The following are two examples:Having never had a mirror, Annie had no image in her mind of her own face. She came to know herself by reflections in her child’s eyes.Sometimes Amanda burned paper over a candle, watching the eerie ash fall. It took three years, remembering, before she saw God catching it.

But the "twitter tale" style of story telling is, in my opinion, complex and sophisticated. It is very much akin to writing a sonnet. Ms. Ference has my thanks for making this collection available. As for the collection itself, some speak to me more than others for sure, some have a better rhythm than others. But over all I would highly recommend this work. Thank you.

Flash Fiction at its Best By Shara500 In Ference’s Between Blinks, each story—flash fiction at its most economical—captures something of the human heart, mind, and soul. Like this first line of one of the tales: “Leila doesn't trust his daffodils.” This is quintessentially Ference, using a simple trope of flowers offered as a love token and blasting it off its sentimental rocker in the first line. OK, I think to myself, why doesn’t Leila trust them? Even in this short form, Ference provides a thread of suspense that makes you want to keep reading. Each tale holds within it a zen koan of sorts, using deceptively simple language to portray a complex portrait of the human dilemma in all its messy ambiguity. Her characters are at times lonely or betrayed or surprised by acts of kindness. In the arc of this collection of tales, the overwhelming message is one of love as redemption. I highly recommend this book.
