Vanessa catches her fiance cheating while on vacation so she kicks him out but decides to stay in the little town and make a fresh start. She really likes her neighbor, but feels she isn't good enough because she is a curvy girl. Kyle is a bear shifter an likes his new neighbors curves just fine. So does his bear. Only problem is she is human and he is not sure she would stick around after finding out he is a shifter. She finds out by accident and Kyle knows that the reason he is so protective is because Vanessa is his mate. It is a stand alone HEA book that is the first in a series. It was in my opinion a bit short, but it has all the elements of a good read. There are a man, a woman, a threat to his woman, sizzle in the bedroom, and true love. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Science Fiction Shorts (17,500 words) Thank you for considering to read my stories. I have included my favorite eight short science fiction stories for this collection. If you have only read my novels, I recommend you read them. If you have read one and liked it, you’ll discover more to enjoy here. At the time of publication, each was a top performer. Most of them represent ideas that do not fall within one of the main plots of our novels. Still, they need to be told for enjoyment and for awareness of things that could go wrong wit the new science of genetic programming.

Walter, a struggling farmer, met Margaret, a salaried teacher, at a church outing at summer’s end when she was visiting her sister in Greeley, Colorado. Aside from two brief visits, their courtship unfolds entirely in these letters after her return to Washburn, North Dakota. Sabers are rattling and the economy is tanking when the letters begin in August, 1937. Both struggle with the issues of their day as they share their keys to joy in life and in each other. The letters are a look into the cultural and political concerns of the time as seen through the eyes of two spiritual soulmates spiced by the reflections and anecdotal recollections of Walter’s grateful son who, as a struggling teenager, asked him, “Why are you a Christian?”

Encountering God: Reflections on the Courtship Letters of My Religious Parents, by Mark A. Johnson

From Kirkus Reviews The story of a Christian relationship, revealed in a series of letters.Johnson’s account of his parents’ courtship and marriage opens by characterizing it as “a look into the life of two western farming communities in the late 1930s as seen through the eyes of two evangelical Swedish-Lutherans,” which might strike many readers as unpromising material for a gripping story. But through judicious quotations from his parents’ letters, couched in his own contextualization and observations, Johnson manages to create a quietly captivating picture of two deeply religious people gradually learning about each other. Walter was a farmer in Colorado, and Margaret was choral director and English teacher in North Dakota, and the initial spark of chemistry between them when they met at a church outing prompted the correspondence. Letter writing didn’t come easily to Walter, who confessed up front, “I do not know how to start one, I have trouble finishing them and I do not know what to put in between.” Margaret comes across as a more forceful character from the start, and their letters are full of topical references . . . as well as abundant quotations from Scripture. The biblical quotations never feel forced or browbeating; rather, they convey a remarkably delicate impression of two strong-willed and very different personalities, growing steadily in affection for each other. Johnson smoothly fleshes out this epistolary skeleton with his own theological observations. These interjections (such as, “Helplessness and hopelessness naturally follow when we focus on the failures of others and concentrate on causes that we can do nothing about”) could easily have felt like interruptions, but Johnson makes them work, and the result is a moving glimpse into a very different time and place.A surprisingly winning long-distance love story.

Review Reflections on Encountering God, by Mark A. Johnson, Ph.D. Mark Johnson offers us an incredible invitation. What he intended to be a loving, caring, reflection on a special God-centered relationship from his past turns out to be an invitation to a futuristic reclamation of faith within post-modern relationships. Namely, millennials and other upcoming generations will do well to read this delightful and true story about how meaning and love are discoverable even in a society now guided by sound-bites, virtual meetings, and emoticon-based sharing of feelings. This book is a great gift for those seeking a reconnection with what matters most. The Rev. J. David Pierce, M.Div., Ph.D., Pastor, and former Seminary Dean and Professor of Pastoral Theology

About the Author Mark Johnson has published numerous scientific papers and coedited the book “Concepts and Applications of Molecular Similarity.” He has been an elder at a large Lutheran Church and a large Reformed Church. As a seeker, he has experienced spiritually transformative moments. “Encountering God” is his first book in which he touches upon the complimentarity of religious and scientific views of ones world. Song of Margaret and Walter By Amazon Customer Encountering God is a page turner; after reading one page, letter, or observation by the author (full disclosure--he's my brother) curiosity about the impending revelations is aroused. This is surprising considering the letters are between Margaret and Walter, two Christians whose marks on the world never hit front page news. Having discovered the letters for myself as a preteen I skimmed through a couple, found them rather intriguing and then moved on to other things. The author's fascination with the letters has reignited my interest in their journey to marriage.Walter and Margaret confide to each other their desire to draw ever closer to God. Encountering God reveals how closely their longing to be one with God mirrors their desire to know each other more intimately. As they express a compelling need for a more intimate relationship to God, their words transform into embraces across distance and circumstance. Their words are an interesting reverse to those of the lovers in the Song of Solomon who express sensual delight in the other and thereby evoke a spiritual intimacy with God. When Margaret and Walter write of their passion to be closer to God they evoke their own passion to be the others' love. The author's interspersed commentary enlivens our own quest to explore the ongoing mystery of the dynamic between the spiritual and physical as experienced by each of us every day.

