken but did not know the company's history.I enjoyed reading about Leon Hess, the entrepreneur, the visionary, the risk taker as well as the loyal family man, friend and philanthropist.The chapters related to expanding downstream operations and refineries as demand grew in the U.S. after the war were especially interesting because my experience in the industry has been upstream.His vision to invest in a broad-based industry and create jobs is from an era before companies were managed by their quarterly earnings reports.His son, family and the company are respected and well-positioned in the industry having weathered the early years of the shale revolution.The book is well written and shares insight of a successful but private man who built a successful public company.I bought a copy for my father for Christmas. I look forward to hearing his thoughts on the history of Hess.

Though as in most thrillers the conclusion is mandatory, this one sports a slight twist most won't see coming.The main character, Brad, is about as unlikeable as a man without hope can get, but not even he deserves what he gets. Or does he? Sometimes Karma IS a "B"! Choosing to do nothing is a choice, and often it is the wrong one. The reader will have to decide for themself if the characters in this story make the right choices. Since this is such a short work, saying much more about it would give too much away. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*“The Haunt” by L. Marshall James is a 38 page novelette about a man whose behavior comes back to haunt him, literally. Brad, the main character, is not a likable character. He deserves what happens to him to an extent. He’s a foul-mouthed, thieving drunk. Still, on some level, I felt sorry for him. I thought the author did a good job of characterization, considering the short length of the story, but there was a lot of missing information. I didn’t even have an idea of if he was young, middle-aged, or old.I liked how the author got right to the problem without a lot of set-up. It’s a quick read, not only because of the length but because it doesn’t mill around.The setting was interesting. I had never read a book before with the main character working in an auto junkyard. However, there isn’t much detail beyond his work and home. I didn’t know what city he was in or anything. To some readers, that might not matter much. To others who have to know all those details, it would be frustrating because the author didn’t waste time on things that didn’t affect the main character directly. As I said, some readers will like that while others will not.Overall, I felt this was a well-written piece. The horror elements were pretty standard. I wasn’t scared because it was obvious what was going to happen. I would have liked Brad to have been in more danger.I was confused for a minute near the end. But, once I had all the pieces, everything made perfect sense. So, although I wasn’t scared, I enjoyed reading this story because it had an interesting plot twist.I would recommend this story to readers who want a short piece to read with some surprises. I give “The Haunt” four stars for pacing, writing style, and plot. If it were revised, I think this story would be best left as a novelette or novella, with a few setting and character details added, and maybe some more direct attacks on Brad. This is not to imply that it needs to be revised, but I like to offer suggestions in case an author chooses to do so later on down the road.

By Peggy Geiger Genre: Mystery and ThrillerThe primary character is Brad, a foul-mouthed alcoholic on a downhill slide. During the day, he works in a junkyard, alternating his time by playing cards on the office computer and filling orders of selected parts from the wrecked cars. Evenings and weekends, he spends time with his dog while fixing up his wrecked truck. Brad becomes continually annoyed by a mysterious caller that stays on the line breathing, but won't talk to him. The series of strange phone calls come both at home and at work. He begins to feel spooked, as though there is someone else in the junkyard. This is a very short story, it will take you about an hour or less to read. Although a quick read, I was drawn into the story immediately. The author held my attention all the way through. I kept wanting to flip to the next page and see what happened to Brad. The story has a great unexpected twist at the end that I did not see coming.I highly recommend this novella and would like to read more stories of this caliber from this author.The ARC was courtesy of the author in exchange for a fair review.

In all business they will find "bottlenecks" these are areas that cause profit loss and often failure of a company. The steps to overcoming these bottlenecks are 1. identifying what this area consists of. 2. deciding how to utilize them 3. Making a priority of utilizing the problem. 4. Taking steps to prevent it from reoccuring. 5. is using the above steps is preparing for the next onset to occur. Stating they tend to move from one operation to another. Overall the writing style of this author is easy to follow. The process of steps guide the reader to analyze and identify what their problem areas are. Next very clearly help to eliminate and be better prepared for next problem. I could not find any faults with this book. Although I received this item at a free and or discounted price in exchange for an honest review, it does not change my opinion on product.

It provides a potential reader enough information regarding this book’s content to determine if we want to invest the extra money and time to actually buy and read the entire book. As an avid reader I have personally found “Instaread” to be a very helpful and valuable service.

