Upended and if nothing more, I wanted to find out what that was all about. It ended up being a really great insightful story. Another one is pretty comical, titled, Follow These Simple Instructions. It was about a hairy guy who didn't like being hairy. Funny! Each of the stories have their own special charm and I enjoyed them all..

By Matt Jeff Stoker's new book, SLANT RHYME, contains ten remarkable short stories that, as you read them, will bring to mind such noteworthy names as Chuck Palahniuk, Raymond Carver, David Lynch, and Charlie Kaufman. Full of sexual perversity, neurosis of the highest levels, sly humor, and a truly unique view of society.Of the stories, it is incredibly difficult for me to pick a favorite, but pick a favorite I will do.While FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS offers the most laughs, and A.P. UPENDED appeals to my creepy weirdo side, I'd have to claim SOMETHING FOR NOTHING as my overall favorite. The problem with reviewing a story like SOMETHING FOR NOTHING is that..well, even explaining why it is difficult to review this story could require a spoiler alert.I'll just say this...the writing in the story is so subtle, and clever, that there is a very good possibility you will want to reread it immediately to figure out what you missed. Once you do, you'll realize that everything fits, everything makes sense, and it's really quite brilliant. So, while I have listed a few of my favorites, believe me, the entire book is excellent and if you've ever felt like an outsider, or an oddball, this book is for you.

Author Jeffrey Stoker is not afraid to take his stories and characters into places so emotionally charged that most of us would be too afraid to have that part of ourselves laid bare.My favorite of this collection is “Follow These Simple Instructions” where, in a mostly autobiographical telling, Stoker recounts the night he attempts to wax his back with such honesty, hilarity and emotion that I found myself both laughing and emotionally aching for him.Jeffrey Stoker has done an amazing job of putting together a collection of stories that will leave you questioning his sanity and asking where you can find more of his writing.

One curvaceous leopard shifter + two hunky co-alphas + one unexpected heat = a fiery-hot MFM menage! Strange things are happening to Ceecee. The young leopard shifter's clothes feel too tight, her panties are constantly wet... and her knees go weak any time she goes near the co-alphas. The alphas' full-figured assistant doesn't understand what's going on. She's always been attracted to her two bosses, but now things are different. Why does handsome, kind Stanley suddenly have her swooning? Why does majestic, unapproachable Dane turn her into a pile of mush? And why does the pressure between her plump thighs get so unbearably high when she's with both of them together? Sudden Heat is the first part of the Fur the Moment trilogy. Parts 2 and 3 are available now. Due to Kindle-scorching levels of sexiness, this hard-to-put-down paranormal menage romance is recommended for mature audiences only.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Vapid and Awkward By Dewsterling It's incomprehensible when authors equate their own genre, romance, with stupidity. The vapid heroine goes into 'heat', essentially getting her period as awkwardly described by the author as "finally becoming a woman now", but has never heard of such a thing despite being a born shifter. She is in such physical distress that she literally cannot walk and repeatedly passes out, but goes to work anyway. Why? The author doesn't bother to explain, then the character proceeds to have horrifying and repetitive conversations about her heat with her bosses. She then continues to return to work day after day even though she is ill and doesn't actually do any work, she just takes selfies for her Instagram because she wants to be a model. The conflict of the three books centers around her sister's visit and an accidental kitchen fire that makes no sense whatsoever and comes completely out of left field. Ruby Glass could have done any research, a single Google search, and would have discovered that 2nd degree burns are typically partial-thickness burns resulting in blisters and do not require complete facial graft reconstruction surgery.

Ceecee doesn't know what is going on with her body, thinks maybe she is just sick. Yup, until she runs into one of her bosses and then her body explodes with heat. Oh and it is just as bad when her other boss comes to her. Her mother failed to explaing some things to her, such as being in heat and it get worse when around your mate or mates or heck, even thinking about them.Be prepared for a very nice cliffhanger.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

