Having listened to it as an audiobook, I may not have gotten as much out of it as I would have by reading the written words on the pages of the collection of vignettes. This isn't to say that the audiobook wasn't intriguing; it's just that this was my first foray into listening to an audiobook, and I found that it wasn't quite as much my cup of tea as reading it myself. To each their own, however. I'm sure that audiobook lovers will find the recorded version just as enjoyable as I find the words on the page. The stories brought out my love of symbolism. Whether Manber Kupfer meant for symbolism to be injected or not, I cannot say, but it struck me after finishing the collection that the question of whether there will be watermelons on Mars is akin to the idea of impossibilities and pondering whether or not they have the likelihood of coming true. No one would have ever thought that watermelons could be present on Mars, or that travel to Mars would one day come to fruition. Yet, in Manber Kupfer's stories, these ideas are given credence. As someone who has followed the unrest in the Middle East with quite a bit of worry over what may come to pass if people continue to resist just getting along and finding ways to make peace, I found the last couple vignettes, especially, to be much more intriguing than the first couple. The idea of a Jewish man and an Arab woman falling in love and finding resistance to their relationship on all sides rang all too true, as even though this isn't heard about much, it certainly must occur sometimes, even if not often. Despite the anger stemming from both sides of their relationship, they want to find a way to move forward with their love, and the way they want to do that is to move to Mars since the end of the world is supposedly near. Despite their living in Jerusalem, as all the characters throughout the vignettes do, they don't even know if they are safe there from this potentially inevitable end, in the only place where anyone thinks God may save them, since it is the Holy Land, after all. Uncertain whether life still exists outside of Jerusalem, they find solace in the idea of moving to Mars, which is where the symbolism lies. They never thought they would be able to live a life of peace and happiness, free of the burden of people's stares and judgment, but they find that it may just be possible with this attempt at a new life.Debbie Manber Kupfer has woven a tale that rings true in this day and age of uncertainty and hope for possibility. I recommend checking it out.Beth Rodgers, Author of 'Freshman Fourteen,' a Young Adult Novel

They were absolutely sure this time. As a result, everyone simply stopped...stopped making things, stopped working, stopped caring.Weren't they surprised at how "the end" turned out. All but the watermelons...This short book is a cross between sci-fi and "The Twilight Zone". It has just enough twists in it--throughout all three stories--that the reader never really knows what is in store. Just when it starts sounding like the world is being set to rights, something else starts up.Relationships are given emphasis here, and the author does a great job showing the absurdity of ill will in the face of disaster. The protagonists simply want to get along in what seems to be the last of days, but there are those who still hold onto their prejudices. A little thinking reveals the absurdity of the latter way of thinking.Life goes on, be it on Earth or on Mars. But do the watermelons make it? You'll have to read for yourselves.

Three tales of hope By Skunkmelon This was an enjoyable, quick read about what happens the day after the world's supposed to end ... and it doesn't.Everyone flocked to Jerusalem hoping to be saved and the main character of the story mourns the way things were. The look into one specific neighborhood in Jerusalem was fascinating, and the idea of what would happen the day after the end of the world is looked at from a very street-view perspective, so to speak. This isn't grand heroics, only people doing what they do best--surviving.There are three stories in this little tome and all of them tell tales of hope.Well done!

Review 'Nathaniel wrote with exquisite beauty and feeling of the place... wonderfully nasty tale' Simon Schama

From the Publisher Hesperus Press, as suggested by their Latin motto, Et remotissima prope, is dedicated to bringing near what is far—far both in space and time. Works by illustrious authors, often unjustly neglected or simply little known in the English–speaking world, are made accessible through a completely fresh editorial approach and new translations. Through these short classic works, which feature forewords by leading contemporary authors, the modern reader will be introduced to the greatest writers of Europe and America. An elegantly designed series of genuine rediscoveries.

About the Author Novelist, essayist and moralist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) is one of America's greatest writers, most famous for his remarkable novel The Scarlet Letter. Historian and best-selling author Simon Schama is the writer and presenter of BBC TV's hugely popular 'The History of Britain' series.

