However, as I read the book, this thought changed. I really like how the story goes from chapter to chapter. The story is very unpredictable. I also like how the characters are depicted. I will continue to follow this author. Great book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Edgy and Adventurous By Avid Reader In a clever play with structure, The FlashDogs released Volume II of their series of anthologies in two parts, one inspired by the summer solstice, and this one, DARK, inspired by midwinter. Two interesting photo prompts serve as anchor points for the widely varying stories presented in the DARK volume, one called “City of Light” and one called “Wall.” Both images are evocative and brought out strong stories from the FlashDogs, who never cease to startle me with their vast capacity for both traditional storytelling and truly experimental writing. This volume leaned more heavily towards the sci-fi and fantasy genres, with stand out pieces by Sarah Cain, Chris Milam, Brett Milam, David Borrowdale, Kristen Falso-Capaldi, and Nancy Chenier. If you are a fan of flash fiction, don’t miss either installment, DARK or LIGHT, in FlashDogs Volume II.

Five hundred years ago, the church of Jesus Christ underwent a Reformation. A lot happened after Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. But the fallout was not simply the start of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church also recast itself in response to Luther’s call for reforms. And contrary to common belief, Martin Luther did not set out to start a new church. Rather, he was trying to reform the church that already existed by reemphasizing its essence—namely, the “good news” (the gospel) that Jesus forgives and saves sinners. The unity of the church was broken when the pope rejected this call for reform and excommunicated Luther, starting a chain of events that did lead to the institutional fracturing of Christendom and to a plethora of alternative Christian theologies. But, as many - including conservative Catholics - now admit, the church did in fact need reforming. Today, the church - including its Protestant branches - also needs reforming. Some of the issues in contemporary Christianity are very similar to those in the late Middle Ages, though others are new. But if Luther’s theology can be blamed - however unfairly - for fragmenting Christianity, perhaps today it can help us recover the wholeness of Christianity. The religious climate in the early 21st-century is simultaneously highly religious and highly secularized. It is a time of extraordinary spiritual and theological diversity. In the spirit of the anniversary we are observing, this book will propose the kind of Christianity that is best suited for our day. The remedies offered here are available by way of the same theology that was the catalyst for reforming the church five hundred years ago.

Where Christ is Present There Is Vocation By Bror Erickson “Where Christ is Present”This collection of essays contributed to and edited by John Warwick Montgomery and Gene Edward Veith is a product of the 1517 Legacy who gave me a promo copy for review. The 1517 Legacy Project is largely centered around Concordia University Irvine where its founder Rod Rosenbladt of “The Gospel for Those Broken by the Church” fame, and longtime cohost of ‘The White Horse Inn” radio show, has long taught theology and apologetics. I have long considered the $40,000 I spent to study under him at Concordia Irvine for two years to be the best money I ever spent. The goal of this organization, in line with this book, is to bring the insights of the Lutheran Reformation back into public consciousness. This book is largely aimed at those who are looking at various churches for whatever reason and then making a case for becoming Lutheran. To this end, several of the early essays do some comparisons of the gospel as it is presented in different churches, and why the Lutheran distinctive matters. Much in these essays draw upon the experience of their authors in other church bodies before themselves becoming Lutheran. As the book progresses, this theme leaves off in examinations particular Lutheran facets in the realm of Lutheran doctrine and culture.I especially liked “Vocation versus Narcissus” By Uwe Siemon-Netto explicating the Lutheran doctrine of vocation relating how the gospel frees us to be servants of our neighbors. His application of the Max Weber thesis to the Lutheran Doctrine of Vocation in relation to the automobile industry was fascinating, especially his citation of Roland Peugeot crediting the Lutheran doctrine of vocation in being instrumental to the quality of the Peugeot product. This theme carries on into essays by Craig Parton concerning a Lutheran gospel centered freedom concerning music and the arts using the legacy of Bach to illustrate the genius of it. Angus Menuge picks up on this same freedom to show how the Lutheran Reformation helped carry along the Copernican Revolution by actually publishing Copernicus, influencing Kepler (ironically away from Holy Ministry, to a holy service in science) and driving the work of Tycho Brahe, mostly by breaking the alliance of theology with Aristotelian philosophy that had so long dominated the Roman Catholic Church with tyrannical results. Angus uses this as a warning against making the Christian faith dependent upon any particular scientific worldview or philosophy in one’s presentation of it.These essays will not only be good for those inquiring into the Lutheran Church, but for many Lutherans who may not understand the great cultural contributions of the Lutheran faith, and how they continue even today. More to the point, pastors and other Lutherans who are interested in the work of evangelism, that is sharing your Christian faith with friends and neighbors who perhaps are not Christian, or are suffering the effects of bad Christian theology at the local non-denominational big box church, will find this book to be a refreshing resource to help you shape your conversation and deepen your own understanding of the Christian faith.

