The Stranger You Know (Thorndike Large Print Crime Scene), by Jane Casey

From Booklist *Starred Review* A serial killer is targeting single women in London, and Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is included in the investigating team. But her colleague, politically incorrect and misogynistic Detective Inspector Josh Derwent, is definitely excluded: the murderer’s MO of strangling his victims and removing their eyes echoes the killing of Derwent’s first love, Angela Poole, 20 years earlier. Although Derwent was cleared of that crime and still tries to solve it, he fits the profile of the current killer and is considered a suspect. But not by Maeve, who disobeys orders from the top not to communicate with Derwent, with whom she has a prickly relationship, as she probes the cold-case Poole murder. Although one aspect of the killings is wrapped up rather hastily, this is more focused than the three earlier entries in the Maeve Kerrigan series, all solid police procedurals with exceptionally well-drawn characters whose relationships continue to develop in each entry. Derwent, a brilliant copper in Maeve’s eyes despite his numerous personality defects, serves as a foil and balance for her, and, with him at the center here, this novel attains further complexity in the interplay of the police-force members. Prime crime fiction. --Michele Leber

Review

“[A] dramatic, expertly crafted thriller.” ―Entertainment Weekly (Must List)

“[An] exciting thriller…Casey's growing fan base will snatch up the latest entry in what has turned out to be a can't-wait-for-the-next-one series.” ―Library Journal

“Maeve Kerrigan [is] a fascinating and plausible character…She is no superwoman, she lacks supernatural acuity, and she doesn't even have so much as a single dragon tattoo. What she has is persistence, integrity and emotional intelligence, and a very deft way of insinuating herself into a reader's affections.” ―The Irish Independent (UK)

“The Maeve Kerrigan [novels are] all solid procedurals with exceptionally well-drawn characters whose relationship continue to develop in each entry. Derwent, a brilliant copper in Maeve's eyes despite his numerous personality defects, serves as a foil and balance for her, and, with him at the center here, this novel attains further complexity in the interplay of the police-force members. Prime crime fiction.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“A captivating police procedural heavy on characterization that will keep readers up late into the night. Maeve is a character to love; she's easy to relate to as she holds her own with humor and snappy dialogue. The voice of the novel is unique and captivating.” ―RT Book Reviews (4½ stars)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. the best Maeve Kerrigan so far By Jane Easterly The Stranger You Know is the fourth book in the Maeve Kerrigan police procedural series from Jane Casey, and I think it may be the best so far. The first book was a great start, but seemed a bit clichéd, and there was a lot of introductory material. The second and third were even better, with a lot of character development and a more complex case. The pacing of The Stranger You Know is terrific – I had a hard time putting the book down. The narrative is a great blend of character development and action. I really wanted to know what would happen next, both with the crime and the regular characters.Maeve Kerrigan is a Detective Constable with some complicated relationships. She is commitment shy but in a relationship with another cop, a terrific guy who is not afraid to say “I love you” even though Maeve won’t reply in turn. Rob is out of the country on a work-related trip most of this book, so the focus is not on their romance but on Maeve’s relationship with coworkers.Maeve has Irish parents but works in London, and as a woman in a male-dominated field, she feels like an outsider. She started out hero-worshipping her boss, Chief Superintendent Godley (know as “God” around the office), but has since found out some things about him that sent him tumbling off the pedestal. She could get him fired, and he knows it; although she keeps his secrets, her knowledge affects her interactions with him. She is often paired with Detective Inspector Josh Derwent, who comes off as a jerk and a misogynistic pig. In The Stranger You Know, we get to know Derwent a lot better. He is taken off a case and isn’t happy about it. There is a serial killer in London, and Derwent was the prime suspect in a similar case 20 years before. Maeve and Derwent spend a lot of time together in this book, in challenging situations that force them to get to know each other better. We are thrown a lot of red herrings, but I expect that in a mystery series. The investigation moves relentlessly on, with Maeve right in the middle, disobeying orders and taking unlikely sides. There’s a plot twist at the end that will no doubt play into future books in the series. I can’t wait.If you like British police procedurals and well-paced crime thrillers with lots of character development, I recommend Jane Casey. Although one could pick up The Stranger You Know without having read the first three, I recommend starting with The Burning.I read an advance reader copy provided by Netgalley.

