16 LOVECRAFTIAN TALES FROM AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY Trains embody the promise and peril of technological advance. They unlock opportunities for wealth and travel, but also create incredible chaos--uprooting populations and blighting landscapes. Work on or around the rails leads to unwelcome discoveries and, in light of the Mythos, dire implications in the spread of the rail system as a whole. A certain path to uncovering unwelcome truths about the universe is to venture beyond our own "placid island of ignorance" and encounter foreign cultures. The Orient Express serves as the perfect vehicle for such excursions, designed as a bridge between West and East. Movement into mystery forms the central action for many stories in this volume. The only limitation placed upon writers for this collection was that their works somehow involve the Orient Express and the Mythos. The last warning whistle has blown, and we are getting underway. Have your tickets at the ready and settle in for a journey across unexpected landscapes to a destination that--well, we'll just let you see for yourself when you arrive. We promise this though: murder will be the least of your problems on this trip aboard the Orient Express!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. From "The Horror Fiction Review" By Christine If there’s a hierarchy to the realm of Lovecraftian fic, I’m not sure where I’d stand, but I know when I recognize the names of some real heavy-hitters. Ken Hite, Robin Laws, Christopher Golden, Lucien Soulban and Cody Goodfellow are only some of those whose work appears in this classy book edited by James Lowder. And speaking of classy, is there anything more evocative of class, of the golden age of the good old days of high-end travel and prestige, not to mention mystery and intrigue, than the fabled Orient Express? What a central setting to serve as a theme for any anthology; giving it an eldritch twist only enhances the experience!A train might seem like a limitation; there’s only so much to do with the same route, right? Wrong. Each of these tales bring something different. Some are set during the glorious heyday of the Orient Express, others in later days when nostalgia comes up against the inevitable decay of time, still others transcend or step out of time altogether. One of my stand-out favorites of the set is James L. Sutter’s “The God Beneath the Mountain,” which is set before the train ever makes its maiden voyage. After all, the tracks must be laid, tunnels must be hewn and blasted from the rock. It’s hard work, grueling, expensive, frightening and dangerous. Even more frightening and dangerous, as one young doctor is about to find out, than anyone ever imagined.“Stained Windows,” by Joshua Alan Doetsch, is my other top fave (it was a close battle). It’s both nightmarish and dreamlike, a journey of true madness, brilliantly written and the best possible close to the book to make for maximum lingering unreality and can’t-stop-thinking-about-it effect.I’ve sometimes had trouble getting into the writing style of Kenneth Hite, but in this one, I found his “La Musique de l’Ennui” surprisingly readable, refreshing, and fun. Besides, it takes a few affectionate jabs at the whole fandom phenom, and I can never resist a clever punny title.A couple of other mentions before I end up listing the whole table of contents: “A Finger’s Worth of Coal,” by Richard Dansky, appealing to my interests in more-ancient-than-ancient history, time, horror, and destiny … as well as my fondness for really spectacular description. And Christopher Golden’s “Bound For Home,” in which Houdini attempts an escape more daring than even he’d bargained for.The sixteen stories contained in this book are, let’s face it, pretty much riding in the first class cars. As one would have every reason to expect, from authors of this caliber. Well worth a look, and well worth a place on any Mythos afficionado’s shelf.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well worth the read By M Excellent collection of short stories. Bought this for my wife who loves all things Mythos. Good quality book from a physical stand point as well. Variety of authors gives it a good balance. Well worth the read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fun, creepy read! By BunnyRabbits A great collection. I think maybe there was only one story that I skimmed through; the rest I read with enjoyment. The tone of the stories is fitting for the collection: spooky and atmospheric, not gory. I hope they come up with a part 2, because I would snatch it up in a heartbeat. It's not often I find collections so consistently good.