Glyn literally invented many of the romantic conventions we see in books today. Her sense of humor and sharp critical eye enliven what might otherwise be rather standard love stories. But here, most of what is truly extraordinary about Glyn has been edited out. The resut is a standard, cut-to-the-chase love story that could have been written by almost anyone. If you are interested in writing your own romance novel, this might be interesting as a study in how to move the plot along, but personally, I read in order to read good writing. And, incidentally, the work in question was not listed as being a sharply edited version. So be careful -- one can only conclude that the reader is supposed to know magically that the Barbara Cartland reissues have been chopped to pieces.

Kennedy This romance is set in pre-revolutionary Russia, and does a nice job of creating the backdrop for the lives of the nobility here. However, the main characters alternate between somewhat annoying, and somewhat overbearing and self-absorbed. The story itself tries hard, but the characterization drags it into mediocrity.

I really enjoyed the first half of it when Tamara meets Gritzko at the Sphinx and then later again in Russia. Gritzko is an exotic--possibly psychotic--character and it was entertaining to watch them become better acquainted and, of course, fall for each other. Toward the latter part of the book, though, I thought the story got a little too turned in on itself to be entertaining. We know where their relationship is headed, of course, but the author tried to sustain the suspense of it for longer than the conflict between them could carry. After a while, the hero's behavior especially just seemed ridiculous, and entirely contrived to stretch out the plot. Still an entertaining read, though, and I look forward to exploring more of Elinor Glyn's titles on Kindle.

The average life of less than average individuals. The Nature of Pathetic explores the universe of an undisclosed big city and follows the terribly hilarious misadventures of several delightfully unlucky characters. Ultimately, the question to ask is what is our place in this universe? The answer is typically to change the world for the better or reshape the planet in our image. But even the most ambitious can seem silent in the overall, grand scheme. No matter how important a conflict may seem there is always a large population of people who do not care. And waiting on others to fix the problems is the only way to assure that nothing productive will ever happen. The Nature of Pathetic is the debut fiction work of IDK the Emcee. His beatnik inspired style gives the work a gritty, visceral tone. Claw your way through the quick read for a good laugh, deep meaning, or just to read something really weird.

Wonderful for a train or bus ride somewhere to take you away. I loved this book and will read it again soon. This story is a little bit dark but the humor carries it onward to the end where all is revealed. This is recommended reading.

Review: The Necromancer Candle by Randy McCharles By Elise Abram Randy McCharles, author of "The Necromancer Candle" (Edge Publishing) is a master storyteller in this collection of three novellas. Each of the novellas tells a compelling story with well-rounded characters. In the first story, “The Necromancer Candle”, teenage Cassidy is reeling having just lost her mother in a break-in. Cassidy is dying from brain cancer and struggles coping with her mother dying before her. She must battle Child and Family Services and the return of her estranged father. If that wasn’t enough, she sees visions of a dishevelled man she’s not sure is real, or a product of her cancer addled brain. Her life is thrown into further upheaval when she learns her family has been tasked since medieval times with protecting the necromancer candle. In “Full House”, unemployed Jonas spends his time painting house and playing cards with his neighbours. When a neighbour is murdered and the head of the family tasks him with finding the murderer, Jonas is swept into an age old quest for the holy grail with ties to King Arthur and Merlin. In “Merlin’s Silver”, Joan buys a silver tea set on a whim at auction. Amidst requests by shadowy figures to purchase the tea set from her, Joan contends with a wave of deathly bad luck. Though Joan is in this adventure with her husband, best friend, and a peculiar stranger, she alone must decide what to do with the tea set.I read "The Necromancer Candle" inside of a week. I found the stories gripping and the characters interesting but marred by the deus ex machina method of plot resolution. “The Necromancer Candle” has wisps of the supernatural woven throughout, but the true supernatural aspect of the candle is not revealed until the climax and denouement. There is nothing paranormal about “Full House” (with the exception of a false reporting of a pentagram in a neighbour’s basement) until the climax. By contrast, “Merlin’s Silver” is rife with references to black magic and Merlin, but the magic doesn’t manifest until the climax. Though I was drawn in by each of the stories (with the exception of “Merlin’s Sliver” which seemed more farcical than not), I was let down by the climax. In "The Necromancer Candle", McCharles has great potential, but it falls flat. Perhaps this is due to the choice of narrative point of view. In each case, McCharles chooses the viewpoint of an outsider, totally uninitiated into the world of the supernatural. Had the first story been narrated by Cassidy’s father instead of Cassidy herself, for example, the same story might have had a more satisfying climax, as the reader would be in on the magic from the start. One last note: I received a free copy of "The Necromancer Candle" by Randy McCharles in exchange for this review. My hope for this novel is that Edge plans to edit further before publishing to eliminate many of the typographical errors within.

