By Cbatten Edgar clearly articulates the impact of human behavior on an organization. While the book speaks to the role of the leader it is applicable to any person wanting to participate in a culture evolution. The hardest truth is that it starts with our own awareness and capacity to understand the impact of our own behavior in the workplace. Edgar takes us through a wonderful exploration of the power and importance of consciousness in the change or transformation setting. My advice is read Part 2 then Part 3 which are more HOW and conclude with the slightly more WHY orientation of Part 1.

With this starting premise, Edgar Papke follows his seminal first book, True Alignment: Linking Company Culture with Customer Needs for Extraordinary Results, by drilling deep into the bedrock issues and solutions to the greatest leadership challenge of this and any time. "The lack of constructive conflict management..." Papke contends "undermines [the] ability to lead effectively." And with his vast executive coaching and organizational knowledge and experience, Papke offers authentic case studies and tested tools to identify, manage, and resolve disagreement in any form, at any level, and for a positive outcome. As with all of his work, we are reminded that "it's all about relationships." How and why great leaders embrace conflict as an opportunity rather than view it as a peril By Robert Morris In a previously published book, True Alignment: Linking Company Culture with Customer Needs for Extraordinary Results, Edgar Papke offers a measurable and observable approach to achieving and then sustaining alignment of customer needs with an organization's leadership, culture, and brand intention. This is indeed a major challenge to business leaders.Papke agrees: "To confront this challenge, leaders need a systemic framework for understanding, assessing, and creating alignment. They and their teams and organizations require an approach that cuts through the complexity and eliminates the noise from multiple priorities, numerous initiatives, and the confusion of choices and options; an approach that provides a clear and simple roadmap to success." I agree with all that except the word "simple." If the process really were simple, there would be no need for this book, or for any of the other 3,623 books on business alignment that Amazon now offers for sale.Contrary to what some people may think, conflict is not necessarily undesirable. Throughout history, great leaders have created situations in which conflict in the form of principled dissent is needed to find the right solution to an especially serious problem, to find the right answer to an especially important question. Ever wanted to imagine what it would be like at Ebbets Field watching Mickey Mantle? A few parts of the book reminded me of Field of Dreams. If you build it they will come. As a lover of baseball, the main character Greg Waltman resonated with me a great deal and his journey was wonderfully envisioned with a great twist. The dialogue was nicely put together and even though it is such a difficult theme there are many uplifting moments in it. Definitely a must read, I am glad I found this one.

In the Old Testament, Shavuot occurred on the fiftieth day after Passover and celebrated the firstfruits of the harvest. When Jews translated Scripture into Greek, they chose the word Pentecost (“fiftieth”) to translate Shavuot (“weeks”), for obvious reasons.In the New Testament, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit recorded in Acts 2 occurred on the first Pentecost after Jesus’ death (which coincided with Passover), resurrection, and ascension into Heaven. Since that day, the Holy Spirit has continued to fall on Christians in accordance with Jesus’ promise and for the purpose He announced: “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8, emphasis added). A Spirit-empowered life is, at minimum, power for witness to Jesus Christ.The Christian life, then, is a Spirit-empowered life. And yet, so many of us experience a gap between the kind of life we actually live and the Spirit-empowered life the New Testament portrays. In A Spirit-Empowered Life, Mike Clarensau sets out to describe the Spirit-empowered life in detail and to explain how that gap can be closed.Mike is a friend and former colleague—hence I will use the familiar Mike instead of the more formal Clarensau in this review. He’s also the genuine article: a humble Christian who lives what he writes. A Spirit-Empowered Life consists of forty 5-page chapters. Each chapter ends with questions for personal reflection. The book makes for a perfect post-Pentecost devotional. (A companion small-group curriculum is available from MyHealthyChurch[dot]com.Mike divides his material into four sections: The Hunger (chapters 1–8), The Encounter (chapters 9–16), The Demonstration (chapters 17–36), and The Horizon (chapters 37–40). The longest section of the book concerns the demonstration of Spirit-empowered living through relationships, spiritual growth, service to others, missional undertaking, and worship of God. The portrait of Spirit-empowered living that emerges is thus a combination of classical Pentecostalism’s emphasis on “power for witness” with a more contemporary emphasis on purpose-driven ministry. It’s a good, and natural fit.I close with an extended quotation from Mike’s book because it identifies where the problem lies. If we ask, what is the cause of the gap between the kind of life we lead and the kind of life Jesus promised us, the answer cannot be: Jesus. Or the Holy Spirit. The Trinity unites in its desire that we “may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). If there is any gap, then, it causes from our lack of desire. And so, Mike writes:“No matter what the road you traveled toward God looked like, it was your need that fueled the journey. But there’s a greater step beyond that critical precipice. If you’re going to find a life of more—the abundant one Jesus spoke of and the greater race God offered His prophet [Jeremiah 12:5], you have to really want it.”May God use this book to elicit a greater hunger for Him, the life Jesus offers, and the power the Spirit gives!P.S. Caitlynn Reeves has done it again. Surprising story line, exciting elements, and ever so gripping, she has managed to throw me through a loop with a character that brings things to the table. It makes me wanna meet Bobby Jay and find out what he felt.

The times they are a changing especially for middle aged reporters in a dying industry in a rural mining town where unemployment is high. A once promising reporter from a small blue collar town in Pennsylvania, Buck has morphed into an unhappy, single, and virtually broke existence. He may not be a hot shot investigative reporter and he hasn't yet fulfilled his dream of writing that one blockbuster novel, but he has a steady job and a pretty young reporter friend for companionship. But then life becomes complicated and Buck may have missed his last chance at happiness. This short story/novelette is rich with mood creating descriptions that permit the reader to experience the life of the main character Buck. It's a very good reflection of dreams lost in an economy transitioning to an internet world.