Must Read Classics (In the Descriptive and Prescriptive Sense) By David Milliern This little compilation of three short stories ("Rappaccini's Daughter," Young Goodman Brown," and "A Select Party") has been put together to "exemplify Hawthorne's key thematic concerns." As far as possible assortments of Hawthorne's stories go, I think that goal has been satisfactorily realized; and it is difficult to see what selections could be more efficacious. However, it should be noted by potential buyers that the contents of this edition, published by Hesperus, is entirely contained in "Mosses from the Old Manse." The one particular reason I might advocate this particular edition is for Simon Schama's artistically written foreword, which is very enjoyable. While I don't like to discuss contents of books I review, so that I don't spoil them, I will say that Hawthorne's work (and the themes, herein, contained) presents many elements of truly classic literature, in particular, staid concerns of thought that typify the human condition. Hawthorne's probing of human nature, human origin, and the natural (and supernatural) world is really something that cannot be missed. Coming from a philosophy and science background, I found the concerns of "Rappaccini's Daughter" to be as relevant today as they were in Hawthorne's on time (and mind). When this kind of content meets the expressive capacities of the literary ability possessed by Hawthorne, something truly great happens, and I cannot put into words what this is; one can only experience it. With magnificent prose, complex sentences sufficient for conveying complex ideas, and a perspective of substantial pith, I can wholeheartedly recommend this collection to everyone.

Lin The short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne reeks with the theme of the ability to accept what is good and bad in humanity. The story pretty much alludes to the biblical story, with Giovanni and Beatrice starring as Adam and Eve respectively. The two scientists pretty much juxtapose each other, while Baglioni views things superficially only being able to see, Beatrice for what she is made of rather than what her character is like Rappaccini is much in tune with nature, not realizing the plights of what he made her to be out of, but what she is to him, perfection. Perfection cannot exist in the world. Because after that there is no meaning, nothing can be done after that because there is nothing higher. Both young and beautiful, Giovanni and Beatrice meet in the gardens, alluding to the garden of Eden. The catch is that in this garden, the plants are toxic, with the ability to kill anyone who touches them. Only Beatrice can hold them because she is made out of them. However, Giovanni does not see this until towards the end. His views on her entirely change from being an angel to corrupt. He is not able to compromise between the two, and cannot see past her flaws although she has good intentions. This brings Beatrice into despair and she impulsively takes an antidote that would cure her of her evil. However, relating back to the theme of the inability to compromise, because she was too much intertwined with the poison as her life force, the antidote, the common representation of good, kills her.Much of Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing is littered with ambiguity, as implied in his use of setting. There are three main colors prevalent throughout the story, which are yellow, purple, and black, each of them representing the different levels of good to evil. Yellow, the color of the sun, represents the mirage of the unspoiled nature of the garden, it gives the shrubbery a peaceful nature, connoting innocence. With the color of purple, as seen in Beatrice's flower and attire, is ambiguous. It alludes to the Advent, the hiatus of when Christ was born to cleanse the world of its sins. It could represent Hawthorne's message of the endless wait for our quest to perfection, so the best possible course is to accept and deal with imperfections. Lastly, the color of black, of darkness, and of evil, and if yellow is the positive overtone then black is the negative one foiling the yellow.I found this story to be marked up entirely with ambiguity, from the dialogue to the settings. This "open to interpretation feeling" left me quite dissatisfied and frustrated. However, this could also be related to Hawthorne's message of having to deal with our frustration and learn to live with it.This story should definitely be read as it provides an insightful view on mankind and its fallacies.

Hawthorne's masterful literary art: social relevance, psychological insight, irony, sarcasm, allegoric and symbolic power. In `Rappaccini's Daughter', a beautiful garden (`Was this garden the Eden of the present world?') contains only poisonous flowers. Its gardener is a physician whose experiments serve only his diabolic and morbid goal of total control over his daughter. In `Young Goodman Brown', a young man undergoes the hallucination of a black mass `by a score of the church members of Salem village'. Its aim is `to penetrate the deep mystery of sin.' He will be marked for the rest of his life.`A Select Party' is held in a castle in the air. Those invited are `fantastic masquers, rendering heroism and nature alike ridiculous': the representative of Posterity (`I expect to owe you nothing, unless it be certain national debt'), Master Genius, Man of Fancy, but also `such rarities in the world as an incorruptible Patriot, a Priest without worldly ambitions, a Poet who felt no jealousy or a Reformer untrammeled by his theory.'Vanitas vanitatum revisited. These literary gems should not be missed.