The book begins with a sinister scene from the distant past, then fast forward to modern day life. There is much drama with a murder and danger lurks everywhere. The daughter of the murdered mother is clueless. Eventually, they realize it all revolves around an old candle that was passed down through her fathers family. By this time he does not know why he is guardian of the candle. Why this dark character chooses to steal the candle at this point of time after all these years is a bit murky. Perhaps it would satisfy a Young Adult reader but not for an adult reader. I have yet to read the additional books that other reviewers say are an improvement to his ability.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic tales of fantasy By I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*This collection of short stories were paired together very well. They all offered intrigue, suspense, fantasy, and the unknown in vast amounts. Each of the stories were well written and gave you that exceptionally eerie sense of creepiness when reading them. They definitely kept you clinging to the pages and hanging on every word. I especially liked the sense of not knowing who the “bad” guys were in the stories “Full House” and “Merlin’s Silver.” You aren’t sure what is happening or who to believe. I think my favorite story, although I really liked them all, was “Full House.” I loved the odd sister-in-law and the creepy neighbors. I definitely didn’t guess how that was going to turn out before it was concluded. Randy McCharles was able to put some little twist in each of the stories the stories that I hadn’t expected. I give this compilation 5 books.

Denver Snuffer posted an essay entitled “Plural Marriage” on March 22, 2015. It is apparently a transcription of a recent talk he had given and provides his followers with his views on Joseph Smith and plural marriage. Snuffer’s basic conclusion is that the Prophet did not practice polygamy. He alleges that the historical evidences that support Joseph’s participation should instead be attributed to John C. Bennett’s activities in Nauvoo in 1840–1842 or blamed on Brigham Young’s behaviors and teachings after the martyrdom. This article provides references to dozens of documents that counter this conclusion and shows plainly that Snuffer is in error. On page 28 of the transcript, Snuffer shifts away from the subject of plural marriage, touching on several themes he has written on before. Part 2 of this response will specifically address those twenty pages of Denver Snuffer’s claims.

HOW USELESS TO KEEP MY HEART PURE AND WASH MY HANDS IN INNOCENCE WHEN I AM ATTACKED DAY AFTER DAY, AND MOCKED EVERY MORNING.But if we should think like that, we would abandon the faith of our Fathers.Yes, though we are attacked by liberal activists from without and by apostasy from within, the trueChurch--that is, the body of those who remain faithful to Church tradition--weeps, and she prays, because she knows the fate of those who oppose God.Our enemies might fear love, and they can push love away, but they can't kill it. And so the battle against them cannot be fought with politics; it requires a profound personal struggle against the immorality of popular culture. The battle must be fought with love for God through pure and chaste lifestyles lived from the depths of our hearts in every moment. With compassion and clarity, Raymond Lloyd Richmond, Ph.D. explains the psychological and spiritual aspects of a growing battle with evil that looms in front of every Christian today.CONTENTSPrefacePart One: The Faith Real Love | The Reason for Doctrine | Faith | Belief | Tradition | Judgment | Heresy | Sexuality and LovePart Two: Refuge Baptism | Chastity | The Divine Liturgy | Confession | Spiritual FruitsPart Three: Questions and Answers The True Church | The "Church" | The Dead | A Spiritual Life | Evil | Ruthless | The Call to be Holy | Sports | Entertainment | Contemptus Mundi | Living Righteously | Triumph and Revenge | Temptation | Conscience | Fire and Brimstone | Honor | The Vanity of Protest | Terrorism | Social Justice | Peace | Quietism? | Predestination | End TimesAppendix I: IdentityThe Problem | Encounter and Trauma | Fragmentation | Identity and Sexuality | LonelinessAppendix II: Death -- and the Seduction of DespairIntroduction | Repetition | The Beginning | Repetition Revisited | RebirthAppendix III: How to PrayAsking for Guidance | Praying Constantly | Feelings in Prayer | Distractions During Prayer | When You Don't Receive Answers to Your Prayers | Vocal Prayer and Mental Prayer | WarningsAppendix IV: TerrorThe Incubus and Succubus | Someone's PreyNotesIndex

