It was the end. Subienkow had travelled a long trail of bitterness and horror, homing like a dove for the capitals of Europe, and here, farther away than ever, in Russian America, the trail ceased. He sat in the snow, arms tied behind him, waiting the torture. He stared curiously before him at a huge Cossack, prone in the snow, moaning in his pain. The men had finished handling the giant and turned him over to the women. That they exceeded the fiendishness of the men, the man’s cries attested.

Jack London's little-known short story classics By David Hann This collection of short stories contains the well-known classic, "To Build a Fire," and that story deserves its place at the summit of American short stories. What the collection Lost Face has, however, are several other Jack London short stories that are sure to hold your attention. The title story, "Lost Face," depicts how a man's ability to keep his head in a dire situation saves him from a fate worse than death. My personal favorite in this collection is "That Spot," a great story for anyone who has owned or had to deal with a difficult dog. The narrator of "That Spot" remarks that there was something about Spot that made him uneasy, and the reader soon understands what that meant. This is a great collection of short stories, one which I recommend to anyone who likes Jack London's writing.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Much more than just "To Build a Fire" By Karl Janssen Lost Face is a collection of seven short stories by Jack London, all of which take place in Alaska or the Yukon Territory around the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. It is most notable for being the collection which contains "To Build a Fire," the classic story of a man trudging along the Yukon Trail, alone but for his dog, who finds himself struggling for survival against the 75-below-zero cold. It is London's most famous and widely read piece of writing, about as perfect as a short story can be, and sure to be read in junior high school English classes for centuries to come.In addition to this renowned masterpiece, Lost Face is loaded with unexpected gems. I had never heard of the other six stories in this collection, and I was greatly surprised at how good they are. By the time Lost Face was published in 1910, London had already published five collections of Klondike tales, ranging from the excellent (The Faith of Men) to the OK (Love of Life). In the latter book, London showed signs of exhausting the subject matter and running out of ideas, but here in Lost Face he comes up with seven very solid, original, exciting tales. The title story, "Lost Face," recalls the odyssey of a Polish freedom fighter who is imprisoned by the Russians, then escapes from the mines of Siberia and ends up in Alaska. He finds himself faced with torture and death at the hands of a Native American tribe, and desperately tries to come up with a way out of his predicament. "That Spot" is a comical tale in which the narrator recalls a dog he owned during his prospecting days in the Yukon; a magnificent, powerful, keenly intelligent beast who absolutely refused to perform the slightest bit of useful labor. In "Flush of Gold," two travelers on the sled dog trail stop at a cabin on Surprise Lake, where dwells a beautiful, mysterious woman who pines for a former lover. As one of the men relates the woman's history to his companion, the reader discovers the bizarre love story that darkens her past. "The Wit of Porportuk" tells of an Alaskan Indian chief, famous for his generosity and extravagance, who runs up big debts to a miserly money lender. When the time comes to collect the debt, the lender, Porportuk, sees it as an opportunity to claim the chief's beautiful daughter El-Soo for his mate. The girl, however, being very clever and well educated, comes up with a scheme to avoid becoming the greedy old man's property. Neither party's plans prove entirely successful, however, and just when you think you know where the story's going, it turns in a shocking and unexpected direction.Comparing the stories of Lost Face to London's Klondike tales of a decade earlier, one really gets a sense of how much he progressed as a writer. These seven tales are rendered in smooth and beautiful prose, skillfully plotted, and remarkably vivid in their depiction of time and place. Reading Lost Face transports you to the bygone world of the exotic North. Through London's eyes, it's a wild and unpredictable place where the powerful beauty of nature is ever present and invigorating adventure is commonplace.

Jack London's superb storytelling shines through, and each little short story in the book means something. I highly recommend this book. One of the reasons I admire Jack London as a writer, is because of his ability to capture your imagination, and transport you to his character's settings and world. "Lost Face" is a great example of that.

You can tell that the author used auto correction when he typed this because so many words are not right. Like space suite instead of space suit she fell down a raven instead of ravine, a an and the was missing from many sentences. And some sentences just were not complete more like word salads. Made for a really difficult reading. The story meanders along, set in the 1960's, 3 NASA astronauts land on Mars to get samples and see what's there and then return to earth. The ending was anticlimactic and the author tried to add a little romance but it really didn't work. Should have just left it out. Also I'm assuming that the author is from the United Kingdom because some of the slang would not be used by Americans. The one thing that was really interesting was the shadow men I wished that the author would have spent more time fleshing out these characters. He had a good start with them but needed more to round out the story. If we could give 1/2 stars I would have rated the story at 21/2. There is some good bones to the story it just needs to be reworked and edited.