Lutheranism 102: The Conservative Reformation By John J Bombaro The 500th anniversary of the Reformation will see a profusion of publications analyzing virtually every aspect of the sixteenth century megashift in Christianity triggered by the daring genius of one Augustinian Friar named Martin Luther. Fast out of the gates is this volume edited by John Warwick Montgomery and Gene Edward Veith with worthy contributions by notable Lutherans within the American academic and pastoral scene. This book, however, makes an important distinction between the Conservative Reformation and the Radical Reformation, that is, between confessional Lutheranism and much of the rest of Protestantism. It is a monumental distinction manifest in terms of theology, praxis, liturgy, sacramentology, and vocation. And it is a helpful and necessary distinction. As each of the authors make abundantly clear, Lutheranism isn’t your garden variety fellowship of believers amidst a largely indistinct panoply of denominations. No. Confessional Lutherans are “evangelical-catholics” (p.32), whose theological epicenter is the Cross of Christ and who, at the same time, conserve the valued and useful traditions of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church, so long as they do not hinder the Holy Gospel but rather assist in the church’s catechesis. Of the twelve chapters, editor Gene Edward Veith offers one of the more useful contributions through his diagnosis of contemporary American Christianity. Likewise, Cameron A. MacKenzie’s chapter adroitly sketches Luther’s theological and pastoral journey in context and further traces the trajectories of disagreement with Calvinists and Anabaptists, as well as Roman Catholics, though without being pugnacious but rather gracious. Adam Francisco’s chapter entitled, “Authority: The Holy Scriptures”, shows nuance and sensitivity regarding sola scriptura — rightly distancing Luther and Lutheranism from implausible solo scriptura commitments, fundamentalism, and the all-too-common failure to recognized how God uses His Word. The three standout chapters come from Todd Wilken (“God’s Two Kingdoms”), Uwe Siemon-Netto (“Vocation versus Narcissus”), and Craig Parton (“Christian Liberty, The Arts, and J.S. Bach”). Each essay is worth the price of the book. Collectively, this is a welcome contribution from Lutherans saying, as it were, ‘Here we stand with the Gospel in Word and Sacraments.’ Lutherans longing to understand their holy faith more deeply, evangelicals dissatisfied with trivialities and emotionalism, Calvinists recognizing the efficacy of God’s Word in the sacraments and liturgy, and disenfranchised Roman Catholics will find rich faire for their souls at Wittenberg, the home of the conservative Reformation.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Why the Reformation Matters . . . and Still Does!!! By Brian Thomas Excellent book by NPR and 1517 the Legacy Project! I must confess that I typically do not care for multi-author works, but the consistent format of each chapter keeps the reading clear and focused as each author explains the Lutheran Reformation view on the topics of Scripture, the Gospel, Justification by Faith, Two Kingdoms, Vocation, the arts, etc. in contrast to other Christian traditions. If you ever wanted to know not only what the Reformation was about, but why it was so vital - both then and especially NOW - do yourself a favor and pick this up. This book would especially work well for a small Bible study or Sunday school class in the church.

