Hymns by Eliza R. Snow—such as "O My Father," "Behold the Great Redeemer Die," and "How Great the Wisdom and the Love"—evoke powerful religious imagery. In her hymns and in her hundreds of other poems, Snow captured nineteenth-century Mormonism, where revelation and history intersected and Latter-day Saints labored for the meeting of heaven and earth they named Zion. Snow's poems convey many sublime truths about the human condition.
As Zion's honored spokeswoman, no public event in the Mormon community from the 1840s to the 1880s was complete without a contribution from her. "Through [Snow's poems] the names of many of the actors in the drama of Mormonism, will be handed down to posterity," wrote Emmeline B. Wells.
Intelligent, well-read, and articulate, Snow also had an understanding of the scriptures. Through her position in the inner circles of church leadership, her poetry, and her gifts as a spokeswoman, she became one of the most influential and best-known women in Mormon history.
As a result, this collection is as much biographical, historical, and theological as literary.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive and long overdue By Bill McGee This book is an amazing work of scholarship combined with a clear love for the subject. Derr and Davidson have spent years collecting, reviewing, editing, and collating all of the poetry of Eliza R. Snow, one of the most influential women in the early LDS faith. These poems give valuable insights into the issues and concerns of the early Mormon pioneers, especially from the perspective of being an LDS woman. Eliza R. Snow was a prolific poet, and her works range from grand and profound to pedestrian, but all provide a snapshot into the thoughts of this remarkable woman and the lives of the people she lived and corresponded with. Like Wilford Woodruff, Eliza R. Snow was present at most of the pivotal events of the early LDS church, and she regularly recorded her thoughts and impressions in poetry in addition to diaries, sermons, and correspondence. Introductions to each poem add additional historical insight that make this book excellent for both the casual reader, readers interested in women's lives and issues in the 19th century, and scholars, especially those interested in examining first-hand experiences of 19th century LDS women. A full biography of this amazing woman is long overdue, and this work is an important first step in that direction.

By Craig Matteson What I enjoy most about this book is watching her development as a poet. She clearly matures and increases in ability and power over the decades. Her poetry, however, is not the kind of personal introspective poetry our age prefers. Hers, for the most part, is a public poetry that is meant to instruct, inspire, and document events. Of course, as Latter-day Saints, some of her verses ring in our minds and hearts as familiar hymns. But there is much here that we don't generally know (there are 500 plus poems here, folks!) and almost of all of it is worth reading carefully and considering. Hers is a voice worth hearing and remembering.

She had a very strong will and a religious convection beyond measure. She was dedicated to a life serving God and the man who died introducing her to Him.
