About the Author Maupassant wurde als Sohn einer lothringischen Adelsfamilie am 05.08.1850 auf Schloß Miromesnil bei Dieppe geboren. Er studierte einige Zeit Jura in Paris, nahm am deutsch-französischen Krieg von 1870-1871 teil und war ab 1871 Beamter in Pariser Ministerien.Flaubertleitete seine literarischen Versuche. Seit 1891 lebte Maupassant in geistiger Umnachtung und starb am 07.07.1893 in Paris.

Typical Maupassant, a classic By Marie Antoinette I read this one several times in the past but had to reread it because it was not on my shelf at home. It is a great story and shows true to life human charcters, some very unlikeable and others with unexpected qualities. A very good story.

By Amazon Customer The central part of the story (almost one half) is missing, and this part is essential to understand the final message.In it, Maupassant makes a scathing satire of the French petite bourgeoisie and its lack of values.In sum, the most important part of the little book has been eliminated.Someone who wants to improve his/her french and does not know, might be interested in this free booklet.

But shipping made it not worth it - considering it's pretty much just a bound photo copy. There aren't ANY translations or footnotes or explinations in English. Which I did not expect. But it made for very difficult following along in my 2000 level French class.If you're new to French, I recommend going with other versions.