The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was a locations issue. Being a native New Yorker there's no way to get around that quickly (whether or not you're immortal). That didn't stop me from enjoying the story and I can't wait to read more of Lumi's adventures.

The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception, by Max Heindel

About the Author About the Author: "Max Heindel - born Carl Louis von Grasshoff in Aarhus, Denmark on July 23, 1865 - was a Christian occultist, astrologer, and mystic. He died on January 6, 1919 at Oceanside, California, United States. He was born of the royal family of Von Grasshoffs, who were connected with the German Court during the lifetime of Prince Bismark. The father of Max Heindel, Francois L. von Grasshoff, migrated, when quite a young man, to Copenhagen, Denmark, where he married a Danish woman of noble birth. They had two sons and one daughter. The oldest of these sons was Carl Louis Von Grasshoff, who later adopted the pen name of Max Heindel. The father died when the eldest son was six years of age, leaving the mother with her three small children in very straitened circumstances. His infancy was lived in genteel poverty. His mother's self-denial was carried to an extreme in order that the small income would suffice that her sons and daughter could have private tutors so that they might take their place in society as members of nobility. At the age of sixteen years, refusing a foreseeable future among the nobility class, he left home to enter the ship-yards at Glasgow, Scotland in order to learn the engineering profession. He was soon chosen as Chief Engineer of a trading steamer, position which took him in trips all over the world and gave him a great deal of knowledge of the world and its people. For a number of years he was Chief Engineer on one of the large passenger steamers of the Cunard Line plying between America and Europe. From 1895 to 1901, he was an ill luck consulting engineer in New York City and during this time he married, the marriage being terminated by the death of his wife in 1905. A son and two daughters were born of this marriage. In 1903, Max Heindel moved to Los Angeles, California, in order to look for a job. Meanwhile, due to his earlier years that had been full of sorrow and to sad events in his own life, an increasingly intense desire to understand the cause of the sorrows and sufferings of humanity began to grow within him, as well as a desire to help alleviate them. Giving a new course to his life, he became interested in the study of metaphysics and, after attending lectures by the theosophist C.W. Leadbeater, he joined the Theosophical Society of Los Angeles, of which he was ..." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception shines light on some really brilliant ideas about life and its whys. Not all theories are correct but, interesting and mentally stimulating just the same. Great book for some deep thought and reflection. I would recommend this book to any truth seeker. Its rich in provocative thought and has an emotional smoothness to it. I don't know if "The Rosicrucian Fellowship" in Oceanside, CA is still in existence. This is a book to be studied, as it was a text book for The Rosicrucian Fellowships courses. Gibberish means you didn't take the time to figure the secret language.

Wonderful study material and reference book By Jeremy As a long time student myself I can say after thoroughly reading even one chapter that this book is invaluable to the serious student of the mysteries.. The fact that there are two ratings heavily weighing in the negative with no real value to them is somewhat misleading. A three star rating by someone stating they have not even started reading the book and a two star rating by a skeptic who "skimmed through it".. It does not really help others to read reviews by people who have either not read nor understand the content of the book now does it? Just saying..

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Good, time tested information. By G. Fritz I have read and re-read this book over the years. It was handed down by an older member of my family. Since it is written in an older style of prose, it is a little dense to our modern "sound-bite" ears. It's chock-full of esoteric information. Much of it is common to other ancient texts and teachings. The Rosicrucians have a more Western approach to this subject matter, meaning it is less frilly and is more of a how-to-do and how-it-is style of teaching. If you have read any of the more popular modern books on esoteric knowledge, you will have no problem with this book and will find it full of information. It's a sort of Heaven and Earth handbook.

Review “From the shadows that dwell in some of the most creative, and gifted minds around, emerges a collection of short stories that will skulk across the footplate of literature for many years to come. Exigencies is the cloak thrown over the world, to show us that in darkness we can still find beauty, and will forever serve as a keepsake to great writing.”—Craig Wallwork, author of The Sound of Loneliness“These pages house some of the most exciting writers you’ve never heard of—yet. They make the mundane terrifying, the poignant macabre, the violent touching. The only thing you won't find is the expected, because these stories will move the ground beneath your feet. Brace yourself."—Nik Korpon, author of Stay God

