The stories will strike a chord in your heart By Saradia Chatterjee Prompted Musings is a flash fiction compilation which includes four short stories and six poems. The short stories and two poems are written by J. R. Bournville. The poems “Allegro” and “A Minute Minute” are written by Sophia Renshaw; two other poems “O, Black and White” and “In My Mind” are written by Alex Douglas. The short stories fall under different genres. The opening story is about the plight of a man at the fag-end of his career while another story “Getting ahead” borders on science fiction. The poems have varied themes but the general mood is that of melancholy. Pathos pervades the atmosphere of the stories and poems.I was fairly impressed with two short stories—the very first one “Time to Retire” and “Getting ahead”. The poem “Manipulation” was somewhat to my liking. However, the other pieces of flash fiction failed to make a mark. The poems are expressions of listless and poignant thoughts but something is missing. J. R. Bournville’s writing technique succeeds in holding one’s attention till the last sentence. But I was not very satisfied after the stories ended. They do, however, have a literary flavor. You can give it a try for the stories, they strike a chord somewhere. All said, I’m going to rate this book three stars.
