Historically, an investigation into the impact of science and technology on society is nothing new to the area of literature; in fact it has been done for centuries. However, this book is relevant in its attempt to understand, in Vonnegut’s novels, how Darwin’s theory of evolution functions as a cosmogonic myth that is widely accepted in order to explain why the world is as it is and why things happen as they do, to provide a rationale for social customs and observances, and to establish the sanctions for the rules by which Vonnegut’s characters conduct their lives. Moreover, this book deals with how and why Kurt Vonnegut’s fiction represents the changing human image resulting from Darwinism. By Darwinism, I mean Darwin’s theory of evolution, applied to a social context and therefore applicable to human beings. My theoretical approach will be based primarily on ideas from myth criticism and complemented by treatises on evolution.

About the Author Gilbert McInnis has earned his Ph.D in English Literature at Université Laval. He recently published a monograph, Evolutionary Mythology in the Writings of Kurt Vonnegut (2011). He is the founder of InExile Publications, which has re-published Paul Goodman's Moral Ambiguity of America, a debut work by the American poet Erik Wackernagel's She Bang Slam and Sir Leonard Woolley's Ur of Chaldees. He taught English literature at Université Laval, Université Chicoutimi and Bishop's University in Québec, at Grenfell College in Newfoundland, and at Acadia University in Nova Scotia.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Shocking Misunderstanding of Science By A. C. Parrish The argument in this book is based on a shocking misunderstanding of science. The author does not understand the distinction between modern evolutionary biology (what he invariably calls "Darwinism," because he wants to present it as a religious sect of some sort) and the social Darwinism of the past that led to harmful social policies, eugenics movements, and selfish behavior in general. There is a difference between what is and what ought to be, and Charles Darwin would have been among the first to admit this. Darwin's theory of evolution by means of natural selection describes what is; it does not prescribe what ought to be. It is an amoral idea, charged with moral issues only because of its misreading -- a misreading that is often willfully done for religious/ideological reasons.How the author is unaware of this distinction is beyond me. If you propose to be an expert on science in literature, then you should not make ridiculous assertions, like "there is NO distinction" to be made between evolution and social Darwinism (pg. 11, emphasis his).The book seems to be argued from a thinly veiled creationist stance, with a desire to discredit evolution through faulty argumentation about the "evolutionary myth," whose "god" is chance (pg. 4). While chance is important to the variation of species, it is neither a god nor even an intelligent agent. This, too, McInnis does not seem to grasp.There are further arguments that I take issue with in the book, but I think I've made my point sufficiently well for an Amazon review. The book reads like a conspiracy theorist's attempt to take evolution down a peg, but ultimately fails due to (willful?) ignorance of some very basic distinctions that a first-year biology course could have cleared up.

That's how we got giraffes." - Kurt Vonnegut By Steve Gronert Ellerhoff Gilbert McInnis's contribution to Vonnegutian scholarship comes at the perfect time, as the Kurt Vonnegut Society enters its third year and criticism on the writer's literature grows in the wake of his death. The plurality of voices writing on Vonnegut continues to grow, a sort of merry cacophony of papers and essays, and standing out in the midst of it sounds Evolutionary Mythology in the Writings of Kurt Vonnegut: Darwin, Vonnegut and the Construction of an American Culture. McInnis asserts that while others have acknowledged a mythic line running through Vonnegut's work, the basis for it has not yet been explored. His convincing argument is that the myth Vonnegut wrestled with was the cultural and scientific hold of Darwin's theory of evolution.The contention should not be surprising to anyone who knows Vonnegut's work. The man made some ripples in his final years when he broached the subject of intelligent design as a reasonable stance during appearances on The Daily Show and NPR Morning Edition. A perpetual skeptic except when it came to the necessity of kindness, Vonnegut kept returning to his dissatisfaction with the idea of natural selection. Critic Loree Rackstraw tells us his friendship with the late great paleontologist and evolutionary theorist Stephen Jay Gould revolved around their debating the topic. Vonnegut's sympathy for intelligent design and skepticism of Darwinian theory has made a lot of academics uncomfortable but the issue needs to be explored because it keeps recurring in Vonnegut's novels, essays, and drawings.Luckily, someone has finally taken on this complex issue and we all, the Vonnegutians and anyone else delving into criticism on Kurt Vonnegut, need to thank him. McInnis's book is quite the statement and deserves its place on the shelf with the substantial Vonnegut critics. Beyond our own karass, there are echoes of Northrop Frye here, too, and one wonders how the framework he has set out here might apply to other 20th century writers. The work is sound, well-researched, and, most important of all, revelatory. Evolutionary Mythology in the Writings of Kurt Vonnegut is one of those rare publications in literary criticism that stands apart from the rest while tying so much together. I highly recommend this book for professors, postgrads, and university library collections.
