"Be not afraid" Lupus brought Kristina to the brink of death—not once, but repeatedly. But in the darkest moments, Jesus was there. Not just figuratively, but literally, in body and voice. “Do not be afraid. Trust me. I will take care of my daughter.” Here is a message of hope for everyone. Whatever you’re dealing with, you can know that God will take care of you. "I Knew His Voice", told from Kristina's father's viewpoint is a true story of a desperate illness, faith and healing both physical and spiritual that will give you hope and strength knowing Jesus Christ is with you in all moments and will never leave you alone. The story is often taken straight from Ed's journal entries throughout those days.

The Next Book to Read to Solidify your Christian Faith By Lionbacker Ed Corbett is one of my dearest spiritual brothers in Pittsburgh Men's Emmaus, Catholic Men's Fellowship and a number of other ministries and groups, including both being members of our parish. I have known portions of the walk that Ed and Connie have had with Kristina's medical issues, but I suspected that this book would fill in many details that I didn't know and amplify some of the beautiful spiritual aspects I already knew. The first-person expose that Ed gives of the daily challenges posed upon Kristina and those who love her, takes you into their hearts, minds and lives while they build a fortress of faith with Christ, to trust Him in His will, to bring to the afflicted and her family, what they most humbly desire, for Kristina to be healed. I came home, this past Sunday, from Mass, found this book delivered to my doorstep, and read it cover to cover by day's end. While the story involves so many family, friends and church leaders that I know well, my biggest focus was in Ed's quest to build a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and trust Him with all his heart. I am still on this journey, and Ed's description of the challenges of putting your entire trust in Him is one that I still know very well."I Knew His Voice" is a book for all. It is a story of challenges, of faith, and of hope. It is a beautifully written book and one that puts another cornerstone into your faith.

By Karuizawa This book will be a great encouragement to people going through tough times, especially those who are struggling with the question of whether God can be fully trusted. I found myself touched by reading of the Corbett family’s authentic faith in God and love for each other; their story will give hope. Ed Corbett writes with great transparency about his own honest struggles with his faith. This will be a great help to others who are battling the same doubts or uncertainties. The author is very careful to methodically recount each incident, including precise medical details, and when he begins to share about unexpected spiritual experiences, these are written in the same matter-of-fact tone. For me, some of the most meaningful incidents he records are those which tell of the profound effect his daughter Kristina’s story had on others. This is a young lady who is unselfishly living her life with others in mind, including allowing her private story to be told so that others can be encouraged. This book can be enjoyed meaningfully by people of many different faith traditions – or those who are not sure if they have any faith at all. The themes are universal: family love through tough times, listening for God’s voice in the storm, and finding one’s way emotionally and spiritually in the battlefield of a child’s illness.

You have a story to tell. You have a product, service, idea, or vision to sell---at home, at school, at church, or at work. Your communication is the most powerful tool you possess---but do you know how to use it?

How we choose to communicate determines the difference between success and failure---in all of our endeavors. "Bridge Builders" gives you the strategic tools you need to connect to the hearts and minds of your audiences and achieve the objectives that are important to you.

"Bridge Builders" is a compelling fable of self-discovery about Daniel Reed’s journey from ordinary communicator to inspirational Bridge Builder. It’s about the power of crafting messages through the eyes of our audience. It’s about learning to craft our message differently as others’ needs become the impetus behind our message.

No matter who you are or what you do, incorporating key Bridge Builder principles and best practices will revitalize your vision for the way you connect with people: Who is my audience? What do they care about? What obstacles will they present and why? How can I invite input?

How you choose to communicate your message and connect with your target audience will make the difference between success and failure.

When you make a decision to communicate your message like a Bridge Builder, you will achieve more of what you want. You’ll be a Superb Communicator who is able to persuade audiences:

To listen. To engage. To connect. To buy your products. To join your causes. To approve your initiatives. To fund your ideas. To believe in your vision. To let you lead.