It introduces us to the story of Ceecee, Dane and Stanley.Ceecee is a curvy shifter who wants to be a model, but for now she is working for the towns 2 alphas Dane and Stanley. She has always been attracted to the alphas but now suddenly the attraction has gotten out of hand with the intensity of her desires for them. Unknown to Ceecee she has gone in heat but has no clue what is it is or what is going on with her body. She knows only that when ever Dane or Stanley are around her it's all she can do not to jump them. When she over hears them having a conversation about her being their mate things really start getting interesting for Ceecee. This book is fun and will make you laugh. I love how totally clueless she is to everything. Dane and Stanley sounds hot and sexy as heck. the only gripeI had with the book would have to be Stanley's name. It's such an old name. And I'm sure I'm not he only one who pictures a nerdy, odd, weak guy with glasses and thinning hair with a seriously bad come over, when they think of someone with that name. LOLI really enjoyed this book and feel you would also. So BUY THE BOOK : ) it will make your brain happy.Received ARC copyL.

A bewitching collection of short fiction-haunting and hypnotic meditations on art, movies, literature, and life

A circus elephant named Topsy was executed at Coney Island in the year 1900 for killing a man. That's true. So is the life of Saartjie (Sar-key) Baartman, the Hottentot Venus, who was herself a circus act in the first half of the nineteenth century. What is myth is the Indian god Ganesha, whose head was lopped off by his father, Shiva, and replaced-with an elephant's head-by his disconsolate mother, Parvati. In John Haskell's expert hands, these three curious strands are ingeniously woven together in one story called "Elephant Feelings."

And so it goes with the rest of these dreamy meditations on the lives of artists, actors, writers, and musicians who are at once painfully human and larger than life. In "Dream of a Clean Slate," Jackson Pollock the man struggles with the separation he feels from Jackson Pollock the artist; in "The Judgment of Psycho," Haskell probes the sexual dynamic of Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins in Psycho, and then delves into a different relationship, the one between Hector and Paris in the Iliad; Orson Welles presides over the long story "Crimes at Midnight," a tense evocation of desire and its consequences. Haskell has written a series of myths for modern times, stories about the ways in which we are distant from ourselves and about the way art can sometimes help us imagine other worlds and other possibilities. It is an astonishing debut.