The world of economics is changing. Years of turmoil in the global economy mean that nothing will ever be quite the same again. This is the starting point and theme of this radically revised Economist books classic, now available for the first time in America.Richard Davies, economics editor of The Economist, takes us on a journey through the paper's own analysis of the state of the world's economies, how we reached this point and what to expect in the next decade. He explores:what's gone wrong since 2008, why it's happened and how we can stop it happening again;the shifting focus of economics from banking to labor economics;the future hopes and challenges for the world economy.Along the way, we encounter the global economy laid bare, from banks, panics, and crashes to innovative new policies to improve how markets function; from discussions around jobs, pay, and inequality to the promise of innovation and productivity; from the implications of emerging markets and the globalisation of trade through to the sharing economy and the economics of Google and eBay.The result is a fascinating review of the global economy and the changing role of economics in the new world order.

What would happen if time, the fragile thread that both leads and binds us, could be unwound as simply as untying a knot? Would we go back, charging through our own history, changing and tweaking, plucking at that fragile thread until time itself unraveled all around us? Would we create countless universes through which we could live our fantasies--or would we become our own nightmares? Would we blaze ahead, reckless and wild, into our own futures? Would we become our own heroes, or would we become villains?Join us for a series of stories that explore time, through the eyes of those bold enough to conquer it, and foolish enough to try to control it. From the award-winning team of authors at Clean Teen Publishing, TWISTS IN TIME will both entertain and challenge the way you see the world around you. Because when one finds a way to break the barrier of time, endless worlds of possibilities emerge.  This book has been rated using the Crimson Tree Publishing Disclosure System. About the Author

Jon Messenger (Born 1979 in London, England) serves as an United States Army Major in the Medical Service Corps. Since graduating from the University of Southern California in 2002, writing Science Fiction has remained his passion, a passion that has continued through multiple combat and humanitarian deployments. Jon wrote the Brink of Distinction trilogy, of which Burden of Sisyphus is the first book, while serving a 16-month deployment in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sherry is a full time writer from Colorado where she lives with her husband, four kids, two dogs, and a fluctuating number of chickens and house guests. A former military brat, she loves to travel, eat exotic food, and meet new people. She can often be found browsing her local bookstore with a large white hot chocolate in one hand and a towering stack of books in the other. That is, unless she's on deadline at which time she, like the Loch Ness monster, is often only seen in blurry photographs.

Originally from Ohio, Julie always dreamed of a job in science. Either shooting for the stars or delving into the mysteries of volcanoes. But, life never leads where you expect. In 2007, she moved to Mississippi to be with her significant other.

Now a mother of a hyperactive red headed boy, what time she’s not chasing down dirty socks and unsticking toys from the ceiling is spent crafting worlds readers can get lost it. Julie is a self-proclaimed bibliophile and lover of big words. She likes hiking, frogs, interesting earrings, and a plethora of other fun things.

Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and training at various companies. She's often found lamenting, It's hard to write when there's so many good books to read! So, when she's not immersed in the middle of someone else's fantasy world, she's busy creating one of her own. This world is introduced in her first novel, Never Forgotten. Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. They share their home with Clyde the Whoodle and a school of fish.

Born in Pomona, California, Kathy-Lynn Cross lived there for twelve years until her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada—where she resides still to this day. Inspired by the backdrop of Sin City, Kathy-Lynn took her English professor’s advice and wrote about the hometown that she knew.

Kathy-Lynn wasn’t always a writer. In 2008, when her niece was hospitalized, Kathy-Lynn decided to do something special for her so she wrote a short tale for her to read. After devouring it in a single day, her niece and the nurses in the pediatrics wing quickly asked her, “What’s next?” That was when a new chapter in her life opened up, and Kathy-Lynn realized that she wanted to become a Storyweaver.

Kathy-Lynn loves the color red and obsessively uses it in everything, including her bottle-blonde hair accented by red highlights. She has a knack for baking and cake decorating—that is, when her fingers are not busy writing mayhem. When recharging, you could find her curled up with a cup of coffee and a good book or spending time with her hubby of nineteen years, two kids, four cats, and the family dog.

