This is not normally my type of reading material but once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Each story kept me wanting to know what would happen next.

It explains the importance of a well designed list and how to manage it. It could use some more guide techniques and examples. But this appears to be a lead magnet so it does its job well. Learn how some of the world’s most inspiring women are using their growing economic power to create success and meaning in their lives while building a better world. . . and how you can too. Important conversations about leaning in, work/life balance and empowering women and girls around the world have energized a generation of women. Fast Forward, by two women leaders whose experience spans corporate America, public service, and global diplomacy, takes the next step. Through interviews with a network of more than seventy trailblazing women, Fast Forward shows women how to accelerate their growing economic power and combine it with purpose to find both success and meaning in their lives. Companies, countries, and organizations the world over are waking up to today’s new reality. Women control the lion’s share of purchasing power and are increasingly essential to competitiveness. The age of women’s transformative economic influence has finally arrived, and women are using their power for purpose, redefining what power and success mean in the process. Through clear, practical advice and personal stories of women around the world — including Hillary Clinton, Geena Davis, Christine Lagarde, and Diane von Furstenberg — Fast Forward shows every woman how to know her power, find her purpose, and connect with others to achieve her life’s goals.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Recommended Highly By KATHI We are often indifferent to the measurable value of empowering half or more of our world's population whether we are referring to girls or women. This book attempts to change our destructive indifference with real life examples and ways for us to move forward and make a difference that can have overarching effects worldwide. This book complements Half the Sky, another compelling book on empowering women which I also reviewed. While there is some overlap, this one focuses more on women in developed countries than developing. It is a primer on how women can break that glass ceiling in business, politics, the tech field and other aspects of leadership. While Hillary Clinton's work is featured, this is NOT a book that promotes her or her politics per se. The main message of the book is when women are involved in all aspects of society including leadership, more of our collective potential is realized. The book uses anecdotes that are interesting and compelling and then shifts to models that have worked in those instances. At times the facts get dense and the narrative slows a bit, but the examples are valuable.Women in business, politics, the media and Hollywood are showcased as advancing this work. Some of the women included who have been instrumental in their fields are Laura Bush, Sandra Day O'Conner, Kate Spade, Oprah and Meryl Streep. Without women with money, access to power, or both, others will not be lifted up and along. It is a necessary collaboration because women have been shut out for so long and need the "foot in the door" to succeed. By giving examples of their successes the book illustrates how raising up women help the family, help the village and sometimes even the wider population. Interestingly there are not examples of men, who have money or are in power formally assisting in this effort through their leadership positions or their corporate access. If this is an oversight or a reality, I do not know, but if it is the latter, our battles and successes will always be hard fought and fewer without their support. One example in a developing country showcased a woman whose family came to depend on a second more steady income. The woman's talents turned into a bartering arrangement in the village for her families' food. A micro-loan to her grew this business into, not only a steady second income, but a career, helping her family and her village as she became the employer of hundreds of villagers.Another example was giving women in developing countries access to Western higher education . Upon graduating some of these women returned to these villages as doctors and other professionals, actively making a difference in their own villages. At the end of the book, the appendix was classified as a "toolkit-anecdote to action", coming full circle and showing others how to achieve what the women in the book achieved-whether the women were the role models or the beneficiaries. The book is an important first step, not to be overlooked. I recommend it highly.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Call To Action By Lucygold I found this book thought provoking, inspiring, challenging and motivating. The many examples of how empowering women is a win/win proposition for the woman, their families, communities and the corporations who hire them was thought prorvoking. The premise that where ever one finds oneself one can identify ways to support a greater purpose and find fulfillment in the process is inspiring. The call to connect with others is challenging because I tend to be a lone wolf (but the case is well-made that to be successful we must connect with like-minded others...and I liked that the authors are showing the way forward for a revolution with all parties holding hands and marching to the same tune.).This is above-all a call to action with a 'toolkit" to help the reader get started.