World War II has ended but British colonial traditions are silently at war with an Australian whose identity is maturing relentlessly. This network of tales is told by a near-sighted child, half-British, half-European, certain she can make peace in her family and within the culture. Neither her culture nor her family is ready for peace. This haunting novel spans wars, continents, and the Great Depression. It spins a strange future from old loves, loyalties, and secrets. A free-spirited bride shapes herself into convention. A grandparent's death reaches across time and continents. An officer faces civilian life. A mother betrays her daughter. Reality is more dangerous than imagination; religion, than sex. Reserve shrouds fact and prejudice. A sweater, glasses, letter, shard: each changes the course of a life. A girls' school breeds strictures, loves, betrayals. A religious meeting forces impossible choices. A mother's secret, long held, ordains a daughter's life. A grasshopper, moth, puppy: each can end a childhood and unfold truths and passions, rarely simple. Throughout, the great heart of Australia beats in each life and decision. And a young girl's widening world reminds us that we each grow because of-and in spite of-family and culture. Like Australia, we are destined to wound and be wounded, to heal, to become ourselves.

I found some stories most interesting such as “Phar Lap’s Heart”. I am a horse nut and Phar Lap was one of the most magnificent race horses that ever lived. The other story that caught my imagination was “Otter” particularly the section about facing the librarian and telling her there are pages missing in the book. I am sure most readers will relate to that part of the story. The book is well written and the stories are interesting and quite enjoyable. I find I read short stories and books of Poetry differently from other books. I pick up the book and read just one short story while I am waiting for something such as the computer, on hold on the phone etc. or taking a quick break between chores. I always have a poetry book or short story book around the house and in the car waiting for me to pick it up.I am sure you will find many of the stores in the book enjoyable. This is the first book I have read by Zoe Mason King. I will certainly look for more books by this author. The book is 447 pages long and was published in 2015.

The setting is Australia and its period is the recent past, both vividly evoked in prose that is literate and literary. Its endearing narrator is Meg, a young girl growing into young woman whose perceptive and sensitive memoir recalls quirky family members, beloved dogs and engagement in daily life that bring to mind Jane Austin or Virginia Woolf. It's the small occurrences that form the person and round out the life. What sets it apart from much of modern "chick-lit" memoir is its sympathetic tone. It doesn't judge; it tells with warmth and understanding. Zoe Mason King masterfully recreates the fascinating coming of age story of a young woman that is timelessly familiar to fans of memoir, whether fictional or not.

Short stories surrounding same characters By Stephanie Ostlund I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is a well thought out book which focuses on the young life of the narrator, Meg, living in Australia. However, while the book is well thought out, I got the impression that some of the story was rearranged, leaving the important explanations later in the book which would have been helpful earlier in the story. This story doesn’t necessarily take a chronologically logical path, but it does engage the reader into a life that is glamorous (Nan and her mother) and normal (her paternal grandparents and father). There are contradictions within the story which are contradictions many of us face in our lifetime, especially when we are faced with the dueling relationships of our birth family and our in-laws. The narrator and her mother try to navigate this fine line, losing the battle most of the time. I did find myself laughing a few times at Meg while she was learning the finer qualities of the English language- much like an English language learner might. There are the strange words that do not necessarily make sense until they are explained by her grammatically correct mother. These idiocrasies are ones that are funny, but easily misunderstood. These grammar lessons serve as just one example of Meg’s mother’s need to constantly be in control of what she thinks are the most important aspects of a young person’s life. Having been raised more aristocratic than her husband, Meg’s mother doesn’t know how to balance her old life with her mother and her new life with her husband. She is constantly making errors and shows a great deal of passive aggressive behaviors. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about other cultures, but also anyone who likes little stories. This book can be divided into short stories or read as a whole. The little snippets can be understood without reading it in order. Overall, this novel was a wonderful read.

Even happy days come to an end. In this remarkable collection, Cressida Connolly explores the lives of children and young people who find themselves split in two. A conversation on a trip to the zoo heralds the end of a family; a boy watches his father fold Aunt Rose into his arms and loses his vocation; a young girl grows jealous of the attention paid to her dying sister.Examining familiar emotions--love, loss, jealousy, loneliness--with a fresh eye, The Happiest Days is an exciting, original, startling debut.