Born in Dekalb, Illinois, Amanda Strong has called Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia and now New Mexico home. Amanda has been spinning tales since she was a child. Her family still remembers finding young Amanda with her bright pink glasses, hiding in random corners of the house while scribbling away in one of her many spiral-bound notebooks. You could say that some things never change since Amanda is still writing today. Amanda began her writing career when she uploaded The Awakener, her first full-length novel, on Wattpad where it received over 430,000 reads in four weeks. She was blown away and humbled by the reader support and feedback she received. Because of The Awakener's success as a non-published book, she was asked to talk on 1400 KSTAR about her story.

Sandy Goldsworthy was born and raised in a small Wisconsin town. Her passion for writing began when her high school English teacher inspired her to be more descriptive in her work. Today, Sandy is writing the second book of Emma and Ben’s story. When she’s not writing, Sandy enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and two children, Brittany and Kyle, or playing with her English Mastiff, Miles.

Sandy Goldsworthy signed Aftermath—her first novel, with Clean Teen Publishing in 2014.

I'm a mom who writes books in her spare time: translation--I hide in the bathroom with my laptop and lock the door while the kids destroy the house and smear peanut butter on the walls. I was born in Utah but moved around a bit, living in Kansas, Texas, and Hawaii where I studied marine biology. I'm now back in Utah--happy valley. I'm married to a wonderful husband, James, and we are currently raising 6 rambunctious children. My interests are reading, writing (or course), martial arts, visual arts, creating Halloween props, and spending time with family.

If you ask Kasi Blake how old she was when she started writing, she will probably say twelve. That's when she wrote her first short story. But it started long before then. Her first characters were invisible friends she played with as a child. In the third grade she wrote a one-page story about a mummy for an assignment, and the teacher read it to the class. Even though she was embarrassed, the other kids laughed in all the right places, and she realized she could affect other people through her writing. She loves to get lost in emotional stories, crying and laughing with the characters, so she thinks it's the most amazing thing in the world to be able to do this for other people.  Originally from California, she resides in the Midwest on a farm with cows, chickens, ducks, a dog, and two cats.

By Ethan@ OneGuysGuideToGoodReads Full review and more available at: http://oneguysguidetogoodreads.blogspot.com/2015/07/twists-in-time-anthology-from-clean.html*****My Thoughts:Since I already shared my thoughts via Instagram on this read, I'll keep this short. Generally speaking, I'm not a short story or anthology kind of person. In all honesty, I usually find them to be a waste of my time. If I'm going to sit down and take the time to actually read a story, I want more from it. I want a full story. That's just me. So when Clean Teen/Crimson Tree Publishing released this anthology centered around time travel, I didn't know what to think. I had no idea I'd enjoy this read as much as I did!I'm not going to review each of these nine stories individually, but I will say there wasn't a single one that didn't capture my full attention. Each story clocked in at fewer than 20 pages, but each one packed a huge punch in those few words. I was left flat our angry a few times because I really wanted to know what came next! This was my first read from a handful of these authors (Kathy-Lynn Cross, Kelly Risser, Holly Kelly, Sandy Goldsworthy and Kasi Blake), but just based on their ability to craft such a fulfilling story in such a short capacity, I know I'll love their full length works. Thanks to Twists in Time I have added several new books to my TBR. Each story was unique and amazing on it's own, combine the nine of them together and you've got one powerhouse read.I'm a little on the fence about time travel stories, if only because they are so... unrealistic that it oftentimes drives me away. While none of these stories was solely rooted in 'reality', each one took a different twist on the time travel theme. It was definitely interesting. From Kelly Risser's emotional journey, to Holly Kelly and Sandy Goldsworthy's historic fictions, to Sherry Ficklin's steampunk, to Kathy-Lynn Cross' sci-fi: there is a short story here for readers of all types. If you aren't a fan of time travel, you will be by the time you finish this!All-in-all, I can definitely say without hesitation that this was the best anthology I have read to-date. This shouldn't surprise anyone, because as you guys well know, I am a huge supporter of Clean Teen/Crimson Tree Publishing and all of their authors. They really only put out the best work. This was a short read, clocking in at just 160 pages, but readers of all ages will devour this one! I am granting Twists in Time a phenomenal 5-star review. Definitely worth adding to your TBR!*****