The beauty of the book is the total trust in God shown throughout Walter and Margaret's letters. It is the prime motivator of their lives and an inspiration to the reader. It is a pleasure to read the heartwarming letters that paint a picture of 2 young people falling in love and mapping out a Christian marriage and a "glorious home with Christ for the cornerstone and the ever present guest." The letters will take you back in time and cause you to invest in Walter and Margaret's lives. Their son's narration adds many enjoyable moments and memories. This is a great book for marriage prep class and small groups.

The Courtship Letters - A True Treasure By Wordscaper The friendship letters between Walter and Margaret reveal an unfolding love that both hope will be centered on God, even before they begin to think of marriage. This peek into history through Mark Johnson's parents' courtship demonstrates the important role faith played for many people at that time. Character traits such as humility, hard work, careful use of money, appreciation of nature, reverence for the Creator, commitment to one's church, and selflessness help readers see the pre-WWII years in a new light. Mark's interspersed commentary and the "Looking Back" questions make this book a perfect one for book clubs or small group studies. I would also recommend the book for older teens and marriage seminar attendees. I plan to give copies to engaged and newlywed couples and suggest they read the letters together.

Well written and thought provoking By TFLReader There are those of us that believe that we are on the verge of a great awakening in this world and those that believe that we are on a path to ruin. The truth could be something more uncertain or in the middle of that spectrum and author Scott Bishop explores some of these ideas in his "Even Mountains Must Die". The story of two men, or beings, who get together for an incredibly enlightened philosophical discussion over a game of chess that ends in quite a revelation for one of them. An excellent read that can't help but make you think. Well done.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read it! By RMGilmour At first glance, Even Mountains Die, begins as a harmless philosophical discussion over the plight of man and the future man is carving of the world he lives in. But as we progress through each page, this story takes us on an emotional journey deep into the heart of what we already know or at least suspect on some level, about who we have become and where we may or may not end up… if not for one important trait within us…Thought provoking and well-crafted, Scott Bishop has delivered an intensely satisfying story. A highly recommended read that has been added to my Repeat-Read bookshelf.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thought Provoking Book By M. Inglee Review for Scott Bishop’s Book. When I first began reading this book, I got hung up on the chess game and wondering if there were hidden meanings (a sort of code) in the moves of play. Being a detail oriented person, I was having trouble pulling back and trying to see the big picture of the whole situation. As someone who does not play, nor understand chess, I found it to be a distraction, at first. But then, stepping back to see the big picture…I saw that guess is a game of strategy…it has an opening, mid game and endgame to it. Just as human life and experience does. In the game of chess, the pieces are moved….they do not move with conscious will and have no sway on the outcome. Contrast that to the game of life where people make conscious and unconscious decisions that affect humanity and mother earth with astonishing reciprocity. The one thing that they do have in common is that one wrong move can bring on the endgame sooner than anyone intended or foresaw. Scott Bishop calls the causation of a decision…a momentum line…on which each person who walks the planet has a choice….to either carry it forward or to start another line.A seemingly simplistic book with great depth and intensity, I found myself having to reread it as I had only grasped things on a superficial level on the first read through. One of the quotes of Solomon spoke to me this time through. “Man goes about the business of dying far better than he goes about the business of living.” Man becomes detail l oriented...trying to cram everything in while he can, not stepping back and seeing the big picture …sort of like I did on my first read through. We all live as if the things important to our immediate need were the most important…our need for money, for food, shelter, objects take precedence over the collective the true everything. As long as we continue to not look at things from the perspective of the eagle, we will continue to carry forward momentum lines that preclude living a sustainable life that we are proud to lead for future generations. This is a thought provoking book indeed.

Remarkable lessons in leadership and teambuilding from one of the greatest college football coaches of our timeIn only thirteen years as a head football coach, first at Bowling Green and then at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State, Urban Meyer has established himself as one of the elite coaches in the annals of his sport, with three national championships and a cumulative record of 142 wins and only 26 losses. But sheer statistics are not the measure of his true accomplishment, nor do they speak to his own extraordinary learning journey. Now, in Above the Line, he offers to readers his unparalleled insights into leadership, team building and the keys to empowering people to achieve things they might never have thought possible.   Despite winning two national championships at Florida in only six seasons, Meyer stepped back from the game at the end of the 2010 season, amid health concerns and a growing awareness that his almost maniacal pursuit of perfection was distorting his priorities, distancing him from his family and taking him away from the reasons he wanted to coach in the first place. When he returned to the sport in 2012 as the head  coach at Ohio State, the school he grew up rooting for, Meyer did so with a renewed sense of the deeper purpose of his work and a profound commitment to life balance that had previously been lacking. What remained constant was his passion for leading, teaching and motivating, forging his football teams into a cohesive whole, playing for one another with selfless commitment and uncommon intensity.   Ohio State’s 2014 season was in many ways Urban Meyer’s master class in leadership. The world knows how the story ended: with the Buckeyes capturing the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship with a 42–20 victory over Oregon, with the team’s third-string quarterback at the helm, in only his third collegiate start. Few remember how it began: with a bad early season loss that sent OSU out of the Top 20, season-ending injuries at the most important position on the team, and then, infinitely worse, the tragic death of a teammate. But this team’s resilience was no accident. In Above the Line, Urban Meyer shares with readers OSU’s groundbreaking game plan—the game plan he followed every day in the Buckeyes’ historic 2014 season—for creating a culture of success that engages and inspires the people around them   A student of psychology long before he became a coach, Meyer believes that trust is the bedrock of great achievements and healthy relationships, and explains how to build it, step by step—whether in a team, a family, or a Fortune 500 company. With trust in place, a deep bond unites us in common purpose, and cultivates what he calls "Above the Line" behavior—a learned, empowered response to the challenges we face every day.   Writing with his customary candor and humility, Meyer delivers insights both practical and profound—and applicable far beyond the football field. Packed with real-life examples from a storied season, Above the Line offers wisdom and inspiration for taking control and turning setbacks into victories.