The premise of this book is simple: You already know how to be a Bridge Builder---although you may not realize it. Like most people, you’ve probably forgotten. But you’ve successfully built bridges before. Intention, not perfection, helped you achieve what you wanted. And intention, not perfection, will help you achieve what you want in the future. When you operate from the principles illustrated in the story and in the Approach that follows it, the results you achieve will amaze you.

Getting the Most from the Story

Stories are often used to communicate important principles. Why? Because we all relate to life through stories. We see aspects of ourselves in the characters, and we hope to gain new insights about business and life from the way they react and the things they learn in the story.

The parable in this book is about a man named Daniel who, like us, has a problem (how to communicate effectively with others) but doesn’t recognize the source of his problem or how to solve it. Daniel needs to become a Bridge Builder in order to get what he truly wants, but he struggles to accept the solution to his problem because of past failure, preconceptions, and misunderstandings. He exemplifies the individuals I encounter every day in one-to-one coaching and the corporate consulting process.

The characters in this story represent composites of real business professionals I’ve worked with, not anyone in particular. However, early feedback from readers that represent varied industries and cultures tells me that the characters and themes in the story will resonate with most readers in more ways than one.

This story applies to business communication, but it also applies to communication at home, at school, at church, and in any organizational setting. Because the story deals with communication and leadership principles, anyone will benefit from reading it, whether or not they work in the corporate world.

Organizations, large or small, will also reap the profits of intentionally nurturing a culture of Bridge Builder Communication and Bridge Builder Leadership―and so will those inside those organizations, whether they’re executives, scientists, engineers, sales reps, entrepreneurs, educators, pastors or Creatives. That has been my experience.

I suggest that you first read and reflect on the story. Then take the time to ask questions that are naturally suggested in the narrative.

The characters are common and predictably described and I immediately started the book out sceptical. However, it was soon into the reading where I found myself asking important questions with how I conduct myself professionally. I began to find the disconnect between myself and colleagues and realized how much of my personal baggage is what continues to nurture obstacles that keep me from meeting personal and professional goals. The author kept firing simple, yet thought provoking concepts that are worth the time spent for self-evaluation or brainstorming with a group. I would highly recommend that this book be incorporated into team-building activities, leadership training as well as professional growth development.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Valuable Resource! By E. Varela Using an intriguing storytelling method, Author Maria Keckler coaches her readers to become SUPERB (acronym for Maria's communication principles) communicators and true Bridge Builders. In the first section, Maria uses the illustration of Daniel Reed, a new CEO faced with challenges that enable him to develop his communication skills and relationships. Each chapter concludes with guiding questions to learn from Daniel's failures and successes in business. The second section of the book gives clear and straightforward instruction on how to become a true bridge builder, highlighting principles for success.Author Maria does not just coach people on how to become bridge builders. This book has emerged from Maria's own effective bridge building lifestyle. Having worked with her in the past, I have observed her successful bridge building. She is truly a SUPERB communicator.I recommend Bridge Builders as an excellent resource for anyone who works with groups-administrators, pastors, secretaries, and even camp counselors. Bridge Builders can also be used in the college or high school classroom. The chapters' questions allow for in-depth discussion. It is also a valuable resource for anyone who desires to improve and strengthen their relationships with others, specifically in the business arena. I highly recommend this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Flips the script on the traditional "self help" or "leadership" book...a fantastic approach and a fun read. By Edward H. This is not your ordinary "self-help" or "personal growth" book. Rather this is a unique book that blends a masterfully told parable with time-honored truths and sage advice. I have to say, I was impressed because of the format as much as the content (well, ok, truth be told, the content trumped the format). Starting off in story-form, the first 2/3rds of the book is a fast and fun read...the type of story that hits home and teaches you without preaching self-help or business tips at you. Then in the final 1/3, the book goes over the principles taught in story form in greater depth. As for the content, without giving too much away, the idea of being a "bridge builder" is often overlooked in todays "Lone Ranger" world. It is practical, and timely advice. In a culture all too focused on self, this book will help you realize that your best self might be the person that helps others and...wait for it...builds bridges! There are only a handful of individuals I know that embody this approach...hopefully after reading this book, there will be more. Every organization needs bridge builders, and they are some of the most valuable people. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You WILL BE a better leader after reading it.