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful snapshot of Stevie and Julian's week - can't wait for more! By Natasha WWLB gives us an insight into a week in Thailand, where two strangers meet and fall for each other. Julian Moors is celebrating the end of his university degree while Stevie Appleton has come to relax after finishing high school. They’re both looking to relax, but aren’t quite prepared for each other.I loved this book - for me it highlighted a moment often wondered about ever since first meeting these characters in the earlier Thirty-Eight books. I love seeing a different Stevie and a different Julian to the ones we have met later in their lives.I think if anyone is picking up this book who is not yet familiar with these two, there’s a couple of things to keep in mind:We don’t learn a lot of detail about their backgrounds or their futures. We get hints, for sure, but this is very much a snapshot of a week, which just reflects what it was like for these two people as they meet and spent their time together without talking of their relevant past. We don’t get a full sense of exactly why Stevie acts the way she does. Her actions and thoughts at times frustrate, but it makes complete sense - she is young and just on the cusp of adulthood. Julian is the one who commands most attention. I loved seeing how he fell hard and fast, and has a lot less reservations than Stevie as he’s more sure of himself and where he’s at in his life.Readers will get the most out of this novella if they’ve read the previous Thirty-Eight books (Thirty-Eight Days and Thirty-Eight Reasons) as I have. You’ll have met Stevie and seen a little of Julian before, and so you’ll appreciate this snapshot all the more. Of course we are left wanting more - that’s exactly how a prequel novella is meant to leave us - and I can’t wait to read the next.I received an ARC of this book for the purpose of an honest review.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! By angelofegypt I was given an ARC of WWLB in exchange for an honest review. What We'll Leave Behind is the first book in the Left Behind series, a spin-off of the Thirty-Eight series by Len Webster. In this book, we get an in-depth view of Stevie Appleton and Julian Moore's perspectives, unlike the scratch of the surface we got to see in the original series. Basically, Stephanie suddenly found herself in Thailand for the summer in replacement for a friend. There, she meets Julian; an extraordinary man with an underrated sense of humor. They kick it off almost immediately, yet none of them actually knows the other. Below I'm going to stat what I believe are the goods and the bads in this novella. The GOODS:-The Writing: If there's one thing in this world Len can do right, it's writing. Her style is literally amazing, showing so much yet so moderate emotions. I love how descriptive and metaphoric she is towards everything. She uses emotions to declare intimacy, instead of just plain graphic descriptions. The way she describes everything is addicting. It makes her books all the more page-turners.The CHARACTERS:-I'm surprised to say that I haven't read a book with likable characters in so long. Usually in contemporary books, the main character is whiny and stubborn and just straight-forward dumb. Stephanie was actually a very logical character who made good use of her mid - at least at most times-. Julian was actually cute, not too smug or too geeky. He was ordinary, relate-able.The SETTINGS:-I loved the place where this story was set. It's unique and different. It feels cozy, your average hangout hot spot, nothing too extravagant. The BADS:The PACING:-Well, to be honest, I felt some things in this book were a tad rushed. I know it portrays how love at first sight is, but it was extremely unrealistic for the main characters to go through all of that in a single week. A lot of people may disagree, but I honestly think it's what put me off while reading. The PURPLE PROSE:-I'm a big fan of the purple prose. Believe me. I own the entire SHATTER ME series, and I love every single bit of it. But I just felt this method was overused in this book in some way, over and over again. The sunset was described numerous times that made me skip to the points of action. A lot of things were over-described when others didn't get their fair share at all. e.g. Stevie's motel was barely even mentioned, except for the fan. :DWell, those are the only things I have against the novella. Otherwise, it's a must-read in my list. I'm definitely going to check out book two when it comes out.

