“I would prefer not to.” --- Herman Melville, Bartleby, the Scrivener “Ah, happiness courts the light so we deem the world is gay. But misery hides aloof so we deem that misery there is none.” --- Herman Melville, Bartleby, the Scrivener "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" (1853) is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized anonymously in two parts in the November and December editions of Putnam's Magazine, and reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856. Numerous essays are published on what according to scholar Robert Milder "is unquestionably the masterpiece of the short fiction" in the Melville canon. Reception Though no great success at the time of publication, "Bartleby the Scrivener" is now among the most noted of American short stories. It has been considered a precursor of absurdist literature, touching on several of Franz Kafka's themes in such works as "A Hunger Artist" and The Trial. There is nothing to indicate that the Bohemian writer was at all acquainted with the work of Melville, who remained largely forgotten until some time after Kafka's death. Albert Camus, in a personal letter to Liselotte Dieckmann published in The French Review in 1998, cites Melville as a key influence.

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street, by Herman Melville

Review ''Herman Melville is one of American literature's greatest figures.'' --The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English

About the Author Herman Melville (1819 - 1891) Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, became a bestseller), but after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime.

The novella is available for purchase in several book formats, some of which contain excellent critical essays on this important American author and his work. This Kindle edition contains only the text of the novella, but it is free and that's great."Bartleby the Scrivener" is a very accessible short novella by the author of "Moby Dick." It tells the story of a strange young man named Bartleby who shows up one morning at a New York law firm and is employed as a copyist (scrivener.) In those days (mid-nineteenth century), legal work was horrendously tedious for the clerks since huge briefs and depositions had to be copied by hand by men who did nothing all day but write a clear hand (and try not to leave ink blots on the paper,) and then check their work by reading it aloud back to each other. This is one of my favorite novellas (really a long short story). Wittily narrated by the harassed lawyer who owns the law firm, it describes the characters of those copyists who are employed there, and tells of the strange Bartleby who just decides to stop doing any work one day, telling his exasperated employer that he "prefers not to."The story is a wonderful mixture of high comedy, pathos and fascinating commentary on the human condition. I re-read it at least once a year, and I always enjoy it and get something fresh from Melville's wise insights and his wonderful wit.Highly recommended.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. A Literary Innovation: the Clueless Narrator By Gio "Bartleby" is strictly speaking just a magazine sketch, one of a batch of informal sketches from magazines reprinted together as The Piazza Tales. It has the format of a memoir of an eccentric character, Bartleby, as told by a nameless first-person narrator, "an eminently safe man" by his own account, a lawyer who earns his living through the most mundane, routine legal paperwork, who also complains that 'reformers' have deprived him of his lucrative sinecure in state government. "I am a man who, from his youth upwards, has ben filled with a profound conviction that the easiest way of life is the best," he says of himself. In short, in this "Story of Wall Street", he is a drone, a financial parasite, and he would have been recognized as such by Melville's readership in the 1850s, a era when Wall Street was regarded with as much suspicious as in 2009. He is also a smug, sanctimonious, cautious man, irritably comfortable to exploit the labor of his copyists, one of whom is an impaired alcoholic and the other perhaps a pre-medication psychotic. When the third impaired eccentric, Bartleby, joins the staff, our Narrator is readily 'generous' in tolerating him as long as he can make a dime. It seems to me fairly obvious that we readers are supposed to treat the Narrator with distrust, perhaps even dislike.Melville wrote at the beginning of the now-established literary tradition of the 'unreliable narrator', supplanting the omniscient narrator of the majority of 19th C novels. But Melville transcends that tradition in his first effort, giving us a 'clueless' narrator, an observer who is honest only in his acknowledgement of his complete non-understanding of his subject. To accept the Narrator's analysis of Bartleby would be a fatal error of readerly judgement. Whatever Melville's subtext in this story -- whatever Melville wants to tell us -- that Narrator is the one person who can't possibly be expected to comprehend it.Melville also wrote at the end of the ancient tradition of 'allegory.' His only literary peer and friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne, was the grand master of slyly allegorical short tales, and it makes sense to examine Bartleby as a specimen of the allegorical genre. Thus we need to ask who the Narrator figures for, and who the Scrivener, and then what it is, really, that Bartleby "prefers" not to participate in. My interpretation is that N represents the entire commercial/financial culture of 19th C America, while Bartleby embodies all those who are aliens within that system, first by necessity and then by bitter choice. Bartleby, in effect, prefers not to be a link in that chain, a cog in that machine.Another school of literary criticism would examine Melville's personal life for clues of his authorial intentions. It's widely known that Melville was finding his inability to "make a decent living and support his family" both frustrating and frightening during the decade after the commercial failure of Moby Dick. In fact, Melville found himself on the verge of becoming a patronage drone, a place-holder in the New York Customs Office. It may be important to realize that Melville's father-in-law, Justice Lemuel Shaw of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, was both an extremely powerful man in America at the time, and a man of energetic personal forcefulness. It's hard to believe that Melville was not intimidated and oppressed by Shaw, yet no more able to make a case for himself than poor Bartleby.I'm just tossing off suggestions here, my friends. Bartleby is an enigma wrapped in complexity, and no final interpretation would stand up to a second reading. When I first read it, in the 1960s, it was still neglected and overshadowed among Melville's works by "Billy Budd". It's been interesting to watch the emergence of recognition among readers that Bartleby is one of the greatest short masterpieces of the English language. One thing more to say about Bartleby is that it's marvelously funny. It's Herman Melville's best assimiliation of the ludricrous style of Charles Dickens and other Victorian writers. The first dozen pages, before the appearance of Bartleby, are devoted to comedy in the form of exaggerated portrayals of the three hapless employees of the nameless narrator. Each of these comic-relief figures will be brought back into service at intervals in the subsequent tale. It's supremely important, dear reader, to recognize Melville's sardonic humor; other reviewers who rated Bartleby at two stars or less clearly "didn't get the joke."

