In this groundbreaking book, Arnold, a pastor for over forty years, provides fresh biblical insights into critical issues including the sacredness of sex, the struggle against temptation, the decision to remain single or to marry, child rearing, homosexuality, divorce and remarriage. Sex, God, and Marriage offers healing to anyone who has known discouragement or failure – and hope to anyone who is willing to take a bold new look at a topic of universal interest and concern.Unlike the vast majority of marriage books, Sex, God, and Marriage digs deeper than the usual issues and goes to the root: our relationship with God, and the defining power of that relationship over all others in our lives.

Sex, God, and Marriage, by Johann Christoph Arnold

Review A message that is desperately needed today . . . should be in the hands of every educator and teenager. (Alice von Hildebrand)Arnold writes simply, eloquently, and faithfully. His Sex, God, and Marriage is a relentless, biblical call for renewed Christian commitment. Advocates of accommodated, acculturated Christianity will find little comfort in these pages; struggling disciples, however, will be much encouraged. (William H. Willimon, Duke Divinity School)Clear, compassionate, uncompromisingly Christian, and straight from (and to) the heart. . . . Pretty close, I think, to what Jesus would say if he were to write a book about sex today – and probably as socially acceptable as he was. (Peter Kreeft, Boston College)I am very happy for this book and for its moral conviction. (Pope Benedict XVI)Arnold’s bold statement on the meaning of marriage clarifies for the sometimes confused church a concept central to Christian teaching. (Charles Edward Blake, Presiding Bishop, Church of God in Christ)In this book we find a message needed today in every part of the world. (Mother Teresa)Striking for its clear and penetrating presentation of simple (and yet immensely profound) biblical truths about human sexuality. I wish everyone could read this call to cut through the complications of modern life by a holy and Christ-like life. (William A. Dyrness, Fuller Theological Seminary)Simple and short, but deep, this is one of the best books on handling sexuality in a way that honors God. (J. I. Packer, Regent College)To advocate an ideal of sexual purity is perhaps the last American taboo. . . . This book provides a wise spiritual guide on how, and why, to lead such a life. (Paul C. Vitz, New York University)

About the Author People have come to expect sound advice from Johann Christoph Arnold, an award-winning author with over a million copies of his books in print in more than 20 languages. A noted speaker and writer on marriage, parenting, and end-of-life issues, Arnold is a senior pastor of the Bruderhof, a movement of Christian communities. With his wife, Verena, he has counseled thousands of individuals and families over the last forty years. His books include Why Forgive?, Rich in Years, Seeking Peace, Cries from the Heart, Be Not Afraid, and Why Children Matter. Arnold's message has been shaped by encounters with great peacemakers such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, César Chavez, and John Paul II. Together with paralyzed police officer Steven McDonald, Arnold started the Breaking the Cycle program, working with students at hundreds of public high schools to promote reconciliation through forgiveness. This work has also brought him to conflict zones from Northern Ireland to Rwanda to the Middle East. Closer to home, he serves as chaplain for the local sheriff's department. Born in Britain in 1940 to German refugees, Arnold spent his boyhood years in South America, where his parents found asylum during the war; he immigrated to the United States in 1955. He and his wife have eight children, 42 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. They live in upstate New York. To learn more visit www.richinyears.com

Tevington I was somewhat surprised to find that Johann Christoph Arnold's work is consistent with Catholic teaching on marriage/family, as articulated by Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body. The big difference is that this work is highly readable! Quite honestly, I was not expecting Arnold to articulate such truths as:* "we must be willing to speak out against the contraceptive mentality that has infected our society" (p. 135).* "Through the willingness to have children, to be fruitful and to multiply, and through the togetherness that reflects the unity of God with His creation and His people, marriage gives visible form to God's outpouring love" (p. 18).*"Only very few people in our day understand that marriage contains a mystery far deeper than the bond of husband and wife, that is the eternal unity of Christ with His church (p. 58).I heartily recommend that this work be utilized in Catholic catechesis, and that it be part of a parish library on marriage:* Casti Connubii,* Dignitas Connubii,* Humanae Vitae,* Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology Of The Body,* Man and Woman: Love & the Meaning of Intimacy,* Marriage: The Mystery of Faithful Love,* The NaPro Technology Revolution,* The Thrill of the Chaste,* The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce: A 25 Year Landmark Study,* What God Has Joined Together

A pastor's wisdom with genuine heart, a must-read By Julius L McCarter Johann Christoph Arnold's Sex, God & Marriage is a beautiful book, filled with pastoral wisdom for the Church. As a pastor, I regularly search for those texts that might be used in marriage counseling with couples, in pre-martial counseling, and with teens and pre-teens in the Church. Sex, God & Marriage meets all those needs, and more.In a world dominated by broken relationships and loneliness, Arnold offers a biblical vision of community, of wholeness, of sexuality, and of marriage. He provides pastoral insight into biblical traditions of purity and vulnerability. And his wisdom addresses so many questions -- from sexual temptation to homosexuality, from how to answer the question of whether or not to marry to parenting, from divorce to remarriage. He also has a pastoral wisdom about sensitive issues that often go unaddressed in other texts that I've used in the past -- particularly things like the perverseness of sex even within a marriage. So I found Sex, God & Marriage to be a genuine Christian vision of sex and marriage that challenged me.His very practical advice about parenting make this book a must-have for every Christian family.___________________I received a free copy of this book from Plough Publishing in exchange for this honest review.