Fourth time's the charm By Rich Stoehr Jane Casey just keeps on getting better and better at this, and 'The Stranger You Know' might be her best book yet.Maeve Kerrigan, a Detective Constable on the London police force, has grown a lot over the last four books. She's more confident in the face of the blatant sexist attitudes of her partner, Josh Derwent. In 'The Stranger You Know,' though, Kerrigan is brought in to investigate a series of grisly murders and mutilations, while Derwent himself is being cut out of the investigation...because he's a suspect. In her mannerisms, her faults, her strengths, and her quirks, Kerrigan is a character that's both familiar and unique. In this book, we see Casey's growing confidence as a writer too. Here she takes the character dynamic she's spent three books shaping and shakes it up, giving more depth to Kerrigan and Derwent and each of the supporting characters. We get to see more of Kerrigan on her own, not depending so much on her boyfriend to come and save the day. Also, Casey depends less on gimmicky writing here (like the odd perspective shifts of her previous books) and more on a steady, consistent style that keeps you reading.I read most of 'The Stranger You Know' in the space of a single day, and I was left both satisfied and looking forward to the next story. Simply put, I can't wait to to see what's next for Maeve Kerrigan.

Wonderful Series that Delivers By Ria Darling I just started the Maeve Kerrigan series this summer and I read them in order (The Burning, the Reckoning, The Last Girl & The Stranger You Know) and I'm awed. So many British series with female detectives promise so much, specifically that they're the next Jane Tenneyson series you've been waiting for, but Casey delivers a terrific character and mystery with Kerrigan. As a detective working with Major Crimes for the MET in London, Kerrigan still has a lot to learn-she has to deal with comments from her (male) colleagues, how to be diplomatic with superior officers, and to balance her personal life and work life. It's acknowledged that Kerrigan is talented as a detective but that she has a lot tol learn. This is the 4th in the series and Kerrigan is working through issues with her personal and work partners-while trying to catch a serial killer who strangles single women. I don't want to give too much away but there are internal issues with her boss and colleagues which make this case a challenge. While I have read the series, I have to say I think this one (as opposed to The Last Girl) is the easiest to pick up without any background on the series

It is becoming more and more a matter of regret that a larger amount of systematic effort was not established in early years for the gathering and preservation of the folk-lore of the Hawaiians. The world is under lasting obligations to the late Judge Fornander, and to Dr. Rae before him, for their painstaking efforts to gather the history of this people and trace their origin and migrations; but Fornander’s work only has seen the light, Dr. Rae’s manuscript having been accidentally destroyed by fire. The early attempts of Dibble and Pogue to gather history from Hawaiians themselves have preserved to native and foreign readers much that would probably otherwise have been lost. To the late Judge Andrews we are indebted for a very full grammar and dictionary of the language, as also for a valuable manuscript collection of meles and antiquarian literature that passed to the custody of the Board of Education.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Readable...revolves around relevant themes By Rajalakshmi Prithviraj Empty fists have nothing within them, some say. But for me, they are generally filled with hope. Read an anthology of stories by Mangalam Shiva. The theme for each story was based on important issues. Each plot is relevant in today's social scenario. Dowry, neglect, abuse, you name it and it was there. A segment was narrated through the eyes of a dog, which is a novel concept. Characters chosen were Indians and could be easily associated with.Yet, there was something amiss. The author attempts to highlight social issues- great, but narration was a big let down. It got repetitive in some places. The tone of narration was monotonous with the tendency to get misconstrued as advisory rather than story. The choice of words lent an impersonal touch to it. Also, Chapter numbering or changes in scenes within a story were confusing at times. The concept were good but characters were not very strong to be able to leave a lasting imprint on the readers' mind.I read once, and took a real long break before I read it again. Sadly, its impact was the same. I truly wished that the author had tried getting a good editor, maybe then the choice of words and language would have been more appealing. The same stories, had they been translated into Tamil or any other Indian language, would have enhanced narration. I would have given it a three or four stars but the narration and language usage were a serious letdown. Also, the books I have rated three or four stars are way too superior to this anthology in terms of language and character portrayals. It is definitely unintentional (I am sure no author would knowingly do it) but inspite of the author putting in his best efforts, there are missing elements. I really felt helpless when giving it two stars, but narration was not powerful enough to match up to the issues being highlighted. Not that I possess thorough knowledge of Her Majesty's language, yet, my assessment is on the basis of my understanding only.To sum up, the anthology is readable at least once, especially for the relevant social themes they address. To reiterate, the themes chosen for each story are powerful, but sadly, the narrative style was bit of a disappointment.P.S- Being an optimist, I am sure, the next attempt would definitely be way ahead of this book. As is said, where there is a will, there is a way.

