About the Author Carol E Anderson, SHRM-SCP, CCP, is the owner and principal of Anderson Performance Partners, LLC. Fuel your HR division to drive your business forward By JaneAnderson When I decide on my next nonfiction book to read, I pick up a copy and flip to the index, next the table of contents, then review the list of references. I like to see sources the author used in building her structure of thoughts and ideas. Carol Anderson uses a diverse set of credible sources in her book, Repurposing HR From a Cost Center to a Business Accelerator. Before I take my book to the cash stand, I also read enough of the introduction to know if this is a book that will speak to me. Repurposing HR From a Cost Center to a Business Accelerator qualifies. I chose this book because it breaks down traditional perceptions of HR, convincing us of what it is not and getting us to think in terms of the powerhouse HR should be. I liked the author’s approach to setting the record straight on the value HR brings to organizations. As Carol says, “The challenge to HR is to educate executives on the value of HR and to show our potential…” Then she goes on to offer in great detail how to effectively become a business partner, investing in human capital and develop into a thriving business accelerator, not just a cost center.In this book we are introduced to a RoadMap which puts human resource competencies into practice. Since it is org chart agnostic, the RoadMap can be used regardless of team structure. In other words, the RoadMap dissolves organizational silos in favor of investing in the multiple roles of HR in the business. This whole idea of the RoadMap dovetails perfectly with another concept called the StopOver. Each StopOver is a unique role played by HR and the author covers them with superior insight. In fact, the implication of the StopOver taxonomy suggests performing a through, methodical assessment of what goes on in that role. “StopOvers are times for collaboration, resource and knowledge sharing, reflection, restoration and recovery.”The StopOvers covered in this book, are Strategy, Analysis, Risk Management, Sales and Marketing, Investor, Resource Steward, Advocate, and Trusted Advisor. Each chapter is devoted to one of the StopOvers. Readers learn the definition and purpose of each StopOver, consider planned Outcomes, and identify Objectives. A set of Key Questions with prompts to spur deeper analysis of the role are embedded into each chapter with further action items appropriately stated as Work Products That May Emerge. Certainly throughout this process role development and knowledge will be enhanced. Each chapter also delves into skills and strengths team members will realize in Knowledge to Develop and Behaviors to Strengthen.The concepts shared in this book are highly researched and have been practically applied. I like what I read in one of the final chapters of the book. As a former HR team member, I couldn’t agree more. “The role of human resources is different than any other overhead department role because of the vantage point “everything people.” HR is like the threads that weave through every aspect of the fabric of an organization. This book is your RoadMap to make the most of it.

Anderson tells you why and how and she's got the background and real life experiences to support it. This is an easy read and an ideal conversation starter.

Having served in other capacities beside HR, I can see how important it is for HR to be a business leader and to have an understanding of all of the moving parts of the business. As I have read the book, I have had conversations with my staff about repurposing our HR department. This book has great ideas on how to have open dialog with your business leaders. Showing a genuine interest in the business health of the organization. HR folks seem to always be caught up in the webs of employee relations and other corporate problems that sneak up on us. This book offers great advice and solutions on being able to speak to business leaders and to show that everything that HR does is for the well-being (in every aspect) of the company.I have shared the book with my HR Leaders and we will be working together on building our plan. Every HR professional needs to not only have this book in their library but actually use it. It is not for those that want to continue down the same road of insanity. It is a hard road of change but well worth it. Thanks Carol!Steve
