Do you wish you had a better answer for those who ask why Christians seem so "intolerant" toward our gay neighbors? Are you unsure how to witness to and pray for a gay coworker or friend? Or maybe you've found yourself wondering if we can really be sure what our Father actually thinks about all this. Is God's word to our homosexual neighbors clear? Or have social conservatives stretched things beyond what the Bible actually says?

If you're looking for clear, practical biblical guidance for thinking and talking about homosexuality and same-sex marriage as a Christian, then The Truth with Love is for you. Written by David Vogel, the host of the Answers for Ambassadors podcast, this short book is packed with Bible references and written in an accessible, conversational format to equip you to give an answer to those who ask. "An excellent introduction to this crucial issue." -- Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief for World

The Truth with Love begins with a look at the Bible's consistent message, from Genesis to Revelation, about sex, marriage, and homosexuality. Chapter 3 tackles the tough question of why a loving God would forbid same-sex sexual intimacy, giving a thoughtful answer for Christians and non-Christians alike who struggle with this question. Chapter 4 considers what Bible-believing Christians should say to homosexual friends and neighbors, depending on whether they are professing believers and whether they are repentant. Finally, Chapter 5 takes a look at the thorny legal questions of same-sex marriage and nondiscrimination laws and what a Christian citizen can and should do.

In the midst of the culture’s redefinition of marriage, many Christians struggle with how best to engage the subject of same sex marriage. As Vogel mentions, it’s too easy to panic in the face of all of the changes that are happening around us and when we panic, “we do and say stupid things.” Vogel writes that this is a subject that needs to be engaged by followers of Christ, it cannot be ignored.Vogel takes time to walk through the various laws in the Bible. He writes of the distinction between the laws laid out in the Old Testament, civil laws, ceremonial laws, and moral laws. He explains the difference between them and talks about which ones are applicable today, based on this definition. He moves to the New Testament and discusses the typical passages that are mentioned on both sides of the arguments for and against same sex marriage. With some amount of sarcasm, he writes that it would seem that if these unions were supported by God that he, “forgot to offer a single affirmation, legitimation, or model for homosexual relationships anywhere in Scripture.”Vogel understands the need for relationships when entering into dialogue regarding same sex marriage. He understands that the conversation will depend on the relationship we have with the people with whom we speak. He goes on to give some recommendations as to what Christians should do in engaging the subject. In a gracious way, Vogel reminds the reader that their job isn’t to convict anyone of sin but to lead them to Christ in order that they might enter into a life-changing relationship with him.David Vogel does a good job squeezing a lot of information into this small book. There were moments when I felt uncomfortable with his approach and realized for whom he had written this book. This is not a book that you would hand out to random people to try to convince them that the Bible’s stance on marriage is correct. His target is Christians who are struggling to make sense of it all in the midst of a culture that holds a contrary worldview. While there was nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering here, Vogel does a good job of condensing everything into a concise resource for any Christian struggling to know how to engage and where to start the conversation with the people that they love the most.(This review is based upon a copy of this book which was provided free of charge from the author. These opinions are my own; I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated for this review.)

Not that he fails, nor that his book is ill-titled, but rather that the diversity of perspectives surrounding this topic, with their associated emotions, guarantees controversy. However, his clear thinking and solid foundations provide a reasonable framework for approaching homosexuality and gay marriage.Written explicitly for those who consider themselves Christians, David references the Bible extensively, placing the intentions of the heart at the center of his logical constructs. Although by word-count it can be read fairly quickly, if you’ve never examined why you think the way that you do regarding homosexuality, many pause-to-ponders will be in order.Overall, this is a very good contribution that places the core of who we are to be as Christians in the center of this raging debate. David attempts to tackle the entirety of the issue, and may not connect the dots enough for some readers. While it is obvious that he could have doubled or tripled its length, the strength of his position has not been diminished. As uncomfortable as the topic may be, we can’t walk away from it. This book is an encouragement to do what Christians are called to do.

By Amanda As a mom, I so appreciate books like this one: rich with content presented succinctly and conversationally to keep my teenagers' attention and permeated with a humble Christian tone that I would like to see my kids emulate in all their communication. That said, while I read it with my kids in mind thinking I knew plenty about this issue, I benefited as well from the systematic and biblical clarity with which Mr. Vogel approaches his topic. He is careful to differentiate between biblical teaching and necessary extrapolation from such, and he doesn't shy away from the hard questions. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review, but the nature of that review was left completely up to me. I highly recommend "The Truth with Love" to all who engage today's culture.