An honorable idea, but a missed execution By Lashaan Balasingam Empty Fists is a compilation of diverse short stories about the dreadful crimes that Indian residents encounter for many years. There isn't a single problem that was overlooked, from child molestation, rape to murder, you're sure to find it all. These extremely short stories are separated in two major sections. The first one covers the story of a dog with a God complex that believes that humans underestimate animals in more ways than one. As his adventures unfolds, he becomes a hero through the actions that are deemed heroic more often than not. The second part is composed of several tales of individuals and their lives as they each experience some of the most painful and inhuman acts done to Man since ages ago.I don't want to come across as rude or distasteful, but here's the thing. I completely and utterly understand the problems that India knows, especially women. The situation of woman has evolved since a couple of years, but there are still ways to go. The incidents of rape, molestation, sexual deviance and murder that goes on in the country as if it was the norm still cling onto my moral compass and has me wondering what is we need to do to bring change to this cruel world. These events are eye-opening and brings several organisms to work hard to fight these acts anchored in society and in countless numbers of individual's daily lives. Excessive drinking, gambling, corruption, everything that feeds the evil in man is questionable and are made aware to society. I greatly appreciate Mangalam Shiva in attempting to expose these terrible crimes that ruin lives.I must start off by mentioning that the structure of these short stories don't make sense. Why is the book separated in two big parts? What's the link between the dog and the human tales? If the two part were purposely separated, what does the dog stories explain in the definition of the title? Reading through the book had me wondering if this wasn't just a compilation of two different written productions in order to form a book instead of two. And the result is sure to be confusion and a destruction of flow. This definitely doesn't help the reader stay hooked to the novels, it has them wondering what the author was thinking. The structure of each story was also repetitive and unoriginal. Sentence structure and vocabulary suffered the same fate. The most important consequence of this is the lack of emotion and the capacity of the author to convey emotions properly. Every single character could've easily be seen as robots. Every single one of them were monotone and characters were nothing more than flat. Reading through the stories, I felt like every character was stating raw facts. It didn't matter if you were a rape victim or a sexually molested child, every single character would talk to each other like an equivalent android, without feelings or life. After all, emotions need to not only been seen through dialogue but in actions too. This greatly destroyed my capacity to be absorbed by the story and to feel emotions myself.Another element of the novel that had me vexed was the dog. When first introduced as a street dog, he claimed to have an infallible sense of smell. Smell so amazing that it could tell good from evil. I was truly intrigued to see the stories unravel through the eyes of a dog that would be a hero, a hero that humans couldn't be. It is only when facing problems that I've came to realize the aggressive, almost murderous, decisions that Raju the dog makes. If anything, this dog has a God complex that doesn't bring me to understand its actions or feel emotionally engaged to the moral of the story in any shape or form. The first short story will definitely serve my case. If you don't want to be spoiled, you can skip to the next paragraph. And so, following a suspicious ugly smell emanating from a man that seeks to run away with an innocent woman and whatever amount of cash she has, the dog follows the man until the bus where he suddenly feels that bad things will happen to the woman after the mysterious questions regarding the amount of money brought by the girl. That's where his above-human decision-making brings him to jump on the man and slice his guts out and send him in a coma. Now, how is a violent act like this from a stray dog not condemned? Is preventing an action that isn't even sure to happen (betrayal and infidelity of the man to his wife) an excuse to almost killing him?In short, Empty fists has an honorable purpose behind it but the execution was way off. In order to convince readers to see the horrible acts that are committed in India and to bring them to feel an urge to change things, a different, more consistent storyline would be necessary. It's by giving readers the chance to attach to the characters and the plot that they'll be able to see how change is necessary and can be achieved. It is not by continuously bombarding readers with the word “calamity” that you'll convince them that your chapters were successful. It is in my most humblest opinion that the short stories need more editing and focus in order to achieve their ultimate goals. In fact, the only short story that was intriguing in its idea and worth developing was the one with a journalist. Having a journalist to reach your audience would've been an amazing path to take for Empty Fists. A protagonist who spreads the news while trying to share the truth behind the crimes committed all around India, or the world, unlike the media nowadays, is a brilliant idea. I truly wish the best of luck to the author and his future novels. Hopefully, Empty Fists will serve as a learning curve to a revolutionary novel.Yours truly,LashaanLashaan & Trang | Bloggers and Book ReviewersOfficial blog: http://bookidote.wordpress.com