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Shining Light By David S As with all Richmond’s books, this one is exceptionally well-written and beautifully designed. I kept looking around, and the truth opened up like page after page of brilliant insights. After reading this book, I have the same urge as Saint Rose of Lima or Saint Francis Xavier to wake people from their complacency. Richmond gets it right. There’s something about his mix of psychology and theology that’s awesome. Given his wealth of knowledge and insight, there’s no arrogance in his writing. He explains complicated issues with clear simplicity and I didn’t come away feeling lectured. You just see things you never saw before. You just want to wake up and recognize the cultural illusions that bring down evil upon us! And then fight it all with a dedication to purity. Even if your parish doesn’t talk about it, this book shows us that anyone who desires it can become a saint and make a real contribution to the battle against our own doom. It may not seem like much to the world, but in the spiritual realm it’s a brilliant shining light.

The mystery of on-line dating added more the “non-so human character”. Great story line with fantastic character. Quite entertaining!

Westering (After a Fashion), by Ian Lauder

About the Author My writing endeavors, in independent but related volumes, constitute a comic Odyssey – a Pilgrim’s Progress, 20th/21st Centuries style. The central hero, an artist documenting his life and age, although himself an occasional violator of all the Commandments, never hesitates to wade into any situation should the safety, dignity, or happiness of an animal, child, or innocent be involved. Single, poor, and optimistic, in a world still governed by Mammon, Mars, and Priapus, his story is ribald, noble, and comic. Young in spirit and incapable of selling out as an artist or giving up on his quest, he pays the inevitable price, and reaps the sweet rewards, of such a stand.

By Michael Hicks [Note: I received an advanced copy of this title for review.]The Z Chronicles is the latest in Samuel Peralta’s ever-growing series of The Future Chronicles anthologies. While I’ve only read a couple of the previous collections, this zombie-themed antho is far and away my favorite of the bunch and represents one the strongest over-all anthologies that I’ve ever read. There is a mighty fine assemblage of authors here, and a number of superb stories that, on their own, more than make the price of entry completely worthwhile. And, as with any good anthology, this has given me a nice starting point to delve deeper into the works of authors that are new to me. In fact, after reading several of the stories included here, I immediately hopped onto Amazon and bought a couple titles from writers like Ann Christy and Deirdre Gould. Following here, then, are a few thoughts on my favorites – consider this a LIGHT SPOILER WARNING and feel free to skip down to the bottom if you want to be completely blind going in.Christy’s story, VINDICA, kicks of The Z Chronicles in grand style with a story of insurrection in an underground habitat built for the rich. It’s a strong stand-along story, but also provides a great taste of the author’s Between series.KAMIKA-Z by Christopher Boore, and Will Swardstron’s Z BALL are also very strong efforts, with the former featuring cyborg zombies unleashed upon the US during a war with China. This one is told across three viewpoints of a single family struggling to survive. It’s dark, but the characters are richly developed and their own unique voices are allowed to shine across each chapter. My only complaint is that I really wanted to see more of these cyborg zombie things! It’s such a cool concept, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Boore expands on it in a larger work soon.Z BALL casts the zombie uprising through the bright lights of American sports. This one is a wonderful outside-of-the-box approach to the zombie apocalypse and the way society responds and adapts to changing circumstances. And, just for good measure, it’s all wrapped up in a nice shell of conspiracy and paranoia.Hugh Howey and David Adams play around a bit in Howey’s own I, Zombie world. GLORIA is a story of a woman coming to grips with her own zombiefication, while Adams presents a similar story of a transgender individual who has been zombified. Both of these showcase a great bit of internal character development as they grapple with their post-death existence that finds their healthy mental states locked inside bodies they can no longer control thanks to the ravages of the plague.Peter Cawdron’s FREE FALL is another excellent piece that begins with a bit of a sci-fi bent as an astronaut returns to a decimated Earth. The opening bit of this story is a terrific slow-burn as the spaceman attempts to establish contact with Houston Ground Control only to slowly realize things are not quite right. It slowly morphs into a more traditional zombie-survival story, one that is really well done. Fans of the comics Y: The Last Man and The Walking Dead should find quite a lot to appreciate here.CURING KHANG YEO finished off the anthology with a stunningly rich character piece that finds the title character cured after several years as a zombie. Reclaimed by a very different world than the one he left, Yeo discovers that there are worse things than being a zombie – namely, living with yourself in the wake of all that you’ve done and those you’ve killed. His sense of guilt is supremely palpable, with the struggle between his own desires and the wishes of his medical saviors (if you can really call them that) is effectively striking. Author Deirdre Gould scores a huge, huge win with this story and I loved it so much that I immediately grabbed a copy of the first installment in her After The Cure series. While YEO is set in that same series, it is certainly effective as a stand-alone, but I suspect readers discovering Gould for the first time will find it difficult to ignore her novel-length works after reading this one. I, for one, absolutely need to know more about the world she’s constructed and the psychological and societal aftermath of this cure.As with any anthology, there were a couple stories that didn’t strike a strong chord with me, but those that did, particularly those outlined above, were just incredibly top-notch efforts. Overall, this is a wickedly strong anthology and zombie fans should be devouring this one ASAP. If you’re going through withdrawal’s of AMC’s The Walking Dead, or looking for something to fill the gap left by Jonathan Maberry’s ROT & RUIN series, this fix is now in. Highly recommended!