Legend has it that Pancho Villa’s grave was robbed—and his head stolen—in 1926. A gringo is credited with the theft, but Gus Corral’s great-grandfather was there too. As often happens to Chicanos, his role was given short shrift. But the Corral family has taken care of the skull for as long as Gus can remember. It’s a jolt when “Panchito” is stolen from his sister’s house. It’s the only connection to the old-timers of the family, so Gus knows he will have to get to the bottom of the disappearance, even if it means tangling with thieves and thugs. A variety of characters—writers, attorneys, Vietnam vets, cops, soldiers—populate these stories in which situations frequently aren’t what they seem. An old man knows more about the disappearance of a neighbor than he lets on. A barber is involved in something that brings a ski-mask wearing, gun-toting hoodlum into his shop. And a cop accused of using excessive force hasn’t told his family the whole truth. Many stories in this gripping collection feature Mexican Americans struggling with their circumstances as an ethnic minority in the United States. Others cover historical events, from the Mexican Revolution to an encounter with Jack Kerouac. All spotlight Ramos’ artistry and dexterity as he shifts from noir to historical and even ficción rápida, or flash fiction. Spanning his acclaimed writing career, this volume includes Ramos’ first story published in 1986, “White Devils and Cockroaches,” which features an attorney who served as the prototype for Luis Móntez, the protagonist in five of his award-winning novels.

And Manuel Ramos frequently comes up with some surprising endings for his tales. Some of his short stories can be labeled “Chicano noir.” They get dark and gritty as they move along through the struggles and ragged edges of Mexican-American life in the United States. Meanwhile, other stories in the collection explore different themes, such as the thoughts of a young Mexican-American soldier as he lays dying in Vietnam, and what happens when a Mexican-American shoeshine boy gets pulled into a barroom fight and is defended by the writer Jack Kerouac. In this collection, Ramos's stories are entertaining and easily accessible at a universal level. And he writes with a smooth clarity that looks simple on the page, yet is very difficult for most authors to achieve.(My thanks to Arté Público Press for providing a review copy.)