The Happiest Days, by Cressida Connolly

From Publishers Weekly The pitfalls of narrating fiction from a child's perspective are notoriousDit is nearly impossible to avoid succumbing to sentimentality or knowingnessDbut Connolly nimbly channels children's real voices in her affecting debut collection of nine short stories. A young boy's loss of na ve religious faith is ably captured in "How I Lost My Vocation," as is a young girl's fragile play life with her terminally ill sister in "Granville Hill." In one of the stories told from the alternating perspectives of two charactersDa Connolly trademarkDa juvenile car thief living in a foster home clashes with the family's preteen daughter ("Paradise Drive"). Although the best of Connolly's tales involve a child or adolescent, some feature adults on their own, though conventional issues like midlife crises and divorce aren't quite as freshly treated as childhood experiences. In "Canada," a young mother's trip to the zoo with her husband and children inspires her to imagine how she might escape domestic responsibilities. More exotically, "The Bounce" deals with a lady lion tamer's balancing act between her circus life and an affair with a married Irish gentleman farmer. Praised by Kazuo Ishiguro and Helen Dunmore upon their publication in Britain, these affectionate, gracefully styled stories herald the arrival on the literary scene of a talented writer in perfect command of her distinctive prose. Review “[Connolly] makes sad, wise sense of the inner lives of children in the process of being robbed of their illusions about the world...Connolly catches them brilliantly...she takes the transition seriously, proving herself to be a breed apart from the garden-variety grown-up.”—Newsday“These affectionate, gracefully styled stories herald the arrival...of a talented writer in perfect command of her distinctive prose.”—Publishers Weekly“A touching debut"—US Weekly

It shows two smiling girls, both wearing knitted sweaters. It makes me think that this photo comes from a knitting magazine or pattern book. The photo sets the theme for this collection of short stories, all of which feature children and/or adolescents. I am not sure the title of this books truly reflects what happens in these stories.* How I lost my VocationFrancis is a devout Catholic and a very observant boy, and he notices that his parents are not very happy. During summer at the beach house, with Catholic Granny sick and Aunt Rose coming to visit, Francis manages to lose his vocation. The second part to this story is the very last one, "Indian Summer", where an older Francis narrates the aftermath of his parent's divorce and shows his loyalties in a very mature way.* CanadaRather clichéy story about a mother feeling smothered by her family life. Her escape is to dream about Canada, so vast and with so many square miles between people.* The Pleasure GardensAgain a story that I found slightly clichéy. The main topic in the story is the coming-of-age of the narrator, who is 13. She does that both in a gentle way, by falling in love with a boy at the same time her father is contemplating a move to another city, and brutally, by being the unwilling witness to sexual abuse in the house of her best friend.* GreengagesStory told dually by mother and daughter. This was my favorite, because it shows the unfortunate rifts that grow between people that should love each other so much, yet they are so encumbered by those rifts and don't grasp the opportunities that come to knock them down.*Granville HillA girl talks about her sister, who died from leukemia. She struggled from her feelings of jealousy at all the attention her sick sister was getting, to the feeling of guilt after her death.* Paradise DriveAnother story with two narrators, Jon and Alison. Foster parents take in a juvenile delinquent who loves stealing hot cars (Jon). The problem is the parent's 16-year old daughter (Alison) gets jealous. Not a happy ending.*BareOK, maybe my favorite story after all. Dad brings girlfriend to meet daughter and ex-wife (Bea). Bea wants to be extra nice for the sake of the girl, but girlfriend is a real bitcharoonie on the sly. Bea is so perceptive that she picks up all the clues. I liked that writing. Bea feels depressed and unfulfilled, and gets a life-cleansing tattoo. I liked the honesty that Bea has with herself.* The BounceHistorical piece! A woman lion-tamer spends some time in Ireland and gets involved with a farmer, and life gets very complicated for all involved. The narrators are the husband and wife, many, many years later.

All of the stories were interesting and thought-provoking. I was hoping that she had other books available...I will be waiting patiently for more!