I Am Not Jackson Pollock: Stories, by John Haskell

From Publishers Weekly Haskell evades definition in his audacious debut collection, creating an innovative blend of fact and fiction and deliberately eliding the difference between them. Most of the nine stories are imaginative extrapolations of the lives of real people (or, in some cases, real animals), such as the eponymous painter and his wife, Lee Krasner; Psycho stars Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins; Laika, the first dog in space; and Saartjie, the early 19th-century South African woman brought to London as the famous sideshow attraction the Hottentot Venus. Haskell mixes anecdotes from the lives of these artists and celebrities with fictitious events to compose deceptively simple vignettes in which he distills and clarifies moments of intense psychological struggle. Jackson Pollock sees a beautiful woman as he enters a bar in "Dream of a Clean Slate," "but he was feeling a thing he called nervousness, a feeling in his body that he didn't like, so he stopped at the bar for a drink, a whiskey... part of him--his desire-goes to the girl, and the rest of him stays at the bar, drinking and trembling." In "The Faces of Joan of Arc," Mercedes McCambridge, the voice of the devil in The Exorcist, tries vainly to stop drinking; actress Renee Falconetti tries to understand her role as the title character in The Passion of Joan of Arc; and an aging Hedy Lamarr shoplifts a tawdry department store dress. "Elephant Feelings" weaves together the stories of the Hottentot Venus; Topsy, the elephant whose electrocution was famously captured on film in the 1900s; and the Indian god Ganesh, half man, half elephant. Betrayal and humiliation, coupled with an inability to communicate, drives all three to acts of violent rage. Haskell subtly explores questions of exploitation and agency through the eyes of his celebrity characters, winking all the while at his own attempts to get into their heads. His hypnotic writing creates its own genre, unsettling and quietly bizarre. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Jackson Pollack created images of passion and mystery and sparked a new fervor for abstraction in the art world. Similarly, Haskell's collection of stories--not quite fiction, not always true--equally tells of passions, mystery, and abstraction. He takes real-life situations: Pollack himself trying to separate the man from the artist in "Dream of a Clean Slate"; the infamous Coney Island man-killing elephant, Topsy, in the year 1900 and the fabled Hottentot Venus, an African woman whose body was a Parisian circus spectacle, both seek the true love of a man in "Elephant Feelings"; Janet Leigh's character in Psycho and her relationship with Anthony Perkins' character is analyzed and romanticized in "The Judgment of Psycho"; Glenn Gould's hypochondria is examined in "Glenn Gould in Six Parts"; and the tribulations of Laika, the Russian dog that was the first animal in space, are addressed in "Good World." These are just a few of the wonderful, quirky, even extraordinary tales that intersperse Hollywood gossip with plumbing the depths of the human spirit. Why would anyone who read it call it "senseless" - ? That reader really missed the mark. This is fascinating writing - the author is a master at seeing similarities between things which, on the surface, are dissimilar. From high culture to low, Haskell brings it all together into one frame. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone interested in ficition that isn't dead in the water. If you're tired of formulaic writing, this one will wake you up. This is infused with motion and risk. A lovely book, my favorite of many read in the last year.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Terrific premise with very good execution. By Benjamin John Haskell's first short story collection takes key figures from history, identifies them at defining moments in their existence and builds a story around them to explain their significance. It's an interesting take on the short story, which some say is a dying art, and Haskell does good work, for the most part. His premise, though, turns the "stories" into more analysis of moment than a narrative. Occasionally, the stories become bogged down and feel like essays, though this is itself is intellectually stimulating. He gives the reader a look inside Jackson Pollock's head in one piece, granting you the opportunity to follow Pollock's reasoning. In "Elephant Feelings," the best of the stories, Haskell takes three figures from culture and history and draws parallels between them. (It feels like a shorter version of "The Hours," even, except with mythical characters and an elephant playing the Virginia Woolf part.) But not enough is done with the premise, in my opinion. As with all the stories, I felt like the characters and moments were well-drawn. But, to justify going into all this detail, I wished it'd featured less analysis and more plot.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Vagaries in the search of reality By Grady Harp John Haskell is a writer new to the reading (though not the performing) world and his voice is one that stirs interest, primarily because it is unique. He tells these nine 'short stories' - they seem more like extended meditations or themes and fugues - in a manner that combines known public figures (a particular penchant for old movie stars and old movies) with imaginary cast members to explore the thin line of reality vs fiction. He makes bizarre choices in combining such people as Orson Welles, Joseph Coton, Falstaff, Prince Hal and Janet Leigh to ponder self perception:"...once we think we know who we are, to change who we are means giving up what we love, even if we hate it." The haiku poet Basho is intertwined with thoughts about John Keats; Keats falls short of relating to Fanny Brawne until he faces his moment of death; Basho confesses he "...wants to find beauty and harmony, but something is always distracting him - people usually - pulling him off the road." Mercedes McCambridge, the devil voice of Linda Blair in "The Exorcist", struggles with alcoholism, Joan of Arc is recallled historically and through the various guises of the actress who portrayed her in the film. Sound confusing? Well it is, and sometimes the obtuseness of Haskell's technique borders on not the absurd, but the senseless. I think we're seeing the early work of a mind that is rich in fluid imagination. I feel as though this author has a lot to say but is hiding behind the likes of Jackson Pollock and Joan of Arc and Ganesha for fear of not being noticed. I don't think he needs this gimmick and I eagerly await his next novel. He WILL be noticed on his own rights.

