Recommended Highly By KATHI We are often indifferent to the measurable value of empowering half or more of our world's population whether we are referring to girls or women. This book attempts to change our destructive indifference with real life examples and ways for us to move forward and make a difference that can have overarching effects worldwide. This book complements Half the Sky, another compelling book on empowering women which I also reviewed. While there is some overlap, this one focuses more on women in developed countries than developing. It is a primer on how women can break that glass ceiling in business, politics, the tech field and other aspects of leadership. While Hillary Clinton's work is featured, this is NOT a book that promotes her or her politics per se. The main message of the book is when women are involved in all aspects of society including leadership, more of our collective potential is realized. The book uses anecdotes that are interesting and compelling and then shifts to models that have worked in those instances. At times the facts get dense and the narrative slows a bit, but the examples are valuable.Women in business, politics, the media and Hollywood are showcased as advancing this work. Some of the women included who have been instrumental in their fields are Laura Bush, Sandra Day O'Conner, Kate Spade, Oprah and Meryl Streep. Without women with money, access to power, or both, others will not be lifted up and along. It is a necessary collaboration because women have been shut out for so long and need the "foot in the door" to succeed. By giving examples of their successes the book illustrates how raising up women help the family, help the village and sometimes even the wider population. Interestingly there are not examples of men, who have money or are in power formally assisting in this effort through their leadership positions or their corporate access. If this is an oversight or a reality, I do not know, but if it is the latter, our battles and successes will always be hard fought and fewer without their support. One example in a developing country showcased a woman whose family came to depend on a second more steady income. The woman's talents turned into a bartering arrangement in the village for her families' food. A micro-loan to her grew this business into, not only a steady second income, but a career, helping her family and her village as she became the employer of hundreds of villagers.Another example was giving women in developing countries access to Western higher education . Upon graduating some of these women returned to these villages as doctors and other professionals, actively making a difference in their own villages. At the end of the book, the appendix was classified as a "toolkit-anecdote to action", coming full circle and showing others how to achieve what the women in the book achieved-whether the women were the role models or the beneficiaries. The book is an important first step, not to be overlooked. I recommend it highly.

The many examples of how empowering women is a win/win proposition for the woman, their families, communities and the corporations who hire them was thought prorvoking. The premise that where ever one finds oneself one can identify ways to support a greater purpose and find fulfillment in the process is inspiring. The call to connect with others is challenging because I tend to be a lone wolf (but the case is well-made that to be successful we must connect with like-minded others...and I liked that the authors are showing the way forward for a revolution with all parties holding hands and marching to the same tune.).This is above-all a call to action with a 'toolkit" to help the reader get started.

High fiber, but low in nutrients By JoAnne Goldberg Women consume more books than men do, and publishers are always looking for new material to serve those hungry readers. When the market is flooded with fashion books, romances, four friends tales, and Fifty Shades sequels, that's the signal that it's time for a new, inspiring book about women achieving success in a man's world. The publisher of Fast Forward wants you to believe that this effort could be a Lean In-like blockbuster, but Sheryl and her ghost were not only better writers, they had a vision for their book and a story to tell. Fast Forward can't figure out whether it's a compilation of every working woman anecdote ever told, a shout out to all the third world women who have created poverty-blasting solutions (recycling trash into art? How clever!), or an exhortation to apply that excess female energy to help nonprofits. You'll live longer!Hillary Rodham Clinton writes the foreword, the reader's first clue that names will be liberally dropped, often to no good effect, and that politically liberal sensibilities will rule the day.Reading this book help me understand what must be like to suffer with ADHD. The book flits from topic to topic, covering many subjects, all at bathwater depth. In one paragraph we're talking about Ada Lovelace, we jump to an unrelated middle school science project, followed by a brief interlude with Melinda Gates describing the virtues of all-girl schools, and then an anecdote about a dean who transformed a male science-oriented school into one that is hospitable to girls. If you adore platitudes and gasp in wonder at bold and magnificent statements like "women are one of the most powerful demographic groups the world has ever seen," you may find this book inspiring. If you have ever read an article or blog post about managing your career, you are unlikely to obtain additional enlightenment.
