Or is literature molded by artists attempting to show what a certain physical or mental disability feels like? And who among us is disabled? Probably everyone, in some way, although some disabilities are hidden while others make us stand out in a crowd. Those who are wheelchair bound are obviously disabled, but what about the aged stiffened by arthritis? Or the elderly whose memory has begun to slide? Or the "healthy" teenage athlete whose heart is a few beats away from disaster? When art and literature shine a light on disabilities and how they're portrayed, either pro or con, we all can learn something. This definitive book on how art and literature can affect, alter, or redirect our perception of disability should be required reading for those interested in the humanities, medicine and psychology. By the time you finish this book, you'll have no qualms about seeking out a disabled friend and sitting down for a serious discussion about how they view the world, and why. Prepare for an enlightening, eye-opening read.

By SD92101 I highly recommend this for anyone interested in American lit and/or disability studies. It explains that disability is a culturally created notion, and literature is a big part of any culture. It really enhanced my understanding of disability as a socially constructed phenomenon rather than a physical/mental impairment. The chapter on disability and sex was particularly enlightening.

By Yana Kalendareva "Disabled Literature" is a great resource that can give you valuable insights into the disability culture in America. The book exposes the hypocrisy and the fears that lie beneath our professed politically correct tolerance of disability. It discusses the slow movement from alienating people with disabilities both culturally and politically towards acknowledging the "normalcy" of disability, and examines many facets of the issue, including the implications of genetic and technological advancements on society's views and practices towards people with disabilities. Fascinating and informative.