A New and Original Take by Some of Today's Freshest Sci-Fi Authors By David Fowler The Z Chronicles brings together some of today's most talented, self-published Sci-Fi authors, offering up their (short) take on the zombie genre. With so many different zombie stories out there today, the challenge of bringing something new and fresh may seem daunting. These authors have risen to the challenge. The short story format, by its very nature, causes authors to have to get to the point quickly and concisely. That lends itself to some very good storytelling. Naturally, depending on your personal preference, some stories will appeal to you more than others. However, for me, these really stood out."Vindica" by Ann Christy really stuck a chord. I loved the characters and the premise. Without giving too much away, revenge is sweet."Six Days" by Theresa Kay reaches into every parent's heart and asks what we'd be willing to do as a parent in the midst of a crisis with a countdown."The Fall of the Percedus" As usual, Jennifer Foehner Wells does not disappoint. She is a gifted writer and a self-professed geeky science nerd. Her take on zombies with an alien twist is a refreshing and original read."Hybrid" Geoffrey Wakeling's story of a young, 17-year-old with the weight of saving the world on her shoulders was engrossing and asks the question, "What would you be willing to do to survive?""Freefall" I'm a Peter Cawdron fan. His take on an astronaut who, unaffected by a zombie plague, has to make some tough choices, was original and heart-tugging. I hope he plays it out into a full length story."Curing Khang Yeo" by Deirdre Gould. Wow. I'm new to this author, but will be looking for more of her work. Her juxtaposition on the psychological ramifications of "curing" zombies after they've committed horrible atrocities was thought-provoking and sensitive. How would you feel after doing horrible things that were beyond your control but fully within your memories? What would you do about it? This was a terrific read!I enjoyed every story in the collection. They are original and thought provoking and I think it's well worth your time and money.I was provided an Advance Review Copy in exchange for my unbiased review.

This anthology twists and tears apart the standard zombie troupe’s By Andrea Luhman Reading most of the short stories in this anthology twists and tears apart the standard zombie troupe’s. The range of places, emotions, and the various takes each story had based on zombie mythology impressed me. The following were my favorites:*Vindica by Ann Christy had vivid characters and I was quickly drawn into the post apocalyptic crisis. I liked how Christy’s exploration into social hierarchy in a small community and lengths some will go to stabilize or change their position.*Six Day’s by Therea Kay was horror done in a heart-wrenching manner. It was easy to relate to the protagonists dilemma and root for her success.*The Fall of Percedus by: Jennifer Foehner Wells was a suspenseful nail biter. I was into the story very quickly and could not read it fast enough. I loved the inception of the zombie transition in this story.*Z-Ball by: Will Swardson. Be prepared, to be amazed by this short story. It takes talent to make the protagonist, antagonist, and two supporting characters come to life in so few words; a feat many authors can’t pull off in a full-blown novel. You need to buy this anthology just so you can read this short. I really enjoyed the layering of political intrigue, money, fame, fortune, and what is tolerated in sports franchising verses the rest of the modern world.*Gloria by: Hugh Howey. Horrifying, and I left the read feeling very disturbed.*Hybrid by: Geoffrey Wakeling. I was hooked instantly by the action and the need to know what was happening in the story. This was a page-turner with lots of scary moments watching the protagonist trying to get down dark hallways where a zombie could be waiting. I also liked the suspense of waiting to see if the cure was really a cure or an impetus to spark something else.*Free Fall by: Peter Cawdron-I’m going to buy his novel after reading this short. This story had everything I love about the science of traveling to and from space. I really loved how Cawdron explored some of the emotions and human needs that might connect us or breaks us a part during conflict and stress.*The World After by: Angela Cavanaugh. You want to buy this anthology so you can read this short story. Cavanaugh has a beautifully balanced narrative style that relates complex cultural information while still pressing the action of the story forward. All the things that took place in this short amazed me: there were surprise discoveries, love lost, betrayal, battles, new allegiances formed, a rescue mission, lovers reunited, and a heroic escape. It left me wanting to read more.