Seemingly simple story about the choices we make daily By Linda Linguvic Herman Melville wrote this story in 1853, two years after Moby Dick had been published and his writing career was beginning to lose its luster. Subtitled, "A Story of Wall Street", it is a seemingly simple story about a lawyer who hires a gentleman named Bartleby as a scrivener in his office. This was way back in the days before photocopy machines and scriveners performed the necessary tasks of tediously hand copying documents over and over. Bartleby was good at the copying part of his job, but when asked to proofread aloud one day he simply replied, "I prefer not to." From that moment forward, he used the phrase "I prefer not to" for every task requested of him, eventually "preferring not to" do any work whatsoever. The lawyer, who is astounded by Bartleby's attitude, tells the story in the first person. The story is rich in language and yet spare in actual action. The reader is forced to think, and think seriously about the choices we make daily. Bartleby chose to rebel and become an anti-hero. But the real protagonist of the story is the lawyer, who is drawn into Bartleby's power and grows to admire him. The conclusion is sad, but inevitable. Recommended.

It may take some time to figure this out, as you hear voices from nowhere, or see shadows lurking around with no explanation, maybe there are spirits that didn't cross over or lost. In this book many questions will be answered. What happens the moment we die? Is there a light? Are angels and demons real? Is Lucifer real, can he appear? I collected the stories of spirits in my house and they explain exactly how they died and their personal experience, age, name, and year that they passed on. I also interviewed demons, angels, and yes, Lucifer, all real true stories, that I am sure you would love to read. This is a must read book that you just can't avoid to pick up.

From the Author I spent over a year writing this book, collecting stories from spirits with a medium. I enjoyed writing about the paranormal and learning along the way what happened after we die. I also learned about other entities and what they do. Angles that are around us and in Heaven and Fallen Angels that are still here on earth. It's a lot of information that is exciting to learn about. I am sure you will enjoy book as much as I did writing it. Thank you.

Interesting Fiction By Skip Gibson Author attempts to pass off obvious fictional "haunted" house where he manages to meet with souls of the dead including Michael Jackson, Satan and Greek Gods. Would be better if Author didn't attempt to pass off this interesting book as nonfiction while it is obviously his day dreams.

