4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Bring on more Beacon! By kathy I am really enjoying these twin packs of short stories. First I read Walk Up Nameless Ridge. I don't think it was the most interesting story but the author notes following the story helped me to understand it better. Another reviewer said it perfectly when he wrote that Hugh Howey really understands the human condition. In Nameless Ridge there is a character wanting something for fame and recognition and another character that is climbing the same mountain but life is more important than fame. Cleaver if not a little confusing. Beacon 23 is a gem. The possibilities for story lines are endless. I can't wait to see what happens with other Beacon keepers in upcoming installments. The story in Beacon 23 is a new way of looking at something old and at the same time very refreshing. We may not see our unnamed hero again but he did his job very well. Bravo and bring on more Beacon! I highly recommend the print editions for the author notes. I love short stories and often times you need to put some brain power into getting the full meaning. Sometimes the meaning is different for different readers. I like getting the meaning the author was thinking of while writing.

Scottish author George MacDonald Fraser was famed for his legendary Flashman series, featuring the incorrigible knave Harry Flashman, a soldier in the imperial British army. In the colorful standalone Captain in Calico, the first novel he ever wrote but which has never been published, Fraser introduces another real-life anti-hero: Captain John Rackham, called Calico Jack, an illustrious eighteenth-century pirate who marauded the Caribbean seas. On a tranquil evening in the Bahamas, Calico Jack, long wanted on counts of piracy, makes a surprise appearance at the Governors residence and asks for a pardon for himself and his men. A deal is brokered after Jack reveals the motive for turning himself in: love. When Jack last set sail from the Bahamas two years ago, he left behind a beautiful fiance acute, and he recently learned that she remains unmarried. What the governor does not reveal to Jack is that while he was off pirating, his beloved has become betrothed to a new man the governor himself. It doesn't take long for this truth to come to light, and after embarking on a new romance with famous Irish pirate Anne Bonney, Jack is quickly transformed back into a thieving captain in calico.

Review Praise for Captain in Calico:“A forgotten novel, written 60 years ago and found locked away in a fireproof safe in [Fraser’s] old study, is finally to make it into print . . . Full of the influences of the writers he loved as a boy—Rafael Sabatini, PC Wren, GA Henty, Sir Walter Scott.”—Guardian (UK)“Fraser [is] the world’s greatest storyteller, combining the best of P.G. Wodehouse, Alexandre Dumas and Great Game chronicler Peter Hopkirk . . . Captain incorporates piracy’s tried-and-true hallmarks—treasure, treachery, intermittent romance and high-seas mutiny.”—Wall Street Journal“Capt. Jack Rackham arrives on the page fearless and fully formed . . . An entertaining story laced with historical references.”—Kirkus Reviews“[An] energetic tale of piracy and peril . . . suspenseful.”—Publishers WeeklyPraise for George MacDonald Fraser:"One of the masterly comic writers of the 20th century."—Wall Street Journal"A novelistic gallop through history and imagination. . . . Fraser can easily juggle Conan Doyle and Holmes, Fleming and Bond, Wodehouse and Wooster, and Chandler and Marlowe."—Vanity Fair"A master of high jinks, an unabashedly nostalgic fan of dueling adventure and boudoir romance, a knowledgeable, witty and ebullient ransacker of historical fiction."—New York Times Book Review, on The Pyrates

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Master's early attempt at a swashbuckler By Keith Thompson I am a huge fan of Mr. Fraser’s “Flashman” novels. (Full disclosure: I corresponded with Mr. Fraser before he died; once wrote a “Flashman” screenplay; and later wrote a novel about a real-life American Flashman very much in the master’s style.Scoundrel!: The Secret Memoirs of General James Wilkinson) So I really wanted to give “Captain in Calico” five stars. Unfortunately, I cannot. This was Mr. Fraser’s first attempt at a novel, and there’s a reason why it couldn’t find a publisher back in the 1960s. It’s not that it’s poorly written or that the story isn’t interesting—it’s simply too … conventional. The storyline and plot devices have all been done a hundred times before. It would have been a decent basis for an Errol Flynn swashbuckler in the 1930s, now it’s trite. This is not to say it’s a “bad” novel, or that I didn’t like it. But I often found myself reading it analytically—studying the sentence structure and scene transitions for insights into Mr. Fraser’s evolution as a writer—rather than being immersed in the story. When Mr. Fraser was a boy, his favorite author was Rafael Sabatini (“Captain Blood”, “The Sea Hawk”). “Calico” was his attempt to emulate his idol’s pirate novels, and as such, is not an unworthy effort. But Sabatini’s novels are now nearly a century old, and movies and television have done the plots to death. Nonetheless, I still enjoy re-reading Sabatini from time to time, and “Calico” is entertaining in the same sort of way. Just don’t expect the originality or brilliance of “Flashman”.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Before Flashy, there was Calico Jack. By Scott Blake Being a huge fan of the Flashman series, I read this book knowing that it was unlikely to be anywhere as near as good as any of the Flashman books. That proved for me to be the case here. The writing is ok, the story is reasonably interesting, and Fraser did a good job of presenting the main characters. As Fraser's children wrote in the foreword, this book was rejected by several publishers with good reason. Fraser admitted that the rejections were deserved. It's obvious that the superb character of Flashman came to be in part because of Fraser's characterization of Rackham in this book.Flashman fans won't find this book to be of the same high quality as most of the Flashman books. Those readers should find this book worth reading as part of the groundwork for the Flashman series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fraser's Training Wheel Novel By Ralph White Fraser's children note in the introduction that this isn't their father's best work but that they decided to publish it because he hadn't erased it. More likely they realized that even Fraser's training wheel novel would sell thousands of copies and generate incremental royalty income. Captain in Calico shouldn't qualify as a Fraser novel. He apparently wrote it in his youth before he perfected his technique and it shows. The characters are less vivid; the plot is more linear, and the story uninspiring. But this substandard Fraser novel still makes a quick, fun read. Die hard Fraser fans will have to have it but others might skip it in favor of his very good pirate novel, The Pyrates, which is the work of a professional.