Though it lacks moral value (A. J. Raffles steals mostly just for kicks) it has what most great classics lack, a good sense of humor. It's about Bunny, a broke journalist on the verge of comitting suicide, who seeks help from from his best friend from school. Before he realises it, he has just become the loyal side-kick of one of England's greatest thieves. As Raffles is one of the best cricket players in England, he gets invited (along with the ever-faithful Bunny) to the houses of the rich and famous of England. At night, he robs them blind. Marvelously written, its set in the Victorian period. It's packed with action and adventure, and a lot of cynnical jokes. A great introduction to classics, it is a more relaxed story than most books of it's era. Though A. J. Raffles and Bunny are not exactly great role-models for young readers, their almost devious acts are ammended by their courageous acts on the battle field. I definitely recommend reading the Amateur Cracksman!

Raffles was an English gentleman who was also an amateur safe-cracker and all-around burglar with the aid of his somewhat reluctant junior partner "Bunny".Raffles and Bunny have been compared to Holmes and Watson and for good reason. Hornung's sister was married to Arthur Conan Doyle and acknowledged his debt to his better-known in-law. Taking the role of Watson, Bunny authored the recollections of Raffles' criminal exploits (necessarily published after-the-fact, however). Whereas Bunny clung (somewhat unsuccessfully) to Victorian morality, Raffles' genius could be not be bounded by mere social custom. Raffles, however, was not evil; he just enjoyed high living and supporting that life style by stealing jewels from indolent rich people struck him as entirely reasonable.Raffles, by the way, was gentleman by merit, that is, he was a world class cricket player, but did not have the family background or personal wealth to be otherwise qualified as a gentleman. At the time, this manner of entering the British elite was quite new. Only twenty years earlier, being a well-known athlete would scarcely have opened the doors to the social elite. Indeed, merely having money would not have pried open the doors either. The doors opened to such parvenus only in the aftermath of the agricultural depression that devastated the economic power of the land-based aristocracy (followed shortly by declines in their social and political power). See the excellent history The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy by David Cannadine.Like Doyle with Holmes, Hornung tried to kill off Raffles only to bring him back in response to popular demand. Unlike Holmes, the Raffles stories quickly faded from prominence. This decline in popularity may have been partially due to lingering Victorian unease with the antihero. In my mind it was also at least partially due to the fact that the stories, while quite entertaining, are not as good as the Holmes tales. Recommended.

By A Customer This entertaining book is almost forgotten now, but during the first part of the century is was one of the favorite books of every teenage boy in the English-speaking world. They loved to read about Raffles, the upper-class and charming Amateur Cracksman (thief) and his adventures.Raffles himself is indeed great fun, I love the idea of an upper-class young Englishman who takes to crime rather than get a job, which after all would interfere with his high society life and amateur cricket career. The book is a series of related stories, each slyly witty and subversive, each a clever detective story in reverse. The reason they were indeed detective stories in reverse is simple: E.W. Hornung was the brother-in-law of Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Hornung wrote these stories partly as a satire on Holmes (and Watson, his narrator "Bunny" is a rock-stupid, dead-on parody), and partly just to annoy. It worked, Conan Doyle worried about this book's effect on the public morals! Now, who wouldn't enjoy a book written to annoy a self-righteous in-law? Especially if the book is actually good? (The book was later made into a weak film starring David Niven, and inspired "To Catch a Thief")
