1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This has the Victorian ring to it By Hui Shen ben Israel FINGER RING LORE by Sir William Jones (1890) is an absolute must for any ring enthusiast. Jones covers not only the known history and findings regarding rings; he also covers much folklore and usage customs.Jones can explain all about the wedding ring as well as the pope's ring. The illustrations in this Victorian-era book are sumptuous. Naturally there are no photos. What's worse is Sir William doesn't really deliver as we might think he ought: he is short on actual ring history, but he goes on pages and pages about the betrothal ring given by Joseph to Mary. In other words, he's just long on lore and short on rings.One thing we must not hold against him in excess is his total lack of description of the rings and customs of his era. He says very little of his modern usages, styles and customs. While he has settled some basic arguments about the Claddagh ring, for example, there are older books from which Sir William essentially lifted the entire text.This book has the typical Victorian ring to it - either love it or hate it but I say read it at least once.My copy is an old clothbound, an excellent library piece and a fantastic in-depth source for anything ring-related. If you'd like a complete library, I suggest you also buy Rings for the finger: from the earliest known times to the present, with full descriptions of the origin, early making, materials, the archaeology, ... for wedding, commemorative, mourning, etc. by George Kunz, and Rings Through The Ages: An Informal History by James McCarthy.Sir William Jones gives us more myth than actual ring history, though he does well enough with the latter subject. Victorians could be a bit pigheaded, but then that is how we all react when there's little information to get. Also, Victorian hands were tied as to tone and content.Jones makes up for this with fantastic Victorian illustrations that show all and sundry types of rings. There is a dandy side-view of one of the pope's rings and it is a beautiful sight. However, as I said, Jones is light on the actual ring history, and he sadly doesn't come close to explaining or even mentioning the ring traditions of his own time.This is a Victorianist's dream book. What can be more romantic, more Gothic, more adept at serving 'night-table' reading purposes? It's great fun and quite hefty as Victorian studies go - so why not pick up a copy and learn a little about the rings you may just be wearing on your fingers at this moment.Sir William Jones was at his top game when he published this back in 1890. Though long on lore and short on finger-rings, it still covers the ground pretty well. One must always recall Victorian writers were locked into a difficult mindset; frankly, they also didn't know too much about anything.Jones' book is truly beautifully illustrated (since no photos were possible back then in a regular book). The histories which lean far too heavily on myth and legend are more than sufficient if you prefer this for your 'night-table' reading. It is enjoyable to me because Sir William without understanding it, I think, shows himself to be quite the ethnographer.