I read half of it in one sitting and the other half in another sitting. This is a magnificent bunch of writers by themselves, but then put them together for an Anthology and you have a suspenseful, blow your mind, edge of your seat of Twisted and unforeseen plots in each and every story. I really can't say that I have a favorite one, but the one that got me the most was It's the Little Things by Jon Messenger that got me. I was shocked and totally floored by the end of this story. It really had a twisted ending to it that I won't forget anytime soon. Each of these stories are amazing and I would highly recommend getting it and reading it for yourself, and then remember this review and see if you will agree with me. In all the Anthologies that I have read in 2015, this one wins the #1 slot of the year in my book.Clean Teen Publishing provided me with a digital ARC copy of the book for review purposes only. No remuneration was exchanged.

Twenty-two tales from nineteen of the most unique authors working in the horror and speculative field today, all congealed into one fleshy mass for your reading enjoyment. Whether you want to become 'A New You,' are leading a 'Double Life,' or are merely looking for some chills 'Within Walking Distance,' the third volume of the Robbed of Sleep series will have you up all night, taking the 'Bait' and scaring yourself 'Wordless.' Not enough title-based puns? Seriously: that's the best we could come up with. But the nineteen authors in this alternately hilarious, disturbing, moving, and unhinged book have provided stories that truly are worth staying up for, and, as always, work tirelessly to ensure you are utterly ROBBED OF SLEEP.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Worth reading By Kenneth Gagne I've never really been a huge fan of anthologies. It's always interesting to be exposed to a variety of different styles or to experience glimpses into several different worlds in the same book, but that exposure and those glimpses don't always lead to memorable experiences. Fortunately, every story in here is a memorable experience, with characters and events that are described in such a way that readers feel as though they are listening to the characters or participating in events first-hand or that they could be under the right (or perhaps more appropriately, wrong) circumstances, despite the fact that these characters and events only span a few pages. This is commendable in and of itself, but especially commendable for the genre, and so I recommend this anthology to fans of the genre, but more importantly, to anyone who's ever chosen a good read over getting shut-eye and had no regrets whatsoever in the morning.

Allen Cook Every author represented here adds specific spice to this anthology, creating course after course of wild, unusual fare. An incomplete sampling of the exotic treats within includes:Trevor Dawson starting things off with a bang--literally!--with "If You're Reading This, You're Dead". Alan Graham channels his inner Poe with "The Show Business Memories of Mr. Pancake", while "Dollface", by Guy Medley, infuses the piece with beauty that is only skin deep. Peter Turner's "The Neverborn" is as good as Ellison ever was; "Double Life", by Angelo Bottigliero, though fraught with paranoia, elicits a hearty laugh (but I won't ruin the fun here). If only one had room to comment on all here, sizzling authors contributing stories of startling beauty and terror, including Roger Colby, Anthony Rapino, Cheryl Zaidan, and many more. The real stunners are editor/contributor, Troy Blackford, with his usual flair for convincing dialogue and character, and the series' resident hellraiser, Val Tenterhosen, represented here twice, who--I'm sure--will continue to infuriate critics and delight readers with skewed stories of fibrous monsters and people who aren't really people at all. (There's a story that takes place on a train that really will rob you of sleep.)This is an excellent series, and "Robbed of Sleep 3" keeps up the pace, leaving readers longing for more, more, more.

Don't know how much time there is left for me for I made the mistake of reading the first story. This is the ideal reading to fight a summer heat wave. Those stories are goose-bumping, spine-chilling, blood-freezing, and, well, sort of cool!DISCLAIMER: One story came from me, but this fact didn't affect my rating. Scout's honor! In this collection of six short works of fiction, author Richard Michael O’Meara puts readers in the boots of infantrymen during the Vietnam War and takes them on a powerful experiential journey.