14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. High fiber, but low in nutrients By JoAnne Goldberg Women consume more books than men do, and publishers are always looking for new material to serve those hungry readers. When the market is flooded with fashion books, romances, four friends tales, and Fifty Shades sequels, that's the signal that it's time for a new, inspiring book about women achieving success in a man's world. The publisher of Fast Forward wants you to believe that this effort could be a Lean In-like blockbuster, but Sheryl and her ghost were not only better writers, they had a vision for their book and a story to tell. Fast Forward can't figure out whether it's a compilation of every working woman anecdote ever told, a shout out to all the third world women who have created poverty-blasting solutions (recycling trash into art? How clever!), or an exhortation to apply that excess female energy to help nonprofits. You'll live longer!Hillary Rodham Clinton writes the foreword, the reader's first clue that names will be liberally dropped, often to no good effect, and that politically liberal sensibilities will rule the day.Reading this book help me understand what must be like to suffer with ADHD. The book flits from topic to topic, covering many subjects, all at bathwater depth. In one paragraph we're talking about Ada Lovelace, we jump to an unrelated middle school science project, followed by a brief interlude with Melinda Gates describing the virtues of all-girl schools, and then an anecdote about a dean who transformed a male science-oriented school into one that is hospitable to girls. If you adore platitudes and gasp in wonder at bold and magnificent statements like "women are one of the most powerful demographic groups the world has ever seen," you may find this book inspiring. If you have ever read an article or blog post about managing your career, you are unlikely to obtain additional enlightenment.

If you desire a little heat, a summer flirtation, or an escape to bask in your own private sun, this whimsical collection of original short stories is inspired by all things summer. In collaboration with some of Meryton Press’s most popular and award-winning authors, this anthology debuts other promising and emerging talent. • In KaraLynne Mackrory’s Shades of Pemberley, Mr. Darcy, with some fantastic assistance, discovers Elizabeth Bennet in a most unlikely place. • Karen M. Cox’s Northanger Revisited 2015 modernizes Northanger Abbey at a fictionalized seaside in Georgia. • Linda Beutler takes us to Paris as a young gentleman is schooled in the ways of amour in The Incomplete Education of Fitzwilliam Darcy. • In Spyglasses and Sunburns, J. Marie Croft takes the Miss Bennets to the seaside where they chance upon handsome acquaintances. • In Abigail Bok’s A Summer in Sanditon, a little sea bathing seems just the thing to cure what ails Anne de Bourgh. • In Natalie Richards’ Midsummer Madness, an honest confession and a promise between strangers at a masque ball mend a misunderstanding. • Sophia Rose re-imagines a modern-day Persuasion in Second Chance at Sunset Beach. • In Morgan K Wyatt’s Dream Spinner, a near-death car accident and an unlikely trucker bring new perspective to a young co-ed’s life and love. Contemporary and Regency alike, each romance was dreamt as a perfect summer refreshment to bring a smile to your own sun-kissed face.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Not a bad apple in the bunch! By Chele Jacobson When I purchased this book, I wasn't sure what to expect, but a friend recommended it so why not. I'm so glad I downloaded it. There are 8 short stories all with a summer theme--either contemporary or Regency times. And all but one has a Jane Austen connection. Each story is a stand-alone. There is no hard-core sex in the stories, but there is one story that sex is alluded to. Several of the stories like J. Marie Croft's "Spyglasses and Sunburns" and Karen M. Cox's "Northanger Revisited 2015" are clever and the romance "tugs at the heartstrings". The stories are mostly light-hearted, easy reads--I can easily recommend "Sun-kissed" if you're looking for a fun, summer romance read.