Looney When I came across this slim volume of stories at the library, I didn't read the jacket info closely enough to realize that this was Cressida Connolly's debut. The stories here are impressively well-written and warmly emotional, without being sappy in the least -- they could easily be the work of a seasoned writer. The photo on the book's cover of the two young girls is an appropriate one -- nearly all of the stories center around children or young adults. The two stories that revolve around adults, 'Bare' and 'The bounce', involve children to a lesser degree, but they are there. Connolly has a sharp eye (or is it a memory in some cases...?) and keen observational/descriptive talents. She chooses her words carefully and to great effect. One particular talent she possesses is her ability to tell some of the stories from varying points of view, without allowing the shifts in perspective to become confusing to the reader. This technique is not over-applied, and it adds multiple dimensions to several of the works here.Besides the childhood/young adult perspective that most of these stories share, I found another common thread. In each one, a secret of some sort plays a part in the events -- and a secret is a powerful thing. In some cases, the secret is held by a single character -- in others, it is a secret shared between two characters, or revealed. It always has its consequences -- the power gained, or the events set in motion are not in every case planned or calculated, but they are there nonetheless.Connolly is a very talented writer -- I look forward to reading more by her in the future.

Adventure and heroism in England, Europe, and the Middle East under King Richard By Chatelaine This is exactly the same book as "Winning His Spurs." It was retitled for this new publication. When this adventure begins, Cuthbert is a boy of fifteen living at home with his mother in Norman England. He hears information and is able to warn the outlaws living in the forest, among whom he has relatives, of an impending attack by the Earl of Evesham, who resents their killing his deer without permission. The forest men are reconciled to the Earl, however, when Cuthbert summons their help to rescue the Earl's daughter from a kidnapping by a nearby vindictive Norman nobleman. After Cuthbert participates in the victorious siege of the latter's castle, the Earl of Evesham, who is himself a distant relative of Cuthbert, promises to take him with him when he next rides off to battle.Neither had any idea that they would be going off to battle so soon. King Richard the Lionhearted was gathering troops to set off on another crusade, and Cuthbert gets to go along, and be a party to major historic events. He witnesses the French and British rivalry, rescues a princess, wins a duel, fights the Moorish pirates, is knighted for saving King Richard's life in a battle, escapes Saracen captivity, visits with a Dead Sea hermit, and returns to Europe with King Richard. When the Earl of Evesham was mortally wounded, he begged the king that his estates, title and daughter would be granted to Cuthbert. After Cuthbert and his faithful men make their dangerous journey across the snowy Alps and hostile European cities with many narrow escapes, they find themselves rather unwelcome in England. There he leads a Robin Hood style life, and with Robin Hood, no less! They finally see that Cuthbert's mother and fiancée are in safety, and Cuthbert goes with Blondel to discover the place of King Richard's imprisonment, and arrange for his ransom. This is one of the more exciting Henty adventures, and any lover of Robin Hood will certainly enjoy this tale. Cuthbert's presence of mind and common sense, his loyalty, honesty, valor, and quick wits are all characteristics that make us and his authorities in the book admire and respect him. If it were a movie, you would find yourself holding your breath, but by the time you're halfway through the book, you will be confident that Cuthbert can extricate himself and his friends with honor and distinction from any kind of sticky situation. Find a comfortable seat and enjoy!

Henty' s better works, and his use of primeval English is flawless, if not highly gratifying for those with wide vocabularies. The story takes place during the Third Crusade under King Richard I. It is very much historically accurate with one or two inconsequential exceptions for romantic purposes (e.g. SPOILER: the troubadour Blondel did NOT discover King Richard's prison). The day to day events of the story however were obviously well researched. It is very much pro- King Richard and somewhat neutral on the subject of the Crusades themselves. However it was written for young people so it's no small wonder the saucy bits were left out. All in all, a nice, light way of gaining some heavy historical insight and knowledge.Enjoy.In response to a certain CA State Reading Specialist:I'm sure you'll never read this but--G.A. Henty' s main publisher was the same one who published many of Jules Verne' s novels, amongst others. So hardly self- published. As for Henty' s "attempt" at writing "old English" please look up when the book in question was published...And to anyone interested who wants to become a CA State Reading Specialist, the application is online.Cheers~