One story might pack a punch, the next might move your heart. This collection is a Manuel Ramos master class in effortless, engaging prose—no pretensions, all story. The scenes are frequently downbeat—but not all. The characters hang or thrive on the fringes and in the shadows—but not all. Most are set in Denver—but not all. L.A. shows up and El Paso, too. Most of these stories move in a world of green chile and sausage sandwiches, bar tops and back alleys, Tecates and Coronas.A few examples:In “No Hablo Inglés,” disbarred lawyer Manolo is hungover in a town he hates “but that wasn’t El Paso’s fault. I hated myself and that meant I hated wherever I woke up.” Manolo’s world is about to go south. In “White Devils and Cockroaches,” González is “damn good legal aid lawyer” but finds himself representing “crazies, weirdos, misfits, losers and plain folks who got taken.” His latest client works as a dishwasher at the White Spot. González, in short, is not the slick wolf of Wall Street. He’s the scraggly coyote of Capitol Hill—and he’s pretty damn close to his breaking point.“When the Air Conditioner Quit” (funniest short story title ever?) starts with a gunshot but that isn’t the only violence in this taut seven-page story of street rules, deception and nasty surprises. There are 23 three stories in four sections—Basic Black, Outlaws, Lovers and Chicanismo. One of the 23 is a poem (“The Smell of Onions”) but It starts with a line that is pure short story: “Shorty stumbled from the Rainbow Inn/Jenny would give him hell again.” That is a great opening couplet with a wonderful rhyme: and how can you not read more?I particularly enjoyed Ramos’ first-person stories, like the whole chunk (Chapter 5) from “Desperado—A Mile High Noir” that is a stand-alone tale in the title story here, “The Skull of Pancho Villa.” In first-person mode, Ramos goes into ultra-glide mode with his prose, so smooth and unassuming and laid-back. “You’ve heard the story, maybe read something about it in the newspaper or a magazine. How Pancho Villa’s grave was robbed in 1926 and his head taken.” This one is rife with the wry humor of Gus Corral, who may or may not be telling the truth. Many of the stories contain a few delectable noir touches, like this one from "If We Had Been Dancing:"“She licked the wet edge of her glass with a tiny pink tongue and did a move with her shoulders that could have been a dance step, if we had been on the dance floor, if we had been dancing.”Ramos makes it look easy. There’s no way to wrap these stories in one box with a neat bow, and that will keep you turning the pages. Some feature writers and lawyers (particularly in the “Bad Haircut Day,” a wonderful tale of street ethics) from mainstream society and several are creative, brisk sketches that show a poet’s heart. But when Gus Corral turns to the audience for a comment in “The Skull of Pancho Villa,” he sums up the feeling I get from many of the stories in this anthology, which gathers gems from nearly 20 years of Ramos’ works.“Okay,” says Corral, “right about now you’re thinking, call the cops, Gus. Don’t be a pendejo. Let the law handle it. But see, you don’t live in my world, man. Where I come from, the cops aren’t your first line of defense. You didn’t grow up constantly squaring off against cabrones like Jessie. You never had to accept that every lousy week another clown would challenge your manhood and you would have to beat or be beaten.”True fact—I don’t live in these worlds. But Ramos is our tour guide. And for that we can all be thankful. With extra hot green chile on top.

Revolutionaries, Jack Kerouac, and Killers By Mona AlvaradoFrazier Some unusual characters (Jack Kerouac, vets, cops, soldiers, tagger) show up in Manuel Ramos most interesting short story collection, including a mystery about the theft and subsequent whereabouts of Pancho Villa's head.I've enjoyed Ramos' four fiction and mystery/noir novels, so I was eager to read this collection. From the legend of La Llorona, and the robbery of Pancho Villa's grave in 1926 to the contemporary stories of a cop, burned-out attorney, a screenwriter, and gentrified neighborhoods, these stories capture the history, culture and language of the Chicano/Mexican in the U.S., specifically set in Denver, Colorado. The stories range from 'flash fiction,' to longer pieces and short or not, they all pack a scene with authenticity and interest.A copy of this collection was sent to me for an honest review by Arte Público Press.

Finalist for the 2016 PEN Literary Award for TranslationIn this courageous, inventive, and intelligent novel, Viola di Grado tells the story of a suicide and what follows. She has given voice to an astonishing vision of life after life, portraying the awful longing and sense of loss that plague the dead, together with the solitude provoked by the impossibility of communicating. The afterlife itself is seen as a dark, seething place where one is preyed upon by the cruel and unrelenting elements. Hollow Heart will frighten as it provokes, enlighten as it causes concern. If ever there were a novel that follows Kafka’s prescription for a book to be a frozen axe for the sea within us, it is Hollow Heart.

Review “A danse macabre for millennials.” — Los Angeles Review of Books   “[. . .] the writing is pristine. Each sentence lures us further into the flies and blood-filled spirals of Di Grado’s dreamworld and, most importantly, we are willing to follow her.” — The Independent (UK)"Di Grado plays an inventive, self-aware game with language that saturates her macabre landscapes, transforming them into darkly comical expositions of death and unhappiness." — Music & Literature Magazine   “Themes from the first novel […] are reprised and developed here in an extraordinary feat of linguistic gymnastics expertly captured in Anthony Shugaar’s translation.” — Times Literary Supplement Blog   “Hollow Heart has the authentic ring of autobiography. Pure imagination is incapable of inventing something this assured, this intense and vivid [. . .] A writer this powerful is scary.” — Sarah Wu, Intense Sensations   “Hollow Heart [. . .] is just as strongly written as its predecessor, taking the black, manic tone of the earlier book and pushing it into a new territory – beyond the grave.” — Tony’s Reading List   “In alternately clinical and whimsical language, with fresh metaphors […], di Grado examines the secret sadness passed down through families.” — We Love This Book