A slice of time to make the shift from Lee Bannister, ex-con, to Lee Bannister—wayward son coming home. And he knew exactly where to get it.Lee feathered the brakes of his pickup as his eyes scanned the ditch to his right. It had been years since he was in this part of Montana, but when he rounded another curve, he saw the grass-covered approach he'd been looking for. Coming to a full stop, he could just make out the twin tracks of a road heading through a break in the trees. He parked his truck, two wheels well into the ditch so that any motorist cresting the hill could easily pass it.Once he stepped out, he took a moment to appreciate the warm summer sun beating down on his head, the melody of the blackbirds twittering in the aspen trees. The air held the tang of pine and warm grass and he let it seep through him as he walked the overgrown trail. Every muffled fall of his boots on the grass eased away the clang and clamor of rig work that surrounded him every waking hour.He ducked, brushing aside a branch that almost slapped him in the face, looking forward to the solitude and the view at the end of the trail. Few people knew about the lookout point he was headed to. Only his sisters and his parents and a couple of the guys Lee had partied with in high school.Lee pushed the thought back. Though he knew other bits of history would crowd in on his consciousness during this trip back to the ranch, he intended not to jog too many memories of the past while he was here. He had come to help his sister celebrate her wedding and his parents commemorate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the ranch. And that was it. He had no desire to reminisce about the good old days with any of his friends. He stepped over a fallen tree and skirted another tangle of small brush. A few more steps and he stopped, breathing deeply. It was as if the world had fallen away below his feet.Granite mountains, solid and stately, their jagged peaks still etched with winter snow, cradled the basin below him, simultaneously creating a majesty and a sense of security. The Saddle River unspooled below him, a winding ribbon of silver meandering through the valley as poplar and spruce trees crowded its banks. To his left lay the town of Saddlebank, its streets dotted with trees and paralleling the railroad that followed the river. From here he could make out Main Street with its brick buildings and, in the dead center of town, Mercy Park with its requisite memorial and gazebo. Past the park and above the trees, he could see the steeple of Saddle Community Church to one side, the cross and bell of the Catholic church on the other. Beyond Saddlebank and to his right, the rest of the valley was taken up with ranches—one of which, Refuge Ranch, was his final destination. But not yet.Lee drew another long, slow breath, letting the utter peace and splendor of the view feed his wounded and weary soul."Then sings my soul," he whispered, lowering himself to a large rock worn smooth by the winds that could bluster through the valley. The words of an old hymn that his father would sing when they were outside, working on the ranch, returned. He let his mind sift back, let the recollections he struggled so hard to keep at bay wash over him.In prison, the memories had hurt too much. The contrast between the confines of a drab cell and the mind-numbing routine, to this space and emptiness and peace hurt too much, so he kept the disparate parts of his life compartmentalized in order to survive. Now he'd been out for five years and he still never took for granted the ability to go to bed when he wanted. Get up when he wanted. Eat what he wanted and do what he wanted when work was over.Lee sighed. He knew coming back here would be bittersweet. It would be both a reminder of what he'd lost because of his irresponsibility, but also a reminder of what had always been available to him. Family, community and the unconditional love of his parents and, most important, his sustaining relationship with God.He let his eyes drift over a view that he had, for so many years, considered home. His soul grew still as the view filled an emptiness that had haunted him for so long. Then a rustle in the branches of the large pine tree behind him caught his attention. He cocked his head, listening as he slowly turned. Something large was hiding in the branches above him. Black bear, or worse, a cougar?Heart pounding, he thumbed his cowboy hat back on his head, scanning the tree, planning what to do. Run? Stay and stand down whatever wild animal was perched in the tree? Then he heard a cough just as a backpack fell with a thump to the ground in front of him, followed by an angry exclamation."Who's there?" he called out, still feeling that intense jolt of adrenaline surging through his veins."Just me," a female voice returned. The branches rustled again and Lee caught sight of a pair of feet in sandals searching for a branch. Then he saw legs scrabbling for purchase, hands flailing.A cry of dismay pierced the air and Lee ran closer just as a woman plummeted out of the tree.He caught her, but they were a tangle of legs and arms as they tumbled to the ground, breaking her fall. A camera, hanging around her neck, swung around and cracked him on the head. They lay like that a moment as Lee's ears rang and his head throbbed from the impact of the camera. Finally the woman pushed herself away from him and scrambled to her feet.Lee blinked as he tried to orient himself. He slowly stood frowning at the woman in front of him, who seemed more concerned about her camera than herself, or him, for that matter. Her hair was tucked up in a ball cap, and a large pair of sunglasses was perched on a nose sprinkled with freckles. She wore khaki shorts, a white tank top now smeared with dirt and a brown vest with numerous zipped and buttoned pockets. She pulled a cloth out of one of them and was wiping down the body of her camera. The woman looked familiar, but he couldn't immediately place her."Everything okay?" he asked, gingerly touching his forehead. His hand came away tinged with blood, so he pulled a handkerchief out of the back pocket of his blue jeans and dabbed at it."I think so," she murmured, tucking the cloth in her chest pocket. "The body looks good, but I'll have to check the inside later.""I meant with you."She finally looked up at him and lifted her chin in a defensive move. "Yeah. Sorry about that. I'm fine." She cleared her throat. "You didn't need to catch me, you know. I would have been okay. Are you okay?""You might have broken a leg," he returned, the sharp pain in his head settling in to a dull ache as he ignored her question. He gestured toward a long red scrape on the inside of her wrist. "You might want to get that looked at, as well. You don't want it to get infected."She lifted her arm and gave it a cursory glance. "It's fine." She looked back at him. "Looks like you got a nasty cut on your head, though.""It's fine too.""Awesome. Blood's