C'est la perfection."This was the first time I read something written by Len Webster, and I am not a romance lover at all, but God did this book give me feels and the urge to eat a whole packet of Snickers.Len has a beautiful way of penning down words that bleed into your soul and make them stay with you forever. Sentences like -"Whenever you're lost Stephanie, just look into the sky and the stars. They're your direction, and they're your hope and inspiration. They were witnesses to what we shared here."How beautiful is that line by our Julian Moors?Len, I absolutely love your writing style and this prequel was a great idea to publish this so that we knew what was headed our way in 'What You Left Behind'The characters, the setting, the scenes - everything was perfect for a romance novella. I absolutely LOVED Julian and Stevie and their chemistry. And the end was perfectly described and so breathtakingly beautiful and sad, my review cannot do justice to it and to this novella in whole.I am geared up for the novel now. Bring on the tears, Webster!

It is elegantly written, explaining the history behind the devotion, the influence it has had and how to carry it out. I would recommend this book to everyone who desires a closer relationship with our Lord and for those who wish to offer reparation for sins committed against the Blessed Sacrament through carrying out this devotion.

An Amish Boy and a Mother’s Prayer takes readers into the heart of Daviess County, Indiana, where Glen Graber was raised. His family was swiftly kicked out of the Old Order Amish church when Glen’s dad bought a rubber-tired tractor. Then Glen’s mother died, and left him with a request: She had been praying for a business that would alleviate the family’s financial hardship, and asked Glen to take responsibility for the family’s future. Despite the pressure, Glen and his family found hope and humor each day as God miraculously answered their mother’s prayer. More than a biography, this book is about a boy being determined to change his place in the world, and the miraculous reversals of misfortune. It’s about the prayers of a mother, the idiosyncrasies and love of a father, and the strength of a family. It is, in other words, the story of us.

An Amish Boy and a Mother's Prayer: The Founder of Graber Post Buildings Tells His Story, by Glen S. Graber

Review “My friend Glen Graber’s remarkable story unfolds in my own ancestral land of Daviess County, Indiana. In this narrative, I see and sense the indefinable pulse that is Daviess. Names and places I’ve heard spoken from my youth. Glen’s amazing life story exemplifies how it’s possible to pick up and emerge from tough, hardscrabble roots, to triumph over adversity and forge a better life. And it speaks so much to our shared cultural ideals of faith, humility, hard work, gratitude and persistence. I’m glad Glen decided to share his journey in this memoir.” – Ira Wagler, author of New York Times Best-Seller Growing Up Amish

About the Author Glen S. Graber was born in Davies County, Indiana. In 1973 he founded Graber Post Buildings. The company went on to be a huge success, and in 1993, Glen received Indiana’s award for Entrepreneur of the Year. He now winters in Florida with his wife Mary Jane.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent And Modest Memoir By Nathan Albright [Note: This book was provided free of charge by Aneko Press in exchange for an honest review.]Like many good books, this one begins in the middle of things, where the author’s mother is dying and she gives her oldest son a responsibility as well as giving God a prayer that he would be able to provide for his younger siblings and have a business to do so. The memoir then returns to the family history of the author, looking at his parents’ courtship, at their struggles with nine children, and with the difficulties of fitting in, which seemed to be a particularly difficult problem for the author. The memoir itself is mostly chronological (apart from its introductory chapter that sets the stage for explaining the title), and the book as a whole can be said to be an appreciation of and reflection of divine providence and the seriousness of a deathbed blessing. The book itself does not pull any punches, but it shows respect for the author’s parents even as it reflects upon some of the less than pleasant aspects of the upbringing of the author. One of the more curious and noteworthy aspects of this memoir is that the author tells it in the third person. Whether this is out of habitual modesty or some sort of tradition among the Amish that I am not familiar with, it is striking to read such a personal account written at arms length by referring consistently to “Glen” and not to “I.” This is clearly not an accident, but is a deliberate choice that presents the author’s story at arm’s length, even if one can often still feel the intense shame and embarrassment felt by the author at social exclusion as a young man by his unkind peers and by the humiliation over being considered uncreditworthy on his father’s reputation, which led him to long avoid borrowing and in the end made his business more successful, even if it was a slow and gradual process to developing Gerber Post Buildings, which I must admit I had not heard of prior to reading this book, not being someone from Indiana. There is much to praise about this particular book. It offers insightful comments about the need for congregations to be more focused on love and helping members feel as a genuine family with mutual love and respect than legalistic regulations enforced rigidly and harshly, it makes comments about the harm that is caused by ridicule and calling others bad names, and about the importance of family presenting a united front and working together for mutual success and well-being. This was not only an individual memoir, but it provided thoughtful if brief and telling glimpses into the lives of the author’s brothers and sisters, including a humorous and dramatic plane trip shortly after 9/11, and the way in which the author’s sister helped him budget when he was scarcely aware of the term. By showing how a focus on quality work and integrity in one’s dealings led to success and the building of an excellent reputation not only in the local community but in wider spheres, the author gives others encouragement how to do the same in their lives, while telling a dramatic life story full of love for God and for family. This is a memoir not to be missed, even if it could use a catchier title.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Book, Great Story By Brandon J Hadley Glen Graber was born to an Old Order Amish couple in Indiana. His father was a stubborn man and they were soon asked to leave this community. His family moved from fellowship to fellowship, but never abandon their love for God and family. He was the oldest of his siblings, and naturally had a deep felt responsibility to care for his younger siblings. His mother struggled with her health for many years, and when she finally succumbed to cancer, this responsibility became all the more pressing. Although he never intentionally went out to build an industry leader, he dedicated himself to working hard and keeping his priorities straight. Faith and family always came first, along with his dedicated work ethic. Through the values that he had learned growing up he was able to build Graber Post Buildings, and able to provide a life for his siblings that his mother had prayed so hard for. This book could never be compared to the works of other great businessmen. Glen Graber had a life that would make that impossible. Glen never speaks of some great moment of inspiration. He tells a tale of working hard and staying devoted to faith and family. Glen is a simple man, that has done amazing things. His story serves to show that success is available to those who are willing to put in the sweat and tears that building a business requires. This book is far greater than the story of one man building a large company. This about a man who never turned his back on God or on his family. Through each step of the process of building his company, Glen took his family along for the marvelous ride. He would even put off "work", and take his crew to his father's farm for a day of helping out. The stories in this book are at times humorous and sometimes very sad. Glen exposes his humanity and admits his own simplicity. It is a great book about a great man.I was provided a complimentary copy of this title in order to provide this review.www.spiritualwilderness.net@screwtape21