This book gives an overview on what the original book is about and then lists and analyzes 10 key takeaways for the reader. Topics of discussion include how to measure profitability of a manufacturing operation and how to overcome constraints. My husband is very interested in how business are run, and it is a common topic of discussion in our home. I found this summary to be helpful and enjoyable to read.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun adventures... By HeroProtagonist ...through the seedy streets of Hollywood. These writers know the gritty lives of Angelenos. There's a great variety of sub-genres within the noir short stories to satisfy anyone's craving. The specific characters and settings run the gamut. Some stories enthralled me, some were not my personal taste, and a few I never wanted to end (could they become...MOVIES?). The standout for me was Wendall Thomas's glorious "LOSER FRIEND"; a knowing examination of the clique straggler who hasn't "made it". Anyone who has survived L.A. past the infamous Two Year Mark has been the third wheel to successful industry friends, and will identify with this "privileged outsider" vantage point and cheer for the wish fulfillment. Definitely a feature in that story. But weeks after reading "LAdies Night," I also found myself thinking fondly of characters from "IDA & AGGIE" who could give Angela Landsbury a run for her money...and the cool world-building of "TOXIC." This anthology was a satisfying, solid buy put on by an organization I felt happy to have been introduced to through this fundraising collection. Rock on, badass lady characters and the writers who love them!

I am not equal to the work By Smoore Beautiful, self aware, thought provoking, I can't recommend this book enough.I read this while trying to write an honest artist statement without institutional artspeak and found Colby's honesty and form to be a helpful lens to think through. While I examined my own practice / patterns / compulsions, I observed her do the same quite lucidly and so articulately. The poem that comprises the first 65ish pages is also everything I've ever wanted in a poem.

It is by far my favorite By Heather Ray This is the 3rd and final part of the Fur the Moment trillogy and it does not dissapoint! It picks up where part 2 left off, the fire in the appartment. Minnie is burned and Ceecee is full of guilt at the fire being her fault. She can't take care of her own sister, much less be co-alph to the pride. Ceecee has and does some growing up in this part. When she finally comes out of the appartment, she volunteers at a soup kitchen. Her heat has passed so at least she had some relief there even though her mates are determined to get her to speak to them. She decides to help her sister in a way that will destroy her modeling future, she thinks of someone else before herself. Ceecee talks to her leopard again, then decides to go to her mates.Scortching hot and an HEA, what more can you ask for? I have read all of Ruby's books to date and I think this series is the best. It is by far my favorite.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This last part made me cry, scream and cheer at one point or another. Ceecee must overcome the guilt she feels after something goes wrong and her sister is injured. She lets Stanley and Dane know that she won't be their mate and closes herself from everyone in her life. When she finally has a chance to make her dreams come true she decides to make a change that will change the course of her life forever. Stanley and Dane are there after her decision and show her that true beauty comes from within. I was glad that Dane was the one who finally got Ceecee to understand and to accept them as mates. This last part ends with a HEA and hopefully we will get a story featuring Ceecee's BBF.I received a copy of this book for a honest review....

It continues the story right from where book 2 left off.Minnie accidently is burned in a fire and Ceecee blames herself for it. Because of what happens Ceecee walks away from Dane and Stanley and the possibility of happy ever after as their mate. She quits her job and hides away for awhile letting her guilt eat at her. Dane and Stanley try to reach out to her but she doesn't reply backCan Dane and Stanley get her to come back and be their mate? Will Ceecee learn to forgive herself for the accident? The books in this trilogy are:Book #1 Beguiling the BeautyBook #2 Ravishing the HeiressBook #2.5 A Dance in MoonlightBook #3 Tempting the BrideThis little Novella - "A Dance in Moonlight" just didn't do it for me. The reader may have already become acquainted with the heroine, Isabelle, in "Ravishing the Heiress" - she was in love with the impoverished Earl Fitzhugh (Fitz) but alas he had to marry an heiress so he and Isabelle never got together as they had planned. I suppose this book is the author's way of letting her readers know how Isabelle's life turned out. And, in fact, the story starts out with a bang.*Minor Spoilers*Isabelle is preparing to depart from her country manor - Doyle's Grange - where she has been living while attempting to get on with her life. She has loved Fitz since forever but all hopes of having him for her very own are now gone. However, as she is leaving Doyle's Grange, she runs into a man in front of her home and believing him to be Fitz, embraces him with excitement thinking he has come to her after all. In fact, it is not Fitz but the man is very nearly a double of Fitz.The story is about their acquaintance and their eventual romance. The first few pages were interesting, then it seemed as though the story just became blah! Where was the Sherry Thomas who wrote "Not Quite a Husband" or even "Tempting the Bride" which was also a very interesting read?Sherry Thomas is one gifted writer - my favorite book of hers is "Not Quite a Husband." I was utterly enthralled with the storyline and the writing. It is one of the most amazing love stories I have ever read. Her website and author's page is among the first I turn to when checking out current books. Because some of her books are so amazing, I will continue to buy her books in the hopes she will eventually turn out another winner.