streaming down your face, I've got a scrape that is just starting to hurt…but we're both okay." She waggled her fingers as if to make sure they were still functioning, and then she gave him a selfdeprecating smile. "Again, sorry about that. I should have been more careful—and I wasn't very grateful for your help.""Apology accepted." Lee returned her look for look, his own brain trying to place her familiarly beautiful features, or what he could see of her face, half-hidden by the sunglasses. "And at least you're not the bear or cougar I thought you were."She angled him a mischievous smile as she bent over to pick up the knapsack that had been the first victim. "Didn't think I was old enough to be a cougar."Too late Lee caught the implied insult he had given her. "No. Sorry, I meant the cat. Mountain lion might have been a better designation."She smiled again and Lee couldn't stop a twinge of attraction. She was an intriguing combination of pretty and striking."Do we know each other?" he asked, trying to tweak out a memory that seemed to elude him."I can't believe a good-looking guy like you doesn't have better lines," she quipped as she slipped her camera in her bag."Chalk it up to being out of practice," he returned."So you decided to practice on me?"He laughed, surprised at how easy she was to be around for someone he just met. "Sorry. My dad always said clichés are the tool of the lazy mind."Her answering chuckle as she put her camera back in the knapsack created a tremor of awareness and behind that a flutter of familiarity. Not too many people knew about this place. Why was she up in the tree and how had she gotten here? No vehicle was parked at the end of the trail. She stood, slinging the bag over her shoulder, and it seemed she was looking at him, as if she was trying to figure out who he was.Which was precisely what he was doing. Then, as she pulled her sunglasses off, she knocked her hat off her head and her auburn hair tumbled to her shoulders, her amber eyes fringed with thick lashes were revealed, and reality followed like a Montana snowstorm as things clicked into place. He knew exactly who she was.Abby Newton. Daughter of Cornell Newton, the man Lee had run down with his truck after a party that had gotten out of hand. The accident had put Cornell in the hospital and Lee in jail. The shame of what he had done had kept Lee away from home for almost nine years.Until now.He knew the precise moment her own recognition of him clicked. She took a step back, her eyes narrowed and her impudent grin morphed into a scowl."Well, well," she said, the ice in her voice making him shiver. "Lee Bannister, back from exile. I'm going to blame my slow recollection to the fall out of the tree. Didn't think I'd ever forget your face, but then, you've changed since I last saw you.""Hey, Abby." He tried to sound casual. Tried to ignore the mockery in her voice.Lee hadn't seen her since her father was awarded damages of two hundred thousand dollars and he'd been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for reckless driving under the influence. The accident he'd caused had put her father in the hospital and had created injuries that, as far as he knew, Cornell was still dealing with. That had been over nine years ago. Lee had paid his debt to society and was still working on repaying his parents for the money they had to dole out for the settlement. His father had to downsize his cattle herd as a consequence. When Lee was released from prison, he took on a job working offshore rigs. And he sent his folks every penny he could. He hadn't been home since.Though Abby was a Saddlebank native as well, he had heard she was working overseas. Seeing her now was a shock and an unwelcome surprise. She reminded him of a past he'd spent years trying to atone for."I'm guessing you're back for Keira's wedding," she said, her voice matter-of-fact, settling her hat back on her head and pulling the bill down as if to hide the anger in her gaze."And the anniversary celebration," he added gruffly. The anniversary was a big deal. Refuge Ranch was one of the few family-owned ranches that could trace their ownership back to when settlers first started in the basin. A reporter was even coming to spend time at the ranch and planned to cover the celebrations and do a feature story on it for Near and Far.His father had warned him that he would be the one to help the guy out.More penance, he thought. Babysitting a reporter and showing him around the ranch."Right," she said, tucking her sunglasses in the pocket of her vest. "I heard about that. One hundred and fifty years of Bannisters at Refuge Ranch. Quite the heritage."Was she mocking him? Though he couldn't blame her if she did. He knew he wasn't her favorite person. He looked back over his shoulder at the view he had hoped would give him some peace and ease him into a difficult homecoming. He didn't think the past would be dredged up quite so quickly, however.Help me through this, Lord, he prayed, clinging to the faith he'd returned to during those years in prison. Help me to accept what I can't change. He turned back to Abby, knowing he had to face reality. Trouble was, he wasn't sure what to say or how to say it."I know it's too late and I know that words are easy, but I want to tell you that I'm so sorry for what I did to your father," he said. "I wish… I wish I could turn back time. Do it over again.""You're not the only one who wishes that by any stretch."The bitterness in her voice made him wait a beat to give the moment some weight."My father spent a lot of time struggling with pain," she continued. "He was a broken man after that accident. My parents' marriage couldn't hold together. What you did to my family…me and my brother—" She stopped there, holding up her hand as if trying to halt the memories. "Never mind. Neither of us can change anything. It's done. I shouldn't have said anything."Lee knew he deserved every bit of her derision, but he would be lying if he said he wasn't hurt by it. At one time Abby had been important to him. Her poor opinion of him had been almost as agonizing as the loss of his freedom."I better go," she said quietly. "I need to get back to town.""How?" he asked, shifting to another topic. "I didn't see a car.""My friend Louisa has it. Remember her?""Of course. You two were joined at the hip in high school.""Still are, apparently. We live together in Seattle. She's back in Saddlebank visiting her parents and she'll be back soon." Her words were terse and Lee guessed this conversation was over."Well, I hope you have a good visit with your mom," he said. "And if I don't see you again, take care."Her only reply was a curt nod. She gave him a humorless smile, then turned and walked away.Lee dragged his hand over his face. Well, that awkward meeting was done with.If he played his cards right, he might not have to see her again, which was fine with him.She was a reminder of the past he had spent a lot of years trying to atone for.

