63 Innovation Nuggets (for aspiring innovators) are derived from the real life, practical experiences of George E. L. Barbee's corporate world experience 45 years, across 40 countries. He has had successful entrepreneurial experiences (founded 3 companies) and has lead innovation with Fortune 100 companies like Gillette, General Electric, PepsiCo, IBM, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Barbee broadens the concept of innovation from the historically narrow view around new products emanating just from R&D. Instead, today's innovation emanates from a diverse array of individuals across a wide range of functional areas including finance, technology, manufacturing, marketing, engineering, and sales. His innovative global leadership is wide ranging across consumer products, entrepreneurial financial services, and global professional services. Barbee's experience convinces him that most of us have an innovative spark that can be ignited. Being innovative is personally rewarding and can add great value to any organization. Innovation is all around us, and using these nuggets can help improve observation skills, transfer skills, and many others. The analogy to panning for gold nuggets is intriguing. Pioneering prospectors would sort through and collect individual pieces. At first each individual nugget may appear to have minimal value, but the total collection takes on the greatest wealth.

63 Innovation Nuggets for aspiring innovators, by George E. L. Barbee

Review This book has many innovation nuggets that resonate with me over and over. Innovation must be at the core of any institution that wants to grow. This book should be required reading for any organization where that is the objective! Innovation can indeed be taught and that journey will be enhanced by not only absorbing these insights and practical experiences but also enjoying them in the fashion they are written. --Tom Knowlton, former President of Kellogg North America and Executive Vice President of the Kellogg Company; former Dean of the Faculty of Business and Dean Emeritus, Ryerson University, Toronto.Barbee meaningfully broadens the understanding of innovation so it is within our grasp. There are very practical, relevant and real nuggets of advice in this book. What the reader will realize is that this is how Barbee practiced his profession in business. I know because I worked with him at PriceWaterhouseCoopers(PwC). I am still learning from his practice of always putting his clients at the center of every project. In my opinion, these nuggets are as useful for Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller start up companies. --Thomas O Neill, former Chairman of PriceWaterhouseCoopers(PwC) Consulting and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of all PwC Global Services; senior Director on Boards of several Fortune 500 public and smaller companies; industry expertise financial services

By Chrissine Rios What an invigorating read, surprising too, as I'm an educator in higher education--I had expected the innovation nuggets to only apply to business executives or MBA students, but no. The experience and wisdom contained in each nugget could help anyone within any organization be better and do more.I most enjoyed reading about the differences between customers and clients and how to put the client in the middle--and what that looks like. In education, we also take a student-centeredness approach, but Barbee's explanations and examples gave me a new perspective on what that means and how it not only benefits the student but also helps an organization grow--and me grow within it!From risk taking to relationship building, these nuggets have inspired me to be more innovative. I imagine Barbee's also an excellent grad school professor. I appreciated his candid anecdotes and pithy writing style. I felt like I knew him and like he was talking to me, even though he was talking about working with the heads of Fortune 100 companies! I recommend this book highly for all who want to make a bigger impact at work or at least better understand how what they do matters.

By RubyCharm Received "63 Innovation Nuggets" in the mail a few days ago and have found myself connecting with so many of the concepts Barbee presents. The information is inspiring and compels me to think about innovation in different, more meaningful ways. The book allows me to (compels me, really) to slow down and think about the ways I can be more innovative in different areas of my own small business. Even if one if familiar with the concepts in this book, there are compelling sparks and connections that lead to those wonderful "ahh-ha!" moments. I plan to share this book with others, though it has a coveted spot on my bookshelf at my desk. I've already scribbled ideas on a few pages and will go back again.

Johnson This book is great - easy to read cover-to-cover, but maybe just as good (or better) to read nugget-by-nugget, as each of 63 tidbits is thought-provoking in it's own way and invites the reader to reflect on their own experiences and challenges, if they allow the time. This book challenges the generally perceived definition of "innovation" - extending it beyond just the making of new products and into the realm of changing the way we view problems/issues/challenges and how we THINK, not just do. A great book for serial entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs and especially for those who don't think that they have an innovative bone in their body!
