Civil war reenactors have set up camp on the grounds of Marshfield Manor. The group is very believable, especially when the unrest spills out of the barracks and inside the sumptuous mansion. Grace Wheaton, the curator and manager of the manor, manages to settle a minor squabble, but loses the war when actor Zachary Kincade is found stabbed to death. Jack Embers, the groundskeeper, falls under suspicion when he's linked to the death of Zachary's brother years ago. But there were others out for Zachary, actors who can be very convincing when the coveted role of "general" is on the line. Grace feels responsible for finding the murderer. Can she come to the rescue of her friends without putting herself in danger's way?

By Nikki Grace Interrupted, the second in Julie Hyzy's Manor House Mystery series, returns the reader to stately Marshfield Manor and its intriguing cast of characters. The estate is currently playing host to a group of Civil War re-enactors. When one of the participants, notorious womanizer Zachary Kincade, is murdered, manor curator and director Grace Wheaton decides to conduct her own investigation into his death. Unfortunately, Grace's search for Zachary's killer interferes with her budding romance with landscape architect Jack Embers, a suspect in Zachary's murder.Any cozy mystery reader will be delighted with this newest entry in the series. Hyzy makes Marshfield Manor come alive with her description of the grand mansion and its picturesque grounds. And the characters she's created are just as captivating: newly hired Grace is charming and independent; Bennett Marshfield, owner of the manor, is a kind but lonely man; and Grace's assistant Frances is both irritating and indispensible. I was given an advance copy of this book to read and review, and it is my pleasure to say that I truly enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it to any mystery reader.

It's the second in a series, but you can follow this one without having read the first novel, and this novel doesn't spoil the mystery in the first one (though it does spoil other events). There were actually two murders to solve: one that's thirteen years old and one that just happened. I was able to correctly guess "whodunit" for both mysteries before the "reveal," but whodunit wasn't obvious. (Many people hated the murdered men, and it seemed like they all had alibis!)The characters were varied, complex, and likable. They dealt with realistic issues alongside the mystery (like how living under the suspicion of murder for years had messed up a family). The details about the job, Civil War re-enacting, and the Manor and small town setting were skilfully woven into the story and brought it alive in my imagination. There were no sex scenes. There was a minor amount of "he cussed" style bad language. Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written, enjoyable mystery.I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. engaging complex amateur sleuth By A Customer Part manor house and part museum, Marshfield Manor is a tourist attraction that brings in millions of dollars to the town. Grace Wheaton is in charge of the building and frequently is called to defuse fights between guests. One of the guests Zachery sets his eyes on David Embers and attacks him thinking he is his brother Jack who he believes killed his baby brother for stalking a Kincaide sister. When the brawl ends, each walks away hurt but breathing. Jack, who has tried to date Grace, tells her the entire story; she believes he is innocent. Her belief is shattered when Zachery is found murdered in a field near where Civil War re-enactors have set up camp. The police look at Jack as the prime suspect just like they did years ago when Zachery's brother was murdered. Considering what she knows about Jack, she decides he did not kill either Kincaide. As such she decides to investigate the two related homicides, but what she concludes is so horrific she cannot believe her assertion; even the police have trouble dealing with Grace's belief when she explains it to them. Tthe killer remains free to harm more people. The second Manor of Murder Mystery (see Grace Under Pressure) is a family drama as much as a murder mystery; as the two deaths link two bitter clans. Readers will agree with the heroine that selecting the culprit is difficult because both families consist of damaged people never fully moving passed thirteen years ago only to feel an eerie déjà vu. After a brief doubt, Grace knows in her soul that Jack is innocent of both horrible crimes, but proving it by finding the culprit seems just out of reach. Julie Hyzy provides an engaging complex amateur sleuth enhanced by a strong cast of suspects.Harriet Klausner