From "Wilderness" by Letitia Trent:The airport was small, squat like a compound, its walls interrupted in regular intervals by tall, shaded windows. When Krista looked out the windows, the sky seemed slate-grey and heavy, but when the front doors opened, she remembered that it was really blue and cloudless outside. She was early for her flight back to New Haven. She liked to arrive at the very earliest times that the flight website recommended. She was prepared to wait, liked it even. It was calming to have nothing to do and nowhere she had to be. She had brought a book about the history of wilderness and America, something left over from college that she had never read. She liked the cover, a picture of a Pilgrim family, small and sickly, their clothes black and heavy on their bony bodies, facing an expanse of trees so tall and green you could see nothing beyond them. She underlined phrases in the book out of old college habit: Wilderness remained a place of evil and spiritual catharsis. Any place in which a person feels stripped, lost, or perplexed, might be called a wilderness. She shared a red, plush armrest with a large woman who had almost incandescent, butter-blonde hair. Her skin was so tan that it reminded Krista of a stain. Coffee on blonde wood. The blonde had apparently just come from a trip to Maine. She told an older woman next to her—an even larger woman with tight pin-curls and wire-rimmed glasses, wearing those boxy, pleated shorts that middle-aged women often wear on holidays—about her trip. The blonde had stayed in the cutest hotel. Her entire room had been done up all nautical. The other woman nodded in agreement with everything the blonde said, as if she had had an identical experience.Krista watched the airport attendants and one airport policeman patrol the area. They sometimes stepped into the waiting room and observed the crowd with what appeared to be either worry or constipation (they pressed their lips together, their hands on their hips, and blew the air from their mouths as if making silent raspberries). They had a vague air of agitation. She watched them carefully for signs of what might be wrong, but they revealed nothing in their pacing. Nobody else seemed to notice. On Krista’s left, opposite the blonde, was a family, a mother and two children separated from her by one seat. The mother was thin and loud and wore shorts with many utilitarian pockets and a simple tank shirt without a bra. She seemed infinitely capable, as if she ran her own business or perhaps even managed some kind of sports team. Krista admired thin, efficient women like this, women who wore comfortable, rubber-soled sandals and clothing with enough functional pockets. The woman and her children all spoke on their individual cell phones, all telling somebody variations on the news that they would arrive soon, that it was only thirty minutes until boarding. An announcement crackled over the loudspeakers, the sound delivered in one chunk of indiscernible static.Krista looked around the room, hoping for the scraps of somebody else’s conversation to explain what had just been said.Plane’s delayed for an hour, the blonde said to her husband, who had also missed it. Storms down in Boston.A general grumble rose. People shifted in their seats and took out their recently stowed cell phones. The blonde woman called her husband’s name, which Krista immediately forgot.Phone me up a pizza, she told him. I won’t eat that shit from the vending machine.

A great anthology By Jay Slayton-joslin If a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, a short fiction anthology is the chain that holds the drawbridge to the kingdom of great story telling against the assault of mediocre fiction; thankfully, there is not one weak entry in Exigencies. This may be because Richard Thomas is calling the shots, a writer and editor as talented as he is productive, having already proved himself with The New Black anthology, Exigencies is a daring ride into the best among contemporary neo-noir writers.Full review at Cultured VUltures

I know a few writers involved but most were unfamiliar, yet their voices were strong and fearless. Highly recommended. Here's my official blurb: From the shadows that dwell in some of the most creative, and gifted minds around, emerges a collection of short stories that will skulk across the footplate of literature for many years to come. Exigencies is the cloak thrown over the world, to show us that in darkness we can still find beauty, and will forever serve as a keepsake to great writing.

Great stories can be followed by mediocre ones, even bad ones. "Exigencies" is a neo-noir collection of short stories that might leave you a bit depressed about the dark side of the human condition but also elated by the language used to describe that sad condition. The opening story, "Wilderness," is rooted in individual helplessness in a situation that overruns them. The baton of crafting such a story has been handed from Kafka to Shirley Jackson to Letitia Trent. The ending story, the soul sucking "Blood Price" by Axel Taoari, is not for sunny days on the beach with a gentle breeze, a wondrous mate, and a bottle of Corona, unless of course you break the bottle and slash the throat of your mate because the waves told you to do it. In between, are a collection of exceptional stories for those who enjoy reading about the darker side of life.If you wanted Bambi's mom to live, don't lift the cover of this anthology. In here, Bambi's mom would live, but eat Bambi."My Mother's Condition" also harkens back to Kafka and other magical realistic writers. It is my personal favorite as I look forward to the twilight years of my life by looking back at my parents. Only one story in here truly didn't appeal to the noir side of my mind that I occasionally let out of the corner of the room. If you love short stories, this is an upper shelf four. If you love short stories with a darker edge, this is a solid five, as is my rating.