These spirits did not choose to go to the light and they give detailed information about their deaths, current state and the reasons they chose to remain earthbound. This book gives a perspective like none other. It answers questions that you never even thought to ask. The author gives the utmost respect to the dead. John Milton is regarded as the greatest English poet after Shakespeare. Yet for sublimity and philosophical grandeur, Milton stands almost alone in world literature. His peers are Homer, Virgil, Dante, Wordsworth, and Goethe: poets who achieve a total ethical and spiritual vision of the world. In this panoramic interpretation, the distinguished Milton scholar Gordon Teskey shows how the poet’s changing commitments are subordinated to an aesthetic that joins beauty to truth and value to ethics. The art of poetry is rediscovered by Milton as a way of thinking in the world as it is, and for the world as it can be.

Milton’s early poems include the heroic Nativity Ode; the seductive paired poems “L’Allegro” and “Il Penseroso”; the mythological pageant Comus, with its comically diabolical enchanter and its serious debate on the human use of nature; and “Lycidas,” perhaps the greatest short poem in English and a prophecy of vast human displacements in the modern world. Teskey follows Milton’s creative development in three phases, from the idealistic transcendence of the poems written in his twenties to the political engagement of the gritty, hard-hitting poems of his middle years. The third phase is that of “transcendental engagement,” in the heaven-storming epic Paradise Lost, and the great works that followed it: the intense intellectual debate Paradise Regained, and the tragedy Samson Agonistes.

The Poetry of John Milton, by Gordon Teskey

Review Every so often a critical book comes along that is so intelligent, so full in its range of treatment, so just in its moral and human judgments, that praise can't begin to do justice to it. Such is Gordon Teskey’s book on Milton’s poetry…[It] is wholly available to anyone who has been or wants to be a student―that is a reader―of Milton’s poems…Not to be missed by anyone who aspires to be a better reader of Milton, especially of Paradise Lost. (William H. Pritchard Hudson Review 2016-02-01)A major new response to the poetry…Throughout his study, Teskey displays his own erudition with a light hand. He illustrates how classical, mythological, historical and Scriptural resonances are significant and functional in Milton, but never lets them clog the poem under discussion…Teskey is clear that Milton spent his life urging his readers to reimagine their world. Teskey’s approach to this life is compendious and in careful touch with recent Milton scholarship. His book is like a Renaissance commentary, long-meditated and expansive. There is a close and delicate attention to the historical and biographical frames of individual poems, which in turn prompt and inform rich formal analysis and interpretation. We also get Milton’s theme as they are caught and refracted through later texts: there are countless fine aside on writers ranging from Heidegger to Larkin…It is superbly balanced in appreciation of both the language of the poetry and its moral arguments…Milton sought ever more ambitious ways of bringing his readers to reconsider their position in history and to think of ways of changing it. The means he used to provoke such wondering are considered beautifully and extensively in The Poetry of John Milton. (John Stubbs Literary Review 2015-09-01)The pleasure of reading Milton is something that Teskey conveys with abundant ease in this major guide to the poetry, from Lycidas to Samson Agonistes…Teskey’s treatment of On the Late Massacre in Piedmont is a model of the kind of close criticism he executes so well [and]…he is impressively attentive to the language, sources and afterlife of the poem. There is sensitivity and subtlety here that made me return to the poem and scan it anew…I was reminded of just how rich Milton’s poetry is. (Willy Maley Times Higher Education 2015-07-16)Gordon Teskey has lavished a life in scholarship on one poet. The Poetry of John Milton is a long book, but only just big enough to hold its wealth of commentary. It is an exercise in a pure kind of literary criticism, beholden to no particular ideology, bringing in biographical and social details only where strictly necessary, dwelling rather on matters of meaning and form, influence and reception, than character and event…It offers a compelling total interpretation of the work of one of our greatest poets. (Robert Minto Open Letters Monthly 2015-08-01)His prose style, with its engaging first-person voice and the wide variety of literature and other topics Teskey draws on, is one of the pleasures of this informative, intelligent, and accessible book. (B. E. Brandt Choice 2015-11-01)Teskey makes criticism feel again like an activity which is one of the highest and most necessary activities of the mind. With a confidence and command whose like one can scarcely meet elsewhere, Teskey revives for us in its full strength and serenity a practice of thinking and writing which one had feared irretrievably lost to the philological arachnids. It will be a central summit of the literature on Milton and on poetry for many, many years to come―a summit on a range which it will itself play no small part in continuing to keep upright. (Simon Jarvis, University of Cambridge)Gordon Teskey’s study of Milton is a capacious, extremely well-judged statement that takes the reader across the full range of the poet’s poetry, including the shorter verse produced during the revolutionary years. I enjoyed greatly the comparing of Milton with other key works of European literature from different periods. Teskey also accounts for Milton as poet of the English Revolution, yet we feel by the end that the critic too has revealed himself as artist, and that the reading itself has declared its own liberating power. This book has that kind of aesthetic energy. (Nigel Smith, Princeton University)

