A Twist of the Knife is Peter James' gripping first full-length collection of 30 short stories. With each twist of the knife, a chilling new journey begins . . . From a woman intent on bizarre revenge, to a restaurant critic with a morbid fear of the number 13; and from a man arranging a life-changing assignation, to a couple heading for a disaster-filled vacation . . . In multi-million-copy bestselling author Peter James' collection of short stories we first come to meet Brighton's finest detective, Roy Grace, and read the tale that went on to inspire James' hugely successful novel, Dead Simple. James exposes the Achilles heel of each of his characters, and makes us question how well we can trust ourselves, and one another. Each tale carries a twist that will haunt readers for days after they turn the final page . . . Combining every twisted tale from the ebook bestsellers Short Shockers One and Short Shockers Two, with a never-seen-before collection of new material, A Twist of the Knife shows Peter James as the undisputed grand master of storytellers with this sometimes funny, often haunting, but always shocking collection.

A very good twist By elaineb A different readThe stories are all different some ghost some romantic some sad and two Roy grace stories. The ghost stories are very frightening and are based on true eventsThe story of the dead simple was the basis of the first in the Roy grace series and had a different ending that didn't impress me.The majority of the stories were good but the story about the sailor and the story about the online dating were to be honest well below parr and intensely disliked them.A good change

It turns out the sample was really the best part of the book. I didn't need to read parts of stories I had read before. I stopped reading about 3/4 way through the book and have just recently finished it but it didn't get any better. Sorry I wasted my money on this book. I have just bought the latest Roy Grace book and just hope it will be better. Love Peter James but this book was disappointing.

Entertaining collection By Kay Smillie Got to be honest and admit that I was expecting all the stories to be crime tales but loved the ghost stories that are part of this collection. First got into Peter James after my older brother gave me a loan of Dead Simple and the original short story that was expanded into the novel is here. If you love the Roy Grace novels then give this collection a go. You will be (un)pleasantly surprised.Ray Smillie

Magic Happens at Christmas Three modern women are sent back in Time to ensure their futures are bright. Cynical after her louse of an (ex)boyfriend took the money she thought she was donating to a just cause, Maggie Maguire doesn't trust herself to make good decisions. Even when she dreams of nineteenth century Ireland's struggle for independence, she resists believing in it, but then Finn O'Byrne, Prince of the Fae, gives her a wee nudge. Finn is used to assisting mortals on their way. He's done it for centuries, but he's never allowed human emotion to penetrate the icy crystal barrier he's erected around himself... that is, until a blue-eyed, brunette beauty enters his world and melts his heart. Elizabeth Shelton is a high-powered stockbroker who has little sympathy for those who don't break through the glass ceiling. When her dream transports her to Victorian England and a duke's castle, she naturally thinks she's a guest. Instead, she finds she's a serving wench. She tries to convince the duke of her proper status, but he has more lecherous thoughts in mind. Broc Hadon, the evil warlock duke's good twin, has lots of practice in rescuing damsels from his brother's clutches. He's lost track of the number over time. As Elizabeth slowly starts to understand the plight of servants and her humbling station in this life, Broc realizes he has a void in his own life to fill...with Elizabeth. After her husband's untimely death in Afghanistan, Caroline Campbell withdraws from society, preferring to keep her nose stuck in history books, where the outcomes of events are certain. When her dream sends her to Inverness, Scotland, shortly before the Battle of Culloden in 1746, she wonders if she might be able to change history and prevent the loss of nearly two thousand Scottish lives. Shape-shifter Gavin MacLean knows any Campbell is in enemy territory this far north. Between his own clan and the MacDonald's, Caroline will not be safe if they discover who she is. What Gavin doesn't realize as he decides to protect her is that he isn't safe either...from falling in love with her.

She's an awesome, wonderful, loving sister. She is also my spiritual mother who led me to the Lord when I was ten years old.My beautiful niece is the model on the cover and one of my other incredibly talented nieces was the photographer. And finally, a dear friend of mine was the editor. If you love Christian romance, you will love this story of heartache turned into redemptive love!