By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) Summer is my favorite season, mostly because I get to read outside in a variety of settings – by the pool, in my hammock, at the beach. In addition, I love what summer represents – a time to go on holiday, to visit new places, to go somewhere scenic. I’m thrilled that Meryton Press, one of my favorite publishers, has published their first short-story anthology and that the theme of the anthology is summer romance. Since there are eight short-stories by eight different authors, I thought I’d briefly touch upon each story individually. I hope you find this breakdown helpful!SPYGLASSES AND SUNBURNS – J. Marie CroftType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Perfectly captured the essence of a beach holiday! Loved seeing the Gardiners and Bennets run into the Darcys and Bingleys. What a pleasant and diverting twist of events. And as always, I adore J. Marie Croft’s splendid sense of humor. Everyone seemed to get the most irregular of sunburns on this holiday!SECOND CHANCE ON SUNSET BEACH – Sophia RoseType of Story: Persuasion Inspired (Contemporary)My Thoughts: A truly beautiful and compelling romance! Takes place on Sunset Beach (my favorite kind of setting) and during a wedding weekend. It was a very moving story, Callie (Anne) is extraordinary and admirable, and her reunion with Camden (Wentworth) is everything that is tender and satisfying. One of my faves!THE INCOMPLETE EDUCATION OF FITZWILLIAM DARCY – Linda BeutlerType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Prequel (Regency) (Mature Audience)My Thoughts: Prearranged lessons for Darcy to learn the art of pleasing a woman! It was interesting to see how Darcy behaved in such a setting. I thought it was very true to character. And while the second part of the story felt a little too brief, I enjoyed seeing the connecting links to Jane Austen’s plot and timeline.MIDSUMMER MADNESS – Natalie RichardsType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Sometimes it is easier to confess the truth to a stranger! I enjoyed this sweet interlude between Darcy and Elizabeth. Their costumes, clever appellations, confessions of love, and the enchanted atmosphere of it all made me think this story was as much an ode to Shakespeare as it was to Jane Austen.SHADES OF PEMBERLEY – KaraLynne MackroryType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Imagine finding yourself locked in a room at Pemberley! I loved witnessing both Darcy and Elizabeth’s thoughts about each other. Poor Darcy thought he was seeing a ghost or going mad! Without giving away too much, I will say I loved how Ms. Mackrory hearkened back to one her previous novels (*wink wink* I see what you did there!)A SUMMER IN SANDITON – Abigail BokType of Story: Cross-Over Sequel – Pride and Prejudice/Sanditon (Regency)My Thoughts: When proposals of marriage do not befall a young lady in London or her home county she must seek them abroad! I loved seeing these characters interact with each other – especially Lady Denham and Lady Catherine! Classic! Was slightly confused as to why some Sanditon characters were altered, but overall felt like I was treated to the restorative properties of a seaside resort holiday myself! I long to go to Sanditon!DREAM SPINNER – Morgan K. WyattType of Story: Non-Austenesque (1980s)My Thoughts: Sometimes facing a new and different reality is better than living on dreams! A refreshing and inspiring story. The descriptions were vivid and the setting skillfully brought to life. Even though things progressed rather quickly I found myself interested in these characters and satisfied with this original tale.NORTHANGER REVISITED 2015 – Karen M. CoxType of Story: Northanger Abbey Inspired (Contemporary)My Thoughts: A lovely modern update! I thought the characterization just brilliant – Henry was of course adorable, Catherine endearing and open, and John Thorpe a colossal annoyance! I greatly appreciate all the nods to places and names from Northanger Abbey and thought the modernization of the events very clever and believable. One of my faves!CONCLUSION:These stories are like sun-ripened strawberries – warm, sweet, flavorful, and perfect to enjoy during the summertime! I greatly enjoyed seeing different types of stories, settings, and time periods blended together in this anthology. If anything, it would be great if there was even more variety (Pride and Prejudice inspired stories kind of tipped the balance heavily.) But overall, I found Sun-Kissed: Effusions of Summer to be a splendid way to quench your thirst for summer romance during those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer!”Austenesque Reviews

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A delightful and engaging read By Joana Starnes This lovely anthology is the perfect read for a summer’s day – or any day in fact. It has everything: exquisite romance, sparkling dialogue, much hoped-for happy endings and a few surprising twists along the way. It has hilarious moments that could make you giggle like crazy (be warned, in case you’re reading in a public place!) and moments so poignant that you would suffer alongside the characters over painful twists of fate that drew them apart. There are Regency stories written in exquisite period language and contemporary stories that skilfully bring Austen characters and themes into the modern world. You will be excessively diverted by some hilariously naughty goings-on at the seaside and enthralled by Mr. Darcy’s French education, which was not quite as incomplete as one might think ;). You will be moved to tears (I know I was) by the love story of a modern-day Anne Elliot and root for some insubstantial but very resourceful characters who are determined to assist – or rather push – Elizabeth and Mr Darcy in finding their way to each other. You will travel with Miss Anne de Bourgh and see her find her path to happiness, and also find herself in the process, and you will be invited to a summer ball where, under the protection of masks, deep-held truths are voiced at last. You will see John Thorpe perfectly translated into the most convincing modern-day lout and Catherine Morland finding a rather different Henry Tilney, who in essentials is very much like he ever was. And you will dream with the Dream Spinner and rejoice for her when she finds her own dreams. So pour yourself your favourite tall drink, put your feet up and be prepared to be delighted!

