This story originally appeared in Tales of Tinfoil: Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy in April 2015, curated and edited by David Gatewood. "By turns gripping, heartbreaking, and inspiring, Chukotka is a tale of survival against the elements—and of a fragile trust formed between two men from vastly different worlds. Bale’s characters come to life, and they will stay with you long after the final paragraph." David Gatewood, bestselling editor of The Robot Chronicles and Tales of Tinfoil “Stunning work from a fresh new voice in science fiction. Highly recommended.” Ernie Lindsey, USA Today bestselling author of Sara’s Game and Super “Courage is thrust upon us by necessity. Gripping and realistic, Chukotka captures the bitter struggle and confusion that arises as the Bering Strait reels beneath an unnatural storm. It is both engrossing and compelling.” Peter Cawdron, bestselling author of Anomaly and Xenophobia “Tense and compelling, Bale weaves a page-turning and heart-wrenching survival tale of two cultures.” Jennifer Ellis, bestselling author of The Mosquito Constellation and A Pair of Docks Two Alaskan cold-water surfers sail the Bering Strait in search of the gnarliest waves. A dying Chukchi hunter leaves his village for the desolate Siberian tundra, seeking to prove his usefulness to the wayward youth of his people. When the perfect man-made storm provokes the towering black waves of the Bering, and surges over the frozen Russian wilderness, it throws together old and young, East and West, forcing them to confront their prejudices in a desperate fight for survival. This is a short story which could be read in an hour or so. It runs to around 50 paperback pages.

By Stephanie Lehenbauer I read this story as part of the "Tales of Tinfoil" anthology, and it clearly stood out. I'm gobbling up everything I can by this author right now, and this story was no exception from the high-quality writing and emotional intensity that I've come to expect of his work.In Chukotka, we see two stories collide: one of two American men lost at sea in a storm; the other, an elderly Eskimo hunter grappling with the end of his life. They come together in a story that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you breathless with awe at the power of the natural world. In particular I loved Umqy's story. I felt so much for him, a man diminished in the eyes of his people, no longer worthy of the respect he once commanded, and his attempts to ensure that he would no longer be a burden. I was both sad and proud of him, and couldn't help but cheer for him--even when I was hardly sure to what end I was cheering. The Americans' tale is interesting, although not as strong for me as that of Umqy. However, through their story, you get those hints of conspiracy and treachery, which made Chukotka part of the "Tales of Tinfoil" anthology.Well worth the read. This story will stick with you long after you read it.

As two Americans sail out to the Bering Sea to run some supplies to Alaska, they get caught in a mysterious storm which comes out of nowhere. On land, we meet Umqy, an old man following the old ways, on his way to die to give himself honor one final time. The two stories eventually intersect but how can it be related to research on the ionosphere during that very fateful day? Thrilling in that you wonder whether they will survive while two different cultures collide, can they find a mutual understanding in their desire to persevere in the face of all odds? This engrossing struggle doesn't end until the very last tragic page, as we learn what truly happened to them out there.I originally read this short story when it was published in Tales of Tinfoil: Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy, an anthology filled with other tales of conspiracy just like this one. =)
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. very emotional and beautifully written By Elena E.G. I confess I was puzzled by the incipit of the story as an email exchange, but once the real narrative started I couldn't put the book down. The descriptions of the weather and rough conditions on the boat are gripping. The pace is tense, and the story very emotional. Two men, Scott and Mike are caught in a powerful storm in Alaska as they go on a mission to check on a military experiment. In the meantime, an Eskimo hunter comes to terms with the fact that he's dying and heads out for his last hunt. Extreme survival overcomes the language barrier as the men fight fight frigid temperatures and predators to save their lives. A beautifully written, edge-of-the-seat adventure. And like I said, the descriptions of the storm jump out of the page.