Hold the Line By Jackmack as the book jacket states this is a book on leadership and team building by Coach Meyer with the 2014 Ohio State season as the main background. I had bought this book to learn more about Urban Meyer and his secrets to success. This book is filled with his view on how a team should operate to win a championship. He explains that ones behavior is either "above the line or below the line." I particularly liked his description of below the line behavior-B-Blaming, C-complaining, D-defending yourself. That is a good description of a team not in alignment. I also found his 10-80-10 Principle interesting (Ch.8) and like other ideas in this book, can be applied to life endeavors other than football. I learned that Meyer is a committed Catholic with a Father who positively influenced his life. He is an intense competitor who played Minor League Baseball and believes you should improve yourself/team , everyday. If you are a coach, player or fan or you are looking for an inspirational read about college football, this will be worth your while. Recommended.

A little "salve" for a husband who's been "licking his wounds" since this year's Michigan State loss By Grandma Zizzy When it comes to bleeding scarlet and grey (and - apparently and begrudgingly - predominantly black now for one game per year!), there's no one who lives for the Buckeye games more than my husband. Believe it or not, PRIOR to our grandsons' first birthdays, he had trained them - at the conclusion of our singing the Ohio State fight song - to say "Go Bucks!" So given the expectation (with the football program's #1 ranking at the beginning of the season) that they'd be able to head back to a National Championship game this year, the fact that the OH-SO-CLOSE loss to Michigan State not only lost them the Big Ten title, but also has them headed to the Fiesta Bowl instead has made this one of those "ouch" years for him (a "double ouch" since our niece is a Michigan State alum, which prompted an immediate post-game call to said niece, reminding her of her treasonous college choice!) He really lives and breathes this stuff, with his "man-cave" reflecting those loyalties, so I knew I'd have to tread lightly this year when it came to Christmas purchases.I've lost track of the number of Ohio State football-related books on his shelves - a million, give or take! - so I thought maybe, just maybe he'd want to dive into one of the other half dozen sports bios I'd had under the tree for him this year first. HA! This book - focused on last year's championship season (and all of the great memories it holds for my husband) headed to bed with us Christmas night (I'm thinking about instituting a "no reading past 11pm" rule), and each night since I've been "treated" to a summary of the latest insights, situations, etc. from yet another OSU book he's devouring like it was a steak dinner in front of a man who hadn't eaten for a month. Urban Meyer really does seem committed to living a more even-keeled life, more mindful of his health, while re-committing himself to his family and finding terrific ways to encourage/inspire/motivate the young men who call him "Coach", and my husband's really enjoying this latest offering. I had to kid him last night though... "Now Hon, is this the SAME guy you couldn't say enough negative things about when he was coaching the Gators?" ;-) Hey, as far as I'm concerned, Coach Meyer and the team had another terrific season this year (I actually hate it when our favorite teams are ranked #1 right at the beginning of the year... can't imagine what kind of pressure that puts on players and a coach, with every opponent coming in ready to "leave it all on the field" against the top-ranked team.)Anyway, I think this book is helping to take the "sting" out of the late season turn of events this past year, and now my sister and I need only to survive New Year's Day (with her hubs being as big of a Notre Dame fan as mine roots for OSU)... I think one of us is going to have a much easier time of it than the other! (GO BUCKS... PLEASE!!!)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Leadership Book and More By Kug I love coaches books. They are living on the edge of societal changes. In this book Urban Meyer is transparent and honest. It is extremely well written and easy to read. He weaves in his entire career but not in an overbearing way. His life, coaching and leadership lessons are well worth the price of the book. Some people live thirty years one year at a time. Others live 30 years investing year 1 into year 2 and so on. Urban Meyer learned his lessons along the way and share them, pain and all. One of the best leadership books I've read, and I've read a lot.

My subsequent dabbling in poetry was heavily influenced, in the beginnings, by Bécquer, and still today he remains one of my favorite poets alongside Pablo Neruda and Jorge Luis Borges.I really like Rima X, incorrectly labeled in this edition as IX. It is about the strange vibrations in the air when Cupid is passing by. Rima XII is my favorite of them all. It is about a young woman who has green eyes and would like them in a different color. The poet tries to convince her of how pretty they are, mentioning all the examples in nature of the color green. Unfortunately, this rhyme (rima) is incomplete in this collection.I happily rediscovered rima XXVI. How truthful those words![...]Voces que hacen correr cuatro poetasQue en invierno se embozan con la lira;¡Ladridos de los perros a la luna!Tú sabes y yo sé que en esta vidaCon genio es muy contado el que la escribe,Y con oro cualquiera hace poesía.I also rediscovered and loved rima XC, which also refers to being hit by Cupid.Rimas by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer encompasses a variety of topics ranging from love in all its manifestations, disillusionment, and religious and spiritual epiphanies.I got this collection through Kindle, but it’s in the public domain; it is marred by misspellings but they don't manage to decrease the impact of Bécquer's amazing work.