By Faye Tugs at the heartstrings from the very beginning and doesn't let go.Lee Bannister comes back after leaving eight years ago, for the 150th anniversary of Refuge Ranch and his sister's wedding. Lee has had his reasons for not coming back, he was in prison for 3 years for a DUI and has been working hard since to repay his parents all the money spent on the lawsuit.Abby Newton is the last person that Lee expected to see on his first day back, the daughter of the man who Lee hurt in the accident, and she is just as mad at him as she was eight years ago. But when as a reporter she get's assigned the story on Refuge Ranch can she and Lee overcome the past and forgive? As Lee shows her around the ranch, Abby begins to see that he isn't the same kid from her past. He teaches her to ride, and they rescue a calf.I love Lee's story and how he has intentionally changed his life around. And his father gives good advice about moving forward and becoming a man of integrity.Overall, a fantastic story that had me hooked and cheering for the characters from the very beginning. I would definitely recommend this wonderful novel :)Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. I have several favorite authors that keep my “books to read” pile ever growing. I read one of CAROLYNE AARSEN’S books in the past. It was good enough that her names stuck with me all these years, so when I saw THE COWBOY’S HOMECOMING at the store, I couldn’t resist.Aside from having a cowboy as the main character, and the setting on a ranch, what captured my attention was the hero had been in prison. I have been involved in prison ministry for years. I was anxious to see where MS AARSEN took the plot.Lee Bannister has a past. One that he is not proud of. His sister’s weddings, and the anniversary of the family ranch, has him coming home to a community he is unsure he will be welcomed back into.Abby Newton’s heart is no longer in her job. Tired of traveling, she heads back home. While there, she is given a job, and faced with a man she once loved.MS AARSEN is a wonderful writer, hitting the key elements needed to create a great story. Though I would love to see deeper POV to better connect with the characters. I love the plot, which brought out originality. She has some great lines. I don’t recall a Love Inspired book in the past that was written in such a way that I just had to get the previous book in the series. MS AARSEN alluded to the plot of the hero’s sister and her soon to be husbands in such a way I just have to fill that curiosity and read their story in, Her Cowboy Hero (Refuge Ranch).