About the Author Viola Di Grado was born in Catania, Italy. She now lives and studies in London. Her first novel, 70% Acrylic 30% Wool, was the winner of the 2011 Campiello First Novel Award and a finalist for Italy's most prestigious literary prize, The Strega.

She slits her wrists in the same bathtub where her mother gave birth to her. As the story opens she has already died, and although her physical body is dead, she's back among the living, unwilling to say goodbye to her former life. She attends her own funeral, returns to work at the stationary store as scheduled, sees her old boyfriend has found someone new, and visits her home and old room where she cries and cries. In dark, morbid, yet oftentimes humorous prose, Dorotea shares her unhappy story. We learn of her painful childhood, the father she never knew, her emotionally vacant mother, her struggle with depression and the boyfriend who thought so very little of her that he broke up with her via text message. Alternating between her life before and after suicide, Dorotea observes the people she left behind and also chronicles the morbid details of what is happening to her physical body. She also takes time to hook up with other spirits who are still looking to have some fun. This is an incredibly short book, just 174 pages, but it's definitely a story that sticks with you. The writing and translation is very good, and made me wonder just how the author came up with such a twisted story. There's nothing happy about this story -- just stare at that cover art for a moment. Although this book did not leave me with a warm, fuzzy feeling about the after life, I'm happy I gave this book a try, it was a good and needed change from what I've been reading recently. Readers looking for something different and edgy might want to read it and see what I mean.

The first collection in twenty years of essays on Robinson Jeffers, one of the great American poets of the twentieth century, this work signals the sea change in Jeffers scholarship, as well as the increasing breadth and depth of criticism of the literature of the American West. The essays assembled here highlight issues and theories critical to Jeffers studies, among them the advance of ecocriticism, the reimagining of regionalism as place studies, the continuing development of cultural studies and the new historicism, the increasingly poignant vector of science and literature, the new formalism, particularly as it pertains to narrative verse, and the glaring omission of feminist analysis in Jeffers scholarship. Jeffers has always appealed to a wider audience than many twentieth-century poets, and this book will speak to that general readership as well as to scholars and students.

That makes about as much sense as complaining that a book about dolphin embryology is "too scientific." It's a book for academics, folks. That said, UNM is to be commended for putting the first collection of Jeffers essays on the market in decades. The essays represent many of the best Jeffers scholars writing today. The topics range from broad (Jeffers and the idea of consciousness, the influence of Jeffers' Medea on translation theory, point of view and authorial voice in Jeffers' short poems) to tightly focused (an 'ecofeminist' reading of "Roan Stallion," a biographical essay on a hike Jeffers took on the San Bernardino mountains that includes the first publication of a last poem, the examination of the reputation of Jeffers in, of all places, Czechoslovakia). There are a couple I wouldn't have picked, but so what; it's not my book. The narrow essays may only appeal to a small contingent of dedicated Jeffers specialists, but the broad ones have implications for anyone reading Jeffers seriously. All in all, a well-edited specialist book, certainly not misrepresented as anything else.

The Hawk may hover high over granite boulders but literary critics stay way too close to the ground By green chili reader How anyone can make an intensely powerful poet like Robinson Jeffers seem hum-drum is beyond me, but these various scholars really seem to excell at it. Perhaps a thin number of literary critics who are enamored of jargon will like these miscellaneous jabs, but Jeffers fans are advised to stick to the hermit of Tor House and not bother with these deep-thinking analysts. About the only thing the average reader will find interesting is the curious story of how Jeffers became the most respected American poet in Cold War-era Czechoslovakia, As for the rest, UN Press rolls snake-eyes again.