The Sufis mystic approach to Islam has created much controversy in Muslim theology. Their mysticism and intense concentration on spirituality has served as inspiration for some of the world's most beautiful poetry. These intricately woven poems, most from between 900 and 1400 A.D. celebrate peace and harmony, Spirituality is a beautiful garden of mysticism when viewed through the eyes of the Sufi. Each poem, elegantly translated by the author, is clearly and fully explained in its historical, religious, political, and spiritual context. Written to propagate tranquility and harmony through a better understanding of an important mystic religion and its impact on literature, Garden of the Sufi is a lavishly thorough exploration of Sufi poetry and philosophy.

THE REVOLUTIONARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM BEHIND ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES OF OUR TIME   In 1961, Charles Koch joined his father’s Wichita-based company, then valued at $21 million. Six years later, he was named chairman of the board and CEO of Koch Industries, Inc. Today, Koch Industries’ estimated worth is $100 billion -- making it one of the largest private companies in the world. Koch exceeds the S&P 500’s five-decade growth by 27-fold and plans to double its value on average every six years. What exactly does this company do and why is it so remarkably profitable? Koch’s name may not be on your stain-resistant carpet, stretch denim jeans, the connectors in your smart phone, or your baby’s ultra-absorbent diapers but it makes them all. And Koch’s Market-Based Management® system is what drives these innovations and many more.  Based on five decades of interdisciplinary studies, experimental discovery, and practical implementation across Koch businesses worldwide, the core objective of MBM is to generate good profit. Good profit results from products and services that customers vote for freely with their dollars, products that improve people’s lives.  It results from a culture where employees are empowered to act entrepreneurially to discover customers’ preferences and the best ways to satisfy them. Good profit is what follows when long-term value is created for customers, employees, shareholders, and society. Here, drawing on revealing, honest, and previously untold stories from his nearly six decades in business, Koch walks the reader through the five dimensions of MBM to show how to apply its framework to generate more good profit in any business, industry, or organization of any size.  Readers will learn how to:  ·         Craft a vision for how to thrive in spite of increasingly rapid disruption ·         Select and retain a workforce possessing both virtue and talent ·         Create an environment of knowledge sharing that prizes respectful challenges from everyone at every level ·         Award employees with ownership and decision rights based on their proven contributions, not job title ·         Motivate all employees to maximize their contributions by structuring incentives so compensation is limited only by the value they create   A must-read for any leader, entrepreneur, or student, as well as anyone who wants a more civil, fair, and prosperous society, Good Profit is destined to rank as one of the greatest management books of all time.

Good Profit: How Creating Value for Others Built One of the World's Most Successful Companies, by Charles G. Koch

Review "Charles Koch is right, there is a difference between Good Profit and bad profit. And this book helps show you the way to good profit – whether you work for an international supermarket chain, a medium-sized regional business, or your own start-up.” - John Mackey, Co-Founder and Co-CEO Whole Foods Market  Charles Koch’s Good Profit is a must read for any businessperson or serious student of business.  As a transformative leader of Koch Industries, Koch the author delivers not just business wisdom but the economic punch of decision-making at the margin and Market-Based Management.  The book, like Koch’s management tools, bridges theory and practice masterfully.  But the title’s engine says it best: ‘Good profit’ arises from delivering value to customers.  And Koch Industries’ spectacular success over the past half century shows that good profit creates great value.  - Glenn Hubbard, Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics, Columbia Business School “The ultimate “how to” book on running a successful business.  Charles Koch’s approach is extraordinarily thoughtful and comprehensive, reflecting his more thasn 50 years of experience in growing Koch Industries to the second largest private corporation in America.  His emphasis on the key role that values play in his leadership and management model is especially important in today’s business environment.  A must read for those who want to take their enterprise to the next level.” -- Richard B. Myers, General, USAF, Ret., 15th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff   “Charles Koch is a genuine patriot, and his lifelong mission is to make America as strong and free as she can be.  He believes the principles of economic opportunity that have guided America are worth protecting.  This book will teach us how."   - -(Papa) John Schnatter, CEO Papa John’s Pizza      “Good Profit is an exploration into the mind and philosophy of one of America’s most extraordinary businessmen.  Charles Koch explains – through example, anecdote, and impressive analysis – how Market-Based Management has enabled Koch Industries to create real, sustainable value for consumers and businesses alike.  You’ll be pleased by his openness.  He’s as candid about his failures as he is his successes, and willing to expose both in the interest of the greater good. “ -- Leslie Rudd, Entrepreneur, Winery Owner, former owner Dean & DeLuca"Writing about Charles Koch has become a cottage industry but, until now, there's been little from the man himself.  Read his new book, Good Profit, and you can learn directly from him what he thinks and how he has built one of the biggest and most successful businesses in the world."    -- Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D. President and CEO, United Negro College Fund (UNCF)    “Here is a clear example of the American dream and how our country benefits when successful entrepreneurs create new jobs (and more taxes for government services) while providing the golden egg for philanthropic efforts.  The real story behind this book is not just Charles Koch’s secret to success – it is the remarkable path he and his brother took in becoming two of America’s most generous philanthropists.  Their recipe for creating “good profits” has enabled them to grow their businesses, reward their employees and still have plenty left over to invest in the nation’s most important charitable groups and institutions supporting America’s freedom.  It is a worthwhile read!” --Charles R. Schwab