As improbable as the premise is, I enjoyed the banter between the two main characters very much at first and felt they connected well. As the story goes on, though, the tone became increasingly saccharine. I found the HEA rushed, over the top, and sickeningly sweet. I prefer the author's longer novels, though she can be a bit heavy-handed with the angst and her some of her male characters are exceptionally stupid.

The talent of a good author is in a brief novel to explore peoples's feelings. Why do they make authors write during deadlines?? It makes them not so genuine, don't you think?

I wonder, in puzzlement (and anger and fear) where the boy I used to be disappeared to. This collection of short stories helps me see the path I followed from there to here. Historian Dick Snyder, influenced by developmental psychologist Erik Erikson, uses intertwined short stories to trace his characters’ lives through the adventures and traumas of early life along a boomerang path to soaring heights in the middle years and then back to its beginnings, with the main character older but certainly wiser and able to view the future with a smile and chuckle.Snyder’s fortitude and optimism help me smile when I do my morning mirror check, although I have not quite managed a chuckle yet. He handles the Erik Erikson framework lightly, and concentrates on telling a good story. As you read on, you meet the characters at different times in their lives, and it is like meeting and catching up with old friends. An excellent collection of short stories.

By Stephanie Lehenbauer I read this story as part of the "Tales of Tinfoil" anthology, and it clearly stood out. I'm gobbling up everything I can by this author right now, and this story was no exception from the high-quality writing and emotional intensity that I've come to expect of his work.In Chukotka, we see two stories collide: one of two American men lost at sea in a storm; the other, an elderly Eskimo hunter grappling with the end of his life. They come together in a story that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you breathless with awe at the power of the natural world. In particular I loved Umqy's story. I felt so much for him, a man diminished in the eyes of his people, no longer worthy of the respect he once commanded, and his attempts to ensure that he would no longer be a burden. I was both sad and proud of him, and couldn't help but cheer for him--even when I was hardly sure to what end I was cheering.The Americans' tale is interesting, although not as strong for me as that of Umqy. However, through their story, you get those hints of conspiracy and treachery, which made Chukotka part of the "Tales of Tinfoil" anthology.Well worth the read. This story will stick with you long after you read it.

As two Americans sail out to the Bering Sea to run some supplies to Alaska, they get caught in a mysterious storm which comes out of nowhere. On land, we meet Umqy, an old man following the old ways, on his way to die to give himself honor one final time. The two stories eventually intersect but how can it be related to research on the ionosphere during that very fateful day? Thrilling in that you wonder whether they will survive while two different cultures collide, can they find a mutual understanding in their desire to persevere in the face of all odds? This engrossing struggle doesn't end until the very last tragic page, as we learn what truly happened to them out there.I originally read this short story when it was published in Tales of Tinfoil: Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy, an anthology filled with other tales of conspiracy just like this one. =)

I confess I was puzzled by the incipit of the story as an email exchange, but once the real narrative started I couldn't put the book down. The descriptions of the weather and rough conditions on the boat are gripping. The pace is tense, and the story very emotional. Two men, Scott and Mike are caught in a powerful storm in Alaska as they go on a mission to check on a military experiment. In the meantime, an Eskimo hunter comes to terms with the fact that he's dying and heads out for his last hunt. Extreme survival overcomes the language barrier as the men fight fight frigid temperatures and predators to save their lives. A beautifully written, edge-of-the-seat adventure. And like I said, the descriptions of the storm jump out of the page.