First published in 1936, One Thousand Ways to Make $1000 is the long out-of-print book that Warren Buffett's biographers credit with shaping the legendary investor's business acumen and giving him his trademark appreciation of compound interest. After pulling a copy of One Thousand Ways off a library shelf at age eleven and devouring F.C. Minaker's plucky and practical business advice, Buffett declared that he would be a millionaire by the time he was 35. Written in the immediate, conversational style of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, this book is full of inventive ideas on how to make money through excellent salesmanship, hard work, and resourcefulness. While some of the ideas may seem quaint today-goat dairying, manufacturing motor-driven chairs, and renting out billiard tables to local establishments are among the money-making ideas presented- the underlying fundamentals of business explained in these pages remain as solid as they were over seventy years ago. Covering a wide spectrum of topics including investing, marketing, merchandising, sales, customer relations, and raising money for charity, One Thousand Ways to Make $1000 is both a durable, classic business book and a fascinating portrait of determined entrepreneurship in Depression-era America. Every effort has been made to reproduce the content exactly as it was originally presented.

24 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Great insight on bygone era By Billy-Bob Garcia I got this book after I read about it in a Vanity Fair profile of Warren Buffet. It details how many people made a thousand dollars in the 1920s and 30's (about 40-50ks in today's purchasing power). Back then, you could do things like buy a potato chip making machine, bag them in your basement, and sell them to restaurants.Today, of course, you are expected to file for an LLC (perhaps with a DBA), apply for food handling permits, get WC insurance, get tax ID numbers for federal and state taxes, get a liability bond, withold taxes for any employees, etcetera, all before you can sell your first potato chip. Madness! This is why we were a powerhouse then, and why we are doomed now.

It should be titled One Thousand Ways To Make Some Extra Cash... Don't buy this thinking your going to read it, do one of the options, and immediately make one thousand dollars!

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Obvious ideas By iiaggo The genius comes when you mix these simple ideas with today's technology.Chinese manufacture, Google Adwords, and a landing page will definitely get you $10000 instead of $1000. I figure inflation calculated from the time this book was written until now would equal out to 10k.

Set in Wyoming and India, the stories in Cowboys and East Indians explore the immigrant experience and collisions of cultures in the American West as seen through the eyes of outsiders. From Indian motel owners to a kleptomaniac foreign exchange student, a cross-dressing sari-wearing cowboy to oil-rig workers, an adopted cowgirl to a medical tourist in India – the characters in these stories are lonely and are looking for connection, and yet they can also be problematic and aggressive in order to survive in an isolated landscape. These stories focus on the not-often-mentioned rural immigrant experience. For these characters, identity is shaped not just by personal history but by place, the very land they live on. • About the Author: Nina McConigley is the author of the story collection Cowboys and East Indians, which won the 2014 PEN Open Book Award and a High Plains Book Award. Three Cheers for Nina McConigley By Bonnie Darling I dont always gravitate towards short stories, but after reading this book, I have changed my mind. The writing of each and every story is incredible. We chose this for our book club selection and every single member raved about it. That never happens! We each had a different favorite story, favorite character, favorite theme. Each story could be a novel of its own. We hope to read a lot more from this talented author, who explores what it means to belong or not to belong. The quest to find the place where you feel you belong and then finding it isnt where you thought!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WONDERFUL READ!!!! By Lindsay O'Donovan I really loved reading this book- and to be very honest short stories I often find difficult to get into- however Nina has a way of pulling you into her characters immediately. I also particularly loved the way ( as a lifelong East Coast resident) she captures the feeling of Wyoming, and makes me feel like it is very present. A wonderful book!!!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Like several of the other commenters By Wyoming Buffalo Gal Like several of the other commenters, I am not one who gravitates to short stories, but this collection read almost like a memoir of place. I particularly connected with the stories set in Wyoming, since it is my home and I appreciated the obvious attachment to our landscape and wildlife, but the stories set elsewhere were so full of description, it was like reading a travel blog. In addition, Nina's characters add another perspective and layer of diversity to both the Equality State and broader human experience. This award winning book is well worth reading, regardless of genre preference or personal perspective. The writing will lead you into a place that is at once familiar and new.
