Dr. Laurie Boulden is a student of history, and her writing clearly shows this. I found myself checking Scriptures, and time and time again, I relearned what I thought I knew about the early days of Noah. The story is imaginative and eye opening. It's Biblical historical fiction at its best. Laurie has not taken license with Scripture. She has creatively given us a look at how things might have occurred leading up to the flood. You will enjoy meeting Merial and watching her fall in love with Shem.

By Litermaniac I tried so hard to get into this novel but I found it meandering and difficult to enjoy. By the end of the story I found myself skim reading. The protagonist's personality seemed a bit unsubstantial and the overall pacing and rhythms seems choppy. Also I feel that the background and the culture, are generally un-explained and we are left to make some guesses. "Breaking trees" comes to mind. We are left to guess that Noah's son's are the first to deliberately harvest wood. Many other firsts and similar suppositions are scattered about, while we are talking early human history, I feel like a better picture of Merials original circumstances "a day in the life" could have made her wonder feel more relatible. You can tell the author has a clear picture in her head, but the canvas is semi-complete to the rest of us. This is to the best of my knowledge is a first attempt novel and I do believe the author has some potential.
