Stories about children are not always for children. In The Watercress Girl, H. E. Bates masterfully depicts a childhood which, by proxy, reveals the mystifying world of the adult. Through a series of short, lyrical stories, the complexities of the world are seen with crystalline purity through the eyes of children. We experience the joyous and painful clarity of youth, full of fears, hopes and make-believe, and the trust and mistrust of the adult world.A little boy, charmed by the golden-throated Miss Mortenson, witnesses her fall from grace in 'The Pemberton Thrush'. Three children become entangled in a forbidden love when they witness a man attempting suicide in 'A Great Day for Bonzo', and a father reveals more of his past than he intends to in 'The Far Distant Journey'. First published in 1959, The Watercress Girl is a rich collection of stories, exploring a world full of wonder but also of unease; an unease of not yet understanding the world or being fully part of it.

About the Author

H. E. Bates was born in 1905 in the shoe-making town of Rushden, Northamptonshire, and educated at Kettering Grammar School. After leaving school, he worked as a reporter and as a clerk in a leather warehouse.

Many of his stories depict life in the rural Midlands, particularly his native Northamptonshire, where he spent many hours wandering the countryside. His first novel, The Two Sisters (1926) was published by Jonathan Cape when he was just twenty. Many critically acclaimed novels and collections of short stories followed.

During WWII he was commissioned into the RAF solely to write short stories, which were published under the pseudonym “Flying Officer X”. His first financial success was Fair Stood the Wind for France (1944), followed by two novels about Burma, The Purple Plain (1947) and The Jacaranda Tree (1949) and one set in India, The Scarlet Sword (1950).

Other well-known novels include Love for Lydia (1952) and The Feast of July (1954). His most popular creation was the Larkin family which featured in five novels beginning with The Darling Buds of May in 1958. The later television adaptation was a huge success.

Many other stories were adapted for the screen, the most renowned being The Purple Plain (1947) starring Gregory Peck, and The Triple Echo (1970) with Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed.

H. E. Bates married in 1931, had four children and lived most of his life in a converted granary near Charing in Kent. He was awarded the CBE in 1973, shortly before his death in 1974.

Told in a very child like tone, the stories may not appeal to all By Mystica Varathapalan The stories depict activities and the mind set of children in different environments but they are not stories for children. Make believe, fantasy and the play of children show how adults believe in circumstances which are different.Told in a very child like tone, the stories may not appeal to all. Sometimes a bit harsh and brutal they are telling of the times the stories were set.

Best Ebook PDF Talking To The Dead, by Rachel Hadas

This beautiful prose collection strikes very deep notes Rachel Hadas, known for her formal dexterity and intelligence, demonstrates here a remarkable fluency in moving from the disarmingly personal to the perceptively literary-critical, from the daily round to the ancient world, and from heartbreak to wonderment. Poetry is alive in her, as is a calm, humane attentiveness to the normalcy of grief and the possibilities of consolation. Phillip Lopate

As I read Talking to the Dead, I felt I was engaged in a wide-ranging, personal, pleasurable, and erudite conversation with Rachel Hadas herself. She is deft, as few others are, at integrating her deep scholarship with a compassionate understanding of the human and the humorous everyday, and as she turns her sharp eye, clear intelligence, and ready wit on subjects as various as Dante and dreams, Homer and Plath, snakes and centaurs, illness and invisibility, she never fails to surprise, stimulate, and satisfy both heart and mind. Lydia Davis

A journey with a wise and wonderful teacher/companion By Natania Rosenfed This book made me feel that to read is to be fully alive, and reminded me how much consolation and sheer energy poetry has to offer. All the pieces gave pleasure, even when they were sad (for instance the ones dealing with the writer's late husband's dementia and death). Hadas writes with the most admirable clarity and levelheadedness, lack of vanity (never a bit of gratutious confessionalism or name-dropping, never the sense of a grudge) and lightly-wielded erudition, as well as a fine poet's feel for sound and rhythm. I felt like I had a wonderful teacher and a fine companion in my head the whole time I read these pieces

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Evocative, Insightful Essays By E G D Talking to the Dead is a wonderful collection of essays. Each piece moved me in its specific details. Rachel Hadas commemorates her poet friend Rachel Wetzsteon in a witty, elegant essay. Hadas writes about a woman’s seeming invisibility at a fruit market on Broadway, about the possibilities that await us in attics, about the annual Dante reading on Maundy Thursday. Most evocative for me was the essay about the validation of grief in a poem: “the lost father submerged among the living.” I recommend this collection of essays enthusiastically for the compassion, elegance and human connections expressed within.

Barry Hannah's death on March 1 brought writers and fans out of the woodwork to mourn an irrevocable loss to American letters. Now, combining the best of the four story collections he published during his lifetime - Airships, Captain Maximus, Bats Out of Hell, and High Lonesome - and drawing from his final, never-before-seen manuscript, Long, Last, Happy will cement his legacy and serve as the definitive collection of his finest work in the story form.