Tennessee River Cafe is a collection of interrelated short stories where you will find a delectable menu of unforgettable characters and the close-knit world they inhabit. Set in a small rural community clustered on the bluffs overlooking the Tennessee River, these stories hark back to Southern life of the late 1940's. The Tennessee River Cafe, where Miss Edna and Miss Sally, two maiden sisters, have been serving up breakfast and lunch for the past thirty-five years, is the touchstone of the stories and a common denominator for a widely diverse social order. The stories unfold in sequence, revealing the cast of characters, much as chapters in a novel, as they move in and out of the town landmarks—the cafe and bank, the hotel, grocery store, sheriff’s office, lawyer’s office—in this established and static community. But outside this constricted and public sphere, where one is always on display, exists a personal and sometimes secret world. Eccentric characters, a revival, coon hunt, trot lines, a midnight encounter with a barge, along with murder, a drunk rattler, and the death of a stranger—all are here in this quiet little town, in southern Tuscomby County, known as River Bluff, Tennessee.

Tennessee River Cafe: A Short Story Collection, by Beth Curtis

About the Author Beth Curtis was born and raised in Tennessee, where her family were among the first settlers. As she was growing up, it was not unusual for several generations of family to sit around the dinner table or on the front porch passing along stories of the past. As she listened to these old stories, she began to know and understand not only her family heritage, but the culture and traditions of her beloved state of Tennessee, and the part her family and families like hers took in shaping its history.

I find very appealing that the author expresses herself as if she is a story character. Beth has done deep perusing among people without having to talk to them and this allowed her to remember and catalogue for characters and story. The pace entices and before you know it, you are among the characters almost feeling like one. She tells the story as if she were on my front porch saying, "Did you hear about this?", and off she goes, rather like Eudora Welty. Lady-like and human-like.There must be more stories!!!!

The characters are intriguing and well-developed. The scene work makes you feel like a real fly on the wall. It is emotionally gripping and each story leaves you entranced with the characters and their lives. There seems to be a jaw-dropping and thought-provoking twist at the end of each story. Well done. I can't wait to read more from her.

They’ve helped orchestrate the perfect day for countless couples. Now twelve new couples will find themselves in the wedding spotlight in the second Year of Weddings novella collection.

April is willing to do anything for her sister’s wedding―until she comes face to face with a guy from her past.

April Quinn is thrilled to be her sister’s maid of honor, until the wedding coordinator quits and the responsibilities get dumped on her. It’s April’s worst nightmare―especially since her sister has more objections and opinions than a lawyer presenting a high-profile court case. When the wedding singer walks out at the last-minute, her sister hires a replacement. When April finds out who the replacement is, she’s ready to call it quits as well.

Because there’s only one person in April’s past that she never wanted to see again, and her sister just handed him a front row seat to the wedding.

Jack Vaughn finally has the career he’s always wanted. After playing in bars and singing in weddings as a struggling musician for half a decade, he’s just released his second album and sales are skyrocketing. But while visiting his parent’s Nashville home the weekend before his first headline tour, he runs into an old friend. When she asks him for a last-minute favor, he can’t bring himself to say no. Even though saying yes means he has to come face to face with April Quinn―the girl who hasn’t spoken to him in years.