About the Author Charles G. Koch is chairman of the board and CEO of Koch Industries, Inc., a position he has held since 1967. He is renowned for building Koch Industries into the second-largest private company in the nation -- currently valued at $100 billion-- making him the fourth wealthiest man in America, according to Forbes.           Wichita, Kansas-based Koch Industries, Inc. began as Wood River Oil and Refining Co. in 1940. Koch employs more than 100,000 people in about 60 countries worldwide, with 60,000 of those in the United States. Good Profit = Good Book By bigpete10092 Overall the book is well written and easy to read and includes a personal side of Charles Koch not seen before-like the 153 death threats he got in 2014. The book discusses how Koch has grown tremendously since the 1960's (Charles didn't simply inherit the company as some might say). At 79 Koch still puts in 9 hour work days. The company has grown so much by reinvesting 90% of their earnings back into the company. What is interesting is how Koch Industries despite having 100,000 employees doesn't appear to be bureaucratic and individuals are always asked to challenge and consider continuous improvement which sometimes never occurs at even Fortune 500 companies.Overall the book is a mix of economics, a business profile, behavioral finance, philosophy, and good story telling of business failures. What I enjoyed the most Charles Koch is honest about his failures (there are plenty too). At one time Koch believed the company would go bankrupt in the 1970s. Koch tries to apply Market Based Management to every day examples (including the NFL and even how much time he should spend working editing grammar of the book he wrote). Case studies at the end of the book are interesting. Anecdotes of Koch over the long company history are sprinkled throughout the book. For instance the company got rid of insurance programs and mainly self insures. Only downside of book is wished it had more of the personal side. The book is really a great book for anyone who wants to try to live their life to their maximum potential.

Fascinating to read about managing "Decision Rights" - allowing the person with best relevant knowledge or By Amazon Customer A must read for any entrepreneur or senior manager. The author explains how he has woven his personal philosophy and core values into critical management tools to help sustain business profitability and high growth rates. Fascinating to read about managing "Decision Rights" - allowing the person with best relevant knowledge or , as he says, "comparative advantage" to make decisions as opposed to the most tenured pedigreed ranking person. A refreshing and unabashed primer on capitalism in action.

By jlw You have to read about Charles Koch to believe that integrity at this high level of business still exists in America. He is a truly a remarkable man that has the kind of character that I pray my own children one day will exhibit in their businesses and their private lives. You will get a picture in Good Profit why his company went from $61 million annually in the 60s to over $110 billion today. His firm boils down to how he picks his employees-- values over talent. He turns down the most capable seekers if they do not treat people with the utmost of respect and show great levels of humility. This is rare stuff in business these days. Just think where our nation could be if more business owners would be more old fashioned like this rare gem. You will get a picture in his book of how generational ethics comes down from his father who wrote a touching letter to him as he gave him a significant sum of money sharing with his son that he will consider it a mistake to have given him this money if he steals the glory and pride of accomplishment. Read Koch and you will want to be more like this gentle giant!

By Anna Salamatin Our fifth visit to Eveiller drive finds us at the home of Jeff and Ashley where she is trying desperately to understand why her life has become such a struggle. You see, Ashley is the step parent to Jeff's teenage son & daughter. Their attitudes towards her have changed drastically since the wedding. They treat her like she's the hired help, only there to pick up after them, do their laundry, keep them fed, and put up with their smart ass and demeaning remarks. In fact, Emily, flat out said as much to her just this morning. But the hardest thing is that Jeff is just blowing it off, telling her to be patient. That it's an adjustment for them, they will come around. Thank goodness that it's her turn to have the girls over for their weekly group get together, and sure enough a plan of action is formed and it does the trick. They are off to a great start......and, oh yeah, passions are reignited for Ashley and Jeff. Burn Baby Burn! This is a quick read, but just like the previous visits to the group sessions with the ladies of Eveiller drive, I come away thinking there is a life lesson to be had. This one is for any step parent. I can't think of too many jobs that are harder because it involves body, heart and soul.

—LEE TONITTO, CEO, AUSTRALIAN MARKETING INSTITUTE

One of Inc Magazine's Top Business Books of 2015.

Our new digital landscape has spawned an entrepreneurial culture and the belief that anyone with a laptop and an Internet connection has the power to change the world—to create an idea that flies. But for every groundbreaking business that started this way, a thousand others have stalled or failed. Why? What’s the secret to success? What do Khan Academy, the GoPro camera, the Dyson vacuum cleaner and Kickstarter have in common?

After years of consulting with hundreds of innovators, creatives, entrepreneurs and business leaders to help them tell the stories of their ideas, I have discovered something: every business that flies starts not with the best idea, the biggest budget or better marketing, but with the story of someone who wants to do something—and can’t.

We don’t change the world by starting with our brilliant ideas, our dreams; we change the world by helping others to live their dreams. The story of ideas that fly is the story of the people who embrace them, love them, adopt them, care about them and share them. Successful ideas are the ones that become meaningful to others—helping them to see what’s possible for them.

Our ideas fly when we show others their wings.

If you are looking for techniques, you'll not find it in this book. You need to buy the author's course for that. Why buy this book then?