They had intelligent conversations in which they shared their feelings/frustrations. They gave each other space and time to sort through the difficulties that stood in their way. There didn't need to be pouting, etc. They had real conflicts, secrets and family dynamics to overcome. I also liked the interactions with secondary characters. This is a part of a series. And while it does stand-alone, I kept feeling like it would be much better if I had read the previous books. I feel it would have added more depth to the story. This is also a Christian romance. It is not as heavily addressed as in some books. However, it is definitely present. I almost always enjoy a ranch/farm setting. This book was no exception. I really liked it.Rating: 4.5 StarsContent: KissingSource: Netgalley

Practical ideas for using video to connect with people and sell more By Terry L., Brock This is a great book not just about selling online, but about connecting with people. Devitre has taken great principles that worked before, and still work today, and he has added the necessary technical skills needed to get more done on scale.I love the way he addresses the concept of selling today. “It is not about selling, it is about talking with someone. You don’t show services to a customer. You uncover needs from a customer. You don’t do something to a customer. You do something with a customer.”In the book, Devitre addresses common objections to using video and shows viable solutions to make it work. I love the visualization he provides with before, during, and after the meeting. This is a good checklist to make sure you don’t omit important details of a video communication or important video business meeting.Of course, technology is changing rapidly and already a few new tools are available that aren’t mentioned in the book. That is not a problem with the way Doug Devitre addresses the inevitable change that occurs. He has developed the infrastructure for his online community to connect with people around the world using, well, lots of technology. This is to be expected by his forethought and practical use of technology bring out solid business results. Get this book and you’ll be amazed at how timeless the principles and ideas are even in a subject that is changing rapidly. If you are wondering about using video communication, this is a book you will want. If you’re already using video communication, I highly recommend getting to check what you’re doing right and what you might want to consider changing. This is a must-read book for anyone who is serious about selling in today’s hyper-video environment. - Terry Brock

Just another title telling you how to be selling your products and services with the help of online tools and technologies. Yet as you read on, it shows how a salesperson can be even more effective, handling a lot of traditional face-to-face interactions from afar with these tools and here lies the real power, benefit and purpose of this book!It made for an enjoyable, actionable and thought-provoking read. Who benefits from a salesperson rushing around their territory (which can be even an entire country) running themselves ragged? Does the company benefit? Does the potential customer benefit? Unlikely. Technologies such as SKYPE today put the potential for face-to-face videoconference business meetings in the hand of every company and customer. So much more can be done. Presentations can be made “live” online, split even between participants around the world, allowing true collaborative efforts to be taken. So a salesman could be in New York, presenting to the potential customer in Atlanta, who has a retained consultant in Los Angeles and a third-party integrator in Paris. A solution can be presented, questions asked, discussions raised and then followed-up as required. Why drag everyone to one location or, even worse, have one meeting and then rely on other sub-meetings to cascade the information about before sending the feedback back up the chain in a similar inelegant format. It does not make sense does it?You might be in the same town. Yet why have a one-on-one meeting that takes up time from both sides just to hand over a brochure or sign a contract for a low-value deal? Politeness dictates you won’t just do that cold, so there is a fair bit of padding and shilly-shallying to wrap around the transaction. It costs both parties in any case…Of course there are times when pressing the flesh is important, yet even as a buyer this reviewer can find a lot of physical sales interactions rather unnecessary, taking up my time and effort in the process. All in vain. There is nothing wrong with examining alternatives and trying to implement them. Keeping me happy as a buyer is surely the key to future business – I might be more amenable to a post-sale meeting when I’ve had the benefit of your product or service for some time, giving you additional feedback for your company AND the possibility of slipping in an additional buying suggestion or two that a specific cold-call attempt may not yield. The potential exists to increase sales through increased productivity, efficiency and a really focussed degree of customer engagement. It may even save some money, although that is not the core requirement. A salesperson who works more effectively will be really able to focus on their key tasks, rather than sitting in an airport or cursing the latest traffic jam. Think how many hours are wasted in a given week on non-sales activities. Allowing them to truly better service their customers should make everyone happy, except maybe the company’s rivals who are stuck in a past-world mindset. The author carefully notes that a lot of the advice and techniques detailed in this book is not just for sales people. Streamlined and effective communication can benefit so many different people in business life too. Invest a bit of time and trouble in this book and be prepared to get out a lot more than you might expect. Implementing the change may be the harder part. You won’t necessarily be able to effect change in every area overnight, but it will come, and you will be better armed for the tasks ahead. All in all, this was a pleasant, unexpected find that was significantly better than what one expected (or should that be feared?)