Every good work you have done towards gaining eternal life is worthless. Your Christian best will never be good enough. Your reaction towards those statements might mimic those of the Israelites in Jesus’ day. It was the basic idea Jesus was expressing when He said, “unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20). In that one statement by Jesus, all of their preconceived ideas of God and salvation were put into question. They saw the Pharisees as their models of holiness which few, if any, could ever dream of equaling. If their best wasn’t good enough, who can be saved? Why even try? Of course, what if Jesus wanted us to quit trying? What if Jesus has something better in mind for us? In this book, author and pastor Bill Kasper takes a hard look at the teachings, traditions and lifestyle of the Biblical Pharisees and why they experienced rebuke from Jesus so often. Filled with stories and practical application, this book reveals not only the modern issue of the Pharisaical mentality but also Jesus' solution.

Lisa and Joe Stone, married for twenty years and partners in their small law firm in Henry County, Virginia, handle less-than-glamorous cases, including never-ending complaints from their cantankerous client Lettie VanSandt. When Lettie dies in a freakish fire, the Stones think it’s certainly possible that she was cooking meth in her trailer. But details soon emerge that lead them to question how “accidental” her demise actually was.

Great Suspenseful Legal Thriller - No Spoilers - By Tell Me A Story Martin Clark delivers a thorough legal thriller that doesn't get overly focused on the details of a typical lawsuit (I recently got scammed by an auto insurance co. after 5 year battle, which included severe, permanent injuries sustained in an auto accident). This story is a realistic presentation of the people involved displaying flexible morality to score a win. I have been stunned by the commonness that exists among lawyers and corporate big wigs, it would seem no one is above lying, falsifying evidence or manipulating facts. Clark has obviously seen this consistent character trait in his courtroom. The story flows somewhat rapidly and there is a lot of activity as we observe the situation through Lisa Stone's eyes, wife and partner with Joe Stone, at Stone and Stone, a small town law firm that gets caught in the middle of a firestorm over a patent issue. The story works because everyone lies. Joe Stone is an easy going guy, well liked, considered as the ethical cornerstone of law in his region. He displays immense patience with town lunatic, Lettie VanSandt, who files frivolous lawsuits like some people go grocery shopping. When Lettie hits the big time, it is to late for her to receive her payday because she has died during a house fire. This is when things go topsy-turvy for the Stones and their practice. Add to this serious indiscretion by Lisa, her action may inadvertently cause their case to be lost, and in turn cause their whole world to be destroyed. Additionally, when push comes to shove even Joe uses semantics to fudge the truth when talking to the big corporation. At one point, I wanted to give this a five for originality and the realism incorporated into the story. However, Lisa's character is not the most likeable person. She runs the gamut of emotions about her bad choice and at times is almost flippant about it's impact. Her actions include getting her best friend to commit perjury on her behalf is extreme. However, it is a side of human nature that many people in American society would probably chose. What bothered me is that she has no consequences after the fact. Similarly, Joe rationalizes his decision to fib because he rarely charged Lettie in her legal cases (most attorney's would rather have dental work than assist for free). Additionally, everything got wrapped up in a tidy bow at the end, thus making a fairly realistic story end on an improbable note. This would make a good vacation read. The story takes you by the hand and leads you through tedious lifestyles in a small town to encounters with a huge drug corporation, its bigger than life CEO (think Branson or Madoff) and its panoply of players with increasing intensity as the story unfolds.