A collection of short stories reflecting on the different aspects of life faced by every individual. There is love, friendship, struggle, even loss. This is a collection of stories that will truly touch your heart from beginning to end.The first story is very unique, it’s one of the best of the collection because of its narration. This story is actually told through the eyes of a dog. Honestly, it is one of the most sincere and kindest tales I’ve ever read. We follow a ‘street’ dog’s journey as he pursues justice on behalf of the many humans he encounters. The audience witnesses life through the eyes of an animal—a very unique experience. Shiva does a great job at working out the dog’s voice. His use of vocabulary and description is genuine and detailed enough to give us a good view of life on four legs. One of the best parts of Siva’s writing is his ability to convey emotion through each of his characters. Even though there’s a mix of male, female, or even animal, I still felt something tug at my heart with every story. A different message was conveyed in each tale but it wasn’t hard to find them and to learn from them. Shiva paints a very plain and clear picture of what he wants to say and he does it in such a way that readers of all ages can enjoy his work. One of the stories in Empty Fists is told from the point of view of a male who has actually died already. That’s one of the most dynamic things about Shiva’s writing, he truly thinks outside the box when he tells each story. This character is not a ghost, he isn’t supernaturally speaking to us, he is actually dead and he’s reflecting on his life. Being stuck in his head was a very emotional ride for me. I was faced with many different philosophical questions and metaphors that brought out the true meaning of the story. With lines like, “I arrived in this world with clenched fists and I leave with empty fists.” You can really see how much heart was put into this piece. Every line has a meaning, each greater than the last. Every story challenges you to see things from more than one point of view and to reflect on your life in comparison to the lives of all the characters.Being part of the story is something I really enjoyed from this book. I wouldn’t say that I was an ‘active’ reader, but I was definitely engaged and emotionally involved. Shiva’s writing captivated me with its honest detail and its heartwarming characters. There was much sadness in this anthology but amidst that sorrow were many smiles. Many little moments of happiness came from the characters and happiness invoked from the outcomes of the stories.Probably the best part of Empty Fists was that it’s about minority characters. I got to see parts of a unique culture not seen so often in American fiction. It was refreshing to hear from a voice that didn’t come from someone with beautiful blonde hair and sky blue eyes. I’m a sucker for minority characters so this was an instant plus for me.This book is a must-read for audiences of all ages. It’s full of warmth and meaning that can be interpreted in many different ways. Each reader will find their own favorite parts and their own memorable moments within the lines of this wonderfully written piece. Not only is it well-written but it’s also well-edited. I don’t think I found single mistake while I read which made it all the more enjoyable. You will love this book right from the start.*I received a free copy of Empty Fists in exchange for an honest review*

Have you ever felt like quitting? Ever asked yourself, “Why am I doing this? Is this even worth anything?” Even those who are faithful and have learned their lessons can still sometimes come to the end of the road. We can wonder what those faithful years of service were all about. Who were they for? What was the point? We can lose sight of the big picture in the midst of our faithful service. It isn’t hard to do. The writer to theHebrews reminds us in chapter 6 verse 10 that even if we lose sight, God never will. He writes: “For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” This little book has been written to help those serving behind the scenes to find strength, hope and wisdom to carry on in the ministries that God has given them. Drawing principles from the Bible and examples from many years of service, the author hopes to encourage and support those who so often work for the Lord behind the scenes where no one usually notices.

There is no better way to live your life than by-example. People notice and will respond when they see examples of selfless service. When the Holy Spirit whispers in our ear, prods and nudges you to do something, "we should listen". I bought 4 copies and gave them to my family members. I highly recommend this book. 'Well done, good and faithful servant!"

He writes in a "no frills" and very straight ahead manner, and gets to the heart of issues very quickly and powerfully. I am currently using his book in a small group designed for those in ministry, and his points and examples are provoking a lot of good conversation and healthy self examination. I can't recommend this book enough. Well done Rich.

Especially of an encouragement to those who are on pastoral staff. The subtitle is "Encouragement for those working behind the scenes."Pastor Rich Chaffin spent many years as a janitor before God called him to be a pastor. It's a wonderful book and I think you should read it!