This book challenges pastors to step down from their exalted position and return to the New Testament form of local church leadership by a council of elders—men whose character, not their gifts or degrees, qualify them to lead God’s family on earth.

It takes a tortured twisting of the words of Jesus and his disciples to defend the professional positions of today’s clergy.

The division between the clergy and the laity violates the teachings of Jesus and the practice of the apostles. Jesus did not appoint one of his disciples over the others. After his resurrection, none claimed such a role. Neither Jesus nor his disciples was a member of the religious hierarchy or a trained scholar. Yet he entrusted to them the mission of carrying the good news to the whole world.

America needs a family, yet our churches look like any other corporate organization or political government.

In The Pastors' Club, author Paul S. Lyon provides an analysis of the teachings of Jesus and his disciples demonstrating that only elders are called to collectively pastor and oversee the local church. A single local leader—pastor, bishop, priest, or even chief elder—has no basis in scripture.

The Pastors' Club, by Paul S Lyon

About the Author

Paul S. Lyon became a Christian in 1971 just prior to his senior year in high school. Lyon along with his brother and other musicians formed the band Liberation Suite—one of America's first Christian rock bands. They toured the western United States before moving to Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1974 during the “Troubles.” After moving to London they recorded their first album. They played throughout Europe and Scandinavia, including London's Royal Albert Hall, before returning to Texas in 1976.

After graduating with a degree in accounting, Lyon became a CPA and worked for the state of Texas and various local governments as an auditor, administrator, and financial consultant. He also served as a worship leader and elder in a local charismatic church. After retiring, he formed his own consulting firm.

He and his wife, Daryl, married in 1983 and have four children. They now attend a denominational pastor-led church.

Paul’s book was like walking down memory lane for me. He hits the proverbial nail right on the head in many ways.I have seen more people with God given spiritual gifts overlooked in churches simply because they didn’t seem to fit into a particular Pastor’s scheme or vision of things. Try disagreeing with that vision and watch out!Paul correctly points out that the New Testament never designed the church to function in this way, but it does in our present day, and I’m not sure we’ll ever change it. We belonged to one church that tried to dissolve the Pastor system and go to Elder run, however, pride and a power struggle amongst the Elders resulted in returning to hiring a Pastor and the church eventually closing.Top down rule is the result of servanthood being changed to a career. When a man has to rely on his career to support his family he will do almost anything to protect it. This results in surrounding him or herself with loyal counterparts who will protect him or her.I’ve known great men and women of God shut out from exercising their gifts for years because of this and one of the most blatantly misused things in the church is nepotism. This is a book that should be read by everyone.

Morse Most churches in America are run in an autocratic style that produces the sad results of disunity, mediocrity, waste and exhaustion. Paul Lyon offers a protest and a remedy which is beautifully grounded in the Bible. His arguments for sound church leadership are well-reasoned and passionate. This book has a gritty perspective on the hardships of dissent. It's partly a memoir; I skimmed the book a second time to dog-ear the autobiographical sections. If you have spent a long time trying to enact change where resistance is high, you will find a companion here.No one can accrue these wrenching anecdotes without long-term, unfaltering faithfulness. The author's respect and care for each party, including adversaries, is exemplary. I hope the church leaders who were served with such devotion will repay the author by reading his opinion. The "Just The FAQs" chapter has ideas for implementation which are refreshingly practical. I wish it were longer, and also for better organization of the content generally, but this book is not a how-to guide.

By Steve8685 It was a real pleasure to read this book and realize that this author had hit the proverbial "nail on the squarely on the head". I have read several books over the years dealing with church leadership and the responsibilities of that leadership and most promoted and parroted the commonly accepted view of the pastor-led church. "The Pastors' Club", however, sheds a discerning light on what I believe to be the New Testament's description of church hierarchy. While I am not in complete agreement with the book in it's entirety, this book dares to challenge modern day Christianity with a thoughtful and thorough presentation of what the New Testament actually teaches about church hierarchy and leadership. Prepare to be challenged and, perhaps, angered. This is a wonderful read that is sure to stimulate discussion.

I can't compare it with previous books of Alex, but going diagonally through the content on my Kindle I get the impression in advance that this book combines a load motivational advice & insiders knowledge with very practical information (in the chapter Useful Resources). It will be a challenge to read it all and try out for myself in order to gain the reassurance that it is really worthwhile work hard and extend my own audience. In addition to the impressive content of the book itself ( > 1200 horizontal pages on my Kindle version) the guide will lead you to other books and tutorials/website etc (although I didn't manage to receive the free short guide '9 Things Freelancers ...' due to an 'Application order'). This book looks like a basic big step on the way to becoming an Indispensable Illustrator.

Alex does an efficient job of organizing and getting one on one of those roads. You will find yourself reading it several times to get every nuance of it.