Beresford The only problem with finishing one of Judge Martin Clark's books is knowing that I will have to wait 3-4 years for the next one. I enjoyed The Jezebel Remedy just as much as his earlier three books if not more. It's a great story with likable main characters and a few to really dislike. While I finished the book in just a couple of days, I often found myself re-reading a few paragraphs that just gave me pure pleasure for the writing style or ability to make me feel really engaged in what was going on.I'm sure that Judge Clark's day job provides excellent insights for his novels. But I'd certainly be a happier reader if he would become a full-time author!

By PattyLouise The Jezebel RemedyByMartin ClarkWhat I knew about this book before I read it...Well...I knew that this book was written by a circuit court judge who really knows law. This book is about a husband and wife legal team who never quite get the big cases but who are expert at quirky and unique cases. The reason for this is simply their lifestyle and the area in Virginia where they live and practiced law.My thoughts after reading this book...It was a fun kind of intense and fast paced kind of book and...trust me...it's all about being quirky! Lettie is a client...a very quirky client...and all kinds of things go down because of a formula she is rumored to have invented. She brings a cat to Lisa and Joe's office, she lives in a trailer, she saves stray animals and people believe that she makes meth in her trailer! OMG!And when she is "presumed" dead? Well...that's when all the fun begins. And in the mean time...there are two cute kitties, a very sick dog, omelettes on a plane and an affair. And...life goes on...What I loved about this book...I think I really liked Lisa and Joe...they had issues, made mistakes but they were "in it to win it".What I did not love about this book...Perhaps a bit too long? I hated reading the court documents but...I got through it. You can, too.Final thoughts about this book...Readers who enjoy kind of unusual court antics and cases should enjoy this author's genuine wit and style.

The stories will strike a chord in your heart By Saradia Chatterjee Prompted Musings is a flash fiction compilation which includes four short stories and six poems. The short stories and two poems are written by J. R. Bournville. The poems “Allegro” and “A Minute Minute” are written by Sophia Renshaw; two other poems “O, Black and White” and “In My Mind” are written by Alex Douglas. The short stories fall under different genres. The opening story is about the plight of a man at the fag-end of his career while another story “Getting ahead” borders on science fiction. The poems have varied themes but the general mood is that of melancholy. Pathos pervades the atmosphere of the stories and poems.I was fairly impressed with two short stories—the very first one “Time to Retire” and “Getting ahead”. The poem “Manipulation” was somewhat to my liking. However, the other pieces of flash fiction failed to make a mark. The poems are expressions of listless and poignant thoughts but something is missing. J. R. Bournville’s writing technique succeeds in holding one’s attention till the last sentence. But I was not very satisfied after the stories ended. They do, however, have a literary flavor. You can give it a try for the stories, they strike a chord somewhere. All said, I’m going to rate this book three stars.

Fresh baked bread and a rusty nail is an anthology of short stories and an essay written by a retired college professor who discovered she could write when she enrolled in college as an adult student. Taking ideas from her own experience and phrases handed to her by others, she crafted these stories from her heart and shares her losses, successes and hopes, Critics have described her writing as Hemingway-like through her use of words and phrases that imply more than is on the page. Simple but complex. What they are saying about Karen's short stories: **"I have finished your book and I really liked it. I felt like I needed more smile emoticon it ended too soon smile emoticon" **"Loving your short stories BTW! Coffee and a great read makes Saturday perfect." **"Opposite Ends of the Table develops very believable and likable character, Mae, and skillfully uses select domestic details to bring the action alive for the reader." **"The short story "Fresh Baked Bread and a Rusty Nail is written in a deceptively simple style, for there are powerful moves in it, moves the adult rememberer is making-not the child. This interesting forcing of insight up through simple language is very hard to do, and this story does it well. How is it done? With almost perfect rhythmic sense from word to word. It is a long prose poem...full of tragedy that's real. The stronger the emotion, the less we can say...thus the Hemingway-like economy of statement." Karen Johnson describes her writing as pulling words and ideas from deep in her memory and from her longings for things she missed in her life. She currently lives in Mesa, Arizona with her dogs, Sassy Roo and Lily and her three cats, William, Fiona and Bear. She is a retired Geography professor and the mother of 2 sons and the grandmother of two.