And rightly so, since he stole something from her that he’ll never be able to repay.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 stars By i blog 4 books I'm a big fan of Amy Matayo, so I was super excited to find out that she was invited to be part of this year's A Year of Weddings series! The story itself is interesting and unique. I mean, the thought of someone making a huge career for himself by stealing another person's—and a friend's no less!—lyrics had me intrigued. Throw in reconnecting with said friend and a bridezilla and I'm totally interested. All of the drama around the wedding totally stressed me out, but it made for a good story.I think the biggest challenge for me is the length of the story. Amy writes what many consider to be "edgier" stories, so they're full of snark and sarcasm and characters that aren't quite as easy to love as what you might normally find in a romance story. While this plays out nicely in a full-length story where readers have a chance to get to know the characters over a longer period of time and more fully understand their history (and therefore their snark), for me it didn't come off quite as well in such a short novella. I really felt like this was the beginning of a story that I wanted to read a lot more of. (Amy, if you happen to be reading this and ever decide to go back and revisit April and Jack, I'll definitely read that story!)I'm thoroughly happy to have read In Tune With Love, but I want more! If you've read anything by Amy before, you'll definitely enjoy this story. And if you haven't, well, give it a shot. I'm sure glad I did! [3.5 stars]I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A different kind of wedding story ... in a good way! By Becky R. I've been on this Year of Weddings train for quite a while now—I read and reviewed all of the novellas in the first year, and I've read and reviewed most of the novellas that have released so far in the second year. As a whole, I haven't enjoyed the second year's novellas nearly as much as the first ... until now.In Tune With Love is different from all the other stories in this series so far...different in a good way. It somehow seems grittier, edgier, more realistic than many romances. It's not that it crosses the line, but it's also not your typical inspy romance. It very much fits in with Matayo's other indy-released books The Wedding Game and Love Gone Wild (and probably Sway, but I haven't read that one yet).I really enjoyed April and Jack's story, which actually reminded me a bit of Nashville. (This is a very positive comparison, as I completely love that show!) I also appreciated how the story ended. I don't want to spoil anything, but it definitely maintained the "realness" vibe.Overall, I liked this novella a lot, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Matayo's writing! 4-1/2 stars.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Pass By Librarian Laura This book was hard to read. The characters are frustrating and show very little growth. I didn't like any of them. The plot would have worked better with a novel because I didn't understand April's actions at all.I also was a little disappointed with the lack of spiritual emphasis. I don't like books to "preach" to me, but I do expect Christian characters to mention God/have their lives reflect their salvation. Overall, I'm disappointed in this book.I received this book in exchange for my review. My thoughts are my own.

Storytelling with Data: A Data Visualization Guide for Business Professionals, by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic

Review "In Storytelling with Data, Cole has created an of-the-moment complement to the work of data visualization pioneers like Edward Tufte. She's worked at and with some of the most data-driven organizations on the planet as well as some of the most mission-driven, data-free institutions. In both cases, she's helped sharpen their messages, and their thinking." —Laszlo Bock, SVP of People Operations, Google, Inc. and author of Work Rules!

At JPMorgan Chase, she has helped improve our capabilities to explain complicated analysis to executive management and the regulators with whom we work. Cole's book brings her talents together in an easy-to-read guide with excellent examples that anyone can learn from to encourage smarter decision-making." —Mark R. Hillis, Chief Risk Officer of Mortgage Banking at JPM Chase

"We have so much data that it can be hard to get people to pay attention to our critical findings. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic taught us valuable lessons in her workshop and it is fantastic to see these expanded upon in Storytelling with Data. My team is already using the lessons Cole teaches to move people to action as they see new pearls of understanding and make a difference in the lives of others. Now others can, too!" —Eleanor Bell, Director of Business Analytics at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

"There is something lovely about being consistent with your own teachings. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic accomplishes that with her first book. She is an advocate for clarity and concision in visualization, and her book is as clear, concise, and practical as it gets. If you are a beginner in visualization, or if you struggle to produce good charts in your everyday job with tools like Excel, Tableau, Qlik, and the like, this is a great place to start learning the core principles." —Alberto Cairo, Knight Chair in Visual Journalism and Professor of Visualization at the University of Miami, and author of The Functional Art

"Data slides are not really about the data, they are about the meaning of the data. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic understands this and has written a straightforward, accessible guide that will help anyone who communicates with data connect more effectively with their audience." —Nancy Duarte, CEO at Duarte, Inc. and bestselling author