I have been an avid reader of Bernadette's blog for sometime now (it's actually the only marketing blog I read) because she has a powerful way of cutting through all the jargon and getting to the heart of what marketing really is. She continually reminds me that successful marketing isn't so much about what I want to accomplish, but about what my audience wants to accomplish. It's not so much about telling people to like my message as it is about creating something that helps my audience reach their goals.Meaningful is a wonderful summary of Ms. Jiwa's marketing wisdom. It is concise and engaging, and I found myself wanting to highlight almost every sentence. Do yourself, and your business, a favor and buy this book.

About the Author Emilie Richards's many novels feature complex characterizations and in-depth explorations of social issues, a result of her training and experience as a family counselor, which contribute to her fascination with relationships of all kinds. Emilie, a mother of four, lives with her husband in northern Virginia, where she is currently working on her next novel for MIRA Books.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Analiese Wagner needed to breathe. She was pairty certain she hadn't inhaled even once during the past hour. Now her head felt three sizes too large, and she was perilously close to her first-ever panic attack. She needed to find a place where she could stand unobserved and fill her lungs and bloodstream with oxygen. Maybe afterward she would be calm enough to get behind the wheel of her Accord and risk life and limb in Asheville's rush-hour traffic, but not yet.The church sanctuary was too far away and probably in use. The closest restroom was public. She saw the door to the sexton's supply closet, opened it, slipped in and closed it behind her. The moment she did, the small room, maybe three feet by five, went dark, but she didn't care. The air smelled, not unpleasantly, of pine and chlorine. And she was blessedly alone.Analiese stood very still, eyes closed, and filled her lungs, releasing the air slowly, and then repeating. She was well acquainted with prayer and meditation, but right now she needed oxygen and silence more. When her head stopped swimming she rested her face in her hands. Her ministry had come to this. Escaping into the sexton's closet to inhale poisonous chemicals rather than face even one more member of her staff or congregation.Long ago the man who had encouraged her to enter seminary had told her there would be moments when she wanted to hang up her clerical collar. He hadn't told her that she would face most of them alone, and that sometimes God, who was supposed to walk beside her, would wander off, too.But Isaiah must have known. Who faced loneliness more often than a Catholic priest?A long moment passed before she straightened, took one more deep breath, and opened the door. No one was in the hall, which made for the best moment of her day. She started toward the front door of the parish house and was only inches from escaping when a familiar voice sounded behind her."You'll be gone for the rest of the day?"Myra Hudson had been the church administrator longer than Analiese had ministered to the congregation, and she had the gray hair and pursed lips to prove it. The rest of the staff had already gone home, but obviously Myra was soldiering on.Analiese managed one small smile as she faced her. "Trust me, Myra, my absence will be a gift."The other woman's scowl eased just a fraction. She was twenty years older than Analiese's thirty-nine, and twenty years more experienced in getting what she wanted. "You have three phone calls to return and a mountain of correspondence. You told me to remind you.""A moment of weakness." Myra didn't budge, and Analiese lifted her hands in defeat. "I'll make the calls tonight from home. The mountain can wait until tomorrow.""I hope wherever you're going you plan to walk?""And the reason?""Because when I looked outside a few minutes ago, a van and a forklift were parked right behind your car.""I'm going downtown. To a rally where I'm a featured speaker because somebody in charge actually believed I had something to say.""Unlike everyone else you've encountered today?"Analiese let her statement stand.Myra took pity. "They're over at the sanctuary. I guess you could put on your friendliest smile and beg them to park somewhere else."Analiese didn't have to ask who "they" were. Radiance Stained Glass from Knoxville, Tennessee, was in town to take measurements for a new rose window in the choir loft, as well as to listen to the council executive committee's opinion about proposed designs. Analiese had spent the past hour butting heads with the executive committee, but luckily she'd been excused from the next portion of the meeting, since everyone knew exactly what her objections to the designs were and didn't want to hear them again. She calculated how long it would take the Radiance crew to move the forklift. She was already late."I don't have my car," Myra said, taking pity again, "or I would let you borrow it."A man spoke. "I have mine."Analiese looked up as Ethan Martin joined them from the connecting hallway. She craned her neck to peek behind him. "Please tell me the committee's still in session," she said in a low voice. His smile was warm, his brown eyes sympathetic. "They're waiting for Radiance. You still have time to get away.""Could you possibly get me downtown, Ethan? I'm sure I can find a ride back home afterward.""I ought to be at the rally, too. It's no trouble."She met his smile with a more or less genuine one of her own. Ethan was an attractive man in his fifties who really did seem to be an advertisement for the prime of life. Although he attended services from time to time, he wasn't a formal member of her congregation. He had been a member, well before Analiese's arrival, but he had resigned after a contentious divorce. His wife, Charlotte Hale, had stayed."Why should you be there?" she asked after they said goodbye to Myra and started toward Ethan's car, wisely parked in the general lot well behind the building."I'm working with the Asheville Homeless Network. They asked me to draw up some preliminary sketches for two newly donated lots.""You're becoming Super-Volunteer. I feel guilty I asked you to give your thoughts about the window at today's meeting.""Because I'm already volunteering elsewhere, or because the people on the committee need a few lessons on how to get along?"Analiese knew Ethan had only agreed to sit in on the rose window committee—who he had represented at the meeting today—as a favor to her. He was an architect whose professional insight was extremely valuable, but even more important, much of the funding for the new window was coming from a bequest Charlotte had made to the church. Ethan and Charlotte had reunited before her death, and the committee was obligated morally, if not legally, to take his opinions and those of Taylor, their daughter, into account."The executive committee can be a cranky lot," she said, thinking what an understatement that was. "I'm sorry I got you into this."Afternoon sunshine bronzed the bare limbs of trees that just a month before had flaunted rainbow-colored leaves. November weather in Asheville was unpredictable, but right now the air was balmy, as was the light breeze that pulled wisps of dark hair from the knot she had fashioned on top of her head. As they walked around the parish house, past Covenant Academy, the elite private school the church had founded, she breathed deeply and forced herself to appreciate the parklike surroundings. The grounds had been recently manicured by the garden crew, and pansies and chrysanthemums filled beds along with the stalks of departed hollyhocks nodding in the children's garden. That garden sat at the rear of the parish house, nearly out of sight of the street, tended and appreciated by Sunday school classes who grew produce for a local women's shelter. Analiese had been forced to fight for the patch of land, since the garden was