“If you think you can come back here and throw yourself on my mercy, you are quite wrong.” After their husbands perish in a fishing boat accident, Connie Cross determines to follow her mother-in-law, Annabelle, from Southern California to Tennessee. Her misgivings begin as they cross the bridge over the muddy Mississippi River. In their new town, where living conditions are far below their previous expectations, they must set up a household and hunt for work to survive. Thanks to the kindness of Annabelle’s handsome, young cousin, life begins to settle down. But Connie has a secret that could uproot them once again.   Inspired by the Book of Ruth, Annabelle’s Ruth is a 1950’s era “Ruth” story, set in western Tennessee.  How will Connie adapt to her new life amid the cotton farms, racial tension, and culture shock?

By Sharon Coleman There is a moment, with every great book, when you realize you are just a chapter or two from the end and you are conflicted. You don't want to finish it because that means the end of your 'relationship' with the characters. But you can't put it down because, even though you think you know how it will end, you HAVE to find out HOW. Oh what a sad moment that is! Betty Thomason Owens is a master at creating that moment. She is one of the very few authors whose books I will read more than once. I have read 'Lady of the Haven' and 'A Gathering of Eagles' each at least three times. I have a feeling Annabelle's Ruth is due for a re-read, oh... about now. This author has a unique knack for weaving a story around Biblical stories, principles and truths that I absolutely love.I highly recommend this book. It is to the story of Ruth what "Redeeming Love" is to the story of Hosea.

Beautifully Written By Virginia Smith The tone and atmosphere of this Appalachian-feel story was so realistic I felt like I was living in 1950's Tennessee. The dialect was perfect, the setting beautifully described, and the characters completely identifiable. As the title indicates, this is a modern day retelling of the story of Ruth. The Naomi character is named Annabelle, and the Ruth character is Connie. That's the overall story, but in the details this is a story about relationships. Connie's love for her mother-in-law, her love for her husband and unborn child, and her growing love for another man.I've read several of Owens' books, and I think this is the best.

The story of Ruth in Tennessee By Always Reading Half-Hawaiian Connie Cross married an American sailor when he was based in Hawaii, and he moves her to San Diego. One day he, his father, and brother, die in a boating accident. Connie's sister-in-law returns to her parents' home, but Connie can't go back to Hawaii. She joins mother-in-law in a move to Annabelle's hometown in Tennessee. They have a rough time at first. The first relative Annabelle approaches would love to throw them out of the state. His brother Alton offers them a rundown cabin that he modernizes. Despite being pregnant, Connie toils in Alton's fields, picking cotton. A sweet modern version of the Biblical story of Ruth.

By Zeke a good negotiating skill is an ability which unfortunately uncommon in everyone; some is lucky to have developed this skill and have used it in many successful ways. others are ill-fated enough to suck in this department which sometimes leads them to have a bad argument and miscommunications. me being the latter, is very bless to have encountered this book. it has an essential content which is very applicable not just in the business aspect but also in dealing with different kinds of people in different kinds of situation. Ethan Jarvis - the author is right, we use negotiation in every aspect of our lives: may it be in the market place, school, workplace or even our own home with our husband and kids. the book talks about the different kinds of negotiation as well as its difference between manipulation. it is well - written, plain and simple which makes it easy to read and follow. I would highly recommend this book to all, it is so helpful and relevant. this book is for keeps.

It appears that few things in life are not a matter of negotiation and we negotiate all the time in simple everyday situations. You want the person on the other side of the table to be aware of what you want and asking them what it is that they want and then talking it over until all wants and needs are fulfilled. The author goes into the types of negotiators: Accommodating, Collaborating, Compromising, Evasive and Competitive and describes how a negotiation unfolds for each of those types. He shows the difference between Capitulation, Surrender and Compromise, and his definition of Negotiation is achieving your goals without having to resort to conflict and giving up anything more than a reasonable and fair exchange to what you are getting in return, in other words a Win/Win result. Well written and well researched treatment of this misunderstood strategy.

My favorites are the art of questioning and handling objections. I believe asking the right questions and handling objections properly while making a deal are the most difficult part of negotiating. The tips and techniques provided in here, most specifically about the basics of negotiating are surely helpful to me which I believe will also be very useful to anyone who are involved in different business ventures, who most of the time negotiate with a lot of people.
