This beautiful prose collection strikes very deep notes Rachel Hadas, known for her formal dexterity and intelligence, demonstrates here a remarkable fluency in moving from the disarmingly personal to the perceptively literary-critical, from the daily round to the ancient world, and from heartbreak to wonderment. Poetry is alive in her, as is a calm, humane attentiveness to the normalcy of grief and the possibilities of consolation. Phillip Lopate

As I read Talking to the Dead, I felt I was engaged in a wide-ranging, personal, pleasurable, and erudite conversation with Rachel Hadas herself. She is deft, as few others are, at integrating her deep scholarship with a compassionate understanding of the human and the humorous everyday, and as she turns her sharp eye, clear intelligence, and ready wit on subjects as various as Dante and dreams, Homer and Plath, snakes and centaurs, illness and invisibility, she never fails to surprise, stimulate, and satisfy both heart and mind. Lydia Davis

A journey with a wise and wonderful teacher/companion By Natania Rosenfed This book made me feel that to read is to be fully alive, and reminded me how much consolation and sheer energy poetry has to offer. All the pieces gave pleasure, even when they were sad (for instance the ones dealing with the writer's late husband's dementia and death). Hadas writes with the most admirable clarity and levelheadedness, lack of vanity (never a bit of gratutious confessionalism or name-dropping, never the sense of a grudge) and lightly-wielded erudition, as well as a fine poet's feel for sound and rhythm. I felt like I had a wonderful teacher and a fine companion in my head the whole time I read these pieces

Rachel Hadas commemorates her poet friend Rachel Wetzsteon in a witty, elegant essay. Hadas writes about a woman’s seeming invisibility at a fruit market on Broadway, about the possibilities that await us in attics, about the annual Dante reading on Maundy Thursday. Most evocative for me was the essay about the validation of grief in a poem: “the lost father submerged among the living.” I recommend this collection of essays enthusiastically for the compassion, elegance and human connections expressed within.