About the Author Gordon Teskey is Professor of English, Harvard University, and editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Milton’s Paradise Lost.

If you're into dystopian world's, this is for you.Glenn James take on this is different than other authors and Definitely better. He's got fewer characters and they are much more developed. You feel like you know them and want to know what is going happen next. I can't wait for number five!I received an ARC of this from the author. I was asked to give an honest review. IT'S GREAT!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I've enjoyed every layer that Glynn has written into the series By D.H. Still trying to figure out ultimately where the plot will lead to. So far, I've enjoyed every layer that Glynn has written into the series. Each new addition provides another layer onto a deeply complex plot that should lead to a satisfying ending. some of the plot elements are slightly forced to bring to two main characters together again, but it would not be a story without the two reuniting at some point.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wow!! What a great story! By Paula K. Taylor I absolutely love this series! The world of Jack Avery becomes more complex and interesting with each installment. Glynn James has a great imagination and is a fantastic story teller. I recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of dystopian society stories or sci-fi. I received this book at no charge in exchange for a review but I would gladly have paid for it!

This is a short story, and not even that, because it has no proper stucture. The author wrote a complete book and then just put the first three chapters together and passed them as a complete work.* sigh* It could have been worst, I only wasted one opportunity of reading a good book; I could have lost my money.About the contents, don't bother with this book, as it is so plain and grey and dull. I won't even bother to look for the rest of the chapters, obviously .

A story of love and bravery with drama and suspense. The problem faced by the Sylvain is still the main problem in our present society. and i just love the character of king Rainstaff and her wive, and the character of sylvain is very noticeable. A very special love story with a lot of twists, i really love it. how author put all the characters in the story is just amazing. Must read book, you will never regret after reading the book. loved it

Very vague read and ends too abrubtly By hollieanne This book was only 52 pages long, so I didn't expect much as far as depth, but I still managed to find it disappointing. The heroine barely spoke in the entire 50+ pages (she literally only spoke a few words). Very little seemed to happen, and as soon something of relevance did occur, the book just ends. I didn't go into this expecting it to be a "serial" type of read and I'm not a fan of those. Needless to say this wont be a series I continue.

When I'm looking around for what to buy, I'm looking for something that will help me, (selfish, I guess), wring a few blessed bucks out of the writing game, and more so how to get more mileage out of the selling game. There's certainly some actionable stuff here. This helped me understand the workings of Twitter a little better. Thanks; #itsallgood.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. I have never seen a reasonably good all-round performance of grand opera. Nevertheless, though not a melomaniac, I am extremely fond of grand opera, and have seen it in the following cities: Antwerp, Brussels, Florence, Ghent, Hanley, Lisbon, London, Milan, New York, Paris, Ostend, Philadelphia, Rome, San Remo, and others which I cannot recall. If operatic performances succeed in several particulars, as they sometimes do—though rarely in more than one—they always fail in at least one particular, generally in several, sometimes in all. The best show I ever saw anywhere on the operatic stage was a performance of Le Mariage de Figaro in English at Drury Lane under Sir Thomas Beecham. The production had been superintended by Nigel Playfair. The translation was quite neat, and often very witty indeed. The acting was good. There was an ensemble. The scenery was not really good, but it was so immensely better than ordinary scenery in world-renowned opera-houses that it gave the illusion of being good. I was as well satisfied by this affair as by a faulty performance of Strauss's absolutely enchanting Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden: which is saying a great deal. It would be impossible for me to decide which was the worst show I ever saw—the choice would be too embarrassing. But it occurred certainly in either Paris, Milan, or London. I know that after a performance of Siegfried, at the Paris Opera House I took an oath never again to enter the Paris Opera House.