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. a worthwhile book that does well what it tries to do By Nick Cox People wanting a basic introduction to presentation graphics would bewell served by this book by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic. Prerequisites areminimal: there is almost no mathematical content and no use of any butthe most elementary statistical methods. Knaflic's encouraging messageis that MS Excel and PowerPoint can be quite enough software for goodgraphics, but you will need to go beyond the defaults and work at thedetails.Almost all the examples are of very small datasets already to hand withtwo-way structure. 2 variables for 12 months and 5 products for 7 yearsare typical sizes. In practice when analysing data it can be hard workdeciding what methods to use and reducing a mass of raw data to aconcise summary. These steps, sometimes most of a project, are hereassumed already done. The subtitle flags a focus on "business professionals"; the contenttactfully implies junior people presenting with PowerPoint totime-challenged bosses at brief meetings. Seemingly few write reports tobe read any more, or use any other presentation software.Knaflic is excellent on the need to keep things simple. She has a goodeye and sound logic on what looks and works well and what does not.Examples show how mediocre graphs can be improved by reducing clutter, killing the key, better use of color, and similar standard tricks.Horizontal bar charts are usually more readable than vertical, and piecharts and a false third dimension are best avoided: these points havebeen well made many times, yet do deserve forceful repetition. Variouskinds of bar and line charts are her main work-horses.Sometimes the discussion seems a little contrived, as poor graphs areset up to be shot down, but that's often what convinces. Readers shouldbe on the author's side as she encourages us towards effective andtasteful graphics. Her combinations of blue for data deserving emphasisand grey for data providing context -- or of blue and orange for groupsto contrast -- are good design patterns for experienced analysts as wellas outright beginners. The closing chapters are more long-winded and repetitive, but do includesmall gems. A splendid case study on avoiding spaghetti graphics (lotsof tangled lines) stands out, and the problem and the ideas deservedmore.I always find it disappointing when datasets are fabricated orsufficiently anonymous that they might as well be. People care mostabout their own data which an author cannot provide, and confidentialityconstraints often bite, but real data examples are still generallypreferable to fake. Too many examples here are variants on Products A toE or Features A to O. Unfortunately an outrageous example of a barchart from a well-known U.S. television news network (p.50) seems alltoo real. What's not here includes Cleveland dot charts, histograms and box plotseven among the staples of good introductory statistics courses, letalone (say) use of logarithmic scale, always one of the first graphicaldevices for many sciences. So if you want something with morestatistical bite or depth, you need to look elsewhere. Naomi Robbins'excellent, no nonsense Creating more effective graphshttp://www.amazon.com/Creating-Effective-Graphs-Naomi-Robbins/dp/0985911123would enable you to go further. As in any first edition there are some small slips and exaggeratedclaims. 40% is not a majority (p.5). There is confusion between numberand percentage on p.39. Any rule that "bar charts must have a zerobaseline" (p.52) is simplistic. It is quite correct that bar chartsshould encode departures from some sensible reference level. (Thetelevision network responsible should have paid attention.) But thatreference level could easily be some value not zero, such as paritybetween men and women, or the mean of a variable, or 32 degreesFahrenheit to separate freezing and non-freezing temperatures. Idisagree that every dollar amount or percent should be labeled as such(p.90); that is repetitive clutter such as Knaflic rightly deplores. Noris it an absolute principle that every axis needs a title. If the axislabels are 2008 to 2015, no one should need "Year" to explain what ishappening. Far from being "extremely rare" (p.141), several exceptionsto that principle are included in this book!A note on style: Inside a very useful book is an even more usefulshorter book struggling to get out. For my taste, the motivationalwarm-ups and little anecdotes are often too spun-out or too trite. Goodgraphics should be presented as illustrations within a good story: a keypoint, but not one that required a long chapter with digressions on RedRiding Hood or on Aristotle on drama, or advice from a junior highschool teacher. A tighter copy-editor would have signalled that"leverage" (used as a verb about 70 times) was too much of a personalfavorite, while "de-emphasize" for "tone down", "utilize" for "use" and"incredible" for things all too credible are among several otherrepeated tics.An easy solution is to skip and skim: if a book is on graphics, you canalways just look at the graphics. In this case, Knaflic has written aworthwhile book that, small details aside, does well what it tries todo.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. This book shows what "good" data visuals look like, and explains why. By Ben Jones I highly recommend this book to anyone who uses charts and graphs to convey a data-driven message to an audience.Cole shows what clear and well-designed visualizations look like, and explains why they’re effective. She also gives sound advice on practices to avoid in most cases, such as pie charts, 3D views and dual axes. She stops a good exit short of Dogmaville, though, explaining that you should be able to give a good explanation why you’re using a challenging chart type if you decide to go that route.Well beyond merely choosing chart types, the value of this book is that you will learn how to eliminate clutter, focus attention on what matters, and de-emphasize everything else. The pages are filled with high quality before and after images that bring the subject to full color and show you what “good” looks like. She doesn’t deal with “How” from a tools perspective – her techniques and principles can be put into practice using pretty much any tool from Excel to Tableau to D3. And she doesn’t talk about “data dashboards” that are characterized by multiple charts and graphs placed side-by-side. The book deals entirely with individual visualizations and how they can be designed, annotated, and shown in sequence to tell a story and build to a coherent conclusion.I especially enjoyed chapters 7 and 8, where Cole gleans lessons from theater, cinema and fiction and then shows how they can be applied to crafting a story with data, including determining flow and storyboarding.More here: http://dataremixed.com/2015/11/book-review-storytelling-with-data/