Beginning with basic training and ending with the difficult, often fraught, transition back to civilian life after the war, Going Home for Apples and Other Stories covers most of the aspects of military service during this controversial and often misunderstood period in US history.

With great compassion and without judgment, O’Meara marches his characters—and his readers—through boot camp, firefights, court martials, life in the field, and the process of homecoming.

Though realistic in his portrayal of the war, O’Meara brings humanity and even moments of humor to his subjects. He paints vivid pictures and then lets those portraits speak for themselves about the price of war and the toll it takes on the people who serve on behalf of those back at home.

Going Home for Apples and Other Stories, by Richard Michael O'Meara

From Kirkus Reviews A debut collection of short stories detailing the lives of American soldiers. A contemporary trend in military memoirs is to depict a soldier as more of a victim than a warrior, traumatized rather than ennobled by service. Swimming against that current, O’Meara gathers together six fictional stories that celebrate martial honor while still exposing the grim aspects of warfare. The first, titular story centers on the rigors of boot camp; it’s dominated by the specter of the Vietnam War and tells of the deep camaraderie that results from facing hardship together. In “Cantor’s Fairytale,” the author layers multiple narratives over one another as a group of soldiers passes the time besting each other with beer-soaked tales of military life. “A Sort of War Story” depicts the horrors of an actual battle in which six American infantrymen in Vietnam hold off a troop of enemy soldiers several times their number. The stories don’t sidestep complex issues, such as race; in “Justice,” a black sergeant is threatened with a court martial for stealing a jeep, an unusually harsh and suspicious penalty. However, a jury of officers is offended by the injustice of it all and acquits him of the charges. The dialogue is always gritty, inclining toward authenticity rather than political correctness. For example, an infamously demanding drill sergeant explains the rationale for his mercilessness: “Remember, if somebody dies, and they’re dyin’ everyday, it’s your fault. Remember this little drill—ain’t nothin’ to what we’re gonna’ have to do in the Nam.” The stories use Vietnam as a theme and serve as an instructive counterpoint to narrative accounts, novelistic and cinematic, which often emphasize drug use, amoral abandon, and postbellum trauma as soldiers’ defining features. Still, they present the chilling violence of battle and its psychological impact in unvarnished form. In O’Meara’s telling, despite routine acts of heroism and courage, the soldiers who served in Vietnam did so humbly, out of senses of patriotic ardor and professional pride. Overall, this is a gripping glimpse into the lives of soldiers living and dying side by side. An unabashedly patriotic compilation that impressively sheds light on the nature of military life.-Kirkus Review

This collection of stories has the reader comfortable and familiar from the very start, as if they were actually taking part and present with the characters. It is evident that the author has reached into his own history to share experiences in a way that can be understood by the many. For those who have served our country and their families, these stories especially connect with the thoughts, feelings, and memories gone through, without getting caught up in disparity. Highly recommended!

But to me that makes “Going Home for Apples” even the more remarkable. Who knew he could really really write? Rick is this gnarly righteous guy who entered the Army as an enlisted man and exited as a one-star. I have always been impressed by his ability to think – he’ll need a face transplant before anyone sees that as obvious. But a writer? This is a remarkable collection of fictions. They individually and collectively have character, plot, description, and evocation. They are compelling and professional. As is he, in all he does, come to think of it. I commend this book to your attention if you have the slightest interest in the culture and values of the American people who have served. It really pulls you along.

Compelling Portraits of the Vietnam Soldier's Experience By R L Palmer "Going Home for Apples and other stories" is a complex and compelling collection of stories and vignettes that look back at the unsung existence of ordinary soldiers during the Vietnam War. The author, a Vietnam infantry veteran, speaks through the voices of junior officers and enlisted men to bring vividly to life the prosaic and chaotic, comedic and horrific, experiences of young men as they prepare for, and live and die through terrifying war in the jungle. The tales tell of heroism and racism and range from basic training through camp life through firefights on to the nightmares that too often followed Vietnam vets into civilian life. It is a truly well-crafted portrait that focuses the reader, often uncomfortably, on who really pays the price, and how high it can be, of war.