I found this while I was searching for something to read. I decided to get this and found that it’s very informative and encouraging. The contents were wrote in a way that it’s understandable for those who are beginners in this business. And with that being said, I will surely recommend this one to my cousin, and maybe I could also use this when I decide to be an agent in the future.

Hebrew Classics: A Journey Through Israel's Timeless Fiction and Poetry (Israel: Society, Culture, and History), by Dvir Abramovich

Review "In Hebrew Classics: A Journey Through Israel's Timeless Fiction and Poetry, Dvir Abramovich offers us an intimate and delightful tour through the pastures of Hebrew literature. A refreshing meeting awaits us with writers of various generations who had grown up in separate landscapes and some in the midst of diverse languages. . . . One of the unique characteristics of the book is the choice of literary works that it deals with, free of the bonds of genre definitions. We are offered 'delectable meals' that include interpretive studies of poems and stories of various kinds. The common denominator for this selection is the presentation of texts as junctions of flavour and passion within the rich and fascinating history of modern Hebrew literature. This provides the reader with the ability to experience a bird's eye view of these creative works. This book is a tribute to Hebrew literature, written with love and with the wish to share this love. This is obvious both from the detailed and sensitive studies, and from the commendable descriptive, festive and elegant language." Yigal Schwartz, Professor of Hebrew Literature and Head of Heksherim: The Research Center for Jewish and Israel Culture, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev"Abramovich has done a scrupulous job in scrutinizing these key texts of contemporary Hebrew fiction. The care with which he sets them in their historical and cultural contexts should be instructive for all readers interested in Israel and its predicaments." Robert Alter, Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature"The next best thing to reading modern Hebrew literature in the original is getting to know it through the eyes of a lover who is willing to share his passion. In Hebrew Classics: A Journey Through Israel's Timeless Fiction and Poetry, Dvir Abramovich invites us to get to know its major figures and his introductions to their work make us eager to know them better. A true scholar can do no better." --Ruth Wisse, Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature

About the Author Dvir Abramovich (PhD University of Melbourne) is director of the University of Melbourne's Centre for Jewish History and Culture and a senior lecturer in Hebrew and Jewish Studies. He was editor of the Australian Journal of Jewish Studies for eight years and president of the Australian Association of Jewish Studies from 2006 to 2010. Hebrew Classics: A Journey Through Israel's Timeless Fiction and Poetry By Batsheva Levy Excellent and necessary book for all lovers of literature: for Jews and non-Jews alike. A very readable book which introduces everyone to some of the great Hebrew writers and will make you want to explore the original sources. A very good outline of the personalities and lives of the writers in their historical contexts.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I would recommend this book to every medical student and resident in ... By Tara Choobineh Transition 2 Practice is a practical, concise read, in the spirit of Fisher and Ury’s book Negotiating To Win, but geared especially towards physicians and those soon to be. Physicians, in spite of having the privilege (and responsibility) of innumerable years of education, are nearly universally woefully trained in concepts of business. This book lays the foundation for a more educated perspective on the non-medical aspects of the practice of medicine. The author, who boasts one of the largest group practices in the fourth largest city in the United States, imparts his invaluable wisdom and knowledge, in a most palatable, to-the-point format, regarding the business of medicine. This book is applicable to physicians in any stage of practice, with a recurring theme of the importance of negotiation skills. The author emphasizes the necessity of self-reflection, the fact (which is perspective-shifting for most people) that the only winning situation is when both parties win, and perhaps of utmost importance, that time is the quintessential currency. This book also advises concretely on intuition, interviewing, and specific subpopulations, such as gender and minority issues and physicians in various stages of their careers. I would recommend this book to every medical student and resident in particular, but also any physician without a business degree or extensive reading in the subject. After a minimum quarter century of education, physicians deserve appropriate compensation for the blood, sweat, and tears (quite literally) invested in their careers, and this book helps to achieve that.