By itself that would be good and worthy of praise. Clarity is always appreciated. But she does this by employing the skills, traits, and tricks that she so clearly explains. Cole implores the reader to eliminate clutter, visually demonstrates why it is important and its potential impact, then strips away at difficult concepts with clear and concise prose again and again. We readily grasp all this because of her use of context, visual display, simplicity, focus, design, and in so doing she tells a story about dealing with data and information, so that we can inform and not confuse. Perfect. But she achieves even more because through the use of these concepts she makes them useful for everyone and not only those dealing with large data sets; she demonstrates that which she illustrates. I'm a trial lawyer. I found her chapters on thinking like a designer and lessons in storytelling to be more than helpful. From the importance of aesthetics, audience, controlling narrative flow, to repetition she provides lessons in telling stories that can benefit anyone. Recommended for everyone!

Billionaire Cian McGregor is definitely the strong, silent type. He’s an introvert, not to the reclusive stage, but he doesn’t often seek people out. His life is a delicate balance between the Cian he shows to the world and the demon of his illness that constrains him much more than he’d like. Danica Posche, is quiet and reserved. Her calm demeanor masks a very active and intelligent mind. As an antique art dealer, Danica spends her time around old and ancient artifacts and works of amazing talent, restoring them to their former glory. When she’s commissioned to work on some pieces from the Chateau La Blanc, she couldn’t be more ecstatic, until she meets the Chateau’s owner that is.

By Rosalyn Truesdale I just love a great, well developed story line, and well, let's just be honest, I judged a book by it's cover and assumed this story line would be boring and predictable. I am humble enough to say I was wrong. I read this via kindle and was very pleased, I couldn't put it down, I read it all in one night! This book has everything one could want, from character development, to passion and suspense. The plot is very well thought out and I can't wait to read the next part in the trilogy.

Collaboration Begins with YouEveryone knows collaboration creates high performing teams and organizations—and with today's diverse, globalized workforce it's absolutely crucial. Yet it often doesn't happen because people and groups typically believe that the problem is always outside: the other team member, the other department, the other company. Bestselling author Ken Blanchard and his coauthors use Blanchard's signature business parable style to show that, in fact, if collaboration is to succeed it must begin with you. This book teaches people at all levels—from new associates to top executives—that it's up to each of us to help promote and preserve a winning culture of collaboration. The authors show that busting silos and bringing people together is an inside-out process that involves the heart (your character and intentions), the head (your beliefs and attitudes), and the hands (your actions and behaviors). Working with this three-part approach, Collaboration Begins with You helps readers develop a collaborative culture that uses differences to spur contribution and creativity; provides a safe and trusting environment; involves everyone in creating a clear sense of purpose, values, and goals; encourages people to share information; and turns everyone into an empowered self-leader. None of us is as smart as all of us. When people recognize their own erroneous beliefs regarding collaboration and work to change them, silos are broken down, failures are turned into successes, and breakthrough results are achieved at every level.