New York Times best-selling author Miranda Beverly-Whittemore weaves a dreamy, suspenseful tale: a clever child's recollection of a summer's day turned frightening. Francesca, Kelly, and Kelly's teenage sister Amanda are only meant to spend several hours at the pool together, while their professor parents finish up an afternoon of work at their lush, Oregon college. The younger girls are caught up in hair braiding and Marco Polo, but Amanda is poised on the cusp of an adult realm bursting with cruel secrets.

When the girls run into a beautiful, anxious woman and her toddler, Amanda starts to act in ways that may well transform an unremarkable day into a dark turning point in all their lives. By turns enchanting and terrifying, and always bursting with vivid emotion, Frito Lay brings us deep into our own childhood memories, reminding us that the dark and sinister were never quite as far away as we might have believed.

What in the world was she doing? How could she be so cruel? Then, Beverly-Whittemore smoothly showed exactly why Amanda's actions were understandable, if still cruel. This masterful twist left me thinking about the story long afterwards--why did I judge Amanda so harshly? What lessons does Francesca, the young narrator, learn from this afternoon? Like Beverly-Whittemore's other writing, this story is so well-rendered that you can almost smell the chlorine of this afternoon in the pool. Yet there's plenty of room for the reader's imagination to carry on long after the last page.

By Erin Cosenza Reading FRITO LAY threw me back to the days before I could fill out a bikini, when French fries and ice cream had zero effect on my figure and jumping off the high dive was the scariest thing I could imagine. (And how I wish it still were!) Back then, I didn't realize that the pool club could be such a dangerous place, especially for a little one....now, as a mom, I found myself wanting to scream through the pages of the book at the central characters for their behavior.FRITO LAY is both utterly dark and completely relatable. Everyone, regardless of age, gender, skin color, whatever, has their secrets and their darkness; that darkness comes out of some more readily and more violently than it does out of others, as you'll discover while you're reading this. It's very reminiscent of Ms. Beverly-Whittemore's BITTERSWEET in that it explores social and class relationships with a strong focus on the cattiness and often less-than-genuine affection between female characters. The only downside to this short story, as opposed to the novel that is BITTERSWEET, is its length -- you're left hanging as though you'd decided to jump off the high dive and then grabbed onto the board in a last-minute change of heart. I want to know more about these characters, their backstories, and what happens next!If you choose to download FRITO LAY and then discover that you love it, I strongly suggest that you immediately follow it with BITTERSWEET!! Happy reading! :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. And she does an equally good job of ratcheting up the tension leading up to ... By Victoria In FRITO LAY, Beverly-Whittemore, as she did in BITTERSWEET, uses the perspective of a less affluent and less worldly protagonist to explore power dynamics, romantic entanglements, and the peculiarities of youthful female friendship. The author skillfully tells the reader quite a lot with only a few words--critical for achieving the story's depth, given its short length. And she does an equally good job of ratcheting up the tension leading up to the high-stakes climax. My only disappointment, really, was that I was left wanting to see/know/experience a little more about some of the characters.I'm typically more of a novel reader, but some short stories, maybe because they are short enough that some things are inevitably left unsaid, can really capture the imagination in the best possible way. I'd put FRITO LAY in that camp.

Disappointing follow-up to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" By rebel_scum This is the second of three mystery novels (but the third one that I read) starring Poe's C. Auguste Dupin character, often credited with being the first fictional detective. I found this one far inferior to the other two Dupin stories, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter". Dupin is a wonderful character, and fans of Sherlock Holmes will notice the similarities and the debt Holmes owes to Poe and Dupin, but this story was quite frankly rather boring. It consisted mostly of several long, boring discourses regarding logic, the merits of chess versus draughts, etc. After reading the first two Dupin stories, I was very excited for this, but I actually found it tough to make it through.

By Kindle Customer Poe's style is somewhat dark and spooky, so if that is what you like, I think you will like this. I Love the fact it is available on Kindle, because it makes it much more convenient to read..If you like dark and spooky, it is perfect!