Things that have Interested Me, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. no title By C. L Wilson Lots of short essays on all kinds of things. Boy! was he wrong about James Joyce and "Ulysses". Very interesting and at times highly amusing. He says a woman who dresses well should be considered an artist just as much as a painter or musician, for she pleases the eye every day. Memorable for his descriptions of tours of Portugal in February and southern France in September. Would like to do these trips some day. He was really in the hinterland of France. Also interesting is what he has to say about girls after the Great War, and games. Pertinent to the U.S. today. Sort've reminds me of George Jean Nathan, just a little lighter and fluffier. Not quite as biting or wise. Very astute remarks about our judicial system's "guilty until proved innocent" or otherwise.

Christians are called to bear a cross. These crosses sometimes involve the general burdens that affect everyone. At other times Christians bear specific burdens. The Lord promises us that our crosses and burdens can be transformed into small splinters if we focus on what really matters. How can this happen? You will find the answer in Splinters of the Cross … the same answer that was found by Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Peter, Paul, and many more: God's grace is sufficient for you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good thoughts on many topics By JFerrell I was a little challenged by some of the ideology that transpires in Michael's writing. No doubt, he thought from the heart and much of this book shows that. The reason for the three star review is that a lot of the passages are quoted from the paraphrased "Message." This translation takes a lot of liberties in changing both word and thought. For example, Paul's "thorn" called a handicap. I cannot find that it was a handicap in all of my studies. Maybe it was the pain of the sin in his former life? Maybe a sexual desire, such as Michael alludes to here?Very easy read overall. Recommend reading for yourself to understand the "splinters" of life while thinking about the "splinters of the cross."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Passionate But Lacking By Aidan Rogers The book is passionately written; you can hear the yearning in the author's voice for God. In fact, through the first several chapters, I thoroughly enjoyed the reading. However, about midway through, the errors became glaring. This book is neither Biblically nor logically sound, although he writes as though you should believe it is. He picks verses that support his ideology while ignoring other verses in the Bible, does not have all of his definitions quite right, and leans on logical fallacy to make you think you're wrong. Sorry, but I don't buy it.That said, I still like the book. Were it not for the Biblical errors, I would have rated it higher. It's a good read, enjoyable, passionate, as I've said. But take it with a grain of salt. Let this be the starting point of your journey into God's truth rather than a shortcut. Let it throw you into God's Word to see what God says, and you'll be okay. The concept is there. The heart is there. Just don't get too tied up in the details of this particular theology. And I say that with grace to my brother, because I am of the same background he is and have, at times in my life, made the same errors.*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*

The book is intended for those people who are already believers in Christ, and probably targeted towards Generation Y readers. Each chapter describes Biblical scenes in a modern narrative to appeal to a younger generation. There doesn't seem to be a central theme that connects all the chapters together; and he does in fact call the book "a collection of my ramblings" in the introduction. The subject matter jumps from clapping, to baptism, to virginity, to blood. There are a few statements that I'm sure will step on the toes of members of some contemporary mega-churches. However, he does back up these statements with scripture and it is these contentious statements that I appreciate the most; especially the ones I had never thought about before.I received this eBook for free in exchange for an honest review via StoryCartel.com

Abraham ventures into the desert with his son Isaac to offer up a horrible sacrifice to the God he hears commanding him, and he is stopped by an Angel. But, it turns out, things are quite a bit different from the Bible story we learned about in Sunday School. Will we ever look at the biblical Abraham in quite the same way again?

Magical By Amazon Customer Man, this is exactly what believers need to consider: what if YOU were in Abraham's shoes; would YOU kill your child for your God? That's what this little book viscerally tries (and does) pose to the reader: if YOU were asked to kill your offspring for GOD today- June 24th, 2015, would YOU do it? If you're a believe, and you and you answered no- why not?

The enhancement of the original biblical telling is deft and engrossing; the twist worthy of Rod Serling, himself, as well as appropriately thought-provoking.Thanks to them both for a most excellent adventure!