rarely tidy and even more rarely productive. But the children loved working in the sun and getting their hands dirty, and the lessons they learned were invaluable. As they turned toward the garden she noticed several people strolling to admire the flowers, as well as a family sunning themselves on the grass in the farthest corner. From this distance she didn't recognize anybody, but they seemed at home. She lifted her hand in acknowledgment as she and Ethan passed the other way. She liked nothing better than to see both the grounds and the building in constant use.In the parking lot he opened the passenger door of his car and waited until she had settled herself before he closed it. He pulled into traffic and was headed downtown before he spoke."So tell me what else went wrong today."Although they had never discussed it, Analiese suspected that Ethan had never rejoined the Church of the Covenant because his friendship with her would be altered. He would then be a "lamb in her flock," an image she wasn't fond of since none of the church members were vaguely sheeplike. But she liked being Ethan's friend instead of his spiritual guide."You know me well, don't you?" she said. Her loneliness eased a little. When a motorcycle cut in front of the car he smoothly switched lanes without missing a beat of conversation. "You held your own, Ana, you really did. But I'm not accustomed to the edge I heard in your voice."He'd cut through her defenses so quickly, she didn't have time to ward off a flashback of the past hours. Waking up alone and lonely in a silent house. Morning prayers interlaced with the usual doubts about her calling. Mind-numbing paperwork no one in seminary had warned her about. Lunch by the bedside of a terminally ill teenager, and finally the meeting with the council executive committee, in which she had been not so subtly reminded of her relative youth and inexperience—as well as the number of parishioners who would prefer a man in their pulpit."Some days it doesn't pay to get out of bed," she said."Especially when you know the committee is lying in wait."She understood what he was doing. On their short trip into town he was giving her the opportunity to unload, to tell somebody her troubles for a change. He was a genuinely compassionate man, and a strong one. He would be a logical choice to talk to, except that unloading was not in her nature."Tell me about this project for the Homeless Network," she said, turning the conversational spotlight to him. After one quick glance, as if to assess whether to coax her, he described his newest undertaking. Several architects were working together to create as many apartment buildings as they could fit into the allotted space and still give occupants attractive, liveable homes to call their own. Ethan wanted to use as much recycled material as possible, and she knew from hearing about the renovations he had done to his own condo that he could do it in style. She asked questions right up until the moment he dropped her off at the edge of the crowd that was gathering for the rally."I'm going to park beside my office, but I'll meet you back here to take you home," he said, pointing to a street sign. "In case I can't find you at the end.""You're really planning to stay?""I want to hear what you have to say.""Then I'll treat you to dinner afterward, but it will have to be fast. I have a list of phone calls to make tonight.""Ana…maybe you ought to take the night off.""Not with the council executive committee gunning for me."After today, you still want to keep your job?"No good answer occurred to her, but she had to smile. She stepped back and waved him off.She was quickly drawn into the crowd. When she had agreed to add her comments to those of county officials and other leaders at this rush-hour rally, she hadn't realized how large the gathering would be. She'd said yes a month ago and then nearly forgotten until a reminder had popped up on her calendar. She was lucky Ethan had driven her and could park in his personal space. Even on a relatively quiet day downtown parking was tough. She was early—that seemed nearly miraculous since so little had gone well today—and she had a few minutes to unwind before she made her way toward the front. She skirted the crowd and leisurely took in the view. The scene was Asheville at its finest. Bare-chested, tattooed Gen Xers tossed Frisbees with mutts yapping at their heels. A small group of men in sports coats accompanying women in heels looked as if they had just left downtown offices. Tourists with cameras and retirees dressed for the next round of golf stood side by side with members of the crowd who looked considerably less fortunate. Many of that last group were carrying large backpacks or duffels. One was pushing a shopping cart.Nobody had as much to gain from a well-attended rally as Asheville's homeless. The city was working hard to find solutions. Panhandling was now illegal, and of course not everybody was pleased about that, including the man several feet away who was engaged in an angry conversation with a young mother clutching her baby firmly to her chest.Analiese didn't think twice. The pair was off to one side of the crowd, in the direction she was walking, and nobody else seemed to be paying attention. The young woman turned and tried to get away, but the man, sporting snakelike dreadlocks, grabbed her shoulder and jerked her backward just as Analiese got close enough to hear him."Just some change. You got change, I know you do!"Analiese arrived just as the young woman, off balance, nearly fell into the man's arms. "Hey," she said calmly. "Please let her go. You're scaring her."The man released the young mother with a shove, and she stumbled forward with her baby still clasped against her. He faced Analiese, and up close she saw his eyes were wild, his pupils distended. She was still several feet away but his smell preceded him. Poverty and despair, vomit and urine. She steeled herself not to react, and watched as the young woman found her feet and disappeared into the crowd."How 'bout you?" he asked, a grin revealing decaying teeth. "Am I scaring you enough to give me some money?""Why don't I see if I can find somebody with Rescue Ministries to help you? They have better solutions."He moved closer. She refused to retreat. In that moment it seemed that she'd been retreating all day. There was no sexton's closet here, and the time had come to stand her ground."I need money!"Now she smelled alcohol, too, although her first guess had been drugs. She felt and heard movement behind her, and she hoped that reinforcements were closing in."I know you do," she said calmly. "I can get you help. Come with me and we'll find somebody at the front who can get you dinner and shelter for the night."Analiese had plenty of street smarts. Before seminary she had been a broadcast journalist who had done stories in some of San Diego's meanest neighborhoods, so she was paying close attention to the man's body language. Unfortunately she had overestimated how drunk he was. She hadn't expected him to move so quickly. One moment he was an arm's length away, the next his hands were closing around her neck. She only had time for a quick gasp before her arms came up between his, and she slammed them against his wrists to break his grip.Furious, he grabbed her again, and this time he shoved her with all his considerable strength. The fall seemed to take forever, but once she hit the grass, she rolled to her side and tried to push upright. The man who had attacked her was screaming now, as if he'd been tackled. At the moment she couldn't worry about him. She was still lying on the ground. The people closest to her tried to make room to help, but the crowd surrounding them was expanding and pushing in from the edges. She was jostled as people tried to clear a space. Somebody's Doc Martens stomped on her hand."Give her some room!"Analiese looked up and just glimpsed a man hovering protectively over her, arm extended. She grabbed his hand gratefully, and he hauled her to her feet.

