The Worlds Of The Orb dives into alternate dimensions, some twisted and comically surreal as in the, There Was An Old Woman tales. Others are a journey into the realm of Twilight, Fairies and Witches, there is a bit of Urban Fantasy with Magical Realism in The Flash And The Thunder and Black Angel/Bark Angel, and a bit of Horror from The Hall Of Light. Through it all The Orb is present, in full view or skirting the edges of reality. Faith is tested in a young boy confronting an ancient evil right next door. There are present and ancient scores to settle. The stories are edited to the higher end of the Young Adult range but still hold a more adult edge. There is some profanity, sexual content and violence.

The Worlds Of The Orb, by W C Quick

About the Author Retired welder/metal fabricator, now a writer. I always said that I would be a writer in college, studying to be a biologist or an English professor. I chose a trade instead to stave off frostbite and starvation. Back again, to cold and hunger. I enjoyed the trade and most of the projects I had the opportunity to be a part of; aircraft components for Northrop, Boeing, Douglas and other aerospace companies. The last 16 years were self-employed, I had a shop in Camarillo, CA. In the early 1990's I started making a variety of products for vintage and modern motorcycles. I was a member of a vintage off road racing club, traveling around the country competing and selling my products.... ... Many of the ideas for stories came from watching the bright glow of the molten pool of metal formed by the arc of my TIG torch. The idea for the singularity in many of my stories, The Orb came from the ball of energy pushed along over miles and years of welding metal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the author kept me turning the pages trying to piece this great puzzle together By Amazon Customer This is a very interesting, fractured mix of stories. Some day I hope to sit down and pick this authors brain. I suspect the stories are just a hint at what his true thought process is. The 1st story reminded me of the old Dragnet show, but this story is futuristic. My only complaint is that some of the stories ended abruptly after I was really getting into them. Not only does the 'orb' frequent the stories but cats. So cat people will appreciate. One story in particular was a little to close to home for me and I wonder if WC Quick was writing from his memories. All in all, the author kept me turning the pages trying to piece this great puzzle together. If you like short quirky, fantasy, futuristic stories, you will enjoy this bunch! By Amazon Customer At least a few of the stories collected in ‘The Worlds of the Orb’ have been released in whole or in part before, but there are also a few stories that are, to this reader at least, new. I particularly liked Love’s Leap (in which the young protagonist puts just a bit too much into his newfound practice of leaping for exercise) and There was an Old Woman, which to me at least had a distinctly ‘Blade Runner’-esque feel to it, with figures such as werewolves and other fairy tale creatures in place of the sought after replicants. The star of the anthology, for me, was The Flash and the Thunder. In it, the focus is on a 7-year old boy by the name of Tommy, whose somewhat abusive older brother Roger just might have fallen in with ‘the wrong crowd’ of a wholly different order than usual. The time period in this anchor leg of the anthology is a bit elusive, but being a child of the late 60s/early 70s, I got a distinct flavor of that time period. Fans of ‘A Christmas Story’ will easily be able to envision this story taking place in a much darker corner of Ralphie’s world. As always, Mr. Quick’s powers of description shine, as does his ability to weave old world fairy tales into a more modern setting. Newly revealed though, is his skill at touching upon the innocence of the youthful mind (Tommy and Roger) as well as that of the more morally challenged adults in the stories. There is darkness and light in all of these stories, as well as humor and horror.Capping off the collection is The Hall of Light, which had the definite feel of an epilogue to The Flash and the Thunder. While a few rough edges remain, Mr. Quick’s storytelling skills have, for this reader at least, grown in leaps and bounds. I would not hesitate to recommend this anthology to anyone and am looking forward very much what he has in store for us next.