From his first collection, Airships, Barry Hannah made the literary world sit up and take notice. His ferocious, glittering prose and sui generis worldview introduced listeners to a literary New South - a fictional landscape that Vanity Fair Daily has summarized as covering "women, God, lust, race, nature, gay Confederates, good old boys, bad old boys, guns, animals, fishing, fighting, cars, pestilence, surrealism, gritty realism, the future, and the past...tossed together in glorious juxtapositions". Long, Last, Happy confirms Barry as one of our most brilliant voices.

Unlike, say, readers of Samuel Beckett or Ben Marcus, with their reputations for difficulty, readers who buy without sampling Hannah are often in for a shock. He's always had trouble finding his audience because he's such a singularity: Southern, yes, but not easy like Flannery O'Connor or stylistically elegant like stream-of-consciousness Faulkner, he's a creative, twisty wordsmith while being down home and earthy, alien to most Lofty Northeastern postgraduate tastes, possessing an essentially comic vision when timeless literature supposedly calls for solemnity.Years ago I was hooked by "Airships." Philip Roth's blurb convinced me to buy the book, and the many notable tributes that followed suggest that Hannah is a writer's writer: the more you value originality and inventiveness, the more you'll be impressed. I read everything he published thereafter. So I bought this compilation only for the three stories previously unpublished. They were worth it: late Hannah was the best ever. Some writers were obviously influenced by him but he was, and always will be, sui generis. He can slow your reading speed, but every sentence is remarkable, and there is no filler at all. My favorites are here, "High Water Railers" and "Get Some Young," to name two. I would recommend "Long, Last, Happy" to readers who want a great introduction to this richly American original.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Master In His Nearly Full and Sadly Final Glory By louienapoli Hannah was one of God's greatest gifts to language. Hannah twisted and turned it made it astonish, made it hilarious and grotesquely real. No, he's not often easy reading. He might even be, probably is, an acquired taste. He didn't write page turners. He is too astonishing, page by page, too hilarious, to tell a straight narrative. He was the very best at what he did and I wish he were describing it because words fail me. The only way to know him is to read him, and there's no one more worth reading. He was the great magician of the sentence.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting By Syd Barry is always great- sadly deceased-his characters are strange but relatable and always win me over in the end- what is it about the underdogs, the forgotten, the lovely that are so endearing to a soul? Because they are all of us. Here's one for the underdogs!

Charming, Delightful and Clever Collection By Judith Ann Lovell If you are looking for a quirky collection of short stories with an elevated sense of the absurd you will enjoy Gary Carr's 'The Girl who Founded Nebraska and other Stories'. The writing is wonderful and fun with great characters and dialogue. In the midst of humor you will find little surprises of tenderness, wisdom and some tantalizing suspense too (The Visitors). You'll sit down to just read just one story and before you know it you've turned the last page of the book!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's quirky and funny and twisted By G. Carr I wrote it. But since you asked me to review it, I'll be honest. These short stories are not for everyone. There's a lot of satire, and I'm told that satire doesn't sell. It's quirky and funny and twisted. The title story is a broad, sweeping epic novel in 10 pages. The perfect length for the busy reader who can only spare 9-10 minutes until returning to Facebook.Much as I hate myself for it, there's even a fart joke - but it's in French. If you're curious about how they get the bubbles in champagne, this is the book for you. I think you'll like the book. If not, please send me some well-crafted hate mail.

Myths debunked - Financial Advice - How-To By Tarun This book is an excellent resource for those learning about credit scores and how to best repair them. It lists the various myths that are out there and clarifies information in plain old english. There are a multitude of ways to learn about your FICO score and how to repair it...but what I am finding is that most information on the internet is related to personal opinions rather than the right way to do things. This book explains, in detail, the FICO score and the methodologies used to get the number. It highlights many scenarios in which your score may have been positively or negatively impacted and how to deal with the same. It offers tips and advice and debunks the myths about credit and credit ratings. There are sections that discuss mortgages, insurance, and credit repair methodologies.Basically, not only will this book help you with credit scores, it is a small primer on how you should manage and control your finances. There are excellent tips that relate to debit card usage, insurance deductibles, and setting up an emergency fund --- to name a few.Excellent book, well laid out, easy to understand for everyone....

The first part of the book explains how credit scores are calculated which is useful in understanding how one got into a particular mess to begin with. The second part provides guidance regarding rehabilitating one's score. I found the book to be quite helpful. Its actually not that easy to find a comprehensive source of information regarding this important topic and this book does an admirable job of explaining the ins and outs. Its well written and clear. Not the most entertaining topic, but nonetheless, presented nicely.