Soul Mirror, by Jessica Tumminello

Review "This short story was an epitome of deep revelations and emotions that every youngster feels. Every story has a hidden message in it that a reader is supposed to discover. Some people discover it and some don't but unconsciously we discover a whole lot of secrets behind a story. I truly believe this thing. So the thing that deeply captured me in this book was how April found out who she is deep inside. The mirror certainly helped her though she saw it as an object which affected her life badly. We all go through certain incidents in life that are so traumatic that shake us to our core and we somehow bury it inside us and try to move on, we become a different person that we weren't before. Just to escape our past we stop caring and stop feeling the deep emotions. We stop being ourselves. We are not ugly, never were, its just our outer self that becomes that way and when we actually realize it deeply, we get to know that our souls were always and will always be beautiful. Its just a matter of realizing who we actually are and be ourselves, not become a totally other person that we are not.I believe this story is the best goodread for young adults who constantly try to find who they are and what they are actually going through. With a touch of this magic mirror the author has hidden a message into this story for the readers to find out. I totally understood the message in my way, and as for the others who will read it, they will find out their own message. My ratings: 4.5/5"Visit her blog here: nargiskalani.wordpress.com/

The story is about the character, April who is the epitome of today's selfie. That is, she's thoroughly absorbed in herself and prone to more than a modicum of machinations for a teen her age.The book is written in the belles lettres style which gives a lot of literary license to the author in developing the characters and presenting colloquial speech. A major part of the story centers around a beautiful little box given to April by her Aunt Grace. Lots of drama surrounds this little box. This reviewer likes some of the poetry associated with the box. Here is a sample:"When you look in a mirror, what do you see?The person you are or the one who will be?You're going to be what you give your eyes to see."At one point, Aunt Grace explains that the mirror responds to those who need it. This is a wonderful aspect of the book because it draws the reader into a deeply personal experience which few books really accomplish these days.Overall, Jessica's book has a lot of possibilities for a book series or even a movie at some point.

I really enjoyed myself last night reading this book. It had such a deep and brilliant concept, also the story was very well put together. Let me warn you, when you pick up this book you will have a hard time putting it down. I only planned to read a few chapters last night but the story was so intriguing that I could not put the book down and I ended up completing it in one sitting.April is a very relatable character, she is a good person but like a lot of people she has some flaws that she needs to reflect on.I loved the idea of a soul mirror showing a person's true insides. I think a lot of people need to reflect more on who they truly are on the inside and not just focus on the exterior. If something like a soul mirror existed in real life, this world would be a much better place.

This story about the inner soul of a young girl is very nice and makes me very reflective about my own life and development. Also the writing was very good, describing situations with just enough detail to be able to become part of them but not too much to drag the scene too long. Many colorful descriptions make it fun to read and I was actually really sad when the book ended. I would've liked it a little longer, but it gives me the freedom to choose my own extended ending. But now I can't wait for the next book.I'm looking forward to reading more of Jessica Tumminello!

By Tony Clark Mr Johnson opens his heart and experiences to make a clear case for the importance of being intentional in the integration of the Bible into every aspect of education and life.Though I'm no longer working in a Christian school, Mr Johnson's principles challenge me as a parent. The statement on page 32 says "Teachers integrate the Bible into the subject and lives of the students to enable them to develop a biblical vision of life that will guide them to think and act for God's glory and their own abundant living." - I have written it down and reworded it to say parents and children so that I can remember the main purpose of what I'm doing as a parent too.