Why? Here are two of several reasons. First, bad collaboration never reaps "big" or even favorable results; worse yet, bad collaboration makes good collaboration even more difficult to plan and then achieve. With regard to "traps," Hansen identifies six in the first chapter and then suggests that there are three steps to disciplined collaboration. That is, the "the leadership practice of properly assessing when to collaborate (and when not to) and instilling in people both the willingness and the ability to collaborate when required." These are the three steps: (1) evaluate opportunities, and when making a decision, asking "Will we gain a great upside by collaborating?"; (2) identify barriers to collaboration, next asking "What are the barriers blocking people from collaborating well?"; and (3) tailor solutions to tear down the barriers, keeping in mind that different barriers require different solutions.Ken Blanchard, Jane Ripley, and Eunice Parisi-Carew use the business narrative (story format) to dramatize a number of key points. The details of the story are best revealed in the book, in context. These points include:o Personal growth and professional development are most likely to thrive in a culture of collaboration.o Mutual trust and respect are essential to effective collaboration.o There must be a shared commitment to the given objective(s) by everyone involvedo There must also be personal accountability.o Communication and cooperation must be open and transparent if collaboration is to succeed.Silos are containers that were created long ago to store grain. The word was appropriated (probably by a management consultant) to be used as an extended metaphor for hoarding information. Blanchard, Ripley, and Parisi-Carew have no quarrel with the agricultural use of silos but insist -- and I agree -- that silos in any human community cause all kinds of problems for those who reside in them as well as for those who are excluded. They explain how to "bust" a silo by changing an attitude, a mindset, and -- as is so often the case -- it begins with one's own. They include an especially valuable "Self Assessment: How Collaborative Do You Think You Are?" (Pages 137-148) so that those who read the book can look at themselves as a collaborative leader or individual contributor. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Hansen's aforementioned book as well as two others: Michael Lee Stallard's Connection Culture: The Competitive Advantage of Shared Identity, Empathy, and Understanding at Work and Team Genius: The New Science of High-Performing Organizations co-authored by Rich Karlgaard and Michael S. Malone.

I wasn't familiar going into the book with the "silo" concept (my organization uses "stovepipes") but the story and challenge that the lead character faced was very familiar to my own work environments. Organizational culture is tough to create and even tougher to reshape once it has gotten off track. Collaboration Begins With You gives enough encouragement and how to that you know that you can do it but enough realism that you know it won't happen over night and it will take considerable work. This easy read is perfect for a weekend leadership retreat. One can read and process the book in 4-5 hours and be ready to discuss and implement the principals with a leadership team ready to influence your organizations culture. This book isn't a cookie cutter technique / guilt laden book but has enough principals to craft to your own environment.I'd recommend this book for any leader who is working on making positive culture change and needs a jump start to make it happen.

By JaneAnderson After reading this book, Collaboration Begins With You: Be A Silo Buster by Ken Blanchard, Jane Ripley, and Eunice Parisi-Carew, I have a new outlook on how collaboration really lives up to its definition. Told in a refreshing style that reads like a novel, this book goes straight to the heart of the topic. Using story as the vehicle, readers have the advantage of deep learning and remember what they learned because they identify with the characters as well as the subject. To simplify what collaboration really is, the authors piece together the domains of collaboration though symbols we can easily relate to - because we all have them. Heart > Head > Hands Why is this significant? Because for true collaboration to take place, it begins inside at heart level. Collaboration is an inside-out mindset.Heart - Could it be that motives affect collaboration? Does trust enter the equation of effective collaboration? The answer. Yes, more than we might expect.Head - How many times are we asked, "What were you thinking?" The truth is, what we think colors the landscape of our attitude. Everything we know and believe affects our attitudes. Collaboration means promoting communication, involving others, getting their input, forming values and building toward common goals together.Hands - The symbol of actions and behaviors affect abilities to collaborate. We don't physically build up and tear down silos, but the things we do the acts we perform, either put up silos when we don't work together or tear them down when we share the work, trust each other, coach people, and use power discerningly. This isn't a book with heavy facts, figures, and theory. This is a story told with such conviction and believable characters, readers come away with an infusion of learnings they remember and can immediately use in their next project meeting. Collaboration is more than a team working together. Collaboration is everyone taking responsibility, everyone being all in, everyone understanding how to apply sound principles to the process and being, not just productive, but also effective. Heart > Head > Hands Using all three domains, regardless of your role, makes a difference in helping create a culture of collaboration in your organization.