Branfield The Color of Light is another thought-provoking and poignant addition to Emilie Richards’ wonderful Goddesses Anonymous series. In this outing, minister Analiese “Ana” Wagner’s judgment is called into question when she steps in to help a homeless family. As if she does not have enough on her plate, she is surprised by the sudden reappearance of her longtime friend and mentor Father Isaiah Colburn. Although they have been out of touch for several years, they easily pick up where they left off but Ana is disconcerted by the realization that she is still in love with Isaiah. Unbeknownst to Ana, Isaiah is close to finalizing a decision that will change the course of his life. Both of them are at a crossroads that leaves each of them questioning whether they have chosen the right path and if not, what comes next for them professionally and personally? While Ana is not having a crisis of faith, she does begin to question whether or not she wants to continue her career as a minister. She is continually butting heads with some of the church’s leadership and members of the congregation and her days are filled with putting out fires and juggling meetings. Her decision to help the Fowler family is met with resistance and Ana is frustrated by some of her parishioner’s lack of compassion for their situation. Trying to get the family some assistance is a burden she willingly takes on, but Ana is coming dangerously close to burning out as she devotes most of her time to helping others.Isaiah is also having trouble reconciling the demands of priesthood with his personal life. He is on a sabbatical to try to decide whether or not to leave the priesthood when he reconnects with Ana. Although he is close to making a final decision about his future, both Isaiah and Ana are concerned about the effect his choice will have on the future of their relationship and their careers. The story arc about the Fowler family is particularly heart wrenching. A job loss devastated the family and they have been trying to get back on their feet for quite some time. Much of the family’s care rests on the shoulders of fourteen year old Shiloh due to her father Man’s depression and her mother Belle’s poor health. Ana steps in to help Man find work and get Belle some much needed medical attention and as their lives finally begin to turn around, Shiloh discovers she can rely on her parents to take care of her after a traumatic incident. The Color of Light is a very heartwarming and inspiring story. As in previous installments of the Goddesses Anonymous series, Emilie Richards raises awareness of social issues in a realistic and straightforward manner. There is also a strong spiritual element to the storyline that is quite thought-provoking. All in all, it is an absolutely delightful story that tackles some real life problems with a great deal of compassion that old and new fans are sure to love.I received a complimentary copy for review.

Learning how to listen By m. e. berg One of the most interesting things about this book is the number of different stories that are intertwined.basically, this is the story of a woman who is an unmarried minister and a longtime friend and mentor of hers who is a Jesuit Priest. There are also a family who are homeless and indigent because of the economy where they had lived and how they gradually found themselves individually and as a family. There are also the members of her congregation and a group of women called the 'Goddesses'. But mostly it is a moving story of redemption and learning to list to yourself, to your friends and enemies and to your God in whatever form you worship. This book is moving and sensitive and made me think and feel in ways I frequently forget to do

Staley First, let me say that Emilie Richards is one of my favorite authors and that I love the Goddess series. This book sucked me righn and continued with this series of stories about these women. I was completely engaged in the story and the characters. This book centered around Annileese (spelling?), the minister of the group and I was curious how her character would be handled. I grew up in a pastor's home and most of the time pastors and their families in fictional settings, whether TV or books or movies, resemble nothing close to reality. In this case, however, the character was realistic and really represented why people go into ministry. And, it was a great story about real people who love and help each other.
